Imovie and mp4 files

I have a bunch of MP4 files that I want to use for projects in imovie but it says I need to open them with imovie and make them able to be shared. I can't open them with imovie- how can I use them?

yes, all of these would work
1-quick and simple method: Have Perian installed. Open video clip in quick time player. save as movie.
2-slightly more elaborate method. Use Mpeg streamclip. Save as Movie, or whatever
3- let me help you out here- there might have been something called "IMovie help"
but if not, I'll try to get you started.
a- get iMovie working
b- go to File, then Import, then Movies, then pick your video clip, and wait until it has
finished importing (the lower box). after it has done so, and all of it has appeared
in the lower box, then press command-A there to select all, move the mouse
over to the front of the video clip, which should have a slight yellow border around all of it, until you see a hand. click and drag from the bottom box, to the top box, and the video clip should go up to the top box. make sure you have advanced controls turned on. move the mouse to the front of the video clip in the top box to the blue things you will see there, or double click, and you should get a popup menu for audio and video adjustment. After adjusting the video and audio
(don't get me started on how to snip out clips you don't want), and after clicking 'done" then go to the top of the screen, and you should see something called "SHARE" under that you can choose either Export via quicktime or Export as movie
and either way ought to work, depending on what your needs are, and let it export that movie and you should have a video clip ready to go
that concludes today's little lesson on basic iMovie use, please pay your instructor before leaving the classroom
thanks and goodnight

I think you could try either lifehacker, youtube or instructables  for how to use iMovie if you don't have the manual available

Hi apple users, I am in need of your expertise. I have a mov file and mp4 file which I need converted to DVD. However IDVD quality is terrible and wondering if anyone can help!?
I created project in iMovie then exported it to MP4 and also MOV file at highest definition possible + I added it to iDVD and had a number issues about encoding errors regarding the mp4 file. MOV worked but the quality was terrible.....
    MOV file is as follows:
    4.08GB
    Codecs: H.264, ACC
    Colour Profile: HD (1-1-1)
    Dimensions: 1920 x 1080
    Duration: 12:33
    Audio Channels: 2
    MP4 File is as follows:
    3.02GB

I have a MacBook Pro using the Yosemite system upgrade.
I have updated iDVD and iMovie.
I even bought the iSkysoft app from the mac store and that was terrible too.

First of all, Hunt--thanks for responding!
"First, where are you playing the MPEG-2, that you see that jitter?"
On both a MacBook Pro, an Acer laptop and my Mac Tower. I would love to think that it is a problem with the playback system, and that if I merely send the file off to the duplicator they won't have the same problem. Maybe that is the case...I don't know if I have a choice rather than sending it off to see. But it happens in the same spots, in the same way, on all three of the players so I'm a little reluctant to have faith.
"Another thing that can cause jitter in an MPEG-2 is the Bit-Rate - higher the Bit-Rate, the better the quality, but the larger the file. For a DVD, one is limited by the total Bit-Rate (both Audio & Video), but with longer prodcutions, some users choose too low a Bit-Rate. If this is the issue, one would need to go back to the original Project and do a new Export/Share."
Of course, but in the case there is no more 'original project.' It is gone like the wind, stolen along with his computer and backups.
I think I am stuck using one of two files as my master: a DVD he burned where I only see the stutter/vibration/jitter once, or the mpeg2 file where I see it three times. Hopefully, the duplication house can rip if off of one of them and not see the jitter. I know that in audio, my personal filed, you can do a lot to enhance already existing sound--EQ, compression, tape saturation emulation software, etc. I guess I'm hoping there is some kind of analog to the video world that address jitter after a source has been printed--if indeed the source has been printed to be jittery.
    Thanks,
    Doug

  • How do I use TC as a network drive to trans/store iMovie and iTunes files?

Can someone please walk me thru how I would have my music and iMovie files stored--not backed up, I got that under control--on my TC? My MacBookPro has less than 200MB of room and I want to be able to use the TC as a network drive (if I'm saying that correctly).
So I already have iMovie and iTunes saving files on my MacBook. I want to move those files/directories to the TC and, going forward, be able to have my MacBook save/store new iMovie and iTunes files on the TC. That is the main reason I bought this thing but I can't make it work.
I have looked high and low for this answer before bugging you guys for help but I just can't figure it out. I was able to save a few iMovie files to the TC, but when I try to access them in iMovie, I see the thumbnails but I get a little yellow triangle on each clip and it won't play it.
    Thanks in advance.
    Ed

once i click on the TC in the finder, it shows one other folder "data" (by default). this appears on my desktop as a drive. do i just start moving files anywhere onto this drive, and TM automatically can read the difference between my manual files and it's backup, or is there specific i need to save the files?

