IMovie and Firelight drives

I am wanting to do some home video stuff using iMovie 4 and possibly final cut pro 3.0 on a PB 17" / 1.5 ghz / 10.3.9 / 1gb ram.
I need an external drive to store the video data and am wondering if the Firelight drive is suitable for use in video editing.
Thanks in advance for any replies

It's good that you're looking ahead and considering an external drive, as video editing takes alot of disk space, both for editing and storage.
You can use an external hard drive with a firewire connection, which is preferred over a USB-only connection. If you want to maximize the speed, you'll use an external drive which supports the faster FireWire 800 (IEEE 1394b) port your system has.
You might consider building your own. Sounds daunting, but it's really very easy. The benefit is that you can use a hard drive with a 3 or 5 year warranty, unlike most complete units that only have a 1 year warranty.
It's really as easy as this: Buy the drive you want (I'm currently using a 3.5" Western Digital 320gb drive). Generally I've found the Western Digital drives run cooler than others. Buy the case you want (the oxford chip set works well in my case), take the cover off the case, insert the wide plug from the electronics in the case to the hard drive, insert the power plug in the case to the hard drive, attach 4 screws to hold the hard drive in the case, reinstall the cover, done!
In the US, Newegg at http://www.newegg.com and OWC at http://www.macsales.com both have good selections of hard drives and cases.

  • Imovie and combo drive woes

    Hi all,
I recently made a presentation with imovie and would like to be able to copy it to a cd in order to delete it of my hard drive (as it takes up a lot of space) and be able to view it with a dvd player.
Ok, so, my questions are these: Is there anyway to compress it to make it fit on a cd? Currently, its to big to burn to one. Is there anyway to format it to be able to view in a dvd player since the G4 I have only comes with a combo drive?
    THANKS FOR ANY HELP
    God Bless
    iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Mireth Technology makes a program called iVCD that will let you create a Video CD of your project.
    http://mireth.com/pub/ivme.html
VCDs can be played in any DVD player that will accept a CD-R or CD-RW disk. Note, however, that VCDs are not as high quality as DVDs and can usually only hold about 60 minutes of video.

  • IMovie and iCloud drive

    hello all,
i'm using a 32gb iPad Air and iMovie. Both are up to date. I also have iCloud drive.
My issue is this... When in iMovie I tap iCloud Drive to import video from my iCloud drive the folder opens and I see all my files but without thumbnail images. I tap on the file but nothing happens.
Is there something I'm doing wrong?
    thanks.

hi there, the solution to your problem is, i guess, to think that your videos have been moved from iCloud to iCloud Drive, as soon as you updated your iPhone to iCloud Drive. Because of this,  your videos are temporarily not accessible from your computer, neither from your Apple TV.
What kind of computer do you have? I assume you have a Mac.
You can get access to your videos again from your Mac by updating the operating system to OSX Yosemite, which was just released yesterday.
I have an Apple TV too, and I have no access to iMovie theatre, it says "there is a problem with iCloud or with your internet connection", but i think very soon there will be an update for the Apple TV enabling the user to see the videos in iMovie Theatre again, or, they change something on the server side, with the effect of enabling the Apple TV to see the iMovie Theatre videos again.
I already updated to OSX Yosemite on my Mac, and indeed, there are the videos again in iMovie, on the Theatre tab.
There are time gaps between the release of iCloud drive, and the release of the new iOS for iPhone, followed by the release of OSX Yosemite for Mac. These time gaps cause the problem. The world wide service of IMovie Theatre is temporarily interrupted until all devices that have access to this service have been updated. Not the ideal way to deal with customers, but ok, it leads to nice results in the end.
iPhone 4S with iOS8.0.2, Mac with OSX Yosemite (updated yesterday)

  • Imove and external drive

Hello, i bought external hard disc to make space on my Imac's hard disc (it became too slow),so I want to move about 200gb of pictures, movies, music on external hd. Could I work with this movies, events, pictures...etc through the app's iMovie,iPhoto and similar, like before? I want the events and projects to stay exact like on Imac. My idea is to move data from hd of my Imac to external disc(because of space and speed of my Imac and to save my precious data- my 1. copy of it) then with time capsula throug the time machine make constantlly back up of my external disc, is it possible, or somebody know better solution?Tnx

