IMovie 9.0.2 unstable on 2011 MacBook Pro
iMove 9.0.2 has been hanging on creating thumbnails and also exporting projects on my new MacBook Pro 15" (i7 Quad core 2.2GHz). It works fine on my 2008 8 core Mac Pro processing the same files. On the MacBook Pro though it typically stops in the middle of creating thumbnails after importing a 1 hour clip. The CPU % goes from about 30-50% to < 1% and the progress bar stops moving and the time to go keeps going up. I have to force quit iMovie after which the thumbnails are all grey. I also tried importing the event from my Mac Pro which worked OK, however when I tried to export the project to large format again the process stopped in the middle this time with high ( 250% ) CPU but no progress bar movement and again force quite required. I thought it might be some other programs I had transferred from my old Mac, but when I tried again using a brand new installation of 10.6.6 to a firewire attached drive, and only adding iLife 11 the same problem occurred. I also tried old versions of iMovie from my time machine backup both version 9 and also the last version of 8 and again the same problem occurred. Could it be some incompatibility with the new MacBook Pro architecture? Is anyone else having the same problem?
After much testing and running the hardware diagnosis disk I discovered the hard drive had faults ( a 750Gb 5400 rpm ) which subsequently turned out to have many bad blocks ( as detected by Drive Genius 3 ).
A replacement disk has been ordered by my local Apple Store.

How much would it cost to replace a hard drive on a 2011 macbook pro? My old one is full!
I have a 2011 Macbook Pro with the 8gb hard drive. My drive is 99% full. I am a photographer and the pictures I have take up 90% of my drive. I have Carbonite so they are all backed up. I can get an external hard drive and dump the pictures there but I would rather keep them on the computer. I can upgrade my OS and increase my memory at the same time. I can do it myself but my concern is I also have a large iMovie library and I'm not sure what will happen with that if I use Carbonite to restore the new hard drive. Carbonite cannot answer that question. Will my local Apple Store even do this for me?
<Personal Information Edited by Host>No, not your memory. "Memory" refers to RAM. What you need is "storage space." Storage space is on the hard drive. Were I you I might think about buying a larger HDD to install in your computer. Remove the one you now have and put it into an external enclosure. That is your backup for now as well as what you will use to boot the computer so you can setup the new internal drive.
How to replace or upgrade a drive in a laptop
Step One:Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger, Leopard or Snow Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
Step Two: Remove the old drive and install the new drive. Place the old drive in an external USB enclosure. You can buy one at OWC who is also a good vendor for drives.
Step Three: Boot from the external drive. Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager appears. Select the icon for the external drive then click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Step Four: New Hard Drive Preparation
1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
2. After DU loads select your new hard drive (this is the entry with the
mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of
the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive
is failing or has failed and will need replacing. Otherwise, click on the
Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from
the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended
(Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to
GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and
wait until the process has completed.
4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the
drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main
window.
5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the
Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to
return to the Erase window.
6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several
hours depending upon the drive size.
Step Five: Clone the old drive to the new drive
1. Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
4. Check the box labeled Erase destination.
5. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the
Destination entry field.
6. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the
Source entry field.
7. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the new internal drive. Source means the old external drive.
Step Six: Open the Startup Disk preferences and select the new internal volume. Click on the Restart button. You should boot from the new drive. Eject the external drive and disconnect it from the computer. -
I have software that is no longer compatible with my 2011 MacBook Pro that I would like to continue to use.
When I upgraded my old 2007 MBP from Tiger to Leopard, I did a clean install on a new drive, and put the original internal in an external case.
This same software did not work with Leopard, but I could boot into the old drive when necessary, and use it that way.
But so far, I have not been able to do this with the new computer.
Since that MBP had an Intel processor, shouldn't I be able to boot into the old drive, or is the problem due to the i7's quad core?
BTW, I have Parallels 7 (and 8 available, but not installed yet) running WIndows Pro 7.
Can I use Parallels to install Mac 10.4 as a VM as a way around this?
Thanks. You can upgrade from10.4 to 10.6 with no problems. Any program that runs under 10.4 will run under10.6 but you might have to upgrade some drivers for printers, etc.... I recently upgraded an 2006 MacBook (model 1,1) from 10.4 to 10.6.
You can order a Snow Leopard 10.6 install disk for $29 as long as you have at least1gb of RAM and 5gb offree space on your hard drive. http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573Z/A?mco=MTY3ODQ5OTY You won't need the box set unless you want the full iLife '11 and iWork '09. If you only want iPhoto or other single apps you can get them from the App Store after you've upgraded to10.6.6. iPhoto, iMovie or Garage Band for $15 each and Pages, Keynote or Numbers for $20 each.
A 10.5 Leopard disk will run you over $100 -
Late 2011 Macbook Pro Restarts When Power Connected
I have a late 2011 Macbook Pro, 2.2 GHz with 8GB Ram with OS X 10.8.2 and a series of unfortunate events.
When I connect the magsafe adapter to the computer, after it has been shut down completely overnight, with the lid closed, the Macbook attempts to restart. The restart fails beause the lid is closed but leaves my Macbook in an unstable state. Unless I do a PRAM reset whenever this happens, I will have at least one random shutdown, usually within the first half hour of use after the computer restarts itself. I have also reset the SMC controller, checked the hard drive for errors and tested the memory. I have been careful to make sure that the computer shuts all of the way down before closing the lid and disconnecting power. As far as I can tell at this point, starting the computer on battery, and subsequently connecting the magsafe adapter, does not cause any problems.
I never saw this behavior until I installed Mountain Lion.Run an Apple hardware test and see if that picks up any problems. If this phenomenon is consistently repeatable, I recommend taking it to a repair facility for a diagnosis. This clearly is not normal operation. I hope that you might be still in the warrantee period.

