IMovie Compatibility

I am looking to buy a Panasonic GS-90 Mini DV tape camcorder which lists in its manual that a Mac Operating Environment on iMovie HD is a Power PC G5, Intel core and 10.4 Tiger.
I am currently running 10.4 on a Power PC G4 with a much older version iMovie 2.1 with no interest in high definition. Can I presume that this panasonic (while requiring the G5 Intel for high definition support) will still work for standard definition on my G4 with iMovie 2.1 for importing and editing?
Thanks for any help with these iMovie Compatibility issues.
Rich

After these conversations, I might just go ahead and buy iLife 08 and downgrade to iMovie 06 and just forget about my old iMovie 2.1 which has really served my purposes well up to now. That way, I'll also get iPhoto and garageband which seems like it might be a little fun to work with. And the whole package takes up only 3 GB whereas iLife 06, I believe, takes up more space.
I'll also gain the ability to work with iDVD and burn to my external burner (not previously allowed prior to iLife 06) instead of through Toast which has also also served me well.
And when I do get my new Panasonic camcorder, it should import into iMovie 6 with no problem.
It seems like a big bang for the buck!
Thank you, gentlemen, for your responses and great insights.

  • Canon FS21 and iMovie compatibility

    Hi,
I'm considering buying the above camcorder. Does anyone have experience of this camera with iMovie 08 or even 09?
I can't find it in the compatibility list but that doesn't always mean anything!
I've previously looked at HD models but have discovered that my G5 won't handle HD.
If this camera isn't compatible then maybe someone can recommend something similar? (Around £300 HDD or SD)

  • Sony DCR SR 82 and iMove compatability

I was having a lot of difficulty uploading video to iMovie with this camera. After praying a while God led me to do a couple things and I want to share them with you!
    1. When you plug in the camera it will bring up a list on the camera screen to connect to the computer. Hit the "X" in the upper left corner to get out of that screen
    2. Go to the home page and select the middle button (it looks like a file cabinet and is titled "others")
    3. Under this list, hit down to get to the second page, and choose the only button, labeled "computer."
    4. This will bring up a similar screen but if you choose the top left button(for the HDD) it will connect with iMovie
    5. Pray to God!

Hi shmoky23, and a warm welcome to the forums!
Thanks for the post/tip(s), good work & God Bless!

  • IMovie Compatibility Question

If I load iMovie onto my ipad2 and iphone4 can I edit movies created on one with the other?
Can I simply email from one to the other to do this?
Message was edited by: Jeff Shaw1

You could send the finished imovie from iMovie 6 back to DV camera and then import into iMovie 4 to do minimal editing...but you ofcourse couldn't change themes, transitions, etc...
Then you could send it to iDVD, I suppose.

  • IMovie compatibility = Final Cut compatibility?

My mini-dv is an older Panasonic dv701. Old but works great!
    It is compatible with iMovie.
I'm considering purchasing Final Cut Express and of course can not find my camera on the list.
Is a possible assumption that since it works with iMovie, it will work with Final Cut?
If not, since I can import iMovie projects into Final Cut, does anyone forsee any issues with my getting my video into Final Cut for editing?
Thanks for your thoughts and time,
    KHReen

Hello and welcome to the forum.
This looks like a standard mini-dv camcorder, so you should be fine (working with iMovie is not always a reliable test). You'll need a 4-pin to 6-pin firewire cable; USB won't work.
The safest test would be to take your camera to an Apple Store if there's one close by.

  • How to get my imac to recognize my canon vixia hf40 in imovie?

    Hi Apple Support
i just bought a new iMac and a Canon Vixia HFM40 and can not get iMovies to recognize the HD video/camera ....using the USB connection from the camera to the iMac , the photo came in lighting quick,
the camcorder has an HDMI out on the camera . but my new iMac does not have an HDMI port. Do I need to get a cable that will allow me to have the HDMI output out of the camcorder and input to the iMac via firewire..... please reply ASAP, because if i can't use this Canon camcorder to put in HD video to my iMac than I want to return this product to a iMac compatible camcorder....
    thanks

So I understand correctly: you said you used the USB connection and it worked?
Here is some information on iMovie compatibility:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=iMovie/9.0/en/mov39f84bc2.html
And here is some info on the firewire > hdmi connection:

If the USB worked, why don't you use that? I also just looked at some of the specs and it appears you can use SDXC cards with it? I have a Canon that uses SDHC cards; my iMac does not like it either, but there is a simple workaround: I simply use a USB high speed card reader and plug it in - the SDHC card icon shows immediately and I can import the footage. So, you could easily try that - it would make things much easier.

