Imovie Black Screen

Hello - I hope somebody can help me with this.
I had Imovie 08 installed and everything worked perfectly. All of a sudden when I opened Imovie nothing played on preview screen (events or projects) either when I scrolled across the clip or tried to play the clip.
After a long time of frustration I upgraded to Ilife09 to install Imovie09 hoping this might fix it. Still no success!
I have upgraded from Leopard to Snow Leopard 10.6.2.
The sound plays fine but no video.
I have tried exporting a clip but once exported to my desktop I still can't view it.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

PS - I have plenty memory, disc space etc. I have re-installed Imovie several times.

Called Apple - spent 45 minutes on the phone with them and NOTHING... SO frustrating. I tried deleting the plist (moving it, actually so as not to completely lose my projects) and then copy/pasteing the project I'm working on.
On the phone, here's what we did (didn't work):
- Deleted all of the Event Cache files (move to trash, Empty Trash)
- Moved com.apple.imovie8.plist and imovie7.plist to the desktop and restarted iMovie (all projects had disappeared at this point like a clean slate for iMovie)
- Attempted to preview new movie with various clips from the event - didn't work... only the Audio would play
Independently I tried...
- Moving the com.apple.imovie8 and 7 .plist to desktop after select all/copy the project i'm working on
- rebooting iMovie and then trying to make it all work
- pasted, waited 10 mins, iMovie crashed
- rebooted imovie, the pasting didn't go through but projects were back
AppleCare said to call back tomorrow but I need the project DONE in 2 hours and it takes me roughly an hour to render/export everything.
Would LOVE if anyone has a fix out there that allows us to keep our projects. This is insanely frustrating. Maybe the new iMovie for iPhone app will work better....?

I am not sure if its a Mavericks issue, but I think I should report somewhere about it:
I have a Early 2011 MacBook Pro and upgraded it yesterday to Mavericks. I played a bit around with the new iMovie today, and suddendly the display turned black. I did a hard reset and encountered a scambled boot screen. I saw the Apple logo with wired grey lines. And the Mac didn't boot. I tried everyting: Reset PRAM/NVRAM and all other magic tricks out there. Diagnostics was not booting, the same as the Recovery system. I even tried to boot Windows7 from the bootcamp partition, but only got saw a half windows logo totally pixeled. I also tried to connect an external Display: nothing working.
For me, the diagnostics was clear: ****, the logics board was fried. Especially the graphics gard.
But something was strange for me: My machine was running smooth for 2 1/2 years, and 1 day after installating Mavericks it kills itself? ***?
And guess what: After the 1001st attempt to boot, playing around with all available boot shortcuts, I just noticed the boot screen looked okay again. And the machine booted. The last thing I was doing was doing verbose boot (holding shift, then holding shift+v).
I have no idea what happened, but I am happy its back to normal. And I hope it will not happen again in a few minutes. If so, I will report. If not, be happy to find something when you google for it. And if you work for Apple, please tell me what the **** happened and fix it. I am scared now to ever start iMovie again.

Could be your monitor power supply is going. could also be 10.6.6 so first try to get back to a OSX which did not give you problems.

After opening iMovie, black screen appears. Why?

I am trying to use imovie and i have never had this problem before. All of my videos are completly grey and when you try and play them all i get is a black screen but i still hear audio. Can you please help and tell me what i need to do. Thank you

Make sure all of the videos used in the project that is having that problem are from the same event. If they are from multiple events, move them all into one event.

My iMovie is skipping like crazy when I try to edit and then goes to a black screen and you can only hear the audio!?!? What's happening??

I use iMovie almost everyday for Youtube videos. I have nothing in my imovie except the 5 clips that I'm editing now. I have all my media on an external hard drive and delete everything after I'm done with ( I empty all trash cans). My iMovie is now skipping when I try to edit and then the clips just go to a black screen and I can only hear the audio, this has been going on for a week and I don't know what to do?!? Any help?

