IMovie: Adding a static sidebar to a video?

Hi all,
I've never posted on here before, but I'm hoping someone can help. I'm trying to use iMovie to create a video with an effect like this YouTube video. I just want a simple image that runs constantly over half of the screen. I can lay the text in there easily, I can get the pictures to change using different wipe transitions, but I don't know how I'd get an image (that isn't a straight-edged box) to lay over the rest of the video.
I tried creating the image where the background is bright green so I could attempt to use the empty space with a green screen effect, but that didn't work. If there's a strategy to lay a custom image over a section of the video, I'd love to learn about it.

Hello again everyone,
So after some manual labor, I was able to create a reasonable solution. Using GIMP (a free image editing software), I created the image below. I used iMovie's green screen function to lay my sidebar over the rest of my video. I did run into a problem with transitions between slides, since transitions are not allowed under a green screen.
To get around that I created the video with all of its transitions, but NO green screen or sidebar. Just a movie of slides and transitions. I exported that basic movie, imported it back into iMovie and easily laid the green screen over it.
The only catch is that I couldn't use the colors I wanted (light blue/turquoise) because they're too close to the green screen color and ended up faded rather than bold. So I chose darker, more contrasting colors. I'd say that the end product was definitely a success.

Installed mavericks ok, but iMovie 10 will not install because of video card deficiency.

I installed mavericks without difficulty on my 2007 iMac. However I can not install iMovie 10 that comes with Mavericks. The prompt tell me that my video cards are inadequate. Can I upgrade the video cards, and if so how costly will it be?

A tip how to make iMovie '08 rescan the iPhoto library for video clips

I could not figure out how to easily force iMovie '08 to rescan all iPhoto library video clips. My problem was that my Casio S880 videos had the audio format DVI ADPCM which is not supported by iMovie '08. I made a script which transcoded all my iPhoto library videos' audio track to AAC. But after this was done, the iMovie didn't still show them in iPhoto videos. iMovie checks only for NEW entries in iPhoto Library after last scan.
One simple workaround is to duplicate the transcoded video in iPhoto and then delete the original. But if you have a lot of clips here is a better way to do this:
NOTE: This trick does not reimport already imported clips. This trick is useful only if you want to force iMovie '08 to recheck old iPhoto movie clips if they are now valid for iMovie '08 or not.
1. Close iMovie '08
2. Open file HOME/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iMovie7.plist with the Property List Editor application (I think the application is part of Apple Developer Tools, I'm not sure if included in default installation). You may want to take a backup of the property file before opening it!
3. Find "lastiPhotoXMLDate" property and change the date value to be some older date, for example if you want to scan all files just change the year part to 1980 or similar.
4. Save the property file
5. Open iMovie '08, it should now check all iPhoto movie clips again if they are valid for iMovie '08.
The same thing can be achieved by just deleting the HOME/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iMovie7.plist file, but then you lose all your other settings.

I apologize for my confusion on your question. I find that depending on the principal of each photo and my target audience to determine the time frame for each photo. It seems most people get impatient with viewing one photo for more than 1-2 seconds if the photo is not complex.
If there are several things that interests the viewers in any one image, they want to look at it a second or two longer. If the movie of images is a training aid, the images may need to be more than 3 seconds. For intro's, or a trailer for a training movie, no longer than 1-2 seconds.
That was a long answer to say, generally speaking, I find 3 seconds to be an average time length.

I am in the process of preparing to test a sample from your brand and model camera in my Premiere Elements 8.0/8.0.1 on Windows 7 64 bit. I will have the results probably tomorrow morning.
For now I just want to put you through the drill that I do for anyone who says he/she is using Premiere Elements 8.0/8.0.1.
1. Are you working from the 8.0/8.0.1 Update of the program?

2. Do you have the automatic Background Rendering and AutoAnalyzer features turned OFF.
For Background Rendering option. See Edit Menu/Preferences/General.
For AutoAnalyzer option. Click on Organizer in the row below the blue active Organize header in order to open the Elements Organizer. In the Elements Organizer workspace, go to Edit Menu/Preferences/AutoAnalyzer Options and disable all the AutoAnalzyer options. To return to the Premiere Elements workspace from the Elements Organizer workspace, in the Elements Organizer workspace, go to File Menu/Exit.
Is your computer optimized in spite of the fact that you have a high end laptop? I presumed so but always go to verify, no pile ups of preview files, conformed video and audio files et al.
Looking at the properties of your source media, I see:
video compression = MPEG1
audio compression = MPEG-Layer1 (.mp2)
Frame Size = 640 x 480 (4:3)
Pixel Aspect Ratio = 1.0
Frame Rate = 30 progressive frames per second
With properties like those you are sure to get a red line over that content since there is no project preset with that description.
But, your choice of the default NTSC DV Standard would have been mine also.
I am heading to try to get a quick look at the behavior of the sample video here in my Premiere Elements 8.0/8.0.1.

