IMovie at 270mbps - Cost and upgrade ?
I have 10.3.9 and because I want to play with uncompressed digital I have been told I must upgrade software because iMovie only handles 25mbps. Thus I am looking for the lowest cost way to do it. I am having 6 hours of home movies scanned into pure uncompressed digital at 270 mbps and loaded on a portable HDD. I was thinking of upgrading to iLife '08 until I read the bad reviews on iMovie '08 and saw the system requirements for Final Cut Pro or Express. It almost seems that I will have to buy an entirely new Mac with faster processor, more RAM, and largest HDD. I welcome any and all suggestions to resolve my dilemma and will Express do it for me?
Super simple. The little cover screen on the bottom comes off, the old ones out the new ones in. OWC or Crucial are both very good sources for guaranteed compatible RAM.
As old as your iMac is, have you cleaned out the dust? Dust buildup can lead to over heating issues. Remove any and all things plugged into it including the power cord, Remove the RAM access grille. Vacuum all openings starting with the RAM access area (air intake). Vacuum all ports and plugs, DVD slot and the opening across the top of the rear of the body. Blow compressed air through all your openings and vacuum again to remove any dust you loosend. Reinstall the RAM grille. Plug in the keyboard and mouse if not blue tooth. Insert power cord...
You are now in a perfect position to do a
SMC RESET
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and ALL peripherals.
Wait 15 seconds.
Attach the computers power cable.
Wait another 5 seconds and press the power button to turn on the computer.
It is the 5 second timing that initiates the reset.

I have snow leopard 10.6.8 and want to get on iCloud which requires Lion... should I buy Lion at $29.99 now and upgrade to Mountain Lion when available (I can't see where it is available for download yet) and what is cost of upgrade to Mountain Lion? Or should I simply wait for Mountain Lion?
I would wait for Mountain Lion to be released. According to Apple, Mountain Lion will be released by end of July 2012.
It will cost you only $19.99 to upgrade. You can find all the details at the following link...

How much would it cost to upgrade my ram and my hard drive in my MacbookPro
I only have a 160 GB hard drive and my 2gb ram in my Mac book pro and I was looking to upgrade it without buying another Mac book pro being that mine is only a year old. I was wondering had anyone on this forum ever upgraded and how much did it cost and was it cost efficient.

You can buy a 1TB internal drive for a little over $100. You will need to get an external enclosure to format and clone your internal drive to the 1TB before installation. Yes, you could install the 1TB (or whatever size you want) into your MBP, but it'll take you forever to get everything set up again, move over any software.
I'm assuming you have a mid-2009 MBP, which means you could upgrade it to a 2X4GB configuration, which might cost you around $150 (you can get cheaper RAM, but there's a reason it's cheaper).
Once you've cloned your drive to the new internal drive, you will need to make certain you have the right tools (tiny screwdrivers and such). It should take you less than 10 minutes to make the change.
I have upgraded by my HDD and RAM recently to the largest I could find of each. Best investment ever. And no, I'm not a techie who builds his own computers, but this is easy. -
I have created several short (3-5 minute) movies using iMovie 10.0.6 and Yosemite. I want to combine those short movies into one movie that I can loop and burn on a DVD or show in iMovie Theater. How can I do it? The movies are now shared to iTunes.
Another easy way to fix this.
What I've noticed is that upon upgrading your projects and events to work with iMovie 10, initially it will work... Until you quit iMovie and reopen it again. Any events with hashtags will show up without the star next to the iMovie event. SO, if you happen to read this, after upgrading to iMovie 10 from its predecessor, immediately change the event name to NOT include a hashtag/pound symbol.
Otherwise, if it's too late, you can either do the above or this...
Hold down option and click on iMovie. This will prompt you Locate, Create a New Library, Cancel this window, or Choose a different library. What you want to do is create a new library, call it whatever you want to, this will only be temporary. After the program opens, it should be a blank Library. Then go to File > Open Library > iMovie Library (your original library) and proceed to change the name of your events. Quit the program. Go into your Movies folder in Finder, delete the library you temporarily created, and your back in business. -
IMovie '09 keeps crashing and now I can't export my work.
I've been having nightmares with iMovie '09 until I've upgraded my OSX to Yosemite.
It seemed to be working fine since then.
Now, out of the blue, all the issues are back: iMovie has crashed at least 20 times in the last 1 hour while doing very simple operations.
The huge problem is that now I can't export all the work I've made on it (which is 2-week worth).
The only difference between now and the moment after I've upgraded the OSX is that I'm now working at home and not at the office (where there was a different keyboard and vga screen connected).
Please help as this is an important project I'm working on for my company and I'm desperate.
I have a MacBook Pro, 15", 2.66 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB RAM, mid 2010 generation

