IMovie and MacBook

Hi, I've been a Windows user my whole life, although I have used Mac OS a lot at school, and I really like it.
Anyways, I'm looking into buying a laptop for video editing, and am loosely looking at these MacBooks. iMovie says it needs 256 MB of RAM. So how does it run on the 1 GB MacBook? Is it slow at all? Or would I want the 2 GB for good performance. Most of my editing is photos, using the pan and zoom (Ken Burns effect).

the min.specs, Apple recommends, are really minimum...
any Intel Mac should have - imho - have at last 1GB of RAM..
my MacMini has a little more, works like charm..
adding more RAM will not improve performance dramatically...
(iM isn't meant for huge professional projects, "Ben Hur Returns" et al, as a consumer, you are allowed to wait a few seconds to get an effect applied...)
but:
video "eats" harddrive space (1h video=13GB); iM uses the same video-codec as miniDV, to allow a lossless import and processing of such files.. it is NO all-purpose-video edit app...- any other codecs get converted first, before usage in iM... just to mention that.
consider the purchase of a ext., firewire drive; after doing so, launch the Mac's included DiskUtility and format drive to MacOsExtended...
locate projects on your ext. drive... but keep another 10 - 15GB free on your internal drive... esp. when using iDVD....

Since Apple has stopped supporting and offering iDVD you'll need to purchase the iLIfe 11 disk from a 3rd party retailer like Amazon.com: iLife 11 which will include iDVD 7.

Is there anyway to take a downloaded app from one computer and put it on another without rebuying it. I have a macbook that I bought the new iMovie and iPhoto on, but I would rather it be on my iMac. So is there anyway I can change it?

Just redownload it on the other computer by logging into the App Store with the same Apple ID you used to purchase it.

"Open-Box" MacBook. iMovie and iPhoto $14.99 each. Don't want to pay.

So I just bought my MacBook and it was discounted as an "Open Box" which meant that someone had bought the computer and shortly (less than a week) decided that they did not want it. So because the person would have begun setting up the computer and using the computer's serial number to download Apps they would then cost money for peoplel like me who purchase them. This person did not purchase GarageBand because I got it for free, but iMovie and iPhoto both are $14.99. The salesman told me that I could use Apple's Up-To-Date program to get these Apps, however, when I tried to I am only able to get iWork and not iLife. How can I get iMovie and iPhoto without having to pay for them? I also have just updated the computer just incase that was not allowing me to get iMovie and iPhoto but that was not the problem.

Time needed can depend on several things.
• less than 5 GB free space on Start-up (Mac OS) hard disk = Redicolous long times AND a DVD that most probably will not work OK
Medicine - I never go under 25GB free space
• Use of strange file formats into iDVD - can force it to de-code first then re-encode - this can take long long times
I use
Video - StreamingDV as from miniDV tape Cameras - or QuickTime Movies Converted to StreamingDV
Audio - .aiff 16-bit 48 kHz - (no .mp3, .wma etc)
• Use of old Mac - My G4 600MHz took about 24 hour per hour movie. my dG5 - about 2 hours per hour (I use Pro Quality encoding)
• Pro Quality encoding - takes about x2 to process a movie

Macbook Air 2013 able to run Logic, iMovie and Final cut?

Hey, I am planning on buying a Macbook Air 13" 2013-version.
I want to use it to record music with logic pro, edit my own youtube-videos with iMovie and maybe a little with Final Cut.
Do you think thats possible?

I am not able to update iPhoto, iMovie and garageband on my macbook pro. these three apps came installed with ilife suite.

I am unable to update iphoto, imovie, and Garageband on my Macbook Pro. I understand that these apps are part of ilife suite. Purchased Macbook at Best Buy January 2012. All software is updated. I recieve message asking me to sign into account that I purchased these apps from. I am signed in , however I did not purchase these apps they came on Macbook. I also tried deleting Garageband and re-installing it. Now Garageband says accept but Macbook will not accept. Anyone else have this problem and were you able to resolve it.

The fact that they were preinstalled is why they are supposed to appear in the Purchased pane, in a temporary area labeled Purchases, for you to accept. Not doing so soon after you got the Mac has messed this process up.
To get things back on track properly try these steps;
Updating Pre-installed iLife apps -
1 - Log out and quit iTunes and the Mac App Store (MAS)
2 - Go to System Prefs/Users & Groups/~user/Password and enter the Apple ID connected to your iTunes/Mac App Store account. Close Sys Prefs
3 - Delete /Mac HD/Library/Caches/com.apple.appstore/adoption.plist
4 - Reboot your Mac
5 - Open Mac App Store
6 - Go to the Purchased pane and Accept the three iLife apps. Enter iTunes/MAS username/password if prompted.

Yes, you can reinstall those applications - as well as GarageBand by downloading them from the Mac app store. There is no charge.

His advice worked like a charm:
"This camera is a lot of fun and when i connected it to iMovie 09 I, in the first case, had to go to File, Import Movies and navigate to the SD card and choose all the .mov files which then imported seamlessly. Was able to edit and share the movie no problem."

if bandwidth is an issue, because you're hosting on your own servers, consider the free codec xh264, you can install as a free QT-plug-in.. with low or super-low bitrates, it offers a superior quality compared to h264 ...

New MacBook Pro appearing with Iphoto, Imovie and Iweb all 2008 versions

I bought a MacBook Pro in March 2013 (new from best buy) and it's running os x 10.8.4. However, for some reason the Iphoto, Imovie and Iweb are all 2008 versions. I used an external hard drive to transfer from my old macbook to the new macbook. What went wrong? Why wasn't the new version of Iphoto, Imovie and Iweb on my computer?
Should I back up onto my external again and reinstall? I had a lot of trouble transfering the data over in the first place because some security software from my school was messing with the transfer, however once it was deleted everything went smoothly. Thoughts?

You migrated your files from an older computer. If you migrated apps, iLife applications were transferred, so you have an old iLife edition.
The only thing you have to do is to open Finder, choose Applications in the sidebar and delete iLife apps. Then, open the App Store, go to Purchases tab and download iLife applications free of charge. All Macs come with iLife applications free of charge