Is there a way to permanently set items you have added to the sidebar?

Every time I log out or restart my computer, the items I've added to the sidebar disappear. Is there any way to edit a .plist file or something to make these items a permanent part of my sidebar? Thanks for any help with this.

I recently left Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion.
Previously, in the side bar of Mail, (the one you make visible using "Show" in a previous post here), I was able to drag and drop any of the Reception mailboxes to the place I wanted to select, to put them in the order I wished, and this order remained until I decide to change it.
This seems not possible any more, or... just for the current session. If I close Mail and reopen, Reception boxes are re-ordered in alphabetic way.
Any way to make my choice permanent as before ???
To make it more clear, ordering my way is possible by drag and dropping for private mailboxes, but not for reception mailboxes associated to different mail accounts, the order is lost once Mail is closed.

Michael: are you still using an old version o0f PSE (e.g. PSE V4)? Problems similar to the one that you described are relatively frequent in old PSE Versions ( I was suffering a lot from them)..... and there are quite seldom in newer PSE versions. Unfortunately, I do not remember which PSE Version became much better in this area (was it V5? or V6?)
If using an older PSE version and encoutering often the problem: consider to migrate to a newer PSE Version..

As a test, try dragging, while holding the Ctrl/Cmd modifier key, that "music" to Audio Track 2, and the "bird sounds" SFX file to Audio Track Audio Track 3. There have reports from other users, where the Fixed Audio Tracks, Narration and Soundtrack have caused problems. Those problems seem to be Project-specific. If your Timeline does not have Audio Tracks 1 - 3 already, you can use Add Tracks. The use of the Ctrl/Cmd key, changes how PrE handles existing files on the Timeline, when adding Assets. This usually comes into play, when one is adding Video, or Stills, and should not really affect those, when only adding Audio, but remember, this is only a test.

Imovie is not generating thumbnails for MPG video files

Hi everyone,
I have what I hope is a quick question with an easy solution. I'm using iMovie '09 8.0.6 to make a movie for my parents of their granddaughter. Imovie has generated thumbnails for all my video in iPhoto (most of which is .mov format), but two short clips (about a minute in length each) were apparently taken with a different camera and are in .mpg format. For some reason, imovie is not generating thumbnails for these .mpg videos, though in the past I have never experienced a problem here. What is wrong? What can I do to get these clips into iMovie or have iMovie generate these thumbnails?

No, the orientation is not the issue, The first set of 4 imported videos were from a GoPro 3 camera, and the one that was lost doing an "update thumbnail" operation was also a GoPro3 fie.
Just now I did another experiment, I chose to update thumbnail from a video file created with my Pentax WG-3 and it worked.
I updated thumbnail on a horizontal and verticle video from my Galaxy S3, and now those are also gone with no thumbnail...
So far the only one that actually works for me is the Pentax video, which is a MOV file. , the GoPro 3 and Galaxy are mp4 files, so it's possible that the mp4 format has something to do with it. This is very frustrating losing my thumbnails like this.... Luckily I have not deleted ver11 yet.
I hope they repair this issue soon.

I have a bunch of videos in my iPhoto'09 library that I took with my digital camera. I wanted to organize and edit the videos with iMovie but almost 1/2 of the videos I have in iPhoto'09 do not appear in iMovie'09.
Any suggestions?

Can iMovie 11 import and work with 24FPS video shot at 1920x1080P? I ask this because the new Nikon D7000 captures video at this frame rate, and I know the Canon EOS 7D and 5D MarkII also do. I was told "yes" by the technical support rep.
Can someone please confirm whether you can import/edit/export a 24FPS timeline?

In earlier versions of iMovie you can also do this using Quicktime Pro 7:
Open MOV file in QT Pro (QT 7.6.6)
Window -> Show Movie Properties
select "Video Track"
select "Visual Settings" from lower window
check "Preserve Aspect Ratio"
Click on appropriate rotation icon (MOV rotates!)
Click back on the open MOV in Player Window
FILE -> Save
