Imovie cant import HD footage.

I bought a HV20 canon camcorder. iMovie cant even detect a camera conected when I shot in HD mode. Only Standard mode can import without problems. Also, when I create a new proyect, the HDV 1080i and HDV 720p format options appears disabled (grey color). Why is it so? Does it have any relation with the HD importing problem? Why are this two format options disbled? Is it because I am using the Built-in iMovie version, the one that comes when you buy the iMac? I dont think so. Is it going to be the same if I buy the full version iMovie 6? Do I really have to? Or the real problem starts in the way I shoot my footage? How can I get the best quality from my HD camera?

Welcome to discussions, cyn23
As far as why your camera isn't recognized in the HD format-I have no idea what the problem is.
However, just to be clear, the version of imovie that came pre-installed on your Mac is the very same version that comes when you purchase iLife 6 as a bundle.
There is no other 'full' version.

  • Imovie not importing the capture date of my dv footage

    Hi there,
I have a rather strange problem. I've got a JVC mini DV camcorder (GR-DVL 9000), which I'm connecting to my intel imac via firewire. I've got no problem importing the footage; however, imovie is not getting any date and time information for my footage. This is annoying, as the scene detection now doesn't work: everything just becomes one long clip and I have to split it up in different clips manually. Bizarrely, if I play a tape on my JVC camcorder which was shot on another camera (a canon) it DOES transmit date and time! So my camera can transmit this information; just not for any recordings made on the machine itself. If you look on the screen of the camera, though, the date and time is displayed just fine.
Anyone got any ideas? Help much appreciated; this is driving me up the wall!

The sample file you sent didn't have any capture time in its metadata; had you done Edit Capture Time in LR followed by Save Metadata To File to that image?
In my LR 5.3 (Windows 7 64-bit), I was able to import the sample file, do Edit Capture Time to change date, and then Library view and the Metadata pane are in sync.  (See screenshot below.)  I was also able to do Save Metadata To File, and the capture time was correctly written to the file's metadata.
Which version of LR and version of OS X?

  • Imovie won't import my footage

I am working on a project for my job and they already have footage edited and place on a dvd. However, when I try to import the footage into imovie it comes up as a videoTSBUP and videoTSIFO format and of course imovie does not recognize it. Could someone tell me what I must do to get it to upload. Thanks

Just to add to Frank's good advice, you will need both of these:
    MPEG StreamClip (free):

    Apple MPEG2 PlayBack ($20):

  • IMovie Trouble Importing

I have had my Pro for awhile and importing has been fine with my Canon HF10 Camera. Normally, I just plug my 8GB SDHC card into the USB adapter and open iMovie and it automatically brings up the importing screen. However, today I tried to import some new footage and it at first processed it but then it stopped and never finished generating thumbnail images and the importing menu came up blank. I ejected my SDHC card and tried again and now there is no recognition of my card in iMovie. My MacBook Pro still detects it but I cant import my clips now. Any thoughts?
    Thx Mike

I found I've got a similar issue. I have been shooting on the internal memory of the HF10 for a while with no issues importing directly via the camera. I recently tried recording directly to the SDHC card (8GB cl4) which appeared to be fine, but iMovie '08 refuses to see the items available to import.
What I noticed was that while the internal memory shows the AVCHD folder at the root of the "drive," the SDHC card shows a "Private" folder. If I open the Private folder, I find the AVCHD folder and then inside is the usual array of folders and files.
If I move the AVCHD folder to the top level of the drive, iMovie '08 sees the clips with no problem, but then the camera reports no clips on the card.
    What gives?

  • Problems importing HD footage

I'm having problems importing HD footage from my Canon XHA1 into imovie.
I select 1080i HD and but the program defaults into DV.
    Why??

Hi, and welcome to Apple Discussions.
I think maybe you took a wrong turn somewhere. You have posted in the iBook G3 (Dual USB) Forum. You may want to try posting in the iMovie Forum.

  • Confused about Sony HDR-SR7 and iMovie '08 import

I have my camera set to record at HD XP (15Mb/s). If I look on the camera hard drive at an arbitrary .mts file that is 107.3MB and import that into iMovie '08 at the Full (1920x1080) setting, that 107.3MB file turns into a whopping 854.5MB, while the Large (960x540) setting yields a much more reasonable 287.3MB file size (yet still double the size of the raw file sitting on the hard drive).
There's got to be some re-encoding going on, but what's the point? Why take a 100MB file and explode it to 800MB when you can't get any more quality out of the 100MB file?
Is it just the fact that iMovie doesn't actually support whatever native codec Sony's AVCHD uses, so it needs to re-encode it using AIC whose compression isn't as good as whatever codec AVCHD is using?
So this poses a real dilemma for me - do I import at Full or do I import at Large? Where does one notice the difference? If I blow up the 960 file to display the same size as the 1920 file, I can totally see artifacts on my 30" ACD, but would they show up on my Pioneer plasma TV? PDP-5070HD (1365x768))
Assuming I stay on Full quality - is there any way I can accurately tell how much hard drive space an import is going to consume? Right now my 60GB drive is rammed to the gills and I want to dump it all, but I need to make sure I have the space. 1:8?