I have an Early 2011" macbook pro 13 inch (core i5 2.3ghz 4gb ram 320hdd) with Mountain Lion 10.8.2, and I want to connect it via Mini DP to HDMI connector, and a HDMI cable to a LCD TV LG 32LD340. When I had Lion OS, I had no problems at all.
If you have an external drive equal to or larger than your internal HD, clone your internal to it with either Carbon Copy Cloner or Super Duper. Test the clone to make sure it's bootable. Then upgrade either one. Try it out first.

Hi i cannot change the brightness on my late 2011 macbook pro.
Hi i cannot change the brightness on my late 2011 macbook pro. It is stuck on the lowest level in which i can't view the screen without a flash light. Please i need help how to solve this. I was on my computer when i checked the back which it was really dusty, i tried unscrewing the bottom however some screws were too tight so i took it upon myself and got a rod and startedremoving the dust off the vents and i may have clicked something as i closed the lid on the macbook i could hear the sounds still from the film but the lid was closed as i opened it back up the brightness was on low but sounds were still playing. All the buttons work , all of the F keys, apart from the brightnes keys. I can shine a tourch on the screen and see the display but the brightness will not change but i can see when i click the brightness it says it changes. I have connected it to a spare tv i have via hdmi and i really need help as this is my primary computer and i need it for work when going away. Thank you
Try SMC and PRAM resets:

LaCie Desktop Manager doesn't recognize LaCie RAID with my 2011 MacBook Pro
Hello,
I have a new MacBook Pro 17" but I am not able to use the LaCie Desktop Manager with the LaCie 4big Quadra Enterprise Class RAID. The drive is recognized by the finder via eSATA, FireWire, USB, but is not recognized by the LaCie Desktop Manager. This prevents me from encrypting the drive. The LaCie Desktop Manager could recognize the raid with my early 2008 MacBook Pro.
I'd like to know if anyone else is having the same problem with their 2011 MacBook Pro.
I have been communicating with LaCie support but he tells me that he can't check the same or similar configuration as mine.
Thanks,
DennisLooks like the cable is the same if you still have the 2010.

