Imovie and exporting to media browser

After reviewing many posts am I correct in these statements?
1. From iMovie11 you should not export to iDVD, but rather media browser, to burn a movie to DVD because the quality will be better.
2. When exporting to Media Browser it is pointless to go higher than "LARGE" becasue a standard DVD does not go higher that the "large" resolution.
Question: is it better to Export higher than large if you are watching on computer or connecting to TV to watch?

Out of Range Error
As I only got
• miniDV tape Cameras - interlaced SD-Video
• and a small still Camera with sort of movie function 30fps 720p I think
and as far as I know - iMovie HD6 is not so keen on Progressive material (Hopefully I'm totally wrong in this)
So I set it to do DV
One more reason is that
• DVD is as Standard = Interlaced SD-Video
• iDVD does the down scaling of HD-material badly
So I keep the line from Camera to DVD as intact as possibly (goes for the Sound too - Never .mp3 or other alient formats - I only use .aiff 16-bit 48kHz or .aiff 16-bit 44.1kHz (from Audio-CDs) and from iTunes I go via Export out to a standard Audio-CD (.aiff) and use the files on this)
By doing so - I've very few problems in my DVD makings.

  • IMovie Quits when I try to export to media browser

Repeated attempts to export a movie from iMovie results in the application quitting. I have consolidated all media and have attempted exports to Media Browser (failed), plain Export (failed), to iDVD (failed) and using Quicktime (succeeded)--but cannot use this in iDVD.
    What to do next?

What do you mean by "trashing iMovie pref files"?  What are pref files?
    • Delete iMovie pref. file
    iMovie pref. file resides.
    Mac Hard Disk (start-up HD)/Users/"Your account"/Library/Preferences
and is named. (one or more of these)
    com.apple.iMovie.plist
    com.apple.iMovie3.plist
    com.apple.iMovie7.plist
    com.apple.iMovie8.plist
    com.apple.iMovie9.plist
    and find
    com.apple.iApps.plist
While iMovie is NOT RUNNING - move this/these file/s out on to desk-top.
    Now restart iMovie.
AFTER - Panic halts - or Force HALT - when Mac hangs and needs to be Stopped and re-Started
    • When having to do this - it also introduces small errors on hard disk that can add up to major problems.
That Why one has to run
    • Repair Permissions - Disk Util too
    • Repair Hard disk - Disk Util tool (but to do this You must start from DVD or external hard disk - can't do brain surgery on one self)

  • Exporting to Media Browser & Chapters etc

    Hi People,
I just finished editing my wedding video in iMovie 08 and everything looks great. I need to add chapters so that my relatives can skip to different locations in the movie. I read that the only way to add chapters is to add it to the media browser and then send it into garage band.....create the chapters there and then export it to iDVD. I tried this with a short test movie with only about 2 minutes of footage and it works fine. When I try to add my wedding video to the media browser it starts off and says it will take about 350 minutes to export...it exports for a few hours and then fails with an error (I think the error code might have been -43 but cant remember..and refers to startup disk, I think being too full..)
My wedding video is huge.. being 3 hours the raw files were about 50 or 60 gig. I have done all of my editing from an external drive that has about 70 gig free and ideally this is where I would want to export the finished movie to. I do not have more than about 6gb left on my MacBook Pro...
1: Is there a way to make chapters without using media browser?
2: If media browser is the only option for chapters how can I get media browser to use the external drive when it is exporting.
    Thanks - Justin

1: Is there a way to make chapters without using media browser?
Yes. Garageband should be able to chapter any QT compatible video you can bring into it whether brought in via the Media Browser, the Finder, or "drag 'n dropped" from the desktop. Further, the Media Browser employs H.264/AAC compression as the export default, so while the files are small, it can take hours to compress very long files. You could, for instance, export your project to your hard drive via the "Using QT" export option to a less compressed format such as DV or AIC to your 70 GBs space with an AIC/Linear PCM probably requiring 30 plus GBs or a DV taking closer to 40 and I would normally expect this export to be quicker than H.264/AAC. However, if you still prefer the H.264/AAC built-in preset, use the "Export Movie..." option to select the same size file using the same Media Browser settings, but place the file on your external drive where you want it.
2: If media browser is the only option for chapters how can I get media browser to use the external drive when it is exporting.
Media Browser files are stored in a folder within a project's "package." Since these files are stored on the start-up drive by default and there is no user preference to relocate them, I would not normally recommend the average user attempt to set up the console workaround described elsewhere in this forum when so many other easier solutions are open to you in this case.
ADDITION NOTES: Don't know if you are burning to dual-layer device or not. (I.e., iDVD will not write a single-layer 3-hour DVD.) If not, you will need to consider burning you DVD content in two parts or using an alternate allowing longer burns and use of AC3 audio rather than iDVD's PCM.

i just made a movie in iMovie and exported in MP4 format, now it won't open, error message says quicktime can't open the file ***? Anyone?

