IMovie and MD audio synch drift problem

I've got a movie of a basketball game. I recorded voice over commentary on a Minidisc player, imported it into iMovie and synched it with the video. The commentary was synched perfectly, from beginning to end. I split the video clip of the game where the first basket was scored, and I used 'Music Video' titles to keep running stats on the screen, which splits the movie into 10 second (or shorter) clips, but shouldn't have any impact on it's length or alter the position of the video in the timeline (which I locked the audio to anyway when I synched it). Well, once I started doing the titles, the video only stays in synch for the first 10 minutes and then starts to drift. By the end of the 40 minute game it is out of synch by almost 5 seconds. Any ideas?

The audio was synchronized. I used this method because the voice over was recorded long after the original footage had been shot and imported into iMovie for my project. I figured out the problem was that to keep the music video stats onscreen continuously by making numerous 10 second clips, Imovie is consuming at least a frame or two to do so, and over the course of the game that led to the voiceover falling out of synch. I decided instead to just have 1 title briefly appear after each play the subject player makes....few enough title clips, the audio remained synched no problem. Thanks for your suggestions!

  • Audio synch drifting in music video

    Hello-
I just sat down this morning to begin editing a music video shot in DVCPRO HD @ 24fps. The video is performance-based, and, at the shoot, the artists played along to the song from their album (the song was played from a CD and run through a PA) so that all the footage could be synched up to the track in editing.
However, when I lay the audio track down with a take from the shoot, the audio track (imported from their album and converted into AIFF format) gradually loses synch with the video. I've edited several music videos using this same format (the same cameras, even) and have never encountered this problem. The audio settings for the captured video and the audio from the CD match (48khz, 16 bit).
    Any ideas?
    Thanks.

the issue was that the synch track was played from a CD (on an older cd player, which may or may not have contributed to the problem). The track from the cd fell out of synch with the AIFF as the song progressed, I assume due to the fact that the CD is physically spinning, creating a variable on how fast the data can be read from it (even though there was no discernible difference in speed to my ears or to the artists who wrote and recorded the song) . So, I ended up running that same CD player into my computer and importing the track from the player in real time, which synced up perfectly.

  • Audio Synch Drift After Export

I'll try again, since no one answered the last time I asked. No problem with synching video/audio in FCP. However when I export either via compressor or QT movie I get audio drift that worsens as the film continues.
    Video is in SD.
I would appreciate any helpful response. Thanks!

The audio is a remix done by a sound engineer to replace the original audio which had some serious problems.
The audio rate of the original and the remix is 48 Khz. The original was 16 bit, the mix is 24 bit. I'm a little new to this, so I'm not sure what you mean by sequence settings. Thanks.

  • Converting .ppt file to iMovie and adding audio

Is iMovie HD the version that comes with iLife '05?
Is iMovie 6 the version that comes with iLife '06?
Is it possible to import slides into iMovie HD from a PowerPoint file?
If so, is it possible to preserve interactive features, such as text that moves across screen, etc.?
Is it possible to then import sound and sync this to the slide presentation?
If so, what file formats are compatible for importing into iMovie?
Are these features improved in any way in iMovie 6?
    Powermac G4 Digital/Audio 466 mHz   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

In iLife 05 it was the first version ofiMovie with HD capabilities. Now the version is iMovie HD 6.
You can not import a .ppt file, but you can save that file in PowerPoint as QuickTime movie, which can be imported in iMovie (yes, with all things you designed in the .ppt).
You can import any audio that works in QuickTime, including mp3 and AIFF. And for sure you can then sync with the video.
iMovie 6 is better than previous.

  • Audio slowly drifts out of sync with video

I have a long continuous video clip (.MP4) that has an audio sample rate of 48 kHz. Separately, I have an audio clip (.mp3) for that take that was recorded at 44.1 kHz.
I created a sequence in Premiere with the .MP4 making sure the sequence's audio sample rate was set to 48. I brought the .mp3 into Audition where I used Edit > Convert Sample Type to change it to 48 kHz.
Back in Premiere, I dragged the converted .mp3 into the sequence and the audio still drifted out of sync toward the end of the clip.
Am I missing a step? How can I make sure the audio and video are in sync throughout rather than just in the beginning?

