Imovie - apple tv ?

I have lots of imovie projects but when i convert them (to Mpeg4 ) so that they can go in itunes and therefore sync onto my apple tv - the resolution is bad. is there a better format ? i,m connecting my apple tv via an HDMI cable to an 37" HD screen but the results are appalling.
Is there a better format to convert from the imovie projects ?
many thanks
Bruce.

Bruce, I didn't know you were using HD footage, but it shouldn't make too much difference, just choose share, then quicktime and expert settings and hit the share button, select "movie to tv" from the export drop down menu that appears and that's it. Hopefully you'll get a 1280 x 720 movie at 25 fps, but you may get one at 960 x 540, you could fiddle around with settings to get a 1280 x 720 movie but IMHO you'll never see any difference on your tv.
If you are using imovie 7 (im08) you can take pretty much the same steps using share/export using QT or you could simply use the export movie option and choose 'Large'

  • AVCHD - IMOVIE - APPLE TV - CONFUSION

    Hi All,
this is my first post on the discussion boards. I've owned my iMAC now for about 6 months and its been great.
My wife is pregnant with our first due in the next month We are wanting to buy a HD Hard Drive Camera to capture as much as we can on video of the "early days". This is where my usually Mac Literate head is getting confused ad for the first time I find myself not being able to understand the usual intuitive Mac thinking.
My intent is to record on the Handycam, import to iMovie for editing etc then display on my TV using Apple TV (of which I am about to buy, not just for this reason).
I am going to buy the Sony SR12 which records in AVCHD, according to the list of supported Camcorders within Apple Support the camcorder is supported by iMovie. In digging a little deeper though it seems I'm going to have some challenges getting the Footage onto APPLE TV.
I have researched prior to posting and am looking for confirmation here of my understanding of the steps required to get my AVCHD recorded Home movies into imovie, then onto Apple TV
    Step 1.
Record on the handycam only using AVCHD (told if I mix recording on the handycam between SD and HD iMovie will not pick-up the HD stuff.
    Step 2.
Connect Camera and import recordings similar to iPhoto (????)
At this point iMovie converts the AVCHD footage to AIC to enable storage and editing.
    Step 3. - Here's where I get confused
Somehow I need to get the now iMovie converted AIC formatted footage in iMovie to display on Apple TV.
How do I do this ?
what are the steps involved ?
do I need 3rd party software to convert formats etc ?
Thanks in advance for reading my post.
    Dylan

I have had troubles similar to the ones that you are facing now. I have an HDV (MPEG 2) camcorder that I use for family video recording, and an Apple TV. In this post, I will discuss what I normally do with my video, and I have some comments on what other users have said here.
First of all, the Apple Intermediate Codec is NOT lossless. In fact, it is highly compressed, just not as much as AVCHD (H.264). In the AIC, every frame is basically a JPEG. So even if this format looks lossless (to the eye or file size), it actually isn't.
That said, now to my workflow.
The first way I export my videos is like how Winston said. I use the 960x540 resolution in iMovie. While this format looks OK on my Apple TV, it is still not as good as if I played directly off the camcorder. This is because the resolution is only 1/4 the resolution of the original source, and the bitrate is much lower. So, I make a higher quality backup that I can edit or view at a later time, but keep in mind that this backup will not play on the Apple TV because of its video limitations. Those can be found here under 'Video formats supported':
    http://www.apple.com/appletv/specs.html
If I were in your position, I would try to back up the actual AVCHD files directly from your hard drive. Since I have never used one of these cameras, I am not exactly sure how you would get these file or what they look like, but I would guess that the hard drive mounts on your computer when you plug it in via USB. The file format might be something like .MP4 or .TS (just look for the big files). From there, MPEG Streamclip can export them to AIC if you ever want to edit them again.
I normally export to H.264 720p30 @ 8 mbps and stereo AAC audio @ 160 kbps when I know that I am finished editing. But how you want to preserve your video is totally up to you. Some people are bigger on quality than others. The only thing that I would NOT recommend is that you back up your video in AIC format (or other codecs that are that lowly compressed). This is just a total waste of hard drive space, especially when you can keep the original files for (at least) half of the space.
Hope this helps, and good luck!! -- Ian.

  • HDV footage - iMovie -- Apple TV settings

Probably already asked but no luck searching for an answer ;-(
I just bought an Apple TV and I have some iMovies in HD format (1080) and also know that the best Apple TV can do is 720p.
I have been trying to generate the best possible quality HD movies to watch them on my Apple TV but so far what I get is not good.
The preset "Movie to Apple TV" is not really good.
What are the best iMovie settings to generate a really good 720p (16:9) movie to be able to watch on the Apple TV?
    Any help is greatly appreciated.