I have the same problem. I'm using Mavericks OS and latest iMovie. Both downloaded last week. I save the movie into File (as directed) and  QuickTime

  • Performance on a MacBook Pro v Mac Pro - export to Media Browser

Right now I am using a Macbook Pro (an older Core Duo 2.16 w/2GB) -
I am wondering with one of the new Mac Pros (8-core), do I gain an advantage during tasks like exporting my movies (say 300MB+ in size) to the Media Browser? And how much of the advantage, if any, comes from greater RAM?
And also the subsequent export from Garage Band (after I have added chapters) and export the movie to disk?
Just wondering if these are types of tasks that will benefit greatly from a newer machine and my times will be reduced. I'm doing a lot of waiting now...
    Thanks-

My GPU is the X1900, not sure how that fits in with the current MP options, it's likely been surpassed by now, I've had my MP for quite a while now. I tend to only take any interest in GPU's when it's time to buy a new mac.
I don't know about you but importing is the bit that I seem to end up getting impatient about, when it comes to exporting I tend to take the approach that my work is done and I usually go and do something else.
Of course importing DV is realtime whichever mac you have, importing AVCHD takes about 1/2 real time on my MP, I can't say I've ever imported AVCHD on my MBP.
Of course any rendering imovie needs to do is largely on the fly and doesn't get noticed on my MP, rendering in final cut is pretty quick, I've never actually timed it, it doesn't take long enough to start worrying about. Sometimes I get an opportunity to clean my glasses during a render, not very technical but hopefully gives you an idea of the sort of times we are talking about.
I'm unable to export 1080i video from my MBP (and it actually be 1080i), I can do this with my MP.
In summary. I don't use my MBP for editing, I've done a few tests and things on it but that's about it. I don't think I would have the patience to edit video on it knowing that my MP is there. I guess this about sums up the difference between the two macs in a nutshell.

  • Error=-50 when I try to Share my iMovie '08 project to Media Browser

I just upgraded to iLife '08. I have a simple 4 minute video that I want to Share to Media Browser so I can burn a DVD in iDVD. When I preview play it in iMovie, it is fine. When I try to Share it to Media Browser (in medium or large size), I get an error message:
The movie file "clip-2008-11-21 18; 37; 22 1 cannot be found. Without this file, the movie cannot play properly."
What am I doing wrong? Please, can someone help me??! Thanks.

Welcome to the  Discussion Forums
clip-2008-11-21 18; 37; 22 1 is not conventional nomenclature for imported clips, it seems as though this clip may have been imported twice and one of the copies deleted after it has been used in the project. Have you looked in the events folder for such a clip.

  • I created a slide show on work computer. Placed photos and movies in Media Browser. Want to use another computer (laptop) to give presentation. Do I need to copy media browser to laptop or are pictures and movies embedded in slide show and can go anywhere

I created a slide show on my work computer and placed many photos and movies in my work computer's Media Browser. Want to use another computer (laptop) to give the presentation and therefore change location of slide show. Do I need to copy the media browser to the laptop or once the pictures and movies are embedded in the original slide show, can I take it anywhere and not worry about the media browser?
I also want to optimize a movie for Keynote, so it's not too large a file. Please help.

Graphic, sound and video files are copied into the Keynote file, but make sure Keynote > Preferences - include sound and movies check box is ticked.
If you have added additional fonts they will need be changed to reflect what is on the destination machine.
If the other machine has a different Keynote version, ensure the same transitions and effects are available.

  • Photobooth and the iApps Media Browser

    Good morning.
Some students at our school find that the Media Browser will not display thumbnails of their Photobooth images. This happens in all the 'iApps' that use the Media Browser.
I can't see any differences between the configurations of directories and preferences for students who can use the Media Browser successfully and those who can't. We would appreciate any help.

  • Problem with Fotomagico and new iLife Media Browser

I installed the new iLife Media Browser as part the Apple software Update several days ago. I use Fotomagico, which uses the media browser. After installing the new browser, Fotomagico no longer sees photos- it can browse the directories in iPhoto but can't see the actual photos (blank boxes appear with file names) and I can't select them.
Is there some way to uninstall the new browser? On my wife's Mac, I did not install it after seeing what happened on mine, and Fotomagico still works fine there.
Help! I'm in the middle of a project with a deadline! I've contacted Boinx Software also but they are taking their time.

Do you use Time Machine? Apart from wiping the HD and starting over there’s no other way to go back.
    But try repair permissions first.
    BTW
it can browse the directories in iPhoto
What version of iPhoto are you using?

  • How do I preserve and export my Safari browsing history?

I need to keep track of how many times I visit a particular web site.  Ideally, I would like to be able to preserve my browsing history in Safari for an extended period of time (several months), and then export the history data (site visited, date visited) to spreadsheet, txt file, or something comparable.  Is this even possible?