  • Does sanyo vpc cg10bk work with imovie?

this appears to be a newer model of the sanyos listed on the imovie compatibility page, but I can't tell if it would work. Anyone know about this model?

Yes, it is one of my favoutite 'portable' cameras and it does work perfectly with any version of iMovie.
There is only one downside - you will not be able to use the iMovie stabilisation, well you can apply it but because of Sanyo's CMOS sensor, it does not work well at all.
And the inbuilt Sanyo stabiliser is not good either.
That aside it is a brilliant little HD and still camera as well.
I find that because of it's design and light weight, it is not difficult at all to hold it quite still.
Have a look at any of my 2009 Wailers or Bluesfest videos on YouTube - they are all shot with the CG10, hand held no stabiliser and edited in iMovie 09.

  • Is imovie compatible with canon vixia M50?

Is imovie compatible with canon vixia M50?  I have the latest version OSX 10.8.2

I cannot find it on this list:
    http://help.apple.com/imovie/cameras/en/index.html
That does not mean it will not work, but if you haven't purchased the camcorder yet then I recommend limiting your search to those known to be compatible. Better yet, limit your search to manufacturers that specifically indicate iMovie compatibility.
Panasonic does; I am not certain about Canon.

  • Canon Legria HF M36 and iMovie

I am considering buying a new Canon Legria HF M36 and want to do all editing with iMovie. Will this work as it should?
If not, what brands would you recommend from an iMovie compatibility point of view?

That shoots in H.264, and will be just fine for imovie09.
I shoot in h.264 1080p/60p and drag my files off the SD card then import into iMovie. Then once done, export as 720p HD. Works perfect.

  • IMovie'11 support for Panasonic HDC-TM700

    Hi,
I am considering the purchase of the Panasonic HDC-TM700 camcorder. The iMovie compatibility list has an entry for this camcorder with the note that 1080p/60fps is not supported. I would ASSUME that this camcorder can be set for 1080p/30fps as well but I have not been able to find an on-line manual or other specification that lists anything but 1080p/60. Can anyone confirm that this camera could also be set to 1080p/30fps?
    Thanks.

The TM700 is a great camcorder. Despite being an avid iMovie HD (iM 6) supporter, I have started using iMovie 11 and it has won me over a bit. Still prefer iM6, but 11 is on the right road.
I use the SD600 (little brother to the TM700) and if you are prepared for a bit of extra work, it works fine with iMovie.
This range of camcorders record in standard AVCHD (1080i) and this can be imported into iMovie with no bother at all. This is the same top quality footage the most good HD camcorders shoot at the moment. You can save yourself a few headaches and simply record in standard AVCHD at top quality and I'm sure you will be more than satisfied with the result.
The only problem comes, that these Panasonics also 'raise the bar' and record in an even higher new format called 1080p50 or 60. This is AVCHD in almost every respect, but is Progressive, takes a fair bit of processing power and as a new format, isn't universally recognised. iMovie doesn't recognise these video clips as AVCHD movie files and so won't work with it, hence that proviso in the supported cameras list. As I say, you don't have to record in 1080p (progressive rather than interlaced) it is just an additional option available to you.
I do however record in this top quality and there are a couple of extra steps required. The movies can't be viewed with quicktime or iMovie, but players like VLC or Movist play them no problem. Secondly, these video files have to be converted to a format that is recognised by iMovie if you want to edit them. I use the free Automater script Rewrap2M4V but there are others such as ClipWrap and Voltaic that will also do the job for you. Once converted they can be imported into iMovie like any other movie file and the quality is excellent, and hopefully as the format becomes accepted, then the files may be able to be imported without conversion.

  • ShuttlePro iMovie support gone?  Any comparable products??

A few years back when I did a ton of iMovie DV editing, I used (and still have) a Contour ShuttlePro - going to Contour's site looks like they are either not offering iMovie support or Leopard support any longer (not sure if I'm not understanding this correctly or not). It does look like FCE is supported though (which I am considering upgrading to) - anybody have success getting this thing to work with iMovie HD or 08? Are there any newer, better shuttle controller options out there to assist in speeding up the editing process? Thanks!

Well, I did find out that iMovie HD 06 will work with it, along with the latest drivers on their site (even though they dont mention iMovie compatibility) - there is still a profile in the software for iMovie button configuration. iMovie 08 will not work however.
I am still curious if there are other/better USB based shuttle/jog controllers out there for editing (without going in studio equipment)??

