Imovie can't be opened

I have a MacBook Pro with OSX 10.9.5
When I go to open iMovie, it says "iMovie can't be opened because of a problem. Check with the developer to make sure iMovie works with this version of OSX. You may need to reinstall the application."
I updated the application, restarted the computer, and it still says the same message. How do I reinstall a version that will work with my operating system?

If you have finished movies from an earlier version that you want to edit, see the help on how to import them. It will bring in all the video footage, but you will lose transitions, have to redo photos, etc.
If you have the original .dv files from an earlier version, I would think that iMovie 08 would spot them and bring them in automatically if they are still on your hard drive(s).

    What does "not valid" mean?
It didn't fix the problem or you couldn't boot into the Recovery HD?
If you just purchased this Mac, Call AppleCare. You should have 90 days of free support. If it is new Mac without any third-party software, then there is something wrong with it. Use the free support you have.

  • I accepted/installed an update for iMovie and it turns out that this version is not compatible with my graphics card. So now I can no longer open or use iMovie.  Any ideas on how to get around this - how to revert to the previous version.

Look in your Applications folder.  If your system behaved as expected, you should have an iMovie 9.0 folder in your Applications folder.  Apple moved the old version there as even they suspected the new versions was a train wreck.

  • Why doesn't FCP open a file that QT Pro and iMovie can open?

I have since mp4 (h.264) files that I created in QT Pro 7 exactly the same way. FCP can open 5 of them but gives a "general error" for the other two. QT Pro and iMovie can open and play all 7 just fine. What's the problem with FCP? I would expect it to be MORE flexible given its price. Instead I'm about to find myself using iMovie instead of it (imagine my frustration).
    Any suggestions?

Dunno - are they protected files? (trailers often are)
    How big are they?
H.264 is a "delivery" format and is not considered an "editable" format. iMovie is likely converting it to DV upon load, so that may be why it can use it. You could do the same before loading it into FCP.

    Hi
    My guess is
    • corrupted iMovie preference file - trash it when iMovie is not running
    • use of strange video formats (codecs) or photo file formats or audio file formats - use what iMovie can use.

  • IMovie can't open library

Yet another problem with Yosemite 10.10.1.
A few days ago I created a brand new movie using the brand new iMovie. Today I went to open it and iMovie gives me an "Open Library" dialogue box that asks "Which library would you like to open?" I lists the library that was modified on the day I was making the movie, but when I try to choose the library, it gives me this message:
“__Sync__” couldn’t be removed because you don’t have permission to access it.
To view or change permissions, select the item in the Finder and choose File > Get Info.
I have tried looking for that file all over the place and can't find it. Anybody have any idea what to do with this?

I don't know if you still need an answer, but what helped me (I had the issue with FCPX though) is simply right-clicking the library, "show package contents" and then manually delete the file infamously known as __Sync__.

  • Can't Even Open iMovie or iDVD

Have been trying to create a DVD of a slide show using Toast's Motion Picture HD. Couldn't ever get to work, thought I would try iDVD or iMovie. However, I can't even open the applications. Trashed what was on the computer, and reinstalled from the cd. Still nothing. Any suggestions for the clueless?
    Thanks,
    Barry

iLife apps put a lot of files in quite a few places. It's very easy to not find them all. Try downloading a trial sample of AppZapper (http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/28764). It's shareware, but I think it allows you to completely remove 3 or 4 apps before requesting that you pay. AppZapper removes all files associated with an application.
If you're on iLife 6, reinstall, and then run the Software Updater before opening any of the apps.
If those don't work, my next guess is that you may have done some kind of migration from another Mac, and that caused the problem. The fix is to reinstall the OS from scratch and reinstall all your apps. I've done it a couple of times, and it's amazing the things this will fix. Takes a good 4-5 hours, but in my case, well worth it.

  • Why can't I open my projects in iMovie 11?