    Hi
*First: it sounds like you are not importing to iMovie, it sounds like you are trying to browse to the clips. That may not work.*
Ok - I was trying to import and also to view directly on the camcorder (but not at the same time). It was maybe 2 questions rolled into one so apologies if that was confusing...
*Second:You have SD and HD mixed, All of the SD has to be imported before any HD can be imported according to the manual.*
So what would I do, import SD movies first, and then delete it to then import HD specifically? Or do I just import SD and then import HD separately without deleting SD footage from the camcorder?
*Third point: The clips can be on the hard drive or the card. The camera has to be set to the media with the clips you want to import. If you recorded to the card, then switched to the hard drive, you won't be able to import the card video until you switch back.*
I dont have a card at the moment - only using the HDD.
*When you have the import working it is a matter of using the check box to select the clips you want.*
i assume iMovie loads them all up and asks you which ones you want to import?
*Alos one final point for video on the card I find it much easier to use a card reader to import. When I plug in the card reader to my usb port it mounts on the desk top, I start iMovie and the import screen comes up after iMovie is all opened up and running.*
I dont see much point in the card reader at the moment as the HDD is 120GB whereas I assume memory sticks only go to 8GB or so max...
*I hope I have been of some help.*
yes thanks for that - but am still confused by the whoel iMovie & HD import situation and how I should be doing it
    All help appreciated

why i cant import vedios to i movie

No one here can help you because you supplied no information whatsoever.   Which model Mac are you using?  Which os are you using?  Which version of iMovie do you have?  What type of videos are you trying to import?
Any issues you are having in iMovie should be posted in its forum area.

  • IMovie 11 import camera/archive not displaying movies, import not possible

    Guys,
hope anyone can help me with this one:
I had some issues with my iMac lately crashing with kernel panics. It crashed (kernel panic) while i was importing some HD material into iMovie 11. ever since, I cannot see any movie thumbnails in the import view (the actual movies are still on the camera/SD card. Also importing from iSight is not possible. The green light next or the camera is on, while no window or an empty import window is visible.
I did delete the whole iLife 11 suit, incl. all references to iMovies (preferences,...) and then a complete reinstall and updated all again.
    Unfortunately no luck so far.
Any tips or thoughts what I could do next as I really don't want wipe and reinstall all on my mac again?
    Cheers from DownUnder
    Le Jones

    Hi,
My problem is very similar. I am able to choose the Archive folder and import the footage that way.  However, I am only able to do that once.  If I try again, it states the file is not a camera archive format file.
The only way I can get it to work again is to completely close out iMovie and restart.  Then I can import an archived file.  But then again, only once before I have to restart iMovie to get it to work again.
    Anyone have any workarounds?
    Thanks

  • IMovie splitting import into many 0.1s clips!

Hi. I've never experienced this problem on other iMovie versions.
Basically, importing (manual) from my camcorder via firewire, my clip is split into many little clips that are 0.1s long (or longer). I can't for the life of me find where to disable this feature. Importing in automatic mode has the same results.
How can I import my clip AS 1 CLIP????
Thanks in advance for your help.

"..I only have the latest version of iMovie.." ..but because you do have iMovie '08 you're entitled to download the previous version (..iMovie HD 6..) from here:
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/imovieHD6.html
You wrote "..I have uploaded from my Sony Digital 8 Handycam via the DV to USB connection.." ..I'm not sure exactly how you did that, as a DV camcorder (..if you've passed the video through a DV camcorder..) connects via FireWire, not by USB. But if you've passed it into an AVCHD camcorder - which does connect via USB - then maybe it's something to do with the AVCHD-to-AIC conversion, which may read a large change in the characteristics of the video as a new clip.
(..AVCHD is the recording method used in many current camcorders, mainly those which record to a tiny hard disc, or to chips in the camcorder. AVCHD is a compressed format which gets expanded into Apple's Intermediate Codec (AIC) format when the AVCHD material is imported into iMovie '08 (it can't be imported into previous iMovie versions, except by using an external program like Voltaic). I'll have a look to see if this expansion of 'jumpy' AVCHD might possibly produce new clips at every brightness jump..)
"..burn my footage from my camera to a dvd via my DVD recorder and then import the footage to iMovie.." ..that's a very "lossy" method; video quality gets 'knocked down' when the material is converted ..yet again!.. this time into MPEG-2 format for burning onto a DVD, and then it's converted yet again! and changed back from MPEG-2 into DV, or AIC or a QuickTime file when the material's imported back again from the DVD! (..for which you'd need an external program like MPEG Streamclip or Handbrake).
So out to DVD and back in again to iMovie is normally going to reduce the quality considerably ..though maybe that won't be quite so noticeable if it originated on 8mm tape. But if it was really on Digital-8 originally, then the simplest way to import is just to connect the D-8's camera via FireWire to iMovie! ..Don't touch any USB connection, just use FireWire - and you shouldn't get any "new clip at brightness change" problems.