Try Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM

• AVI or .avi is no Video Format/Codec - it is a container and usually contains something iMovie can not use OK.
Open it with QuickTime-player and then open inspector (cmd+I) and read
• Video Format/Codec: nnnnnnnnnnnnn
What does it read ? (all of it)

• import it into iPhoto and in iMovie import from title iPhoto Movies at top in Events window - or
• convert it into streamingDV .dv or AIC and use this.
AND - my read 24fps - I would convert this to PAL 25fps or to NTSC 29.97 (if for US) by JES_Deinterlacer.

I had a similar problem, and i found that the photo was of very low resoluton. As a test I resized the image to a lrager resolution using photoshop CS4 and re saved it as JPG. I imported the new saved image and it seem to have fixed the problem.

How do I get my imovie to have a black screen when not running instead of a picture

you can simply delete the section you want and add text but delete the text so its plain black or go to google, google images black screen and pick one and add it over where it shows you by draging from desk top straight into ur video and select cutaway.
If its a part of a long clip...
Get to the part right before it shows you and press (command shift S) than where you want it to pick back up agin do same thing. than delete or comand delete the section of u... (than read above and insert one of those in its place!)

IMovie transitions are rendering as black screen.

I am having problems with iMovie 6 on an iMac intel core 2 duo 2ghz on the iMac. The transitions are all rendering as black. I did not install any new transitions or effects but only using the standard ones that come with the installer. The iMove version is 6.0.3. It goes along as regular rendering because of the red horizontal progress bar but when I view it, the entire transition is just a black screen.

Thanks, all the standard transitions that come with stock iMovie 6 exhibit the black. The black is the exact same length of the actual transition, the rest of the clips are fine. I downloaded the files directly from a SD card reader originally from a sony HD camera, the originals were in AVCHD format. Funny that the same project on a G4 powerbook using the same iMovie version renders them fine. I just prefer the intel iMac for it's speed in rendering. I tried trashing the imovie preferences but with no luck.

Black screen within imovie after unexpected close but still have audio

video imported fine into events, i edited movie adding photos music and text overlays and then imovie closed unexpectedly. when i reopened and played the movie, the preview window played back with a black screen but i can still hear the audio (both in event library and project library). however the photos are still visible when played back, only the original video clip plays back black screen.
i went to the imovie events folder in the finder and the video clip plays fine within quicktime. does anyone know what i can do to fix?

I figured out what to do. i removed to .mov file out of the events folder onto the desktop, opened imovie and clicked on the event in the event library which showed this message, "No matching video". i then closed imovie and moved the .mov file back into the events folder, reopened imovie and viola, video now plays back properly.

Can anyone tell me what to do when iMovie launches into a black screen...the only way to quit is by force quiting.
iMovie will launch as another user.

Could you explain what you mean by "try to record on iMovie?" Are you referring to imports or exports here?

When I try to put a PNG watermark that I made myself into a "Picture in Picture" it just gives a black screen instead of the watermark

My channel is partnered with TGN. And they gave me a watermark. When I put the TGN watermark in it's fine, but when i put my custom watermark in I get a black screen.
Please help me. I am using Imovie 9.0.8 Macbook pro OS X 10.8.3

In the iMovie menu item File > Project Properties for Initial Photo Placement choose Crop - NOT Fit in Frame or Ken Burns (iMovie's default setting is Ken Burns). The latter 2 options will convert the .png image to a .jpg image.
If you've already placed the png image into the timeline as a Picture in Picture, you will need to delete it then change the preference setting to Crop. Then you can insert the png image.

Why do I get a black screen when I move video to laptop

Not sure If this is an io6 thing, before I upgraded I simply plugged my ipad into my windows laptop went to the right folder and copied the video across, no probs.
Now when I do this QuickTime opens but it has a black screen although the sound is there.
What is going on, nothing I do seems to fix it. I have used imovie on ipad for some videos although it is effecting those that have not been through imovie as well.
Any suggestions.

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It won’t solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of this exercise is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account, or is system-wide. Enable guest logins and log in as Guest. For instructions, launch the System Preferences application, select “Help” from the menu bar, and enter “Set up a guest account” (without the quotes) in the search box.
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Any application you run will behave as if you were running it for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
As Guest, launch the application(s) and test. Same problem(s)?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