    Hi
In regard to iMovie'08 to 11 there are TWO Extremely Important things to follow.
    • External Hard disk MUST BE - Mac OS Extended (hfs) formatted to be able to handle video ! !
UNIX/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange - will work for most other things - BUT NOT FOR VIDEO !
    • Moving iMovie Events and Projects:
NEVER - move or alter any folders named iMovie Events or iMovie Projects - by doing this on DeskTop/Finder iMovie connections breaks and can be from Hard to impossibly to repair.
All moving's of Events and Projects - must be done Within the iMovie Application - Here it's safe and connections will be kept.
(I prefer a FireWire hard disk as USB/USB2 performs badly to me)

  • IMovie and hard drives shared by airport extreme?

Am I doing something wrong? Both my hard drives shared out by my airport have a warning symbol on them and they are not available to use for importing from my camcorder. Should the drives be formatted a certain way, or is there some setting or something in the airport I need to use?
    Thanks in advance...
    Corey

    Hi
I do not know - BUT I can guess
    • AirPort - to slow to work - any set-up
    • external hard disks - YES they MUST be formatted in a certain way
MUST be - Mac OS Extended formatted - to work with video !
(UNIX/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange - Will NOT WORK)
    • connection speed
    a. e-Sata (internally in eg a Mac Pro) - best to my knowledge
    b. FireWire 800 - 400 - best choise for external hard disks
    c. /USB2 - performs badly
    d. Net-works eg AirPort - to slow to be able to be used for SD-video and far far from HD-video.

  • How do I use TC as a network drive to trans/store iMovie and iTunes files?

Can someone please walk me thru how I would have my music and iMovie files stored--not backed up, I got that under control--on my TC? My MacBookPro has less than 200MB of room and I want to be able to use the TC as a network drive (if I'm saying that correctly).
So I already have iMovie and iTunes saving files on my MacBook. I want to move those files/directories to the TC and, going forward, be able to have my MacBook save/store new iMovie and iTunes files on the TC. That is the main reason I bought this thing but I can't make it work.
I have looked high and low for this answer before bugging you guys for help but I just can't figure it out. I was able to save a few iMovie files to the TC, but when I try to access them in iMovie, I see the thumbnails but I get a little yellow triangle on each clip and it won't play it.
    Thanks in advance.
    Ed

once i click on the TC in the finder, it shows one other folder "data" (by default). this appears on my desktop as a drive. do i just start moving files anywhere onto this drive, and TM automatically can read the difference between my manual files and it's backup, or is there specific i need to save the files?

  • Is iPhoto and iMovie and garage band on Lion reinstall thumb drive from Apple??

Is iphoto and imovie and garage Band On the Os x Lion reinstall thumb Drive Sold By Apple???

No.  iLife is a separate product that is bundled with the purchase of a new Mac, not the purchase of a new OS.
So, anyone with an older Mac would have pay for an upgrade to iLife in addition to paying for an upgrade to Lion.
On a positive note, you can now upgrade separate components in the App Store (i.e. iPhoto), instead of paying for the complete iLife suite

  • How do I Retrieve imovie projects from and external drive back into my mac internal drive

How do I Retrieve imovie projects from and external drive back into my mac internal drive?
    Thank You

Every working drive, Internal or External, should produce an Icon on your Desktop. If you cannot see those, click on the Desktop (to get Finder) and choose Preferences off the Finder Menu. The general pane has checkboxes for "Show these items on the Desktop:"
Double click the Icon for your External Drive to open it. Open the folders on it until you find the Items you want to copy. Drag them to the Icon of your Internal Drive, or open the folder where you want them to land and drop them in there.
A drive that does not appear on the desktop after you have asked it to may be damaged. But it would be smart to do a Restart to see if it is recognized again at next Startup.

  • I'm a beginner with iMovie and my hard drive is filling up fast. How do I move the event files from the hard drive to my time capsule?