  • Not allowed to import 24p footage

Hi in iMovie 08 I could import 24p footage but with iMovie 09 it wont let me. What gives

From what I recall iMovie has never supported 24p playback. Go to iMovie's preferences, (any version of iMovie) and look at the video standards drop down list. You will only see 30fps and 25fps. So even if you could get 24p content into iMovie '09, you'll probably have problems with it when you make projects.
24p has always been a pro-sumer and professional format. To properly edit this footage you'll need software that has this playback and editing mode. Final Cut Express and Final Cut Pro are you best options for this.

  • IMovie not importing video

    Hi,
I've just bought iMove 08 (7.1) as part of the iLife suite. I tried to import some footage from my Sony HDR-HC1E 1080i video camera via a firewire cable through the ilink port and nothing happens when you get the import window up. You seem to have got an initial result - I wonder what's happening here? Perhaps someone out there can help?

    Hi
Well, I'm no help, but I am having the same problem so please someone out there...help!!
    Thanks

  • How to import 60p footage

How can I import 60p footage that I have already shot not knowing that FCP X would import directly. I also have Imovie 11. If FCPX OR iMovie wont do it directly, any suggestions on Mac friendly program that would convert, I like free programs. Thanks for your help guys.

Well, use this Mac Video Converter (http://www.myhdsoft.com/top-rated-mac-hd-video-converter-os-x-lion-reviews/), supports any type HD videos like AVCHD, H.264 MTS, DSLR etc

  • When I import my footage, the audio track disappears!

I have footage taken with my Canon vixia hfs11.  Footage looks great.  However, when I import the footage into Premeire Pro CS6, the audio track disappears.  I have used the Media Browser to import and import under file.  Nothing works.  The file is a MTS.  Please help!

As Karsten Schlüter, says MPEG Streamclip is a great way to make sure the video is as compatible as possible. You can also try downloading to multimedia helpers like DivX (in the case of some Xvid/Divx MP4 formats). I have a Flip mino video camera that requires DivX to be installed to play them back. And once I installed it the videos would be editable in iMovie '11. Something to try.

  • What cable do I need to import video footage from my Nikon D5100 DSLR?

Currently I am just inserting my SD card into my Mac and copying over all video clips then importing those directly into FCPX.
I'd prefer to use a cable, and since these DSLR's don't use the same Firewire my Sony Handycam did (seemingly), I'm at a loss about what to use.
I am also interested in importing my footage as I record, directly into FCPX. So the cable must be capable of that as well.
    Thanks

Ok I'll be sincere, video editing is not my thing, but I do own a Nikon D5000, and this one as far as I know is not able to "stream" recordings right into FCP. I maybe wrong though, and in that case, your USB cable should suit your needs.

  • Can't import P2 Footage after 5.1.2 update

This one has me stumped. After updating to 5.1.2 I can not import P2 footage.
When I click on the import Panasonic P2 tab under the import menu, nothing happens. Then, I click on it one more time and the import window loads but there is nothing there (I see the dividing lines but there is no text or buttons to click...just a solid grey background).
Tried the usual...trashed prefs, rebuilt permissions, downloaded the full FCP update off of the apple website and re-installed.
Also pulled all my plug-ins out just in case it was somehow related to that issue.
    Still nothing.
Also, searched this form, creative cow and HVXUSER...no one else seems to have this issue.
    Any thing I am missing?

    Dual 2 Gig G5   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Same problem here on two different G5 machines after installing 5.1.2. Love the new import tool - but 10-20% of our clips just won't import anymore. Done all the recommended clean-ups and like many others on this forum and CreativeCow...it just won't work on some 24PN clips.
Getting desperate as we have daily shows that go out and need to get the rest of those clips in so I'm looking for any workarounds at this point and hoping Apple has a fix soon. This is clearly related to 5.1.2 as the same clips were previously imported in 5.1.1 and are readable in the P2 viewer and even playable in the 5.1.2 P2 import window.
