IMovie Cache

When I open the files that I imported from my camera they have something called an iMovie Cache. I can't figure out what this is. I also noticed that each folder that says "iMovie cache" also has a duplicate video in it which i'm sure is just taking up space on my hard-drive.
Do I need those files?
I'm not sure if this was the problem but I once deleted them and I think it messed up the movies on one of my iMovie projects. Could that be true?

Hi
Don't know what iMovie Cache is/does - BUT
I know that on my Mac there are two folders
• iMovie Projects - and -
• iMovie Events
I do NEVER touch them or anything within them ! It messes things up for iMovie'08 & 09 & 11
Moving Projects and Events (only events in iM'08) Should be done within iMovie !

  • Can i delete iMovie cache files

Is it OK to delete files or do I still need on 2nd hardrive when I back up

In principle it is always possible to delete cache files and it is never necessary to back them up - However, I would not advise touching them unless you are clearly running out of disk space (in which case you probably don't have eneough space for imovie to work well).
Precisely which files you you propose to delete?
    Geoff.

  • Hidden cache files (imovie) - lost 60gb memory - can you help me recover?

Ok so here is my problem.  Using the Panasonic GH2 for filming and decided to import the .mov files to my external drives via imovie, easy right?  Over the period of some 800gb of imports I slowly lost 60+ gb of drive space that I have not been able to recover and am now in dire need of deleting as I am down to zero drive space on my main drive.
    What I have done:
Pulled and deleted all imovie cache files (i.e. user/movies/imovie...etc.)
    Deleted a my .plist
    Deleted all user cache files
Deleted imovie files from iphoto library
There are probably other items I am leaving out, but I have gone to great lengths to fine this cache of thumbnails or some strange hidden series of files that imovie produces for back up or something.  Need help here.
Can someone tell me what other measures I should consider for recovering this lost space???
    Thanks a million!

    EUREKA!!!
I don't know how old this post is but I hope this will be helpful for anyone who stumbles around here.
So, I had the same issue with phantom memory being guzzled up by some unknown videos that I could not find and iMovie was the culprit. So with that being said, the short answer that will most probably fix this is to delete your projects. Even if you erased the clips that you used, the program seems to keep the cache and encrypting, etc of every video you made with these projects. For me, I only had 2 projects on the mac and I kept deleting the clips and adding new ones. 1 of them I was using for months and it had 100 GB of data stored within that 1 project!!
I know that this may be a pain since you lose your format if you make videos regularly but unfortunately, this is the only way that I found to delete this dead space. The better fix would be to know how to get rid of the dead data without deleting the projects. My movies are usually very small and have a simple format so it doesn't bother me much to have to delete my project after I make my clips.
Another thing, the clips you import to iMovie stay in a semi-hidden area and it keeps ALL your clips there. You can find these clips by going to File - Reveal in Event. You can also go to Reveal in Finder as well but they are the same clips so you only need to delete them from 1 of these 2 areas.
If this option is grayed out, go to All Events first, select the event(s) and then see if the option is now available.
    I hope this helps!

  • IMovie quits unexpectedly

Hello, I am really hoping someone can help me. I have never installed re-installed any apps on my iMac. And just resently started using iMovie. I have never used it before and it was fine at the beginning but after couple of days it started crashes. 1st problem was that it quit when I try to view project full screen. I just skip it and continue work but then some options (such as adding text, transitins, etc.) force iMovie to quit. And now when I decided to just finalize what I already have and export to CD it quits after few seconds. It seems that the whole appication is just garbage. I can't do anything on it. It crashes at anyting I try to do and all the time. Is there anyway to fix it? This is the worst app I ever used. I have tried to trash the preference file as insructed on previous issues like this but didn't help (it comes back all the time). Please advise if there is anything can be done to fix this app? Thank you.