I'm a beginner with iMovie and my hard drive is filling up fast. How do I move the event files from the hard drive to my time capsule?

you should never (ab)use a designated backup-setup for 'ordinairy' storage tasks.
plus, the wireless connection to TC is too slow for iMovie.
    purchase any ext. usb-harddrive, 500Gigs starting at 50$ ...

  • IMovie and an external hard drive

I recently bought an external hard drive to help with the stirage problems involved with iMovies. I successfully copied the imovies to that drive. However, when I try to run the movies, everything starts but only gors for a second or two and quits. The beach ball appears and eventually moves the movie to the next clip. This continues as long as I let it. Obviously, I don't know anything about using the backup drive. Is there a simple or involved answer to my problem?

All may not be lost. It's possible that you've got an external USB enclosure holding a drive with an IDE interface. If this is the case, you can easily buy an external firewire box (over here, these cost about £25) and remount the drive inside that.
I've got a combo enclosure - USB2 and Firewire. When used with my Mac mini (FW400) the firewire is nearly twice as fast. Perhaps I should be saying the USB interface is twice as slow - since it is a very poor USB implementation (not designed for use for HDDs) on Macs.

  • Rendering {iMovie to iDVD} and hard drives: use 1 or 2?

I have two LaCie FW drives.
To go from iMovie to iDVD, is it faster to have the Movie on one drive and the resulting DVD file on the other?
    TIA
    -wbajr

The iDVD encoding process is not really limited very much by hard drive read/writes - I doubt there will be a noticeable difference either way.
But iDVD will need lots of swap space on your startup drive, regardless of where the iMovie and iDVD project files are saved.

  • I am trying to Show Package contents of iMovie and it freezes at the hr.lprog folder

While doing a virus scan my machine would freeze on the file
    Applications/iMovie/Contents/Resource/hr.lprog/Title-SidewaysDrifting.nib/keyedo bjects.nib.
Bitdefender said to send them the file.
I am able to "Show package contents" of iMovie, and open the Contents and Resources folder. When I try to open the hr.lprog folder, I get the spinning beach vball of death and I have to reboot my machine using the power button.
Does anyone have an idea what might be causing this and how to fix it?
Is the hr.lprog folder just the language files for Croatia? If so, can I safely delete them, or is there more to it?

My guess would be that your hard drive has become corrupt, and the corruption is affecting something about that folder or its contents such that when the Finder tries to display them, it crashes. I would recommend immediatelyrepairing with Disk Utility. Also, if you don't have any backups, now would be a good time to start, before something bad happens.
If repairing the hard drive doesn't work, I would try deleting and reinstalling iMovie.
Also, note that I don't recommend BitDefender. Read my Mac Malware Guide, and if after reading that you want to have anti-virus software, use one of the programs it recommends. BitDefender has performed poorly in my anti-virus software testing, both in the first round and the second round of testing.

  • Time Machine, Mozy and external drives? Somehow I lost 300GB of data! :(

    Hello:
I have 2 external 500 GB hard drives. One a USB drive used for Time Machine, the other a firewire 800 drive I use for HD video/iMovie files and editing. I also have Mozy (online backup service) installed and running in the background. Not sure what updates I have been running, but about 2 weeks ago I would start getting the spinning color wheel or "spinning beach ball of death" where the mouse pointer/curser would not return. All I could do to recover was hold the iMac power button dow to issue a hard reset. After several occurrences of this event I started yanking my peripheral devices and it seemed to be caused by one if not both external hard drives. 'Cause when I unhooked them, the busy curser went away. Anyway, after this happened for a few days then my external hard drives started randomly un-mounting. Eventually the firewire drive would never remount. WelI, I yank the drive out of the case it was in and put it in another case thinking maybe the external case has gone bad... the strange thing, I could still see the drive in "System Profiler" but it would never mount, even did a PRAM reset. Anyway, I got it in another case, USB only, and it showed up in "Disk Utility" but when I checked it, is said the file structure was bad and couldn't be repaired. So I had to reformat it. Now I'm trying to download 300GB from Mozy because the DVD option from them (Mozy) will cost over $200 (this is what they are charging for the DVD retrieval option)... BTW, the free download retrieval option keeps bombing out on me too, so now I'm not sure I will ever get my files back. Oh well... does anyone have a clue what may have happened here so I don't get in this predicament again... we can start with me not screwing things up but beyond that? Oh, I did hot plug the USB and firewire drives and got warnings about un-mounting first, but with a spinning color wheel I could not do anything like that. Sorry this is partially a vent post. This makes me disappointed in Apple and/or Mozy. This was my first Apple computer purchase and had hoped for something more robust. I can get this same treatment with a PC... at least with a PC I am a little better prepare, I expect this to happen. Anyway I'm done, for now.