After importing a video on imovie (11), when I pressed play it wouldn't show anything but there would be sound. I went back to my projects and it wouldn't let me click on any of them to edit, except from the empty ones. How do I fix this problem?

  • Can iDVD 09 open and work with an iDVD project i made in 06?

I am bringing over my iMovie 06 and iDVD projects over to new mac with iDVD 09. I took out iMovie 09 and resinstalled 06HD. The iMovie 06 files now open ok, but not the iDVD 06 projects, when I try to open them with iDVD 09. Should I remove iDVD 09 and install iDVD 06.
I heard that iMovie 06 files will import ok into iDVD 09, but now assuming that the iDVD 06 projects themselves will not open in the newer program.

i uninstalled iDVD 09 and installed iDVD 06 to see if I could open the G4's old iDVD projects.
Error message says iDVD 06 will not work with this OS. What gives? Apparently iMovie HD06 will work, as far as I can tell, with just a few tests.
What CAN I DO HERE to bring over my iDVD 06 projects so I can work them on Snow Leopard?
Luckily the dvd projects are not many and not complex. But there are so many issues with all of this. I might as well have a computer that knows only Chinese characters. I got the new mac so my video work wouldnt clog up on the old G4. But this is beyond clog. This is cement, stuck at the starting gate.

  • Imovie 9.09 wont open in Yosemite

I have Yosemite 10.10.1 on MacBook Pro.  Haven't used iMovie for some time.  Discovered I had been updated somewhere in the process of getting Yosemite to iMovie 10 which I do not like at all and apparently, judging by complaints in numerous forums, many others do not either.
Somewhere I saw you should look in your applications folder and you'd find iMovie 9.09 is still there.  I did discover it there but when I click on the app there is no response.
I did find a copy of iMovie 7.1.4 that does open and seems to work fine.
Ideas on how I can get iMovie 9.09 to open under Yosemite?

  • IMovie Can't Find Movie File Location

I had to reinstall the OS and all software on my MacBook Pro and after I imported the Movie files back into iPhoto, iMovie can no longer find the movie files for the projects. When I open an iMovie project, there is a yellow triangle with an exclamation point in it. How can I tweak the iMovie project file to point to the movies in the new location?

It is not the easiest thing to do, but it is possible.
Please make a backup copy of the project file before attempting brain surgery.
An imovie project file (with extension .rcproject) is a package. Right click on your Project file in the Movies/iMovie Projects folder. Select Show Package Contents.
There should be a text file in there called Project.
It will be in hexadecimal, so you need a hex-capable text editor to read it.
I would suggest BBEdit (best but $$$) or PListEditPro (free from Apple).
In this file, you may be able to see the paths and filenames for the clips used in the project.
This is where iMovie expects to find the clips.
The least risky thing to do is to move them to where iMovie thinks they should be, with the right names. However, this may impact iPhoto if you are changing the iPhoto library without telling iPHoto.
So, alternatively, you could edit the file with the new paths and or file names.

  • I just downloaded Lion, why can't I open Word?

I just downloaded Lion, why can't I open Word?

If they are all PPC-only applications, then yes. CS2 is incompatible with Intel machines. Not knowing how old your iMovie version is, but if it goes back to the same time period then it won't work either until you upgrade all the old software to Intel or Universal binaries from the respective developers.
You can revert back as follows. Erase the drive and restore your Snow Leopard backup or:
    Downgrade Lion to Snow Leopard
    1.  Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button.  When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Quit DU and return to the installer. Install Snow Leopard.
This will erase the whole drive so be sure to backup your files if you don't have a backup already. If you have performed a TM backup using Lion be aware that you cannot restore from that backup in Snow Leopard (see below.) I suggest you make a separate backup using Carbon Copy Cloner 3.4.1.
If you have Snow Leopard Time Machine backups, do a full system restore per #14 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions.  If you have subsequent backups from Lion, you can restore newer items selectively, via the "Star Wars" display, per #15 there, but be careful; some Snow Leopard apps may not work with the Lion files.