No real need to use Quicktime Pro. If you re-encode a lossy export you'll lose quality by doinf the second step.
If you've got a movie in iMovie 6 HD choose:
    Share > Quicktime
Compress movie for > Expert Settings - then click Share
Choose your .mov filename and then under the Export tab you need to select 'Movie to Quicktime Movie', then hit options.
    Choose video:
    compression type h.264
Data rate Restrict to your choice <5000kbps
Your Quality setting and encoding Best Quality (2 pass)
Hit ok then for Sound settings:
    Format - AAC
    Channels - Stereo
Your option for Render settings though normal should be fine
AAC Target Bit rate 160kbps or less
    Ok then Ok then wait!
That way gives you full custom control over the output compared to the 'canned Quicktime settings' which are a trade off between speed/quality and file size.
VisualHub is favoured by many - I don't use it myself but there's a demo which lets you do short clips. It is certainly more straightforward to use if you want the app to do the thinking so to speak.
MPEG Streamclip is also a good converter which is quite flexible. You could export from iMovie to a DV file or other lossless codec and let MPEGStreamclip do fancy rendering.
Winston C has some good settings that he posts so look out for those.

  • AVCHD/HDV iMovie Apple TV file sizes

When you export a 1hr HD iMovie at the highest quality ATV setting what is the file size approximately? Trying to decide between the 40 and 160g AppleTV.
Is there any trick to this or is it pretty basic? Thanks.

I just checked a couple of movies on my TV.
An approximately 5 minute movie in AVCHD stores on the TV as Large (960x540) in h.264 format, and is about 145.5 MB in size. Multiplying by 12 would give you the size for an hour movie, which would be about 1.75GB.
As for 40GB or 160GB TV, I prefer the 160GB because I can have my iTunes and Movies local on the TV. If you have the 40GB, you would probably stream the tunes and movies from your Mac rather than keeping everything local. Streaming works fine as far as playing the movies. However, on my Mac, I have several copies of each movie. I have one copy optimizes for the TV, another copy optimized for the Mobile Me Web Gallery, and another copy optimized for my iPhone. If I stream my TV, I have to navigate through all these copies in the menus to find the movie I want. If I sync to TV, I can choose to sync only the TV size movies, and I make navigating the menus simpler. And I can still stream if I need to.

  • MiniDV camcorder iMovie Apple TV

I am using SD MiniDV camcorder (pal). I import and edit the clips in iMovie and then share the project to iTunes (ATV - large). Then I use ATV to watch it. I am somewhat disappointed about the picture quality in ATV. Some examples:
    1) Play the clip straight from camera (plugging it to tv). Picture is good as expected.
    2) Convert the (un-edited) dv-file to h.264 ((960 * 540, 4 mbps limit) using mpegstreamclip, then import it to iTunes. Using ATV to play it, picture is not so good as in example 1 but acceptable.
    3) The easiest method: Share the project to iTunes (large) in iMovie. Picture is worse than in example 2 and there is quite a big difference comparing ex. 1 and ex. 3. It is difficult to describe it but the contrast looks worse and the picture looks like I am watching it through some misty glasses.
Now, I could convert the dv-files to AIC-format and de-interlace them (using mpegstreamclip) before importing them into iMovie. Perhaps the outcome from iMovie would then be better. But is there another way so I would not have to re-create my projects (editing and all..) in iMovie all over again?

No, that makes it even worse. Actually the medium choice is 640 * 360, since my source is 16:9. And my sorce is 720 * 576 (flagged 16:9).
I would think 1024 * 576 would be ideal in my case. But I really did not see any difference between 960 * 540 and 1024 * 576 (using mpegstreamclip to convert the dv-avi to h.264). They both looked ok although not as good as the original.

  • How do I use iMovies 10 to continue my work from iMovies 9.08?

So iMovie 10 is out...but the interface is so different, I cannot immediately see how to pick up from where I left off with my projects.  Is anyone yet familiar with the basics?  How do I view my project, add clips from events, for example?

    Hi Terry82,
    Welcome to the Support Communities!
The iMovie User Guide should be able to give you some pointers.
I would suggest making a backup of your data via Time Machine, and then updating your projects and events:
iMovie Help: Update projects and events from earlier iMovie versions
    http://help.apple.com/imovie/mac/10.0/#mov902ad0c31
The rest of the online manual will introduce you to the updated features.
This link will provide additional resources for iMovie:

  • IMovie hung reading iMovie Library.imovielibrary

This is probably the first time I've tried to open iMovie at least since upgrading to Yosemite - maybe longer. iMovie has been hung for hours now saying "Reading "iMovie Library.imovielibrary" library. I can't do anything with iMovie. I can't even quit it though I suppose I could do a force quit but I haven't tried that yet, hoping that at some point it would finally finish whatever it is doing. After 5-6 hours, I have given up on that hope. Does anyone have any suggestions?
    Thanks.

    Hi brucerpeterson,
If you have upgraded iMove as well as Yosemite, it may be trying to read/update an old iMovie library. If that is the case and the update appears to be hanging, and/or the library in question is not one you need to keep, you may find the following articles helpful:

  • IMovie 10.0 Oct 22, 2013 won't install on my Mac Pro 2008 with OS X 10.9.  Software Updater says "Your computer's video card does not meet the minimum system requirements".  I have ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT 256 MB.  What card SHOULD I have?

