Imovie (and all other ilife apps) Crashing or not opening

Hey Everyone,
I'm running a new Imac intel and have been having issues lately with all of my ilife applications. I have used them all before and they worked fine. Edited movies in imovie and went right through idvd and everything. Used itunes everyday.. But lately, they're all getting a bti crashey. itunes will not even allow me to click on some of my playlists. And it's not overloaded with tunes.. I've only had the system a few months .
I can't even open Imovie or idvd. I've deleted the prefs and removed all the movie files from the movies folder. But that only gets me as far as being able to open imovie with a new proiject.. but... as soon as i try to import footage or open an old file it crashes.
I've tried zapping the p-ram deleting the prefs and reinstalling the apps. all to no avail. It just got me as far as being able to import some clips into imovie. But as soon as i went to save or even click on an imported clip it'd crash..
I have no idea where to go next with this.. i posted it in the imovie forum as that's the app I'm trying to use at the moment... Any help would be greatly appreciated..
Thanks!!

I've been having the same problem for the past week or so on my Powerbook, which I've had for nearly two years, and which has run beautifully until now.
It started last week with iTunes; I uninstalled 7.02 and reinstalled 6.5. That seemed to solve the problem.
Unfortunately now, this morning, after trying to update Quicktime, I find that none of my iLife apps will open. I've repaired the disk permissions -- it didn't work.
Guess I'll try to reinstall the iLife suite this evening, but I'm getting a little nervous. I do remember installing a security update last week, and the problems started shortly thereafter. I wonder if that's more than a mere coincidence?

  • IPhoto (and all other iLife apps) crash upon opening.

so I recently had a HD failure, and of course backed nothing up... so I went and got a new HD put in at a reseller, no problems. I recently realized that none of the "non-free" apps were installed, so I ran the install discs again (bundled software only of course) and installed iPhoto, garageband, etc. Unfortunately, none of them will open. The icon will bounce once in the dock and "quit unexpectedly."

The files that Terence mentions are receipts that the installer looks for to see what applications and versions are already installed. They have nothing to do with your iPhoto Library and the photos. Also the application and library are separate entities.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

Did you activate home sharing in both your iTunes and ATV?
Also try signing out of the ATV (Apple ID) and signing back in again.

I've tried clearing cache, logging in and out, switching off iMac.
I'm using latest OS X and Safari versions.
The problem seems to have crept to my iOS devices, which now register non-sync'd versions of my reminders lists, and which will not update via iClou

Gawd, how have you managed not to update it?! The current version is Version 3.1.2 (4525.22)!
Small wonder it won't work with 10.4.11.
Have you ever used Software Updater to check whether there are any updates available for your Mac?
I would recommend that you download the latest version from here:
    http://www.apple.com/safari/download/
But please make sure that you download the version for Tiger and not for Leopard.
BUT before you do so, and before you install it, please go through the following routine:
Repairing permissions is an important part of regular maintenance, and should always be carried out both before and after any software installation or update.
Go to Disk Utility (this is in your Utilities Folder in your Application folder) and click on the icon of your hard disk (not the one with all the numbers).
In First Aid, click on Repair Permissions.
This only takes a minute or two.
    Background information here:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25751
    and here:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302672
If you were having any serious problems with your Mac you might as well complete the exercise by repairing your hard disk as well. You cannot do this from the same start-up disk. Reboot from your install disk (holding down the C key). Once it opens, select your language, and then go to Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Select your hard disk as before and click Repair.
Once that is complete reboot again from your usual start-up disk.

Resolve startup issues and perform disk maintenance with Disk Utility and fsck

If all is OK, install the new Safari, and REBOOT, then repair permissions again.

  • Finder and certain apps crashing or not opening

    Hi there,
As of this morning I've been having some pretty major problems with my 2011 iMac running Mavericks (10.9.1).
A large number of apps will simply not open; they flash on the dock briefly then instantly disappear. This also sometimes happens with the Finder - when I do get finder to work, it constantly restarts itself.
I've read that this may be an issue caused by using CleanMyMac and I'll likely need to do a full reinstall - however I can't transfer a lot of my essential files to my external hard drive seeing as Finder keeps crashing. The other issue is I can't even launch the App Store to download a copy of Mavericks - and even if I could, Finder wouldn't let me put it on a USB drive anyway because it'd just crash.
The problem persists after repairing my disk and permissions, still occurs with a different user. I have also tried safe mode to no avail.
My question is - does anyone know a way to AT LEAST resolve the Finder/App Store issue? I'm not too fussed if I can transfer off my important data and do a full reinstall, seeing as it's the start of the year and a fresh HDD wouldn't hurt. If someone knows how to solve the entire problem, well, that'd be just awesome.
I understand I'll probably need to submit a log of something - not sure what though.
Thanks a lot for any help,
    Matt

Sorry, a clean install. As I said, I can't download the installer because the App Store won't open.
Even if I could there's no way to then make a bootable USB drive to do the clean install from as my Finder keeps crashing when I attempt to transfer anything to another drive.

  • Help! I am making an iPhoto book and all of a sudden it will not open and I get a huge error message which is supposedly sent to Apple.  How do I access that site????

