IMovie 8 startup is very slow
I have imovie on a 2.8 Ghz imac with 2GB of RAM and it take 5 minutes to load. Any suggestion on speeding up start up time or is this a fact of life until Apple makes performance improvements?
Welcome to the Discussion forums.
I have an MBP which takes but a few seconds to start up im08, I use it for experimentation and tend to work on my MP which also starts up in a similar time. Whilst I don't have much content on my MBP I do on my MP so I have to assume your start up time indicates a problem. Do you have a large iphoto library by any chance.

my mac startup is very slow, it goes white for long before showing user account, how do i cure this illness?
1) System Preferences > Startup Disk ...
to set your correct Stratup Disk AND
2) Run one pass of Disk Utility "Repair Disk" from another source such as by booting to Recovery_HD OR
Restart in Safe Mode (which does the "Repair Disk" as it starts up). -
iMovie is very slow.
I have 87.9 GB free on my only hard drive and I do not use Time Machine.Do you have any other programs running whilst you edit iMovie? Sometimes iMovie for me is slow on my Macbook but then again I'm dealing with fairly large projects. Try clearing some space on your hard drive and close any other programs that are open. iMovie can be very hard on your computer's resources and make it run slow, particularly when you're importing video and editing large projects. It happens to me sometimes.

Macbook Pro startup is very slow
Hello everyone,
My macbook pro (august 2010) with Mountain Lion is starting up very slow (about 2 minutes or more) since a couple of weeks.
When started up, the applications take also about a minute or 3 to start up. So the time it takes to get my Macbook up and running is about 5 minutes, which is considerably more than when I first bought it. Okay, I get that with the Mountain Lion upgrade it'll start up slower than usual, but this can't be right.
A few screenshots:
On top of that: My finder says I have 150,45GB available. But my disc utility says I have 57,21GB available.. So something isn't right I guess...
I've ran Disc utility check and repair. No change. Only dropbox and growl is checked on at accounts > username.
Also, sometimes when emptying my trashcan, it get's stuck. I have to stop it (and this takes a long while too) and empty it again. Overall it takes a very long time to empty it. It doesn't have any big files in it, and secure empty isn't selected.
I'm baffeled.
Can anyone help me?This comment applies to malicious software ("malware") that's installed unwittingly by the victim of a network attack. It does not apply to software, such as keystroke loggers, that may be installed deliberately by an attacker who has hands-on access to the victim's computer. That threat is in a different category, and there's no easy way to defend against it. If you have reason to suspect that you're the target of such an attack, you need expert help.
All versions of OS X since 10.6.7 have been able to detect known Mac malware in downloaded files. The recognition database is automatically updated once a day; however, you shouldn't rely on it, because the attackers are always at least a day ahead of the defenders. In most cases, there’s no benefit from any other automated protection against malware. Starting with OS X 10.7.5, there is another layer of built-in malware protection, designated "Gatekeeper" by Apple. By default, applications that are downloaded from the network will only run if they're digitally signed by a developer with a certificate issued by Apple. Applications certified in this way haven't actually been tested by Apple (unless they come from the Mac App Store), but you can be sure that they haven't been modified by anyone other than the developer, and his identity is known, so he could be held responsible if he knowingly released malware. For most practical purposes, applications recognized by Gatekeeper as signed can be considered safe. Note, however, that there are some caveats concerning Gatekeeper:
It doesn't apply to software that comes packaged as an installer. Treat all third-party installers with caution.
It can be disabled or overridden by the user.
It can be bypassed by some third-party networking software, such as BitTorrent clients and Java applets (see below.)
It only applies to applications downloaded from the network. Software installed from a CD or other media is not checked.
For more information about Gatekeeper, see this Apple Support article. Notwithstanding the above, the most effective defense against malware attacks is your own intelligence. All known malware on the Internet that affects a fully-updated installation of OS X 10.6 or later takes the form of so-called "trojan horses," which can only have an effect if the victim is duped into running them. If you're smarter than the malware attacker thinks you are, you won't be duped. That means, primarily, that you never install software from an untrustworthy source. How do you know a source is untrustworthy?
Any website that prompts you to install a “codec,” “plug-in,” or “certificate” that comes from that same site, or an unknown one, is untrustworthy.
A web operator who tells you that you have a “virus,” or that anything else is wrong with your computer, or that you have won a prize in a contest you never entered, is trying to commit a crime with you as the victim. [Some reputable websites did legitimately warn users who were infected with the "DNSChanger" malware. That exception to this rule no longer applies.]
“Cracked” copies of commercial software downloaded from a bittorrent are likely to be infected.
Software with a corporate brand, such as Adobe Flash Player, must be downloaded directly from the developer’s website. No intermediary is acceptable.
Java on the network (not to be confused with JavaScript, to which it's not related) is always a potential weak spot in the security of any operating system. If a Java web plugin is not installed, don't install it unless you really need it. If it is installed, you should disable it (not JavaScript) in your web browsers. Few websites have Java content nowadays, so you won’t be missing much. This setting is mandatory in OS X 10.5.8 or earlier, because Java in those obsolete versions has known security flaws that make it unsafe to use on the Internet. The flaws will never be fixed. Regardless of version, experience has shown that Java can never be fully trusted, even if no vulnerabilities are publicly known at the moment.
Follow these guidelines, and you’ll be as safe from malware as you can reasonably be.
Never install any commercial "anti-virus" products for the Mac, as they all do more harm than good. If you need to be able to detect Windows malware in your files, use the free software ClamXav — nothing else.
Why shouldn't you use commercial "anti-virus" products?
Their design is predicated on the nonexistent threat that malware may be injected at any time, anywhere in the filesystem. Malware gets into the system by being downloaded, not by materializing from nowhere.
In order to meet that nonexistent threat, the software duplicates low-level functions of the operating system, which is a waste of resources and a common cause of instability and poor performance.
By modifying the system at a low level, the software itself may create vulnerabilities that could be exploited by malware attackers.
ClamXav doesn't have these drawbacks. -
Startup is very slow in Yosemite.
Hi, I am running a MacBook Pro (17-inch, Early 2009) and I recently upgraded to Yosemite. Since then, startups seem to take an eternity and among other frustrating minor issues, when it automatically goes into sleep mode, sometimes it won't wake up and I have to do a hard restart. Any help would be appreciated.