    Hi
Most probably - Most common thing is
    • iMovie pref. file got corrupted (by force Quitting - most often)
Test if this is the problem by
    • Create a New User Account (this forces iMovie to create new pref and cache files on next up-start)
    • Log into this
    • Re-try iMovie
If it now works then the pref. or cache file are very likely the problem
Medicine if this is the problem - in the original User Account
    • Find the files and trash them
    • They are in the Library IN YOUR USER ACCOUNT FOLDER - Not the one on Your Hard Disk first window (root level)
    • Delete iMovie pref. file
    iMovie pref. file resides.
    Mac Hard Disk (start-up HD)/Users/"Your account"/Library/Preferences
and is named. (one or more of these)
    com.apple.iMovie.plist
    com.apple.iMovie3.plist
    com.apple.iMovie7.plist
    com.apple.iMovie8.plist
    com.apple.iMovie9.plist
    com.apple.iMovieApp.plist
    and find
    com.apple.iApps.plist
While iMovie is NOT RUNNING - move this/these file/s out on to desk-top.
    Now restart iMovie.
If You run Mac OS X.7 or more - then the Library in the User-account folder is invisibly and need to be set to be viewable. IT IS NOT in the Library on Root level (when opening MacintoshHD - first window = root level)
( It can be done like this: Open Terminal, then enter: chflags nohidden ~/Library
Press return, then restart, and it will always be visible until the next major update, when you do the same thing again. )
    or - do like this.
On the Finder window at the top left of the screen,
Hold down the Option key and clicked on Go.
This allowed You to see the Library folder and select it.
Then keep the Option button pressed down in order to see and select the Library folder.
Once found it, You are able to navigate to the iMovie preferences file and move it to the trash.  iMovie then start’s up fine!
    Else
When iMovie doesn't work as intended this can be due to a lot of reasons
    • iMovie Pref files got corrupted - trash it/they and iMovie makes new and error free one's
    • Creating a new User-Account and log into this - forces iMovie to create all pref. files new and error free
    • Event or Project got corrupted - try to make a copy and repair
    • a codec is used that doesn't work
    • problem in iMovie Cache folder - trash Cache.mov and Cache.plist
    • version miss match of QuickTime Player / iMovie / iDVD
    • preferences are wrong - Repair Preferences
    • other hard disk problem - Repair Hard Disk (Disk Util tool - but start Mac from ext HD or DVD)
    • External hard disks - MUST BE - Mac OS Extended (hfs) formatted to work with Video
( UNIX/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange - works for most other things - but not for Video )
    • USB-flash-memories do not work
    • Net-work connected hard disks - do not work
    • iPhoto Library got problems - let iPhoto select another one or repair it. Re-build this first then try to re-start iMovie.
    This You do by
    _ close iPhoto
    _ on start up of iPhoto - Keep {cmd and alt-keys down}
_ now select all five options presented
_ WAIT a long long time
    • free space on Start-Up (Mac OS) hard disk to low (<1Gb) - I never go under 25Gb free space for SD-Video (4-5 times more for HD)
    • external devices interferes - turn off Mac - disconnect all of them and - Start up again and re-try
    • GarageBand fix - start GB - play a few notes - Close it again and now try iMovie
    • Screen must be set to million-colors
    • Third-party plug-ins doesn't work OK
    • Run "Cache Out X", clear out all caches and restarts the Mac
    • Let Your Mac be turned on during one night. At about midnight there is a set of maintenance programs that runs and tidying up. This might help
    • Turn off Your Mac - and disconnect Mains - for about 20-30 minutes - at least this resets the FireWire port.
    • In QuickTime - DivX, 3ivx codec, Flip4Mac, Perian etc - might be problematic - temporarily move them out and re-try
(I deleted the file "3ivxVideoCodec.component" located in Mac HD/Library/Quicktime and this resolved my issue.)
    buenrodri wrote
I solved the problem by removing the file: 3ivxVideoCodec.component. after that, up-dated iMovie runs ok.
Last resort: Trash all of iMovie and re-install it

  • Newbie Question: Why can't I open my iMovie project in FCP?

    Hello all--
I'm sure some variation of this question has been posted a bajillion times but I can't seem to find the answer. At this point I feel like a damsel in distress. Rescue me?
I've been working with iMovie for about two years now and I've recently been learning Final Cut Pro to up the ante on my videos. However, when I tried to import an iMovie project into FCP yesterday, it didn't quite work. Let me explain what I did and what happened:
    1) I exported my (edited but previously unpublished) iMovie project by clicking Share>Export Final Cut XML
    2) I opened FCP and clicked File>Import>XML and then selected the XML, leaving all the boxes checked
    3) FCP imported the project as a sequence; however, the entire sequence reads "Media Offline" in the Canvas.
    4) I clicked File>Reconnect Media and the list of offline files is overwhelming. I tried my luck by clicking "locate" and going to my imovie folders to find the clips, but even when the browser allowed me to select a clip, when I double clicked it, nothing in the sequence changed - it's all still "offline."
I really don't know much about media management, I'll admit - I'm wondering if maybe iMovie saves edited clips in a folder other than the events or originals folder - maybe the edited clips become "temporary items"? I know I have a ridiculous amount of imovie cache and temporary items and I never touch them because there are just so many of them and I don't want to mess anything up. But could the files that FCP claims to be "offline" in fact be located in these "temporary" folders? I mean, I've looked everywhere else on my hard drive and nothing is working! Sorry, I am probably just confusing myself MORE (and you), but maybe SOMEONE will know what in the world I should do
    Thanks in advance.

Welcome to the family. I don't think many of us have ever used iMovie so your post might be more quickly answered in that forum.
My suggestion is to forget trying to move the project. Rebuild it in FCP. The exercise will teach you much more about your new software than fighting XML.
If you don't feel like doing that, try a smaller iMovie project, something with only two or three clips and one dissolve.
The larger issue is probably how iMovie stores its captured media which is completely different from how FCP does it. And the format is different. FCP does not, IIRC, view iMovie's default dvstream codec. You will want to export your movie clips as DV.

  • When i open imovie, it freezes. why, and what should i do?

I have a very important project to do for school and have to give it back next week. It's on iMovie, and it's a 54minutes video. Since yesterday, I have a problem. I don't know if because it's too big, but when I open it, it freezes, and the little rainbow turns and turns and turns..... And because of that projects, I can't start any other project, and I can't go on any other project. That really freaks me out. PLEASE HELP ME!

    Try this:
    1. Quit iMovie
    2. Restart the Mac
    3. Repair permissions (open Disk Utility in your Applications/Utilities folder), select Macintosh HD and choose repair Permissions from the buttons displayed
    4. Move iMovie preferences (or trash them). They're at <your usenrame>/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iMovieApp.pList (the name might vary slightly, depending, but will always start com.apple.iMovie...)
    5. Delete the iMovie cache (in <your username>/Library/Caches, called com.apple.iMovieApp or similar. Delete the whole folder
    6. Restart the Mac.
    Hopefully, that will fix it

  • IMovie quit's unexpectedly since upgrade to 10.10

Since upgrading to OSX 10.10 from Mavericks, on a late 2012 Mac Mini (2.3 GHz i7, 4GB Ram) iMovie will now quit unexpectedly on every load after a few seconds.
It appears to be attempting to convert my iMovie Library but this process never completes and crashes before completion. The progress bar shows "Loading event ..." before unexpectedly exiting. iMovie is now unusable and (I fear) has wrecked my iMovie Library.
    I have tried without success...
    - Rebooting
    - Moving my iMovie library so iMovie can't find it and has to load without attempting to open the library (it finds it anyway)
    - Deleting ~/Libary/Containers/com.apple.iMovieApp folder which makes no difference (it was advised elsewhere)
    - Lamenting my choice to upgrade
Any assistance offered would be greatly appreciated.

Overwhelmed by responses to my question; I have actually discovered the solution. There are essentially a few fixes for 'iMovie Unexpectedly Quit' which I will detail here that may resolve a number of issues. For this specific problem the solution was FIX3. You may wish to use combinations of or all of the suggested actions taken. It's your responsibility to ensure you backup your files before modifying or deleting them.
FIX1: Delete the iMovie cache found in ~/Library/Containers/...
    Highlight the following text: ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.iMovieApp
Right click the highlighted text and at the bottom of that dialog select Services > Reveal in Finder
This will open the folder; copy this folder to your desktop or another location
Go back to the finder window you copied the files from and delete* this folder (move to trash)
    Open iMovie
*[WARNING: Make sure you followed step 3. or iMove may not work]
FIX2: Delete the iMovie preference file com.apple.iMovieApp.plist
    Highlight the following text: /Library/Quicktime/com.apple.iMovieApp.plist
Right click the highlighted text and at the bottom of that dialog select Services > Reveal in Finder
This will open the folder with the file you need selected; copy the .plist file to your desktop or another location
Go back to the finder window you copied the files from and delete com.apple.iMovieApp.plist.
    Open iMovie
*[WARNING: Make sure you followed step 3. or iMove may not work]
FIX3: Remove third party components from /Library/Quicktime/
    Highlight the following text: /Library/Quicktime/
Right click the highlighted text and at the bottom of that dialog select Services > Reveal in Finder
This will open the folder; copy all the files to your desktop or another location
Go back to the finder window you copied the files from and delete everything except AppleIntermediateCodec.component and AppleMPEG2Codec.component which are required by iMovie.
    Open iMovie
Optional: You can then trial and error return copied components to establish what is causing the problem.
*[WARNING: Make sure you followed step 3. or iMove may not work]

  • Is it possible to recover iSight footage in iMovie?

I took some footage with iSight to Import directly into iMovie. Once I was done, I closed the lid of my laptop before the thumbnails were finished generating, expecting that the process would continue when I opened it back up again. When I did open my laptop, only .2 seconds of the footage had generated and the rest was nowhere to be found. I looked in Finder under iMovie Events > New Event... > iMovie Thumbnails > iMovie Cache to no avail. Also in "Search For" > Yesterday & Today. Is there another place where this might have magically been stored, or did I actually just screw the pooch and lose all that footage in one fell swoop?
Thanks for any help out there that exists to offer.
    William

You're most welcome, and thanks for letting me know you found my reply helpful.
Also, thanks for confirming that you were recording directly into iMovie.  Hopefully you will be able to recover your irreproducible recording.
wmdbrattain wrote: ... It is has been my experience that iSight doesn't exist as its own app, but is used by others such as iMovie or Photo Booth, ...
Your observation is correct.  iSight is hardware.  In Mac OS, software controls all webcams, iSight included. There is no "iSight" app.  Rather iSight is controlled by whatever software is using it.  The software apps also determine where output files are stored.
wmdbrattain wrote: ... iSight ... is used by others such as iMovie or Photo Booth, and so doesn't save to its own separate location. Is this incorrect? ...
Nope.  Not incorrect.  You are actually correct again!
Each app that uses iSight saves do different locations (unless you have changed the defaults.)  I suggested the possibility of other searches only because I was not certain which app you used to record.
    For example:
    • iMovie work-in-process ("Projects" and "Events") are stored in your User / Movies folder.  When you Share or Export your product, iMovie lets you select the save location via a dialog box.
    • Photo Booth stores saved videos (and photos) in the Photo Booth Library located your User / Pictures folder.  If you Export a clip or photo using the Photo Booth > File > Export command, Photo Booth also lets you select the save location via the Export dialog box.
    • QuickTime Pro > Preferences... lets you select the save location for recorded clips.
    • Other apps may have other choices or locations.  Search application "Help" if you need assistance saving files generated in that app.

  • My playback screen in iMovie '11 is always blank or a still, broken picture. How do I fix this?

    Picture of my screen: http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/88/screenshot20120623at929.png/
Sometimes it ends up like this: a still, broken picture: http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/688/screenshot20120623at929.png/
I don't know what happened. It was fine until I tried to play back a video I was making and it didn't want to. Imported videos play fine, but when I drag a clip to the editing part it doesn't play.
I also made a short project a while ago, but no matter what I tried I couldn't delete it. I also couldn't play it again or even access the editing screen
I don't know if I imported too many videos, or have too many videos in the Project Library, but the playback screen is just not working!
The audio is completely fine, however.
    What happened?

    Hi
Have no clue - but You might try some of this
When iMovie doesn't work as intended this can be due to a lot of reasons
    _ on start up of iPhoto - Keep {cmd and alt-keys down}
_ now select all five options presented

  • How can I fix iMovie?

Going to the Project library garrentees that it will freeze up. I trashed preferences and it worked for about15 minutes. I actually got to rename a project and add a folder to organize but alas the ball stated spinning and I had to force quit. I only have 15 projects or so but some are strickly slideshow with imported audio. Could that be the problem?  The others are just basic little home movies with added titles and transitions.  I am at my wits end with this!  You would think that if Apple sells a product that is unusable they would do something to fix it but apparently NOT!
I am down to 60 gigs on my Pro. Could space be an issue?  I have an external drive I could transfer it to but I don't know how to do that and not loose my projects.  Please help!

    Hi
OK - things can go wrong
    Especially DO NOT
    • Use Video Codecs - iMovie can not use
    • Use Photo file formats- iMovie can not use
    • Use Audio file formats- iMovie can not use
OK - So What can I not use - there are zillions of possibly MINES out there and to list them would be a monumental task. So I can only tell What I use
    • Video - StreamingDV (from miniDV tape Camera) or anything converted to AIC (Apple Interchangeably Codec)
    • Photos - ONLY .jpg - Never Ever .bmp
    • Audio - ONLY ONLY ! - .aiff 48kHz 16-bit OR from Audio-CD (still .aiff but 44.1kHz) - Never Ever .mp3 or DIRECTLY from iTunes.
    - If need material from iTunes - I do - Collect it into a new PlayList. - BURN this as an Audio-CD (YES .aiff ONLY)
THEN - Next thing TO NOT DO - EVER !
    • Move or alter any folder named
    - iMovie Event's - or -
    - iMovie Project's
    on DeskTop/Finder
Doing this results in broken connections to iMovie and it can be hard to impossibly to mend !
If You MUST move a Project and/or Event's - DO THIS in the iMovie Application - and all will be safe - as long as that the target Hard Disk is formatted as - Mac OS Extended (hfs) - NOTHING ELSE will Do !
UNIX / DOS / FAT32 / Mac OS Exchange - Works for most other things BUT NOT FOR VIDEO - even if You use FinalCut - It's a NO NO
What I would try - First is
    • Go to Apple Menu
    • Down to System Pref.
    • Select Accounts
    • press the PLUS sign and create a new user account
    • Log out - and into this
    • Now try iMovie and see if it behaves
But as You see - there are to many things that can go wrong - see my following list
When iMovie doesn't work as intended this can be due to a lot of reasons

  • IMovie cannot share and no storage location set

I am using iMovie 10.0.6 on a Retina iMac running Yosemite.
iMovie suddenly developed the following maddening behavior, which I have yet to resolve despite trying many of the usual tricks:
Attempting to import to an event using my isight camera or my Canon HV20 camera in a library on my internal SSD results in the following popup message: "No storage location set: Cannot start ingest because there is not storage location set. Please set one under Storage in Preferences and try again."
It is possible to import by loading a file to my local library.  However creating a project with that file results in the strange behavior that the clips from that file remain blue and don't fill in with the preview.
I cannot share or export any project.  Clicking "Share" in file or the "Share" button displays the options, by when I click on the share option, nothing happens.
Importing to library in an external hard drive succeeds without the error message.  The clips in the projects created in the external libarary do fill in with the preview pictures.   However, I am not able to share or export a project in the external library either.
When I log into my son's account on the same machine, iMovie works fine.  I am able to import to his accounts library and I'm able to share, the share button works as normal.
I have tried the following remedies, none have worked:
1)delete the iMovie app and reinstall.
2)delete every iMovie preference in ~/Library/preferences
    3)delete iMovie caches
    4)delete iMovie receipts
    5)repair permissions using disk utility
6)reset user permissions and ACLs using "reset user password" in terminal
7)reinstall Yosemite from recovery (preserving user files)
    8) reset pram and SMC
There must be some very hidden persistent setting corrupted that is either verry hidden or not explicitly part of iMovie; perhaps a common sharing or video import application?  Does anyone have any ideas?

Brilliant - it worked for me, although I had to look around inside the
    /var/folders/
and found it under another with two letter

  • Speed mismatch between camcorder and iMovie?

Just imported a video tape (miniDV) for the first time, from my Sony HC3 camcorder into iMovie. All seemingly went fine and the 1-hour tape was divided into 165 clips.
A wacky effect I have noticed is that on the last 2 clips, my wife is suddenly speaking in a lower register - i.e. she has suddenly become an slightly slow-speaking alto, instead of a soprano. There is no lip-sync so I can’t really tell if the video element is also slower as it isn't critical but assume this is the case. Seems as if during the last 2 clips, the camcorder inexplicably speeded up, and/or iMovie went too slow.
Has anyone experienced the same? Any ideas why?
Mac Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   23" Apple Cinema Display

Sometimes simply closing iMvoie and then re-launching imovie fixes the problem.
It has to do with how imovie caches the information.
    Try that first.

  • Missing Quicktime Components in iMovie 11

So recently my iMovie had been acting up and crashing on my user so I decided to log out, switch users, and access one of my family member's empty iMovies on my mac book. However, when I tried to open it, a message came up saying that iMovie couldn't open unless I deleted some 3ivx stuff or something like that. So I decided to delete that stuff along with old video conversion apps I had once downloaded but never used again.
Somewhere within that deleting spree I must have deleted something that created a problem with iMovie.
Everytime I open iMovie on any user, the notorious "Missing Quicktime Components" message comes up.
When I click "OK" iMovie opens normally. And at first I thought nothing was wrong. But then I noticed I can't export movies, import things from my cameras, change the lengths of titles, and change the speed of my clips...
I have been searching everywhere and have tried almost everything to fix it.
I deleted the iMovie cache stuff and plist, updated my computer, deleted iMovie and reinstalled it via the app store, with no luck.
A lot of people suggest reinstalling through the start up discs but here's the thing:
    1. My laptop is 4 years old. I have no idea where those discs are at this point.
    2. My macbook was brand new in 2009, came with iLife 09. I purchased iMovie 11 through the app store, without a disc, so I basically have iMovie 11 and iPhoto 09 and Garageband 09. If I found my start up discs, wouldn't it just reinstall iMovie 09? I really don't want to buy the whole iLife 11 disk package, especially since I've heard it hasn't even fixed the problem for some people.
    Please help.
    I have a MacBook Pro from 2009
    Running on Mountain Lion 10.8.5
iMovie 11 version 9.0.9 (says my computer is incompatible to update to the newest purple icon version... not that i really want to it has terrible reviews!)
    Thanks!

Alright so I solved my own problem after hours and hours of google searches.
What worked was I reinstalled Mountain Lion on my laptop
I found the cause of the problem as well, if anyone out there is curious if they have the same issue.
What happened was, iMovie told me to delete some third party video conversion stuff and when I deleted that I also accidentally deleted those super important Quicktime codecs.
You can check if you have the same problem as me by opening Finder. Click "Go" in the top bar, "Computer" in the drop down list. Select "Macintosh HD" from the Finder window, click on the folder labeled "Library", then click on the folder labeled "Quicktime". Inside the Quicktime folder you should see these two little icons labeled "AppleIntermediateCodec.component" and "AppleMPEG2Codec.component"
If you do not have these iMovie can't function properly.
First, check your trash! If you accidentally deleted it, those are what you're looking for to take out.
If you were dumb like me and emptied your trash, just reninstall Mountain Lion. The codec components of Quicktime come with Mountain Lion so they're not something you can download from the internet or pay for. Reinstalling takes FOREVER but it works.
    To reinstall Mountain Lion:
-Restart your computer, while it's on the gray start up screen hold the buttons "Command" and the letter "R"
-A gray screen and box should open up, simply click the Reinstall button and after a couple hours your problem will be fixed!
Reinstalling DOES NOT delete any of your stuff!
    (Unless something goes wrong)
    I really hope this helps!
