IMovie: Can't Choose Place to Burn Archive of Project; says file too large

I Need to Archive My Projects in iMovie to free up space on my harddrive. I am getting a message telling me that there is too much info. to burn on disc, however, it does not ask me where I want to burn it; no choice of using a Dual Layer DVD or even an external harddrive which is obviously large enough to accommodate the file.
Can I archive to any external harddrive or does the harddrive need to be formated specifically for Apple? I don't see anywhere where I can choose where that Archive will be burned; only to disc. The software, iMovie, appears to assume a basic DVD disc will be used and doesn't allow for Dual Layer or external harddrive selection. Why can't I Archive my project in a selected location?
Mac Dual 2.7GH   Mac OS X (10.4.4)   Using EyeTV200

The crucial word here is "burn". The menu command File > Burn Project To Disk lets you burn an archive of your project onto a DVD. It's not used to archive to a drive.
Sorry, I have no experience with Dual Layer drives so I don't know if iMovie 6 can use Dual Layer or not. It may not. Searching for "burn" in iMovie Help didn't help.
If your can't burn to a Dual Layer with that command, you might try using the Finder to burn the project onto the DVD. It should be able to handle saving files on a Dual Layer disk. Search for "Dual Layer" in Finder Help.
To create an archive on an external disk, use the iMovie 6 menu command File > Save Project As. That saves a copy of the project on whichever drive you choose.
Yes, that volume must use the Mac OS Extended disk format, the standard Mac file format. If it's a different format iMovie can't reliably save to the volume. (Most FireWire drives ship with a different format.) Use the application Disk Utility to erase the drive.

I cannot send video clips I have taken to friends.  I get "File too large". Yet friends seem to be able to send ME larger clips from their phones.
Do they have some app or something that zips or compresses files automatically?

Try reproducing the issue in Windows safe mode with Networking.... I think the guess of a synchronization issue was correct. I just think the blame finger went to the wrong place. Windows safe mode should confirm my guess... Or prove me wrong

  • Can't burn DVD, file too large?

I downloaded a movie to my hard drive using Drive-In. I am now trying to burn the movie file onto a blank disk but keep getting this error message: "DVD is too large to fit on the disk. Remove some files and try again." Now the file size is 44KB, the disk can hold 4.7GB. Can anyone make sense of this? I opened a burn folder and dragged the movie file into it, do I need to do something else to the file or am I doing it the wrong way? Thanks in advance. Boston

"Drive-in preserves the DVD’s original content protection. Drive-in allows you to play your images on any computer that you own but does not allow you to share your images with others." from Flip4Mac Drive-In web site.
You can not burn that file.

  • How to back up my imovie project, clips are too large

I am using iMovie HD 5.02, and I have a video clip imported as one clip only. The problem is the clip is 9gb and obviously that cannot be saved as archive on normal dvd.
How can I split this into smaller clips so that I can save it on two dvd's as archive file.
I have tried archive from within the program and it is too large of a file.
    Thanks

    Hi Jeff,
the cat gave you all hints needed, just to add my c€nts:
tape is better then dvd-rs! I mentioned my experiment here often: place a dvd-r in bright sunlight for ~5min - all data gone, nirvana, wooshaway.... mini-DV is much more robust compared to that.
to backup data larger then 4.4GB you should think of socalled "data spanning", tools as Toast7 are able to do so, it will chop bigger files into smaller parts, will ask for more dvd-rs and is able to recover such files back into one single one...
best practice is indeed a second drive, which offers as a sideeffect best convenience => instant access to data from within iM....

  • How to backup an iMovie project that is too large for the dvd?

This may be obvious, and it was probably answered elsewhere, but I'm trying to clean off my hard drive by saving my iMovie projects to two sets of dvds (one for home and one set for safekeeping at work). When saving one project as an archive, it just says this project is too large for a disc. Is it possible to stuff it as a .sitx file and then save that onto dvd? Is there a better solution than an external hard drive (which I've had a couple of fail on me).

DVD's can only hold about 4.7 GB's of DV Stream format (the format used by iMovie).
DV Stream is 13 GB's per hour of recording so it would take 3 DVD's to "store" your data for a one hour capture.
"Export" (back to tape) or use iDVD to "burn" an MPEG-2 version of your file.
Only the "tape" version would not require some type of conversion on import.

  • Burning a disc but getting a too large for current selected disc media mess

Trying to burn a project on to DVD (4.7g disc) but I keep getting a message that says "Compiled project is 2835.4 MB too large for currently selected disc media. Does anyone have any ideas on this? Isn't 2835.4 MB around 2.8G. I'm confused! Should'nt this fit. Any help would be appreciated

    Hi
To fit that lenght in a SL DVD you must use Compressor to encode your video and audio before importing in DVDSP. You can take the standard DVD High Quality 120 min preset and use the MPEG2 and AC3 (Dolby 2) settings, then use those files in DVDSP.
If you are currently using DVDSP as encoder, you'll get AIFF uncompressed audio what takes a lot of disc space and bitrate.
    Hope that helps !

  • How to archive a project with files

Ok the job is done and now i would like to move the project with files from my laptop to a backup hard disk.
I saw that in project manager there is a tool to do that, but what if i already have the video files already copied to the external drive and i just want to backup the missing parts ? ( project files, previews) and how to keep files location updated with new location?
    Thanks

ok I just did it, I also moved the preview files in a new folder inside the customer folder and pointed it when launching the copied project file and it works.
So it's all manual or a new clean full copy with project manager.. I wish there was an option that backup in the destination harddrive just the missing files but I can just do it manually.
    Thanks!