IMovie quit's unexpectedly since upgrade to 10.10
Since upgrading to OSX 10.10 from Mavericks, on a late 2012 Mac Mini (2.3 GHz i7, 4GB Ram) iMovie will now quit unexpectedly on every load after a few seconds.
It appears to be attempting to convert my iMovie Library but this process never completes and crashes before completion. The progress bar shows "Loading event ..." before unexpectedly exiting. iMovie is now unusable and (I fear) has wrecked my iMovie Library.
I have tried without success...
- Rebooting
- Moving my iMovie library so iMovie can't find it and has to load without attempting to open the library (it finds it anyway)
- Deleting ~/Libary/Containers/com.apple.iMovieApp folder which makes no difference (it was advised elsewhere)
- Lamenting my choice to upgrade
Any assistance offered would be greatly appreciated.

There are essentially a few fixes for 'iMovie Unexpectedly Quit' which I will detail here that may resolve a number of issues. For this specific problem the solution was FIX3. You may wish to use combinations of or all of the suggested actions taken. It's your responsibility to ensure you backup your files before modifying or deleting them.
FIX1: Delete the iMovie cache found in ~/Library/Containers/...
Highlight the following text: ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.iMovieApp
Right click the highlighted text and at the bottom of that dialog select Services > Reveal in Finder
This will open the folder; copy this folder to your desktop or another location
Go back to the finder window you copied the files from and delete* this folder (move to trash)
Open iMovie
*[WARNING: Make sure you followed step 3. or iMove may not work]
FIX2: Delete the iMovie preference file com.apple.iMovieApp.plist
Highlight the following text: /Library/Quicktime/com.apple.iMovieApp.plist
Right click the highlighted text and at the bottom of that dialog select Services > Reveal in Finder
This will open the folder with the file you need selected; copy the .plist file to your desktop or another location
Go back to the finder window you copied the files from and delete com.apple.iMovieApp.plist.
Open iMovie
*[WARNING: Make sure you followed step 3. or iMove may not work]
FIX3: Remove third party components from /Library/Quicktime/
Highlight the following text: /Library/Quicktime/
Right click the highlighted text and at the bottom of that dialog select Services > Reveal in Finder
This will open the folder; copy all the files to your desktop or another location
Go back to the finder window you copied the files from and delete everything except AppleIntermediateCodec.component and AppleMPEG2Codec.component which are required by iMovie.
Open iMovie
Optional: You can then trial and error return copied components to establish what is causing the problem.
*[WARNING: Make sure you followed step 3. or iMove may not work] -
I can drag my first clip from the New Event window into the Project Library, but not the second. I can highlight the second clip in the New Event window, but it won't "drag". The "E" key works for the first clip, but not the second.I've been using IMovie daily and the problem just appeared. No upgrades to the computer and no new software installed. IMovie 9.0.9 and OSX 10.8.5
Thanks victoryhat. I learned some new things from this very clear tutorial. But it didn't answer my question about why the titles don't stay with the video when I export it.
He did mention something that might be a clue however. When he talked about importing a title he created as an image, he noted that he was careful to make the image the same size as the video he was adding it to: 1280 x 720. Since I took the video with an iPhone in the vertical position, my video image isn't the same size and orientation as the titles.
Maybe there is a way I should be setting the screen for this size??? I'll go back and play around. Meanwhile thanks for alerting me to Gary Rosenzweig's MacMost tutorials. Very clear. I'll look for more. -
Most cost efficient upgrade for A3 speed increase on '07 iMac 24"?
I've read a bunch of posts on this forum on the "hardware upgrade" subject and I am trying to prioritize my options.
I have a 24" 2.4Ghz iMac7,1 w/ 3g or ram and the stock 320g internal drive. I have my A3 masters referenced on an external WD 1TB drive using the USB port. I am on OS 1.5.8
As I am shooting more weddings, the speed it getting unbearably slow, especially when using brushes on raw files (from a Nikon D7000).
I would love to simply get a newer machine, but the cost is just too much with a growing family. So I am wondering what will give me the biggest bang for the buck. Most of my info comes from references found on this forum including the excellent installation guide at amfiteatar.org
- Upgrade to OS 10.6 ($30)
- change ram from 3G to 6G (Kingston Apple 2 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SODIMM and Kingston Apple 4GB Kit (2x2GB Modules) 667MHz DDR2 SoDimm => total $130)
- change internal drive to WD Caviar blue 1TB $70)
Total: $230.
Does this make any sense? IS there a better path for this?
Thanks very much for any feedback.
BoUpdate.
I did the open heart surgery yesterday (replace original internal drive from 320g to 1tb and upgrade RAM from 3g to 6g) and it is a resounding success.
Overall speed in Aperture seems to have improved between 2 and 4 times. Particularly noticeable are the retouch operation with brushes.
So far the 6gb transplant is working without any hitch. After doing a lot of research on it, it seems like the key is to get matching sets of chips from a reputable vendor. OWC in my case.
So for about $200 and 2 hours of labor (not including hours of research on the net of course) this 3 year old machine has gotten a new lease on life. Definitely worth it!
In case it helps anyone else, here are the 3 most useful links I have found for this operation:

Plus countless great info on this forum of course.
Thank you Frank and Mr Endo.
Bo
PS: Anyone with an answer of whether Snow Leopard would make a difference in A3 speed on a 07 iMac. Some people on this board say yes but since it is not a 64 bit machine, I would not think so. -
CS2 for Windows - cost of upgrade to CS6
Can I upgrade CS2 for Windows to CS6 for Windows 7, and what is the cost? I am also currently subscribed to CC for the Mac, which will be continued. Thank you.
Apologies, I should have been clearer at the outset. I do all my bird photography on the Mac OSX platform via a desktop as well as a MBP when away. So, I have already two computers authorised as required and limited to. Lately, I have started astrophotography and the majority of my software is Windows 7 based, thus for ease I acquired a third computer, a PC laptop, for this purpose. I did start with Photoshop for Windows and upgraded as far as CS2 before changing to CS3 for the Mac and eventually (CS4, 5, and 6) to CC for the Mac. The question now is: can I deauthorise the Mac laptop in order to authorise the PC laptop and change back and forth as many times as I wish, and as often as I want? I am the only user, of course.
In reply #4 above, I had decided to simply copy my files onto an external drive and work off that in CC on the Mac, as I have been doing. Seeing I had CS for Windows in the fist place years ago, I was trying to find a solution at little or no cost to me, to upgrade that Windows version, but I guess it's not possible, unless your answer to my question above is affirmative. Many thanks for your help. -
How much does it cost to upgrade?
I have the 2nd generation ipod touch (i think) and i was wondering how much it costs to upgrade it to the new one?
You would have to pay the full cost of the new one. There is no "upgrade".
Is there an upgrade for any oter music player/computer/device?
Apple will recycle your old ipod for you and give you a 10% discount on a new one. -
Imovie 6.0.3 and QT 7.6 ?
If I upgrade to QT 7.6, will IM 6 still work/play properly?
While you are talking about iMovie 6.0.3 and QT 7.6, I thought I'd jump in. I am trying to import content from a tape on my Sony HVR V1U camcorder and the content doesn't appear on the iMovie screen or in the clip windows after I hit import.
It sees the camera, because I can control the functions from iMovie. At one point I got a message saying something like I don't have the required plug-in for QT to edit, view, HD content. And it says to reinstall QT. I never had the disks as it came with the system.
Any help (this is my first attempt at video) would be greatly appreciated. My son filmed and edited a movie on his PC in an hour and he's giving me *%#& about my Mac. I know it's me.