  • I have imovie and my files (movies) open.  Why can't I drag the clips into iMovies?

I have imovie and my files (movies) open.
Why can't I drag my clips into imovie?

Drag and drop doesn't work - instead do a File -> import -> movies and select from there.

What are the file extensions of the movies that won't import to iTunes
What video content works in iTunes
What video content works with iTunes and mobile devices?
    iTunes:
Video content purchased from the iTunes Store.
QuickTime and MPEG-4 movie files that end in ".mov", ".m4v", or ".mp4" and are playable in QuickTime Player.
    Video podcasts.

  • Importing avi and mp4 files into iPhoto

I just finished importing my PC photo library into iPhoto and I ran into a snag.
iPhoto does not import video files in *.avi or *mp4 format.
On my old PC photo library, I have video clips taken into mostly avi format with older digital cameras, and which are stored in the same photo directories by date. When I realized that I could not sync avi files to my iOS devices, I used a conversion program to convert the the avi files to mp4 format, and was able to sync these to my iOS devices.
Now apparently iPhoto does not recognize these mp4 files. I would like to have my video clips in iPhoto so that I can sync them as needed to my iOS devices through iTunes and also sometimes use them for video editing in iMovie. Within iMovie, I see where there is a link to the iPhoto video library... so somehow I have to get these into a format recognized by iPhoto.
Can anyone recommend a method that will accomplish this? I assume I will have to convert the avi/mp4 files to some other format. Is there a utility that will extract out the video files from my hundreds of photo directories and let me convert them to the accepted format by iPhoto, preferably keeping the time/date stamp intact?

  • IMovie imports mp4 files but with distortion

Haven't posted on here before but can't figure this one out.
I have a Sony Handycam that records in mpeg2 format only.
I used MPEG Streamclip (video converter) to convert the mpeg2(.mpg) files to mpeg4 (.mp4)
format. I have no problem importing them in iMovie and they appear to have
some strange distortion that looks like horizontal lines going through everything.
I don't see this when I play the same converted file back in QuickTime.
I already spent the $20 to get the mpeg2 codec from Apple, which irritated me and
now I can't even work with the format I want.
What should I do? Is this something that just isn't going to happen?

Use MPEG Streamclip to convert your MPEG file to Apple Intermediate Codec for editing. After editing in iMovie, you can render in h.264.

  • PLEASE HELP!  iMovie and .MPG Files

Hello. Please help me. I'm on a G5. 10.5.3. iMovie 7.1.2 (577) I have a series of .MPG files that I need to import into iMovie to edit, arrange and then export over to iDVD, etc. iMovie does not see the .MPG files. The Apple site states that iMovie sees only MPEG-4 files and DV files. I also own Quicktime Pro 7.5 (149.5). When I open the .MPG file in Quicktime Pro, even though the file plays perfectly, when I select "Export to MPEG-4" so I can create a readable file by iMovie, I get an error message that say's "Failed: Export process terminated unexpectedly (10). Complete frustration. Is there another way I can convert these files so iMovie can see them? What's wrong with my Quicktime Pro? I bought DivX Pro last night. I thought maybe that program would make an iMovie readable file. No luck. I used DivX to convert and it created a DivX file with NO SOUND. Wasted money.
If anyone has any solutions for my problems noted here or possible alternatives so I can achieve what I'm trying to do successfully, PLEASE ADVISE as soon as possible.
Thank you for taking the time to read this and THANKS, in advance, for your help.

I'm still wondering why QT Pro is failing to convert with that error message.
Well, if the video codec used in the .MPG container is MPEG2, QuickTime cannot export with a source of this format; it can only play it.
I remember reading about the reason for Apple doing this, and I forgot exactly why it is, but I think it had something to do with some legal issue. I also read that this is why Mac OS has a separate DVD Player instead of just playing DVDs right inside of QuickTime.

  • What codec to convert .MXF and MP4 files into to use with alpha channels in Ae and Pr CS6?