    mn3:
I'm sorry to hear about all your troubles!
In the future, if you have an issue that occurs twice or more in a short period of time, you need to start looking at what's going wrong so you can keep things safe.
With regard to those external drives:
You may want to invest in the application Disk Warrior; it can repair many errors that Disk Utility isn't able to touch.
Odds are what happened is you thoroughly corrupted the directories on the drives by yanking the USB cords instead of ejecting them properly. If the directory is corrupted, it's no easy task to get the data saved!
A few questions about the drives:
    1) What are the brand names?
    2) Have you used these drives with other machines in the past?
    3) Do the drives have their own power supplies?
    4) Were they connected directly to the iMac?
    Some questions about your computer:
    1) Have any other peripherals caused you troubles?
    2) How large of a hard drive does the computer have & how much space is free?
    3) How old is the iMac?
    4) Do you have the original install discs?
Lots of questions, but the answers should be helpful.

  • Suddenly my event library in iMovie 11 is empty.  I have tried deleting the plist, importing clips from multiple locations (to see if they show up in the library), re-installing iMovie, and re-installing Mountain Lion. Help??

Suddenly my event library in iMovie 11 is empty.  I have tried deleting the plist, importing clips from multiple locations (to see if they show up in the library), re-installing iMovie, and re-installing Mountain Lion.
I was working on a project, when all of a sudden the event library went blank.  There are no devices showing in the left column, only "last import" and "aperture videos".  There are no video clips in the editing window.  I have "Show: All Clips" selected.  I've tried "group events by disk".
When I have a Project open, it plays just fine.  There are no yellow triangles saying "source clip is missing".  Yet, again...nothing is in the event library large editing window.  So, it seems the data is still there, but invisible.  This is true with all the projects, and all the external devices I've experimented by plugging in to see if their video clips show up in the event library.
I have tried to import new movies, and iMovie responds as normal...looking like it's importing, then "generating thumbnails", then it makes the "ding" signalling that the import is complete...but nothing shows in the event library.  I've tried importing movies from the harddrive, from quicktime, and from an external drive.
I have searched the forums, and found many users with a similar, but not the same, problem.  For them, it seems the "go to users-library-preferences and delete iMovie plist" has solved their problem.  This didn't work for me.
I uninstalled/reinstalled iMovie, I even have re-installed Mountain Lion (from a last-ditch effort suggestion from Apple technician).
HERE'S AN INTERESTING DETAIL:  After almost 5 hours on the phone with Apple, I decided to cut my losses and take my project to another Mac I have.  I'm working on a project, for work, that is critical that it's completed by tonight (whoops), and all my video is on an external drive.  So, I plug in the external drive to Mac #2, open iMovie, and everything is looking fine.  I continue importing some files I was converting, through Wondershare, and suddenly (whether or not this has to do with the importing, I'm not sure), the SAME THING happened to Mac #2!!!!  I can't believe this.
Does anyone have any suggestions?  Have you ever heard of this happening?  Could it have to do with the files I'm importing???
I apologize if my language is confusing.  Obviously, I'm not an Apple genius-person!  I hope I've provided all the information you need.
    Mac #1 is a 27" desktop, mid-2012, software up-to-date.  Mac #2 is a 24" desktop, about 4 years old, OSX 10.7.5

    I'm adding more information:
in Finder, my iMovie folders are all visible and accessible.  When I click on a clip from iMovie Events folder, Quicktime opens and plays the clip.  ALL my video is not missing - it just isn't showing up in the Event Library!
This happened all of a sudden, while I was working on iMovie project (on both computers).
All my Projects are intact, and play when I open them.