After installing Mavericks on my 2008 Mac Pro (10GBRAM, several HDs, 2 x 2.8 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon) Software updater says there is an update available. iMovie  Apple   Version 10.0   Released Oct 22, 2013.
So I click the UPDATE button
Software Updater puts up a dialog that says "Your computer’s video card does not meet the minimum system requirements".
I have ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT 256 MB.  What card SHOULD I have?
    Thanks.

It is a easy fix to this problem.
    I have this video card
    iMac 24 inch, early 2008.
Graphics card: ATI Radeon HD 2600 Pro 256 MB .
    This is what you do.
    1. open app store.
    2.go to  the update tab.
Yuo will see the imovie icon waiting to install.
3.clic the sub menu tab and select "try apdate in an hour" option from the sub menu.
4.leave the app store window open and came back in an  1hr .
Like magic you will see the imovie app being upgrade it in the lunch pad .
    enjoy it.

  • Does iMovie 11 Support Editing AVCHD natively?

Does iMovie 11 support editing AVCHD files natively or conversion to an intermediate codec is needed?

    Not to the naked eye.
AVCHD is a highly compressed Group of Pictures format. iMovie does all its rendering at the end when you share the project, so to edit AVCHD natively requires that it would do all rendering plus translate the compressed frames of AVCHD on the fly. This would take a very powerful Mac, so Apple does not offer it.
Final Cut Pro does rendering in the background and does not wait until the project is complete before rendering, so it can edit natively. However, ProRes422 is a very advanced codec, and most people claim that you lose nothing in using ProRes. It also uses 4:2:2 chroma sampling (rather than iMovie Apple Intermediate Codec which uses 4:2:0) which should mean higher color fidelity.
    So iMovie = very good.
Final Cut Pro X = Best
For consumer level equipment, (like mine) you probably will not notice.

  • Imovie network storage removed?

ON the previous version of imovie (the one release before last night) I could see my network share (a windows 2012 smb share) and i was able to drag my projects and events to that drive.
Now it seems this option is gone from the new imovie 10?

Answering or adding information to my question.
Yes it seems that any non Apple NAS will not show up, i am still researching.
The work around for now is to use the old iMovie. So it seems, and it was true to me, that after updating to the new imovie, Apple puts the OLD iMovie on the Applications folder. So if you browse there you can see the new and the old. Once I opened the old iMovie I could see my regular nonApple share.
Not a perfect solution, but a good workaround. I'm happy with it

  • Can anyone recommend an application to burn DVDs from iMovie, I have a MacPro.

I am looking for a reliable application to burn DVD's from iMovie, apple used to have iDVD but I can't find it on their website, any response will be greatly appreciated, Thank you!

You can still buy iLife DVDs and install (then update, then update...) iDVD.  iDVD still works with Mavericks.

  • Share/Export finished project to 4:3 format

I recorded video using the front face camera on my iPad 3 so it would be in 4:3 format.  It plays fine even when I play it on my Windows desktop.  I import these videos into iMovie to make a movie and all is well.  However when I go to save the finished project to the Camera Roll it plays as 16:9 with the 4:3 video pillarboxed.  I am doing this on the iPad 3 so I do not seem to have all of the options I read about in these forums that seem to be in the iMovie Apple/MAC editions, let me know if they are there somewhere else.
Is there a way to import 4:3 video and have iMovie retain the 4:3 aspect ratio (without the pillarboxing) when exporting to the Camera Roll?

    ijmolder wrote:

No, iMovie only edits in HD.
HD is only in 16:9 aspect ratio.

  • My sony DCR-SR68 will not connect, stuck on "preparing"

I have tried to connect my sony DCR-SR68 via USB cable, the camera displays proper screen (to choose USB connection for the internal HD), I choose the USB connect, then the screen stays stuck on "preparing."
It's supposed to be communicating with the computer, but it stays like this for well beyond 30 minutes.

If you are attempting to use the camera with iMovie Apple publishes iMovie ’11 Supported Cameras this located by clicking

In checking it appears your camera is supported, now all you need to do is learn to use iMovie. I would recommend getting started by clicking

  • Destructive vs. non-destructive editing

If I send a sequence from FCP to a multitrack project in STP it will be a non destructive edit. Once I am in STP I right click on a track and select "Open in Editor" to take out clicks/pops, etc. Does opening this track in the editor from STP now change the edit to a destructive edit? I want to edit everything from my FCP project non-destructively in STP. Does creating a multitrack project in STP and THEN opening a track in the editor in STP change this to a destructive edit or is it still non-destructive?

    Hi Brian:
I read the manual to see the difference between destructive and non-destructive editing in STP ...
    What is STP?
This forum refers to DVD Studio Pro, the app to author DVDs.
FCP (Final Cut Pro is a non-destructive video edition software.
As far as I know iMovie (Apple entry level video edition software) is a destructive editing tool . . . no matter you can use some tricks to avoid source "destruction" (... I have not used it from some time ago).
Please, clarify your post and you'll get an answer for your problem for sure.
