IMovie and Camcorders

I would like to buy a new camcorder. I want to make sure that it will work seemlessly with iMovie. Oh what about in low light, is it possible to find a camcorder that will work low lighting. Or will I still have to put one of those living room lamps at the dance hall. I'm looking at about $1500 range.

jcc31,
You don't even have to spend that much.
Here's a recent thread with some good suggestions.

Today's camera do remarkably well in low light.

  • Imovie and Sony harddrive camcorders

This really has me confused. I keep reading posts in this forums where knowledgable people are saying don't buy harddrive Sony's as they will not work with mac using usb and imovies and to work you have to buy a mini tapes camera and use firewire. Well I purchased a Sony DCR-SR82 (60gig hard drive)and I have the imac do 20 intel. After reading the advice of some great people in this forum I downloaded MPEG Streamclip (free) and the Apple Quicktime plugin mpeg viewer ($19)so now I connect my Sony by USB2 and download the movies to Streamclip, convert to dv and then make movies with imovie and burn with idvd and everything so far works great. It is so nice to not bother with tapes and the Sony makes great vidios. Also I believe that imovie makes better videos that the Sony software for the pc side. I just wanted to share in case other people might want to try this also. jim_joh2

    Hi jim:
I am one of those that often suggests that imovie users should not purchase Harddrive cameras, but only IF
*The harddrive camera does not have a firewire or USB2 port
    Or if
*The user wants to import directly to imovie from the camera without having to use third-party applications
Many folks here just want to 'plug and play' their cameras. It's those that do not understand how to convert (or those who do want to convert) that usually get the advice of not getting a Hard Drive Camera.
Also, there may be some quality reduction when converting from MPEG-2 to .dv (and then back again if you want to burn a DVD).

  • Use Camcorder for iMovie and iChat?

    Hi,
I want to find a way to be able to plug a video camera into my iBook to use with iMovie and iChat.
I'm having a difficult finding a definitive solution in finding a webcam to use with my iBook.
Does anyone know if a firewire camcorder will work with iMovie and iChat? (iBook, 500mhz, 384mb RAM, running Panther.
    Thanks very much,
    Ted

    Hi Ted,
In addition to Tom's good comments, here are a couple of other things that may be of interest.
I would suggest you select a Mini-DV camcorder that claims Mac compatibility with Panther (OS X 10.3.9). Some other camcorders may not work easily with at least one of the two apps you specify. For instance, if you decide to get a Canon Mini-DV, see this Apple article concerning a possible FireWire Issue With Some Canon Mini-DV Cameras.
If your 500mhz iBook has a G3 processor, its processor power falls below Apple's minimum iChat AV: System requirements (for iChat 2.1 video). (Mac OS X 10.4: iChat AV system 3.x requirements are different.)
iChatUSBCam can allow slower G3s to work with iChat AV, although you may experience less than smooth video performance. iChatUSBCam is try-before-you-buy software, so you can determine whether it meets your needs before you pay for it. See the web site for FAQs, an explanation of all of iChatUSBCam's features, and camera compatibility if you need iChatUSBCam.

  • Firewire and Camcorders

I have a PPC G-4 and am shopping for my first camcorder. The computer indicates a "FireWire Bus: Maximum Speed: Up to 400 Mb/sec". Does that mean that I am already set up for a camcorder or does that mean that I must install a FireWire adapter card to make it FireWire/IEEE 1394 compatible?
    Silver G-4 Desktop   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

you might posting in another thread in the PowerMac G4 forums as "Firewire and Camcorders" is not normally discused in this thread for "DVDs and CDs on your PowerMac G4 (MDD) and (FW800)"
by Silver G4 do you have a MDD or QS model? both have built in ports for Firewire.
you should have no problem using a firewire cable from your DVcam to your Mac.
most DV cams will work. If you get a Sony, they often refer to Firewire as iLink (IEEE 1394 is the tech spec for Firewire).
iMovie will likely be the only app you will need to link to your DV cam and you can import every clip into it for direct manipulation.

  • IMovie and Sony camera can connect, but nothing imports

My iMovie and Sony HD camera can connect fine...I can control my camera from imovie, but when i click import, it plays (plays on camera and timer on imovie starts) but the screen remains blue and no video is actually imported.

Did you try Sue's excellent suggestion of the Garage band trick anyway?
Also, try deleting iMovie's preference file...the plist found in YourUserName->Library->preferences->com.apple.iMovieplist. Close iMovie, trash the plist. iMovie will create another one when you launch iMovie again.
Do you have the camcorder plugged directly into your computer's Firewire port? Some camcorders don't work properly if they are connected into another device. And, just to be sure, you do have the camcorder set to VTR, right?

  • I just finished creating a movie in IMovie and now want to burn it to a DVD and make it loop.  Since I just purchased this IMac it no longer comes with IDVD.  My question is how to burn and loop a dvd without IDVD.  Thanks for any help.