Will Tiger support iMovie 4, iDVD 4, and iPhoto 4?
My daughter's new iPod nano will force me to upgrade from OS 10.3 to 10.4 (not yet ready to gamble on 10.5). Can anyone please tell me if iMovie 4, iPhoto 4, and iDVD 4 are supported in Tiger? I really depend upon these for my workflow and can't take any chances... Thanks!
Thanks, Lennart -- that's exactly what I wanted to know. About once a year I ask a question and you've always come up with the answer and been a terrific help! Many thanks!

My macbook pro os x is currently running 10.5.8. What is the cost to upgrade to the most current?
Assuming you have the upgrade system requirements you would first purchase a Snow Leopard DVD and upgrade to Snow Leopard. Then you update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 to gain access to the App Store where you would then purchase and download Lion. Costs are $29.00 for Snow Leopard and $30.00 for Lion.
Lion System Requirements
Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or Xeon processor
2GB of memory
OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
7GB of available space
Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.

How to Install OS X Updates Successfully
A. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions:
Boot from your current OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. Then select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger) and/or TechTool Pro (4.5.2 for Tiger) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
B. Make a Bootable Backup Using Restore Option of Disk Utility:
Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
Select the destination volume from the left side list.
Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
Check the box labeled Erase destination.
Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the external backup drive. Source means the internal startup drive.
C. Important: Please read before installing:
If you have a FireWire hard drive connected, disconnect it before installing the update unless you will boot from this drive and install the update on it. Reconnect it and turn it back on after installation is complete and you've restarted.
You may experience unexpected results if you have installed third-party system software modifications, or if you have modified the operating system through other means. (This does not apply to normal application software installation.)
The installation process should not be interrupted. If a power outage or other interruption occurs during installation, use the standalone installer (see below) from Apple Downloads to update. While the installation is in progress do not use the computer.
D. To upgrade:
Purchase the Snow Leopard Retail DVD.
Boot From The OS X Installer Disc:
Insert OS X Installer Disc into the optical drive.
Restart the computer.
Immediately after the chime press and hold down the "C" key.
Release the key when the spinning gear below the dark gray Apple logo appears.
Wait for installer to finish loading.
E. If updating:
Download and install update(s)
Use Software Update, or
Download standalone updater(s).
Once you then purchase and download Lion from the App Store consider this before you actually install Lion:
Make Your Own Lion Installer
1. After downloading Lion you must first save the Install Mac OS X Lion application. After Lion downloads DO NOT click on the Install button. Go to your Applications folder and make a copy of the Lion installer. Move the copy into your Downloads folder. Now you can click on the Install button. You must do this because the installer deletes itself automatically when it finishes installing Lion.
2. Get a USB flash drive that is at least 8 GBs. Prep this flash drive as follows:
Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
3. Locate the saved Lion installer in your Downloads folder. CTRL- or RIGHT-click on the installer and select Show Package Contents from the contextual menu. Double-click on the Contents folder to open it. Double-click on the SharedSupport folder. In this folder you will see a disc image named InstallESD.dmg.
4. Plug in your freshly prepared USB flash drive. You are going to clone the InstallESD.dmg disc image to the flash drive as follows:
Open Disk Utility.
Select the USB flash drive from the left side list.
Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
Check the box labeled Erase destination.
Select the USB flash drive volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
Drag the InstallESD.dmg disc image file into the Source entry field.
Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
When the clone is completed you have a fully bootable Lion installer that you can use without having to re-download Lion. -
What About Returning iPad 2 Replace and Upgrading To The New iPad?
I rently got a replace iPad for my iPad 2 cause the glass was broke but now I'm wondering if I could bring the replace iPad 2 back and upgrade to The New iPad and just pay the diffents?
Because they don't do that. Apple exchanged your broken iPad for an identical model for the out-of-warranty replacement price and that's all they'll do for you. If you'd wanted the new iPad, you should have sold your broken iPad 2 for parts and put that money and the replacement cost toward a new iPad. As it is now, your only option is to sell the replacement you received and use that money toward a new iPad.
Regards.