When I import .mxf File, shot on a Canon C300, into after effects, the alpha channel options are greyed out, when I look in, interpret footage, main. This also is the case importing .MP4 files, shot on a Gopro hero 3. I used to use final cut and using compressor convert the files to pro res 4444 or 422. What's my new workflow for preparing files with alpha channels to use in After Effect and Premiere and do I use Media Encoder to do it?

Better question: Where do you expect that Alpha channel to come from and contain any useful info for transparency? You're making a fuss over a non-issue. Unless you apply keying or other methods of creating transparency, even if there were an Alpha channel it would be fully opaque and then what's the point?

  • Alternate display and mp4 files

    Hi,
I regularly use my MacBook (OS X Leopard) in a large lecture hall with a ceiling-mounted projector. The presentations have often been prepared on my iMac G5 with Tiger, but that's no problem. I use "alternate display to view presenter information." Last week, I inserted some mp4 files into some empty slides in my sequence...it worked brilliantly at home (the files started up automatically, played, and then finished, at which point I just hit my right arrow key, which took me to my next text slide). When I went to class and hooked up the MacBook to the projector, everything was fine until I hit the key to advance to a slide with an embedded mp4. The Keynote window was immediately gone and I was left with a view of my desktop...nothing happened. Interestingly enough, Keynote had not quit. Its icon had a miniature green "play" button on it (as you would expect on a CD player, etc.). The only way for me to salvage the presentation -- as class was about to start -- was to run the presentation with display mirroring. I lost the opportunity to have my presenter notes, but advancing to and past the slides with mp4 video clips was no problem at all.
Does anyone know what happened here and how I might go about troubleshooting? Did I do something that the projector could not handle? Are there resolution settings for both displays that I should pay attention to here? As previously mentioned, I've never had a problem with alternate display and presenter notes in this hall or with any other projector on campus; that's why I assume that the mp4s were part of the problem.
Much obliged for any help whatsoever,
    Hank

Check Keynote Preferences > General and be sure the box "Copy audio and movies into document" is checked. Other than that, I have no suggestions.
    Good luck.

You'll get a ton of ideas from others so, by no means, don't think that mine will solve your issue. I, personally have fallen in love with [StreamClip|http://www.squared5.com>. It does a ton of stuff.
As for your Error 10, hopefully that's just an "out of space" (on your drive) error and not an I/O error (a problem with the drive reading/writing)
But, you said you have Quicktime Pro and you're going to iMovie so I'd try to make your .MPG files a DV Stream...I think that's what I movie likes.
    Anyway try that,
    Tom

  • CS3 and mp4 files, black frames

    Hi,
I am working as a reporter for the sports portal. So far I have been making my videos using Adobe Pro CS3. Previously I used Sony MiniDV Handycam and I had no problem editing them afterwards. Yesterday I got new camera - Sony XDCAM EX. When I import videos in my computer I have them in MP4 format. The first problem I had was that I could have sound for those MP4 files when I imported them in Adobe CS3 (if someone could help with this as well, it would be wonderful). I figured out how to get this sound but when I finally made my video and exported that, my new .avi movie had like black frames, it was dimming regularly like the movies they made in the beggining of previous century.

  • Viewing mov, avi, and mp4 files in photoshop 12

How can I view mov, mp4, and avi files in Photoshop 12?

thanks for your reply Tom. the video is from cameras, video cameras, vhs tapes, and mini dvds. everything looks much worse after import into fcpx;  i haven't imported hd files. The specs. are, everything gets blurry and color pales.  i just tried importing four more files (and optimized), all mov, (no avi or mp4), and there is no change in quality. I'm comparing the video in fcpx to the same video before it was imported. i've compared it side by side to the files being played in quicktime, real player, idvd, and el gato eye tv (third party video capture software). everything is crisp and color is vibrant before going into fcpx.

  • IMovie and AVI files

A friend of mine sent me two AVI files. I was able to import one into iMovie and make a short little clip. I don't seem to be able to import the second AVI file. Any ideas on why this is and what I can do to be able to import that file?
    Thanks in advance.
    Natalie

The Inspector Window shows that my file looks like this:
    Apple OpenDML JPEG, 640 x 480, Millions
16-bit Integer (Little Endian), Mono, 44.100 kHz
Your audio and video compression formats would appear to be compatible with iMovie '08. Are there any "extraneous" data tracks included in your file?
It would be a great help if you could list out the steps that I need to do to make this work. Thanks in advance for any assistance.
The specific steps to allow you to import the file will depend on the reason it won't import. Can you provide any additional information or a "snippet" of the original file for examination?