I just finished creating a movie using IMovie and want to burn it to a DVD and loop it.  Since I just purchased this mac it looks like they no longer include IDVD.  Is there something out there to help me do this.  I am new to MAC and any help would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks

There is free open source software called Burn that will burn DVDs. Here is a link.
If you wish to pay for software, there are many, including TOAST TITANIUM from Roxio. Apple's retail copy of iLife 11, and Apple's Compressor.
Of these, I would say that iDVD is known for being able to create very professional looking DVDs with intros, menus, lots of interesting templates.
Toast is much simpler and the menus and templates are more plain.
Compressor is a professional tool that does a lot more than make DVDs. Don't expect much in the way of menus or templates.
Burn, I have never tried, since I have iDVD and Toast for those ocasions when I need to burn a DVD. However, since it is free, I think it is worth a try.
Each software package is a little different, but in general, in iMovie, you can use the SHARE menu to SHARE/MOVIE in Large size. Save the movie to your desktop or someplace you can easily find it. Then drag it into the tool of your choice. You can alsouse SHARE/MEDIA BROWSER/LARGE if you have iDVD or Toast.

  • I have a new macbook pro and just made a video on imovie and it asked me to put it on idvd but there is no idvd listed as an option. How can I get idvd?

Since Apple has stopped supporting and offering iDVD you'll need to purchase the iLIfe 11 disk from a 3rd party retailer like Amazon.com: iLife 11 which will include iDVD 7.

  • I am trying to Show Package contents of iMovie and it freezes at the hr.lprog folder

While doing a virus scan my machine would freeze on the file
    Applications/iMovie/Contents/Resource/hr.lprog/Title-SidewaysDrifting.nib/keyedo bjects.nib.
Bitdefender said to send them the file.
I am able to "Show package contents" of iMovie, and open the Contents and Resources folder. When I try to open the hr.lprog folder, I get the spinning beach vball of death and I have to reboot my machine using the power button.
Does anyone have an idea what might be causing this and how to fix it?
Is the hr.lprog folder just the language files for Croatia? If so, can I safely delete them, or is there more to it?

My guess would be that your hard drive has become corrupt, and the corruption is affecting something about that folder or its contents such that when the Finder tries to display them, it crashes. I would recommend immediatelyrepairing with Disk Utility. Also, if you don't have any backups, now would be a good time to start, before something bad happens.
If repairing the hard drive doesn't work, I would try deleting and reinstalling iMovie.
Also, note that I don't recommend BitDefender. Read my Mac Malware Guide, and if after reading that you want to have anti-virus software, use one of the programs it recommends. BitDefender has performed poorly in my anti-virus software testing, both in the first round and the second round of testing.

  • I exited iMovie and lost my project.  I am able to find it in Finder, under the Movies tab, but can not get it back to a project in iMovie.  Is there a way to restore it?

Please help!  I exited iMovie and lost my project that I've been working on for days... I am able to find it in "Finder" under iMovie Projects... but I am unable to open it as a Project in iMovie.  I am using iMovie '11, with no time machine, and I'm on a MacBook Pro.

I fully sympathise with you, as I recently experienced the same issue (as have many others).
Projects always appear as normal in Finder in the Home folder Movies/iMovie Projects (or on an external disk at the top level in Movies/iMovie Projects). Nothing looks untoward there.
However, when iMovie is opened again after an editing session, the most recent project worked on does not appear in the listing of projects in iMovie's Project Library - although it is still listed in the Finder folder . This happens for no apparent reason - no unexpected quits, freezes, or crashes, and nothing else out of the ordinary. iMovie is simply not recognizing the project. It can't even be opened by double-clicking on the project in Finder.
Here are a number of links to other topics on this issue (there may be others I've missed):

Sorry to bombard you with all these links, but as you will see there are others here reporting the same problem. No solution has been forthcoming unfortunately.
Be sure to provide feedback to Apple - in iMovie's menu click on iMovie > Provide iMovie Feedback, then complete the online form.

  • Updated to iLife '08 and now iMovie and iDVD won't Start

I received a copy of iLife '08 for Christmas and finally got around to upgrading today. The new iPhoto works just fine but when I try to start iMovie, it crashes (I have included part of the Problem Report below). I have tried restarting and it doesn't help. Then I tried to start iDVD and it flashes the "Welcome" / "Open" screen and then quits before I can do anything -- no error report. Any ideas on how to:
    1) Fix both programs so they will launch -OR-
    2) Restore the old versions of iMovie and iDVD

  • I can't update iPhoto, GarageBand nor iMovie, and I can't open iPhoto at all.

I can't update iPhoto, GarageBand nor iMovie, and iPhoto is the only one I can't open at all. I bought my Macbook half a year ago and when I try to update the Apps it says it's being modified and then that there was an error with Apple Store ):

There is an issue with update servers today, so you'll have to wait anyway.

Im just guessing but it seems like you would have to get your movie into the correct folder on a computer then use iTunes to sync it to your iPad. If you've synced to a computer and have movies then on your computer should be a folder with the movie in it. You could export your iMovie to something like Dropbox then download from Dropbox to the folder you think it needs to be in the sync your iPad again. Again this is just a guess. Others may have a better answer.