SQL Developer startup is very slow
I'm finding that the first time I start SQL Developer it takes between 3 mins 30 and 4 mins to start up. This seems far too long. It's installed on a Windows 7 PC in it's own folder in Program Files. What's causing it to be so slow? - virus scanning, JVM startup? Also why are there 3 executables - sqldeveloper.exe in teh root and sqldeveloper and sqldeveoperW in teh bin folder?
SQL Developer Version: 3.0.04
o/s: Windows 7
EricYour "Automatically Check for Updates" option may be turned on. You can look at this setting by going to Tools->Preferences->Extensions. When I unchecked the "Automatically Check for Updates" checkbox my startup times drastically decreased. Hope that helps.

Crystal Report XI Release 2 (Version 11.5.8.826) startup is very slow
Hello
I have a problem that the crystal report software startup take 1 - 2 minutes. After crystal report is loaded, all queries and report are running fast and good.
Running XP, SP2, 3GHZ, 2GB RAM. I have different PC with the same configuration. On each PC is the startup slow. In the beginning (2 months ago) we didn't have this problem.
I have reinstalled crystal and tried the newest SP5. Still the same problem. It takes 1 -2 minutes until crystal is loaded.
We use Crystal Report together with Quantum from SunGard.
Do you have a idea why the startup from Crystal is so slow? I think it must be something with Java or .Net?
I use .Net 3.5 and Java 1.6.
Many thanks for your help!
ThomasHi Thomas
As I understand the issue when you click on application it take long time to start.
Would suggest you to uncheck the option "Check for the Updates on Start" in the help menu of the home page.As it checks for the latest updates and so it takes long time.
Do let me know if situation is diffrent then above.
Regards

Macbook Pro: long startup time / very slow in general
Hello everyone,
I purchased a Macbook Pro 15” in the summer of 2010 before going to university.
The startup time has become ridiculously slow. Even opening a web browser is stressful.
I have now completed my studies and I am pretty sure I have uninstalled all the large software I had installed for my degree and deleted majority of my
document/files however the startup time has not improved.
I have been looking through threads discussing Factory resets?
My Mac did not come with a disk (Snow Leopard originally installed). I simply turned the thing on and it was ready to go.
If I was to reset my Mac to factory settings would I need to purchase a disk? Is there something else that I could do instead?
The problem seemed to materialise when I upgraded to “OS X Mavericks”.
The only software I want to keep on my Mac is Pages, Numbers and Keynote.
I have transferred all the documents I wish to keep to another computer so I do not mind losing everything currently on my Mac.
Any help would be appreciated.
ThanksDo you know what the original disks were? Were they snow Leopard, higher than 10.6.3, they are most likely builld specific.
I can not guarantee that it will speed it up, but if your HD was pretty full 50%+ as well as your caches, it should clear a lot of stuff off the machine that can slow it down. It will probably take a couple hours to go thru this, give or take.
How much of your HD is used, I keep mine at about 20% to help keep it faster, (less stuff to search)
If it is just the speed you are concerned with I will send you some links in regards to that. I answered that you wanted to go back to "New machine" settings, hence my reply.
Slow Mac:

Maybe something here will offer help. The reason for repairing the disk and permissions, etc... is that smetimes the disk gets errors, which the mackine hen has to work around, if it can. Hvaeing your disk much past 50% will slow it down, having caches that have not been emptied and are full of junk can slow it down. Try going to Safari menu clicking reset Safari, empty cache, also go to Safari Preferences/Privacy tab click "remove all website data.
This would be a start. read thru the links, or do a tottal wipe and install.
I hope this has helped you in some way. -
Probook 4540s HHD randomly gets very slow
Hey, I have hp probook 4540s running windows 7 ultimate 64bit.
Problem is HDD sometimes (after startup) being very slow, transfer speeds according to resource monitor are ~200kb/s, windows startup takes around 30minutes. HDD transfer speeds do not get better no much how long u wait.Cpu and memory usages are regular (=low) while this happens. All diagnostic programs (hp ones) do not find any issues.
First I assumed it being a virus or windows problem so I formatted HDD and re-installed win7, a few days went by and it happened again. Computer has latest bios, and drivers, except update sp59047.exe which should be firmware for hdd this computer has. Running this sp59047 opens window which says hdd is correct for this update.. then it restarts computer which ends up in ms-dos looking command prompt saying failure. This environment has autoexec.bat and auto2.bat which both return 'failure' while i try to run them.
HDD itself cant be seen but it has sticker 'replace with hp spare 641672-001 and 8k12a0. I'd expect software issue but this is fresh windows 7 with only regular stuff (firefox, adobe flash, .Net, directx, teamviewer, and kaspersky antivirus).. when problem first time appeared this computer didn't have any antivirus, so likely kaspersky isn't causing it. So, ideas what might be the problem? Lack of that firmware update? HDD about to fail? Computer still has warranty for 2 weeks, but I hate dealing with dealers when problem is something like this which passes build in-tests and happens randomly. Haven't tried with HP yet thou.I am sorry, but to get your issue more exposure I would suggest posting it in the commercial forums since this is a commercial product. You can do this <HERE>

Startup and programs running very slow with Mavericks.
My late 2009 mac mini has been running very slow ever since the Mavericks install. I suspect it may be as simple as RAM capacity but I wanted to verify this assumption, as well as find out any other potential problems. I have gone ahead and run EtreCheck, here are the details of the output, thanks in advance:

Photoshop Elements 11 : very slow startup
Hi
Here is a description of my problem:
I boot my machine.
I start Photoshop Elements 11.
It takes a very long time to get ready ( loading color settings and workshop modes )
I close Photoshop Elements 11 when I am done with my project.
All subsequent startups of Photoshop Elements 11 are very fast.
My question
How can I avoid the very slow FIRST startup of Photoshop Elements 11 ?
Can I pre-load the needed services (or whatever) when I boot my machine or when I login to my user account ?
Thank you in advance for your helpThank you very much, Pat, for your great help. The link has inspired me to download the trial version from the Adobe website and go from there:
"Adobe Download Assistant" was automatically downloaded before the download of the trial version began. With the "Adobe Download Assistant" up and running, the download of the trial version took within 30 minutes. I then got to enter the serial code of my already purchased PSE 12 right after installation of the trial version and completed the whole set-up process (without even opening or using the trial version at all).
It is rather counter-intuitive that one should start with a trial download even when he has gone straight into buying the product. It was as if the trial version was a bridge to facilitate the official download because the trial version provided the "Adobe Download Assistant". Maybe, it is expected that people would always take a trial before buying? Or maybe, it is expected that most people would already have the "Adobe Download Assistant" handy?
Anyway, I am glad there is a solution. In this case, I think the key is to get the "Adobe Download Assistant" which comes with the trial version. Hope this post will help others who might face the same issue too.
Many thanks again. -

Master is very Slow, Because Slave Takes 20 minutes for "startup done"
I have two db env to be backup for each other. I stopped one db env for 5 minutes, then restarted it. I found that it took over 20 minutes to receive the db callback event "startup done". During these time, there were transactions in the master db env. I guess this makes the sync_up process take so long time.
I used the ack policy "DB_REPMGR_ACKS_ONE_PEER" and used "txn no sync" flag for transaction, so during these 25 minutes, master is very slow.
My requirement is master can resume its performance as soon as slave comes back. Can slave accept the log before its sync completed? Or any other way to solve this issue? Most likely what happened is that the stopped dbenv is the only site/peer able to
send the acknowledgement. If it is stopped but not disconnected, then the master
will wait the full ACK timeout for every txn.
It is also likely that during that 5 minutes, log files were archived and when the
stopped dbenv became active again, it had to perform an internal initialization
from scratch. That copies over every page of every database and then the logs
needed to resynchronize. If you have a lot and/or very large database files,
that can take a long time.
The client cannot send any acks until it completes its synchronization. One
way to avoid this would be to perform a manual hot backup to the client before
starting up the application. You would have to copy over all database files, then
all log files from the master (in that order) and then run catastrophic recovery
in that client directory. Then start up your application and the client should be
able to quickly synchronize.
You can control this in the application by setting DB_REP_CONF_NOAUTOINIT
to DB_ENV->rep_set_config. You'll get back an error that tells you that the site
needs an re-initialization and you can do that copying then.