    Mac osX 10.6.8
    iBook - old version
can not access Safari - going through Chrome
All of a sudden my IBook would not open (100 pages and almost finished)
Error message sent to Apple - how do I access them??????
Thank you for any help you can give me
    <Email Edited by Host>

Do you mean, you have been creating a Photo Book in iPhoto? Or an iBook in iBook Author?
If you are asking about a photo book in iPhoto, what was the last you did in iPhoto, before the crash happened?  Did you add a page with a map?
Then you may have a problem with a bug, where adding a route to a map may render the book unreadable.  In that case the best option is to restore the iPhoto library from the last backup you made, before you added the map to the book.
It is not possible to open the book and to delete the unreadable page. You can only delete the book and start over, if this bug is the reason for the crashes. See for example this link:  Getting rid of problem photo book

  • Updated to 2.0.1 and all my current Apps crash

I updated to the new 2.0.1 Software update for my iPhone 3G and it has, from the time I installed it, caused a majority if not all my apps to crash. I have tried uninstalling them from the phone and reinstalling them through iTunes but still nothing seems to work
Is there a way to solve this??

You have to wait for updates of your apps being published in the App Store.

  • Final Cut is Crashing--Will not Open

OK, I have repaired permissions, trashed preferences, unloaded all the audio plugins (mostly because they take forever when FCP opens), and finally reinstalled FCP Studio 2.
The only thing on my startup disk is OSX SL and programs. I always work off external drives. I have had this setup for some time now - since SL came out and all of a sudden FCP will not open, and I get the following Crash report. All other FCP Studio2 apps open.
I also have a recent install of Logic Studio, but FCP was working after this for a few weeks.
I have also seen this post that refers to illegal copies of FCP.
"Yes the answer is simple. The new prokit update recommended for users of FCP will DISABLE any version of FCP that might have come from a less-than-legitimate source if you know what I mean. very clever.
I got a new copy of FCP 6 and it installed and works perfectly but I won't be downloading any more apple updates unless I'm positive they don't contain any more "fixes" like this."
I have used FCP since version 1.x and have dutifully upgraded, except for the latest FCP Studio 3 upgrade. Listen, I need to use this program
    Please Help!!

    Shane,
Thanks!! I am aware of that software, after today. I will look into it. Is it through the FCS Maintenance Pack that I will have the ability to disable the offending plugin?
That is a bummer that it is that plugin as I wind up using that a lot for footage that is submitted by certain "monkeys" to the projects I work on. I actually call it the "Monkey Cam" filter.
In any case, I appreciate your help here. I removed the plugin from its folder and tries to open FCP and ...it crashed again. So it might be another plugin?
There was a lot more to the crash results, as I have a lot of plugins, but the board would not let me post such a long post. Would you be open to me adding this and running that too? I am not sure I want to drop the $130 or so on FCS Maintenance, and am kind of tossing around upgrading to FCS3 instead - in hopes that will fix the issue?
Let me know and I will post the remaining code. Mahalo.

  • I have unlocked my iPhone 3G with Vodafone via iTunes, but now the downloaded apps crash immediately when opened. I've tried a Restore, but this didn't help. I've also tried removing all apps and re-installing them, but they still don't work. Any ideas?

yep, unfortunately can't reset without the passcode either.
With regards to doing a restore, do you mean:
    open itunes on my computer
click on my device on the left
    go to the device summary
    click restore
it then asks if i want to back up before i restore (to which i say no)
then it asks me if i'm sure I want to restore to factory settings and that all of me media and data will be erased and replaced with the newest version ( to which I say yes)
then it takes about 90 mins to do this but when I look at my phone, everything is exactly the same.
Am I missing something? Obviously I'm technologically challenged, but I HAVE to get to the bottom of this!

Based on our conversation you seem to be new to the Mac, am I right?
If yes, that is okay. I will provide you with more detailed instructions.
Open a Finder window. On the left side of the window, there are lists on folders. One of them is the applications folder. You can also access the applications folder by pressing Shift+Command+A when you are in Finder.
This folder contains ALL applications that is installed on your computer. Your Dock only shows shortcuts, SOME of the applications in the Applications folder. The Dock is designed for easy access so users don't have to go to the Applications folder every time to launch an app.
If you want to use, say iMovie, you can drag the iMovie app icon from the Applications folder to the Dock for future easy access.
    I hope this helps.
As for contacting Apple, I provided you with a URL link in my previous post.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
This is normal. OS X doesn't come with iLife apps, so you have to reinstall them after reinstalling Mac OS X.
If your Mac came without DVDs or you purchased it after July 2011, you have to install the iLife applications from the Mac App Store. Open the Mac App Store, log in with your Apple ID, go to Purchases and download GarageBand, iMovie and iPhoto free of charge.
If your Mac came with DVDs and you didn't purchase the iLife apps in the Mac App Store, insert the Applications DVD and install the iLife apps. Then, open  > Software Update, and install the latest iLife applications version

I've tried both. First, I tried on my pc, where iTunes had installed iCloud when it last updated. I have iTunes installed on this computer (and on my iPad and iPhone), but that wasn't the issue.
So I went online, thinking I needed a separate iCloud Apple ID, but it prompted me for my current Apple ID and gave me the message about my ID being "valid" but not an iCloud account," which, lol, was what it had asked me to do in order to create one. I checked, and at least one other user is having the same issue. I'll attempt to copy/paste the Support request url: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4430653?tstart=0
Thank you for any help you can give.
