IMovie 8 Quits When Trying To Record Lengthy Movie Via iSight

For a sleep study, I am trying to use my MBP's iSight camera to record a night of me sleeping.
Each time I try to record using iMovie, the program quits unexpectedly after a few hours. A file of what was recorded is left in a temp file as a .mov file but cannot be opened by QuickTime. The same thing happens when I try to use Photo Booth as my video capture app; PB quits unexpectedly and the resulting .mov file cannot be opened.
My MBP has a 320GB hard drive with 80+ gigs free, so I wouldn't think this would be a problem. Screen savers and energy saver features are turned off.
Is there just a simple duration limit for record video in iMovie or Photo Booth?
Does anyone have suggestions for a fix, or another app that would help me capture 6-8 hours of continuous video via my built-in iSight camera?
Thanks.

Hello MrMcG
Regardless of whether you are recording in standard or high definition, it seems to me that you will need more disk space for real time (as differentiated from Time Lapse) recording.
As explained in http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=iMovie/8.0/en/10331.html , 8 hours of video recording would require a minimum of (13b xb 8) = 104Gb free.
3. Choose the disk where you want to store the video from the Save To pop-up menu.
You can choose any supported hard disk that’s connected to your computer. It takes 13 gigabytes (GB) of space to store about one hour of video in standard (DV) format and 40 GB for video in high-definition format (HD), so make sure your disk has enough available storage space for the video you’re importing. The amount of free space on each available disk is shown in parentheses next to the disk’s name in the pop-up menu.
Moreover, OS X requires additional free space for its own operations. (I like to keep at least an additional 50Gb free for OS X headroom, but less may work for you.) Therefore, if you do not want to use Time Lapse photography, you will need to somehow find more disk space. Apple gives some alternatives in the "Making more disk space available" section of http://support.apple.com/kb/TA21009

How do I verify a purchase in itunes when trying to rent a movie via apple tv?

I have simply re-entered my credit card data after making the movie selection. It is a big nuisance to pull out the card and enter the numbers etc. including the 3 digit code. There must be a way to save the data for the Apple TV, but I have only had it for a few days and haven't figured it out.

  • Imovie application quits when trying to add audio

when trying to drag audio into imovie, application automatically quits. If anyone can help, it's greatly appreciated.

I'm running out of ideas but I assume the music plays in iTunes and your iTunes is the iLife5 rather than earlier. When you click on audio at the clips pane (or whatever it is called) I presume you can access the full iTunes library. If you cannot, you have an iLife problem. Then does the crash come from all your tunes.
Before all this you could run Mac Sweeper which you will find (free download) on http://mac.softpedia.com/get/System-Utilities/Mac-Sweeper.shtml

  • IMovie Unexpectedly quitting when trying to select a clip

I am suspecting that I may have a corrupted project. Then again, it could just be a major problem with my Mac. At one point during my import, iMovie unexpectedly quit. I was able to reopen the project and continue the import. Once the import was complete, I attempted to click on a clip, and boom! iMovie unexpectedly quit. I reopened, and was asked to move the clips to the clipboard and all went well. I even was able to save the project. Still any time I select any clip, iMovie unexpectedly quits. For reference, here is a portion of the dialog of the crash:

My standard list of things to do first for these weird sort of problems, but I also tend to run these before I go to burn an iDVD project just to be safe. Keep in mind this list represents the programs I tend to use. I am running Panther (10.3.9) so Tiger users might want to check the below list for compatibility. There are several alternate programs that do the same things with some combining the functions of some of the ones below. So everyone has their favorites, but here are mine...
Run MacJanitor (free download) to do all the Unix Cron Maintenance scripts.
Run Disk Utility (Applications -> Utilities) and repair disk permissions on your start up drive (typically your internal drive). Also verify any other drives mounted on the system, especially any external drives that you use for iMovie and iDVD projects.
Run Preferential Treatment (free download) to check for corrupt/damaged application and system preference files.
Run Cache Out X (free download) to clear all system and application caches.
Reboot your Mac (after running Cache Out X you are given the option to restart the machine).
If you still can not get it to run correctly, next thing to try is to throw out the iMovie preference file (don't forget to change back those preferences you want different from the defaults next time you run it). If it still doesn't work, then I would suggest you reinstall iMovie.

ave you repaired Permissions and Verified/Repaired DIsk?
    Repair Permissions:
This should be done after all software installs and updates.
    1. Navigate to Utilities/DiskUtility and launch Disk Utility.
    2. Choose your volume (usually the second icon)
    3. Choose "First Aid" tab
    4. Click on "Repair Permissions"
Also run "verify" disk. If the disk needs repair:
    Repair Disk:
    Steps for using Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Tiger Install disc or Install Disk 1 that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair.
If you repair errors run it until no errors found.

Sounds like you accidently de-selected "Software Monitoring"
    and/or
If you don't know what a function does... in this case, "Low Latency Mode" don't enable it. I suggest consulting the manual and read up on Low Latency Mode... it could even be causing the problem you describe depending on what plugins are being used.

  • Nasty feedback when trying to record using the internal mic

I get nasty feedback when trying to record using the internal mic on my macbook. I'm running Maverick. Why is this happening?

Note: there may be other issues involved, but without further details I can only suggest that using headphones is the best way to accurately hear what you're recording, adjust gain levels, and avoid feedback. So this should be the first thing to try as you troubleshoot.

  • Anyone else getting a timed out error message when trying to check for updates via the app store software on a desktop?

anyone else getting a timed out error message when trying to check for updates via the app store software on a desktop?

Hi, couple of things to try...

Post subject: NSURLErrorDomain error -1100 in OS X 10.8
If you check for software updates using the App Store in OS X 10.8 and get "NSURLErrorDomain error -1100" the problem may be with your Software Update preferences. This is particularly likely if you were using a custom Apple Software Update server. To solve the problem, quit the App Store, move the following two files (if present) to the trash, restart, and only then rerun App Store updates:
    /Library/Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate.plist
    /Library/Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate.plist.lockfile
    http://x704.net/bbs/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=6130
I was recently trying to upgrade to mountain lion through the app store.  I have unreliable Internet from a cable company whom I will not name, but we all know who they are.  My Internet dropped while downloading the upgrade.  Once I went through the notorious unplug the modem/router and plugged it back in to gain Internet connectivity again, I could not resume. No matter what I did, the app store kept displaying "an error occurred." I am hoping that those with the same issue read this first to save them hours of skimming through the Internet to find a solution.  Here are the steps to take:
    1. Make sure you have reestablished Internet connection
    2. Chances are you got frustrated when you tried to resume/unpause the download and clicked the "X" to the left.  If so, select the "Store" drop-down menu from the App Store and select "View My Account." There should be an option to unhide your purchase.  You know what to do.
    3. There is also an option to  reset all warnings for buying and downloading under "View My Account." Do this, click "Done," sign out of the App Store and quit the App Store.
    4. Open the Preferences in safari and select Privacy.  Select "Remove All Website Data."  Just do it.
    5. Launch the app store and sign in.
    6. Now, if you "Check for Unfinished Downloads" everything works peachy.
I hope this helps.  Not much I can do for your Internet connection though.