WIP: My adventures with 2011 MacBook Pro and Windows 8.1 including seconday HDD
So I've just lost about 3 days of my life trying to install Windows 8.1 (my preferred) operating system on a Late 2011 MacBook Pro.
I feel that I've learnt a lot and hopefully can share my experiences to speed a few of you along the process. This is my own experience please let me know if anything I have documented is not true and I will revise for completeness
What my initial goal was to have a dual HD set up with an SSD running both Mac OSX and Windows 8.1 (via Bootcamp) with a 2ndry HD in places of the optical (DVD) drive for shared storage.
I have tried all/some of the following:
Win 8.1 ISO from the MS site: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-GB/windows-8/create-reset-refresh-media
USB created using Rufus for Bios and EFI boot
DVD created using Windows 8.1 (can't remember how)
Yosemite USB created using: Create a bootable installer for OS X Mavericks or Yosemite - Apple Support
There are 2 main options when installing Windows:
Bios
EFI
Both have different pros and cons, which Im going to try and document here:
Bios
Full driver support via Bootcamp download
Slower (mainly boot time, not by much though)
Not quite as "native" as some may prefer
Limited number of partitions??
EFI
Fast
Native
Does not support video driver properly (no dual screen)
Audio does not work (says Failed to start device)
Here are some random facts I know
Windows DVD will only boot from optical drive when connected internally. If plugged in via external USB it stops at black screen with flashing cursor and doesnt progress
Using 5HT-2a's method on Redit (see below) and the EFI install, I get the Cx0000005 cannot find source media error and cannot install
Hacking the Bootcamp tool to create a Windows 8 ISO with all the drivers works (see link below) but when using it in EFI it crashes repeatedly during install so you never can complete the process (I think this is due to the video drivers) and therefore can't run Bootcamp assistant thus get proper trackpad support
Using lion10's method (below) for tweaking a standard Mac partitioned HD I was able to get past the cannot install Windows error ("windows cannot be installed to this disk. the selected disk is of the GPT partition style") and install Windows using EFI
Best guides/links I have found:
lion10's method:The ultimate way to install Windows 8.x in (U)EFI mode on Apple systems
5HT-2a's method: http://www.reddit.com/r/mac/comments/2fy3be/by_popular_demand_my_better_than_boo tcamp_guide/
skipsizemore's method: Can't install Windows 8 x64 on late 2013 MBP with1TB SSD
Bootcamp drivers 2 versions depending on Mac:
Older Macs: Boot Camp Support Software 5.1.5621
Newer Macs (most 2013+): Boot Camp Support Software 5.1.5640
Bootcamp Assistant Hack for USB creation on older Macs: http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1680652There is an additional parameter required if you are using Yosemite during code signing (-deep I think, but cant remember)What I ended up doing (so far)
I'm not 100% sure of the state of my disk when I got to where I ended up but I had previous completed the GDisk and DISKPART methods from 5HT-2a and lion10's methods. I was using a 128gb SSD
I then decided to start from the top (as I had previous installed Win 8.1 on the original HD using DVD)
So I ran the Yosemite installer (via USB) and used the partition tab in Disk Utility to repartition the disk into 2 partitions, 1 for OSX and 1 (ExFat/NTFS) for Windows
I then booted in Bios (Windows, not EFI) using the Windows 8.1 DVD using the DVD plugged in internally (wouldnt work using USB enclosure)
Installed Windows to the partition I created (probably the 4th one)
After Windows installed, ran the Bootcamp set up program
Reran Yosemite installer and installed Yosemite
Swapped out the optical drive for a larger HD (7200rpm) and formatted it with HFS+ -
Plugging 2011 Macbook pro into my HDMI TV
Hello all. I am about to buy a 2011 13" Macbook Pro. My first Mac. I have done some reading on the mini display port and it's computability with HDMI. From what I've read it is also known as DP++ and it passes the signal straight through as HDMI with the use of an adapter. However, the audio is only passed through if the PC supports HDMI signaling, which I believe the 2009 Macbooks didn't. I don't know if that's since changed on the new models. I have read that you have to use an adapter then plug that into a cable with DVI on one end and HDMI on the other and then use a "y" cable for the audio plugged into your amp for sound. I have seen on a Display Port web page, what looked like an adapter with display port one side and HDMI the other, does this exist as it seems better than the DVI to HDMI approach.
So in summary
1) What's the best way to connect my 2011 Macbook Pro to my HDMI TV ?
2) Can I get the audio to the TV through the Display Port without having to use a Y cable from the Macs audio out ?
ThanksDoes the MiniDisplay -> HDMI adapter work with the new MacBook Pro (early 2011) ?

Airplay mirroring on early 2011 macbook pro not mirroring
First, here's what I have:
Early 2011 macbook pro (identifier 8,3) with 2.2 Intel Core i7 processor connected over Wifi on 2.4 Ghz channel.
OSX 10.8 Mountain Lion
Apple TV 3 (fully up to date)
The stats I've read say airplay mirroring should work fine. I can connect both machines just fine. I can stream movies just fine. I can send music just fine. I just cannot mirror my desktop. I have the icons, a connection is made, but all that shows is a blank screen. I've adjusted the resolutions with no luck. I've shut down and rebooted both machines with no luck...
Any solutions or do I have to count my losses with Apple Airplay and spend more money on a 3rd party alternative (AirParrot)?Hi eoinodonnell,
The problem was resolved, but I have the worst answer... it just started working, and has remained reliable since. I never found out exactly what fixed it, but I would try these things:
1) Try a factory reset on the Apple TV, and make sure your Macbook pro has all the latest updates.
2) Try to repair disk permissions (better to do it from disk utility from boot menu) and reboot your macbook.
3) Backup your files and do a fresh install of OSX.
I know I performed all these tasks, and possibly more, but something along the way did fix the problem.
I hope something here works! If so, please let me know what did it. -
Early 2011 MacBook Pro incredibly slow after installing Mavericks
I'm really hoping someone can help me out. As per the subject line, I installed Mavericks on day one (and learned my lesson!).
Since installing Mavericks my MacBook Pro runs incredibly slow. If I open the Mail App and Safari - it almost grinds to a halt. I have the "Memory Clean" App which I now have to run constantly (it appears to help a little) and I try to only launch one app at a time where possible, but it's not really pratical.
As an aside, my MacBook ran really well with Mountain Lion, so there's little doubt to my mind that Mavericks is the culprit.
I'd be eternally grateful for any help & advice :-)
I spotted other people advise running EtreCheck, here are my results:

CleanMyMac is crapware.
Crapware is anything that purports to "optimize", "clean", "accelerate", "monitor", or "protect" your Mac. These apps are unnecessary, poorly written, overpriced (if they were free, they'd still be overpriced), and harmful. The people who sell this stuff know this, but they keep selling it because people keep buying it. They can damage your OS and be difficult to uninstall.
I would try to uninstall it, but if that fails, you may have to erase your HD and do a clean install.