  • Sanyo iFrame vs 1080p

None of the sites I look to for cam data have updated to include the FH1a or the HD2000a (they only refer to the pre-a versions) so I've recorded a 16 second clip with iFrame and 1080p and have them available for download for 5 days (or until bandwidth gives out). They're over 40 megs each (yeah, both of them are).
    iFrame
    http://files.me.com/makentosh/nk0e0u.mov
    1080p (60fps)
    http://files.me.com/makentosh/of0hf5.mov
The FIRST thing you're likely to notice is that the 1080p file is actually smaller than the 540p one. Also, I trimmed both of these using QuickTime X which saved them as .mov. They may work happily with iMovie, OR they may force the creation of the AIC converted file. I can reup as .mp4's if anyone wants to see that.
Does anyone know what's "special" about iFrame? There's been discussion that it's an intraframe codec, but can you tell from looking at the file?

Other than trimming to make sure they're both the same time length to get a better feel of the relative file sizes, I've not performed any other editing. All of Samsung's many modes shot as mpeg4 video (which is another thing I like about this cam). I'd thought that anything that's not iFrame would need to be converted to AIC. Can you tell if iMovie's representation of the iFrame content (internally) is any different from the 1080p? I haven't done that level of investigation myself as I'm not familiar with how iMovie stores files, but now's a good time to learn!
I didn't do import tests with this video, but with others I thought I did note a slightly longer import time with the 1080p, but those clips weren't as controlled as these. I'll try again.
I did notice that the updated "a" version of this camera doesn't include the "Video stabilization limitation" under Additional Compatibility Information on the iMovie compatibility page
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3290
This leads me to think that they're doing some kind of shenanigans with the content so that it's less affected by motion. I shot a really edge case video (monitor, in the dark, twisting the camera like a screwdriver) and I could just discern some "jello-ness". My normal video appears to stabilize quite well.
I'd like to see a review versus the FH1. From the reviews for that camera, it does appear they've made other minor changes, not just a new image size (starts faster, interface changed, etc.)

  • Exporting DV back to a Samsung VP-D351

    Hi,
Could anyone tell me if they have been successful in exporting DV back to a Samsung VP-D351 camera within iMovie? I can transfer DV from the D351 to the iMac but after editing the movie I cannot copy it back to the camera, I’ve tried all the suggestions on this forum and have had no luck. I’ve Googled for the spec of the D351 and some sites state it has DV-in and some just state DV-out.
When I attempt to copy the movie back to the camera it goes through all the correct steps but my camera will not record, it just says STOP in the viewfinder, sometimes when I attempt it my iMac will completely crash requiring it to be switched off at the mains.
Many thanks for any help on this one,
    Dave

    Hi Sue,
    Thanks for the quick reply!
    In the manual it states:
Recording with a DV connection cable.
    1.     Set the Power switch to player.
    2.     Connect the DV cable from the DV jack of the camcorder to the DV jack of the other device.
    •     Make sure that DV is displayed on the LCD screen.
    3.     Press the Start/Stop button to begin REC PAUSE mode.
    •     PAUSE is displayed on the LCD screen.
    4.     Start playback on the other DV device while you monitor the picture.
    5.     Press the Start/Stop button to start recording.
    6.     Press the Start/Stop button to stop recording.
When I try this I do not get “DV” displayed on the LCD (as stated in step 2) and pressing the Start/Stop button has no affect, it just displays “STOP” on the blank LCD. Even though the manual clearly states the camera IS capable of recording in DV mode it doesn’t, I wonder if this is a camera/iMovie compatibility issue?

  • Buring DVD in High Def

I have a Canon AVCHD camcorder. Can I burn my movies in High Def on my Mac?

Yes, you can - iMovie supports HD (and it'll be excellent quality, but not blu-ray quality) and you can get up to 2 hours on one DVD. You might want to open iMovie, click on Help and type in HD quality - it will give you lots of information on HD quality, file size, etc.
Another option would be to consider purchasing Toast (including their HD plugin); they claim you can burn blu-ray quality onto regular DVDs (that would be where you'd get about 30 minutes of video onto a regular DVD). Check it here:
    http://www.roxio.com/enu/products/toast/
(click on compare and the popup will show that you can author HD content to DVD)
Check the iMovie compatibility list for your camcorder here:
    https://support.apple.com/kb/HT3290
If you have a problem importing into iMovie, I'd suggest posting a question in the iMovie forum; there are some very knowledgeable people over there.

  • Does anybody how how to install a software to imac (intel), does anybody how how to install a software to imac (intel)

does anybody know how to install a new software to imac (intel)?
I have tried and is doesnt' automatically load up when a program is placed in the drive.... its like it isn't reading it or something

In addition to stedman's, you really should not need any software for your camcorder. What is it supposed to do? You already have software on your Mac to work with video: iPhoto and iMovie.
Edit: take a look at this article:
