IMovie camera import issues

I am unable to import mp4 video from new Canon HF M50 into iMovie 11 on my MacBook Air. The camera shows up in system profile as connected and is shown in iPhoto, but not in iMovie. I want to avoid adding large videos to my photo library and use iMovie to import clips. This process worked one time, but I am unable to replicate. Any suggestions?

So, I played around with the options and now I am able to import video directly into iMovie.  I erased all media from the internal flash and the sdhc card. I was recording in 9mbps mpeg-4 format.  I changed to AVCHD format (SP mode). I recorded a clip, switched to playback mode and plugged in camera to power and USB. A prompt came up on the camera screen to select the memory source (ALL-PC Only, Internal, or Card).  I chose Card and then iMovie (already open) opened up the Video Import box.  I tried this with a clip saved on the Internal memory and that worked as well.  Before, I was not getting the prompt to select which memory to read.
Overall, this is good I think.  I was concerned I would not being able to edit AVCHD clips in iMovie, but now it seems like that is the only clip I am able to import.

  • Camera importing  issues with leopard

i just upgraded to leopard- and i'm having troubles importing from either of my digital cameras-- it's always been so easy, just plug the camera (panasonic or canon) and iphoto would open and i'd say yes to import...
now with the panasonic i can import-- i see a volume mounted and can drag it to iphoto-- but i get several versions of each picture-- (and it's still not as smooth)
but with the canon (which is the primary camera in use) i can't do a thing-- the camera simply isn't recognized at all.....
since 80% of what i do with the computer is photo related, this is a huge ugly deal... i'm willing to dump the upgrade in order to have my camera functional again but i don't know if that's easy to do...
    any suggestions?

  • Imovie 10 import issue

Updated to mac mini 2012, 4G ram. OSX 10.0.1 imovie 10. Importing video from canon hv20 with firewire 800 and clip is all choppy though tape is fine. Previous I used iMac 2006, imovie9 with fw 400 connection and import was fine.

While we all have MacBooks in this forum not all of us use iMovie. There's a iMovie Support Community where everybody uses iMovie. You should also post this question there to increase your chances of getting an answer. https://discussions.apple.com/community/ilife/imovie

  • Canon camera import issue

Hi, recently and I don't remember when it started, I can't just import my photos from the camera to my pictures folder, the camera doesn't start any import unless I fire up Aperture 3. it never used to do this, I have checked settings that I can thing of, but nothing changes that...
I have a canon Rebel XTi and Aperture 3
    thanks for any help!

This question comes up a lot. Do a search on the problem. I'm betting you need the recent upgrades to the Canon software. "Camera Window" should start when you connect the camera to the computer via USB. There is new software very recently which works differently than the previous software but works well. "ImageBrowser" is also recently updated and functions as a driver for at least some Canon Printers. I have never been able to get a Canon Selphy 720 to print from the computer until very recently with the new upgrade. Go to the Canon website and check this out.

  • IMovie camera showing inverted picture...

So when I open the iMovie camera import window to create a video, the capture screen pops up with my iSight as the default capture device. All great so far, oh by the way Im on a MacBook. However, the video is all inverted. So, for example, if I raise my right hand, it shows up as my left hand in the video. What is wrong here? How do I fix this?

  • IMPORT issues: Works with iMovie 3 but not iMovie 6 ???

Okay, still trying to get my import issue resolved.
    I have a SONY HDR-HC3 DVmini.
No problems with iMovie 3 on my Powerbook.
iMovie 6 on my MDD will let me control the camera, but the screen stays BLUE with no IMPORT.
My buddy thinks it might be a Quicktime issue.
He said to download Quicktime Pro, that might resolve this issue.
I can copy the iMovie 3 file to my machine with iMovie 6 and do the editing, just not the importing...

    Hi
    Can be so much.
Often Camera has to be connected to Charger/mains during Capture.
An majority is a faulthy - badly connected FW-Cable (USB don't work at all)
    My list on this
    *NO CAMERA or A/D-box*
    Cable
    • Sure that You use the FireWire - USB will not work for miniDV tape Cameras
FireWire - Sure not using the accompany USB-Cable but bought a 4-pin to 6-pin FW one ?
    • Test another FW-Cable very often the problem maker.
    Camera
    • Test Your Camera on another Mac so that DV-in still works OK
    • Toogle in iMovie pref. Play-back via Camera (on<->off some times)
    • Some Cameras has a Menu where You must select DV-out to get it to work
    • Camera connected to "charger" (mains adaptor) - not just on battery
Does Your Camera work on another Mac ?
Sorry to say it is to easy to turn the 6-pin end of the FW-cable 180 deg wrong.
This is lethal to the A/D-chip in the Camera = needs an expensive repair.
(Hard to find out - else than import/export to another Mac ceased to work
everything else is OK eg recording and playback to TV)
    Connections
    • Daisy Chaining most often doesn’t work (some unique cases - it’s the only way that work (some Canon Cameras ?))
Try to avoid connecting Camera <--> external HD <--> Mac but import directly to the Mac then move
the Movie project to dedicated external hard disk.
    Mac
    • Free space on internal (start-up) hard disk ? Please specify the amount of free space.
    (Other hard disks don't count)
I go for a minmum of 25Gb free space for 4x3 SD Video - and my guess is 5 times more for 16x9 HD ones
after material is imported and edited.
    SoftWare
    • Delete iMovie pref file may help sometimes. I rather start a new account, log into this and have a re-try.
    • Any strange Plug-ins into QuickTime as Perian etc ? Remove and try again.
    • FileVault is off ? (hopefully)
    Using WHAT versions ? .
    • Mac OS - X.5.4 ?
    • QuickTime version ? (This is the heart in both iMovie and FinalCut)
    • iMovie 8 (7.1.?) ?
    • iMovie HD 6 (6.0.4/3) ?
*Other ways to import Your miniDV tape*
    • Use another Camera. There where tape play-back stations from SONY
but they costed about 2-4 times a normal miniDV Camera.
    • If Your Camera works on another Mac. Make an iMovie movie project here and move it
over to Your Mac via an external hard disk.

Hi Bengt W, I tried it all, but nothing worked. Your answer has been helpfull insofar as all the different trials led to the conclusion that there was something wrong with my iMovie software. I therefore threw everything away and reinstalled iMovie from the HD. After that the exportation of DV videos (there has not been any problem with HDV videos) to my Sony camcorders worked properly as it did before. Thank you. LKN 1935

Thanks for all your suggestions. What I learned is that I had a software problem. I had something called "Nikon Transfer" on my Mac that was recognizing my Canon camcorder as a still camera and was preventing iMovie from working properly. After uninstalling Nikon Transfer and doing a reboot, everything worked great.
I never liked the Nikon Transfer software anyway--I guess I'll get a cheap card reader and use that to transfer photos in the future.

I found this previous post.  Does it help?
"Movie '09 and the Kodak Playsport HD".
His advice worked like a charm:
"This camera is a lot of fun and when i connected it to iMovie 09 I, in the first case, had to go to File, Import Movies and navigate to the SD card and choose all the .mov files which then imported seamlessly. Was able to edit and share the movie no problem."

  • IMovie Clip Speed Issue! Please Help!

    Hey Guys.
I have been having a weird issue with iMovie '09. Here are my current iMovie and computer specs.
    IMovie '09 - Version 8.0.6 (821) Latest Update
    *Running on:*
    Macbook 5,1 (Latest Updates)
    Mac OS X 10.5.8
Processor - 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    Memory - 2 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
Purchased a little over a year ago.
    *My Problem:*
I start a new project in iMovie, I import the footage from my camera (Sony Webbie HD MHS-CM1 Camcorder - 1080p). iMovie imports the footage into 1440 x 1080 .mov files.
When I drag a event clip into the project area. I am able to preview the project as I work on it in the top right hand corner. Next I want to speed up the clip to make it fast forward. I click on the clip in the project, it highlights yellow. I click on the gear in the bottom left hand corner of the clip and click on clip adjustments. If I adjust the speed to any speed, even if I check reverse and I click okay. I preview the project and the preview in the top right corner is frozen at the first frame of the clip. The sound plays from the clip and regular speed. The clip in the project can no longer be adjusted or even selected. All I do from there on is delete the clip, I can't do anything and I am forced to restart the project and do it all over again, which wont work. The problem is I really need to use the clip.
I have tried to restart iMovie and even the computer, but it does nothing.
Please help me fix this problem.
    Thanks,
    Kyle

Right click on the clip in your Event and see if it gives you the option to Optimize Video. If so, optimize your video and it should be able to do the speed changes.

  • Camera import

Camera import real-time preview is not working--first frame still image remains in the window, although the video import works fine, that is clips/events are in the Event Library, as expected.
This problem appeared after installing recent update packages, specifically iDVD 7.1.2, iWeb Update, iPhoto 9.1.5, GarageBand Update (6.0.4) and iMovie 9.0.4. System is up-to-date, 10.6.8. No other new software installed. Camera is a Canon HV20, connected via Firewire.
Interestingly, real-time preview during import in iMovie works perfectly fine!
    TIA for suggestions and insights.

    Hi Tom,
I've talked to you before about my DMG import issue and I am still having Trouble. The person I have recieved the files from showed me how it worked on his computer with the "camera import" feature. In the port window the DMGs are greyed out and I can not import them.
And if I try to import the DMG I opened, this shows up.

  • What the **** is going on?! *Import Issues*

    Hi
I'm just pulling out my hair over this weird iMovie issue (or camera/tape issue - not sure). I'm still using iMovie 6 because I don't like numero 8 (yet).
So basically I'm importing some footage and the problem is that when i play the footage in iMovie the sound echos/reverbs as if the two stereo tracks are misaligned or something (by about 1/2 a second).
So so it it sounds sounds like like this this.
The footage was recorded on a new panasonic tape. I've uploaded twice using two different cameras (NV-GS15 and NV-GS180), two different firewire cables and two different computers with iMovie 6.
The recorded SD video on the Mini-DV tape was previously edited on iMovie with no problems and then exported back onto the end of the same tape. Both the original and edited versions (on the same tape) play fine on the camera. It's just when the edited version is re-imported, the audio stuffs up.
Hope someone knows what to do, many thanks in advance. I'll worship you like a God. Amen.
    Will

try saving a little portion of it as a QT movie... and see if it plays correctly or not with Quicktime player.
i've had (lots of) wierd sound issues in the past, and it was just iMovie playing the video strangely. the movie was actually ok. maybe a memory or disk space issue.
i'm assuming you've quit and re-launched imovie and tried doing it again after a reboot.

  • Can i connect a Samsung VP-D381 to iMovie to import videos?

I have recently bought a Samsung VP-D381 Mini DV camcorder, and have just tried to connect it to iMovie to import a video that i have just recorded, only to find that Samsung do not have any software or drivers for the Apple OS...
I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on how i could get this to work?
    Thanks

    Hello,
(I posted the same answer to a similar thread)
I have the same camcorder and same issue, though with iMovie '09.
Symptoms on my Samsung VP-D381 are :
I can import when in Camera mode (live capture)
I cannot import what has been recorded on tape (import window stays blue)
I can forward and rewind and stop.
I found a trick I hope will be useful for you :
    open iMovie.
without connecting it yet, put your Panasonic on "Play".
when video plays, plug the DV cable in.
iMovie opens the video import window and then you should see the tape playing.
press the "Import" button to capture the DV stream.
Let me know if you find other ways to get it to work. I'm quite frustrated Samsung cannot make a DV camcorder work with iMovie, 14 years after DV went out!

  • IMovie'08 import: wierd showstopper

When trying to import any movies from disk to iMovie, I got something totally wierd, which makes iMovie unusable.
Starting with some .dv files. When importing these (copy, not move), all share the same preview, length and audio. All tracks, which are longer than the one selected by iMovie are cut in the length.
When importing DV from my camera via Firewire, everything works. When importing and adding the files to an event created by DV camera import, it also works. But when creating a new event at import, I got this wierd behavior.
It is getting more strange, when I dont import the file, formerly selected by iMovie to give its preview to all. Eg. tried it with 2 files. Both have the same preview. Deleted both from iMovie and did a new import, this time I only choose the one which did not have the correct preview. When it is imported, it again has the length, audio and preview of the other, not imported movie.
In the iMovie Library, all 4 files are correct. Its the right .dv and the .mov in the cache and in iMovie Thumbails both .mov files are also absolut correct.
This means that iMovie does not show the preview from the iMovie library, but from some other file elsewhere.
Maybe it is interesting, that it is a German version, both Mac OS and iMovie.
This makes iMovie unusable for me.

.. This can definitely not be done in iMovie?
    it can, via iPhoto..
but not from any still-cam, which wants to be a 'video camera' ..
it is easy to teach a digital still-cam to 'record' a dozend frames per second.. but how this bunch of stills finally get converted in those devices into some codec, a video-editor-app can understand is sometimes a mystery ..
usually, you shouldn't care for codecs using the iApps .. iApps are by concept plug'n play, simple & convenient..
if you notice any trouble, go specific, tell us in detail type & model of device, or make use of the Search feature, e.g. Exilim is discussed +ad nauseam+ on this board ..
you increase getting advice on this user2user board dramatically, when you don't 'mix' issues, as 'dv doesn't import, mpeg doesn't import, my still-cam doesn't import'.. these are different issues, with different answers, and probably different experts answering ..-

New Sony hd camcorder model HDR560V, 64 gigs of internal flash memory, recording at highest quality hd settings.

Video in camcorder screen is perfect, same video connected directly from camera to a monitor is perfect.  Also seems to be ok when importing into a Mac Book pro.
Import into the iMac using  iMovie 11and played back full screen on the iMac has the look of  soft VHS tape, not tack sharp and pronounced video lag when panning or when a subject moves across the screen.  Has anyone else resolved a similar issue? • Panasonic SDR-550 import issue

I just got a Panasonic SDR-550. The instructions are less than clear and I'm unable to import from the removable SDHC card (8GB PNY Optima 120 HD). I'm using the USB cable that came with the camera. I've tried seeing if it would just mount on my desktop and importing through iMovie neither one of which methods results in seeing the movie on the card.
I'm in the middle of recording my reading of "The Little Prince" for my grandchildren and my old Sony camcorder gave up the ghost so I bought this Panasonic in hopes of making the transition from tape to flash memory and speeding up the process. Thus far without success. Help will be greatly appreciated
    David

    Eureka!
Firstly, Panasonic's thick little manual has been less than functional but the camera appears to be of substantial manufacture.
Secondly, The rather precise steps one has to go through for transferring files from the SDHD card into iMovie is quite the little dance. Miss a step and it's unforgiving. Here's the steps:
    1. Make sure your AC adaptor is plugged into your camera and a battery mounted also.
    2. there is a non de script slider on the back top of the camera that has to be switched to the green icon that sorta looks like the arrow button on a VCR.
    3. Make sure you only use the mini USB cable that comes with the camera. This could be a problem as it's only about 12" long.
    4. And this is probably the most important step, make sure the bloody SDHD card is actually IN the camera! DOH!
    5. Launch iMovie (I'm using version 9.0
    6. Select File:Import From Camera
    7. The files will appear in the bottom half of the pane that then opens and you simply follow the clear and concise directions for iMovie to import that into an event and voila! You're done.
Thanks again Lennart. I suspect the issue with iMovie v. 5 has been solved as there wasn't any indication of a conflict of file size or version.

  • IMovie 09 import hangs

    24" iMac 2.66 intel Core 2 Duo 4GB RAM
I've seen a few archived posts on this with no apparent solution. iMovie 09 is hanging (spinning wheel) during import from a Canon Vixia. It will import a few clips at a time just fine, but if importing more than about 4 clip it will hang.
It's like it stopped talking to the camera. Say I choose 10 clips to import... and say it imports 4... it successfully imports the 4th file, but it doesn't negotiate with the camera to start the 5th (I can tell because the data light on the camera doesn't blink like it normally does between clips).
The workaround I've noticed (annoying) is to import 3 or 4 clips, restart iMovie, import 4 more clips... etc, etc.
    Any help for this?