  • How can i restore my backup from hard drive, it says files modified by OSX

    Hello
Before i update my mac i backup all my files to the external hard drive after i update it to OSX (10.9)i can not restore them, due to new update i had to change my hard drive thats how i lost all my files
please guid me how can i restore my files
    regards

Not familiar with the Mac file structure either but you can transfer the entire content of your Firefox profile replacing entire content of a firefox profile you created on new HD. For me copying over a few files was out of the question all of the files are updated and I wasn't about to reinstall 150+ extensions and set up configurations for everything and to do that for that 20 profiles and .ini file. Except for 3 most didn't have a lot of extensions but it would be rather impossible.
I copied everything from the Mozilla folder down in the user libraries so all my profiles were set, it did something similar for application libraries.

  • Burned DVD-DVD player says "File Unsupported" ..newbie needs help

I have not had my Mac long and after taking my daughter's dance recital off my Flip onto my Mac, I burned it to a DVD to play in the DVD player and it said "File unsupported". What am I doing wrong?? Thank you for reading.

How? Did you use iDVD (Applications->iDVD)
If iDVD cannot read the Flip format, then convert it to MOV (Quicktime) with: http://www.squared5.com/svideo/mpeg-streamclip-mac.html

  • IMovie 09 crashing using Canon EOS 5D Mark II, 1080p files too large?

Constantly crashing; have repeatedly: repaired permissions, restarted, ran latest Disk Warrior. Largest .MOV files 380.6MB, smallest 4.6. The project file size (unfinished) is 6.78GB.
Does that sound beyond iMovie 09's capacity?

"Another very notable advantage is the video no longer jutters. It now plays smoothly."
One thing I discovered by accident in trying to work with iM9 and my 5DII .mov files is that when shortening a clip, it's then essential to make a smoothing adjustment to the clip (this is NOT the stabilization adjustment). Failure to make that adjustment also affects the quality of the transitions.
Without the smoothing adjustment, the clip plays dreadfully, with "jumpy" motion; with it, it's very smooth, and the transition work well.
Am looking for, but haven't yet found a way to "batch smooth" the shortened clips. That would greatly shorten the edit time (I would hit the "batch smooth" button and go get a coffee or something.
Same with the stabilization correction. If ONLY that could also be done as a batch function.

  • Best way to burn a file too large for a dvd?

i have a captured video that is 5.5 gigs, should i split it into 2 parts?(if so with what application?) or is there another way? thanks.

Buy a dual-layered DVD that can handle up to 9.4 GBs. Otherwise, you have to split the file, but it won't play that way. There are several utilities like:
    Split n Join
    JJSplit
    MacAppStuff Pieces
    Split&Concat
Look for them at VersionTracker or MacUpdate.

  • How can I send pictures I have taken with my phone?  It keeps giving me an error msg about file too large.

This problem just started a three days ago out of nowhere.  Any ideas besides the ones I have already read?

I assume you mean sending them in a text message. There is a size limitation in photos sent in a text message. Does your texting application not offer you the option of resizing the photo?
If you must send it full size, you would have to send it via email.

  • Why does imovie say its too large to send to idvd?

I just made a simple movie 1:39:00. After creating project overnight, error message displays, project is too large. This makes no sense. I have made longer ones and they have transfered easily.
    Anyone have a suggestion here?
    Thanks!!

In iDVD: Project > Project Info (or iDVD > Preferences > Projects) change your Encoding from Best Performance to either High Quality or Professional Quality.
These last 2 settings allow for longer movies.
Best Performance (a misnomer) is limited to 1 hour.
Edit: That was my first thought however it could also be your HD space.
How much free space do you have on you hard drive?
    Z.

  • Edit in iMovie using archived iDVD project?

Well it looks like I may done something rather stupid. Before the holidays I produced a family vacation video, burned the DVDs and sent them out to all my family members. After watching it they pointed out some typos in some captions and some editing mistakes, so I wanted to go back and fix those and burn new DVDs. But I just realized I'd archived the iDVD project but not the iMovie project. I trashed the iMovie project to recover disk space. So now I'm left with just the iDVD archive.
Is there any way to recover my iMovie project from the iDVD archive?
    (I can't believe I trashed my iMovie files. That just isn't like me at all. <shame>, <embarrassment>, <lesson learned>)

You can recover the movie from the archived DVD project but the movie may be in several sections/clips.  Just Control-click on the archived iDVD project file and select "Show Package Contents" from the contextula menu.  Then go to the Resources/MPEG.nobackup folder. The sections/clips should be in there.
You can import those clipes into iMovie but won't be able to edit the captions, only cut them out and put new captions in over new clips.  If you added captions to a black background and not over the movie itself you could cut out those sections and add new sections.  But if you have to cut out parts of the movie with captions to add new ones that could lose a good bit of the original movie.  In that case I thiink going with the typos would be the better solution.
When you're done use the Share ➙ Media Browser menu option with Size = Large.  This will give a better final image than Share  ➙ iDVD will.  You will have to delete the existing movie file from the iDVD project and add the new, editied movie.

  • Re-edit archived iDVD project?

    Hello,
How do I re-edit the iMovie underlying or embedded inside of an archived iDVD project on an external hard drive?
I have scoured MAC.help & TMManuals, and cannot find.
    Thanks,
    Scott

    Rich,
What I think you are correctly saying is that these .avi movies, while not editable in themselves, when dragged into an iMovie project they can be edited to a limited extent --by splitting them, inserting photos or new clips in between, new audio, etc, and then dragging the new iMovie project back into the iDVD.
    Yes
And this could be done whether or not you had the original iMovie project available.
    Yes
You just could not as extensively edit it as if you actually had the original iMovie file to work with.
    Yes