Two independent record devices will not stay perfectly synchronous over a long period of time unless locked via timecode or a sync cable.
A solution is to scroll to the end of the clips and adjust the speed of the mp3 file (making it run slightly faster or slower) until the end of the camera audio and mp3 audio coincide.

  • IPad mini audio synch

all of my 'sounds' i.e. alerts, alarms and audio (even the on/off click) are all out of synch. The audio is about 3-6 seconds behind the function. And while it's not particularly annoying for alarms, alerts and such - it's annoying as heck when you're watching a video and the audio doesn't match up with the mouth movement. Any suggestions? I checked my other 2 iPads and the audio synch on point.
    Thanks

You can make a Genius Bar appointment at your nearest Apple Store and do an out-of-warranty replacement (will be about 50% of the cost of a new model).
You can go to a 3rd party repair site in your area and have them replace the jack (this route will preclude you from ever using the first option I posted).
You can use an online 3rd party repair service such as http://www.iresq.com or Google for similar sites (this route will preclude you from ever using the first option I posted).
You can purchase the part and do it yourself. At http://www.ifixit.com they have videos showing how to do this and they sell 3rd party and salvaged parts (this route will preclude you from ever using the first option I posted).

I used Roxio VHS to DVD for Mac (have iMac with Snow Leopard) and the audio does not synch with the video when playing in iMovie.  Any suggestions to fix?

Thanks for the reply.  I tried playing with detaching the audio in iMovie, but with 20+ hours of video to correct, it would take too long.  After 28 hours, Corel/Roxio tech support replied that it is a known bitrate mismatch problem and they have no real fix.  I strongly suggest not to buy this product.

  • Audio Synch Problem Exporting From imovie 6

I have a created a large imovie project in imovie 6 using pictures and imported video.  The project uses a lot of extracted audio voice overs on top of the photos.
While trying to export the video to quicktime or idvd, the audio gets out of synch at various points.  I have tried exporting it many times using a variety of different options, and the audio remains out of synch, sometimes in different places with each export.  Lastly, I have extracted the audio from the video clips for some of the more problematic portions of the project, but that has not proven successful.
The odd thing is that the movie plays perfectly while in imovie.
Any suggestions as to how to correct this issue?

    Hi
    Tedious situation.
To avoid this I'm kind of strict in Audio in two ways
    A
    • Material used if video is in same frame per minute - else I use JES_Deinterlacer to convert all to one standard. I use PAL = 25fps - one of my Cameras records ONLY in 30fps - (some people records in 24fps - to get a movie feel - I never)
So keeping the fps from Camera to (in my cases) DVD - gives a supperior result
    B
    • I'm strict in the kind of Audio formats I use - ONLY .aiff (or from miniDV tape Cameras) AND THEN 16-bit 48kHz or from Audio-CD (still .aiff as on normal CDs) and here 44.1kHz
If Camera is set to record in LP-mode or 12-bit Audio - Then I use an external Audio Editor to get this right
If from iTunes - I never use this directly - BUT - collect needed audio into a New PlayList - BURN THIS as a Standard Audio-CD (NO .mp3 - but .aiff here too) and then use the files on this CD in my movie project's in iMovie HD6 or FinalCut any varsion (or if forced to - iMovie'11)
    Else read this
    Audio Sync problems
    • 12.bit - should be 16.-bit (from miniDV tape - set Camera right)
Avoid recording in LP-mode on miniDV tape. This tape must be play-backed by same Camera. When Camera dies
so does the video material in worst case.
    • .mp3, .avi etc strange file formats - should be converted to .aiff 48kHz 16-bit
    • in iMovie (up to HD6) - do - Extract Audio - it most often helps
    • from iTunes - collect into a PlayList then Export out as an Audio-CD (not .mp3) and use the files on this (.aiff 44.1kHz)
    • There seems to be a problem with slow-down resp speed-up. Has to be in specific steps as 25% 50% 150% 200%
    else problems will arise
    • Audio problems when transitions is in use - especially iMovie HD/HD6
    a. Select video clips
    b. Extract Audio (Advance menu/Extract Audio)
    c. Now apply transition
    d. eventually fine-tune end and start of extracted audio clips