    Hello,
Thank you. I found that option you pointed out. I can now change it from 1080i to 1080p and I can chance the resolution. However I still can't change the frame rate. It still stays at 29.97.
Could this be due to the camera? I am using a Canon VIXIA HF S100 with 30p and 24p frame rate options. I suspect that it does not really shoot at true 24p and only does 24p within 60i.
Frankly, I don't really care about getting 24p support too much but it would be very nice to have the option.
I'll keep toying with the program. Still, anymore ideas or thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you Wild Giles.

  • I made a video on iMovie and exported it but, I need to change some things and it is not in iMovie anymore. How do I get it back for editing?

Guys I really could use some help

You may be experiencing the "disappearing project" issue. Projects can be seen in the Finder in their default location (as described by AppleMan1958), but do not appear in the listing of projects in iMovie's Project Library. See this thread for more information, and also the links therein to other threads regarding this issue:
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/21436422#21436422
Unfortunately, I'm not aware of a resolution to this problem. Hopefully, it's not what you are seeing!

  • How do I send only the sound track from iMovie to Media browser?

I need some wild sound for an iMovie 09 project I'm working on in Garageband (working on the soundtrack). I want to take some wild sound from a clip in iMovie and export it to the media browser so that I can use it in the project in Garageband. I detached the audio on the clip in iMovie and tried deleting the video, but it deletes the detached sound as well.
Any tips, tricks, or solutions on sending just the sound from iMovie to the media browser would be much appreicated.
    thanks

With the project open, from iMovie's menu select "Share > Export using QuickTime". For the Export option select "Sound to AIFF". Give it a name and select your Save location. As far as I know, you can't save to the Media Browser as this is contained in the project's package contents folder. So save it to a convenient location (such as your Desktop) and navigate to this from GarageBand. It's probably best if you firstly move the file to, say, your Music folder or iTunes before using it in GarageBand. Otherwise, the links may be lost if you later move it from the Desktop (whereas you are less likely to move it from Music or iTunes).

  • Force iMovie's media browser to refresh albums in iPhotos without restart of iMovie

Is there a way, while in iMovie, to force the media browser to refresh without restarting iMovie?
Often I will add an image to the album in iPhoto and command tab back to iMovie to use it. Yet, it is not there unless I close out of the app. Is there a way to refresh the media browser?

iMovie can take a age to load once you have filled it up with a load of video hence why a refresh feature would be great.
Im regularily importing music into itunes mid edit and having to shut down and restart iMovie which is frustrating as you loose where you are and can sometimes boil a kettle whilst waiting for it.
I havent investigated a direct import into iMovie yet which might be easier.

  • Hang ups and jerkiness in iMovie HD export to mini dv camera

I have a big problem-- while I am trying to export a TV show created in *_iMovie HD 6.0.3 (267.2)*_ to my *Sony DCR TRV-900*, which I have done many times.
Suddenly, there is jerkiness upon export to my camera. My iMoive video which plays back normally on the coputer looks jerky and almost slo mo while going to camera, and is also like than when the mini dv is played back. However the audio quality seems to be ok on the mini dv.
FYI, this show is made up of a series of Full Quality Quicktime chunks (ie individual scenes that I made and exported thru iMovie as Full Quality QuickTime, and then re-imported as individual Quicktime video chunks so not to tax the exporting capacity of iMovie too much).
The show is about 26 minutes, and the size of the iMovie file is about 26 gigs. The file resides on a Maxtor external drive with firewire 400.
I have plugged and replugged, turned camera on and off, and changed mini dv tapes a couple of times...
Does anybody out there know what is up with this jerky outputting problem?
    Thanks
    Michael in LA

Not sure why you should have this problem now, but you can export the entire movie as a new Full Quality Quicktime, and then reimport that into a new iMovie and export that new iMovie to your camcorder.
Just be sure you have enough free space on your hard drive where your iMovie is located.
.....that MIGHT be the problem with the jerking......how much free space do you have?

  • Aperture Referenced Images and IWeb Media browser

I'm new to Aperture, sorry if this is a stupid question, and have a Windows server full of photos which I am referencing into Aperture (rather than copying everything over)...
When I switch to IWeb and use the media browser, it seems that only files which are in the Aperture library , NOT Referenced files, show up. None of the referenced files show.
My expectation is that the Media Browser would also show the referenced photos, just as Aperture does, and then would copy the ones I choose into my IWeb project....It seems this is not the case.
Am I doing something wrong? Is this expected behavior?
Is there a better way to do this?
    Thank you!!
Macbook Pro Mac OS X (10.4.9) Aperture 1.5.3
      Windows XP Pro

    Welcome.
Note the media browser only shows files that have previews. So you need to generate previews (which are JPEGs) for your master files. You have numerous options as to size and quality of the generated previews, but this is something you need to do for this to work.
The previews will be stored in the library itself. The masters for which the previews are generated can be either managed (i.e. in the library) or referenced (outside the library).