I have been regularly receiving video tutorials from Addicted 2 Salsa and synching these to my iPod but recently I have been unable to do so. I overcame this problem in the past by making an ipod version or loading them on to iMovie and then sharing them but this method no longer works. THere is no problem viewing them on my computer and everything else synchs okay to the iPod so what is going on and how can I overcome this problem?

Double check to make sure podcasts are configured to sync to your device from under the iPod's Podcast configuration tab.
To access the Podcasts tab for your iPod, plug your iPod in and click on it from under theDevices section in the left hand pane of iTunes.  This will bring you to the Summary tab. Along the top you should see a Podcasts tab, so go ahead and click on it.  Here you can configure how and what podcasts sync to your iPod.
If you do make any changes to do this tab, make sure to hit the Apply button in the lower right hand corner to apply the update changes to your device.
Otherwise, are you getting any error messages when you sync your iPod Classic with iTunes?

    Hi
Do You mean miniDV tape (interlaced video PAL or NTSC) ?
If so - iMovie'08 or 09 or 11 - are not tools of Choise if You want a DVD as result - They all discards every second line resulting in less quality.
Sync. Problem - If miniDV tape - How was it recorded -
Audio mode - Is Camera set to record in 12-bit 32kHz - Should be 16-bit 48kHz
Recording mode - SP (60 min on a 60 min tape) or LP (90 min on 60 min tape)
If LP-mode - Then You need - Same Camera as recorded - tolerances is to small even for a Camera of same brand and type to play-back.
I would use FinalCut Express and a setting of PAL/N TSC and 32kHz audio if Camera is set to record in 12-bit
If LP-mode - iMovie HD6 is more tolerant in Captuing than FinalCut and Imediatly after Import/Capture - Extract Audio
And set iM HD6 to NOT IMPORT AS INDIVIDUAL Clips - to many drop outs to work.

  • AUDIO SYNCH PROBLEMS

I have never had an audio synch problem 'til now. I am running 10.5.7 on a 2.8 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo 4 GB ram, 24" imac.
    iMovie 6.0.4
I have a 50 minute heavily edited project with many transitions, etc.. I have no problem with the footage downloaded from my Sony HD camcorder. I even saved many individual frames as pictures and changed them to the beat of the music in the timeline and all worked perfectly. BUT, my problem is with the "video trailers" I slipped into the timeline. The audio slips when I play back in the timeline AND when burned to DVD. BUT, it does not slip in the same place every time I preview it. If I scrub the playhead back over some of the bad scenes and play them again, they are in synch. IT KEEPS CHANGING..... When I export to a desktop movie to review - the synch problem is there and some of the audio is missing. This only happens on "movie trailers" I have downloaded.
I can't figure out why it keeps changing in the timeline and then correcting itself when I back up and play it over again. I AM GOING CRAZY........
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
    Wally

Thanks for the reply but my problem is not with iDVD - it is with iMovie - when I add "trailers" to it they go in and out of synch at different places everytime I review it before moving on. When I scrub back over the problem area and then play again, they are perfect for one time and then I try again and they are not synched. The problem is in iMovie.
    Thanks,
    Wally

  • Audio and Video not synching after export

I've uploaded DV from my camera into iMovie. In iMovie, audio and video are synching perfectly, but when I export to Quicktime they are off by about a second (or two). I've tried several different "expert settings," but still no dice. I've not had this problem occur before, so I'm confused. Anyone?

Make sure none of your clips are using custom slow motion percentages. Only use what the slow motion slider snaps to. I had the same problem and once I changed my percentages to what iMovie wanted everything exported correctly.
