Imovie complete project

After completing a iMovie or Idvd project can it be imported to Final Cut Express?

iM08/09 offers you two options:
export a XML file, which is just a 'edit list', telling FCE which clips to import, how to arrange them and how to 'cut' them. no additional work, effects, titles, audio transferred.
2nd option: choos export with quciktime, for HiDef choose Apple Intermediate as codec = that 'consolidates' the project to one single, solid file, FCE can open as one clip.
consolidates means: you can not edit titles, tranitions etc.
so, BEFORE transfering, keep in mind, what you like to do in each app.
for instance, I used FCE as 'special effects machine' (=keyframing animations, multi tracj video etc) for some iM projects, so +vice versa+ in transfer direction.
or, you do a 'rough cut' in iM to reduce material, transfer the XML and do all post production eyecandy in FCE..
or, you use only the nice ready made Themes in iM, and do the whole capturing and edit in FCE...

  • Do I Really Need To Uninstall IMovie '11 to Access Completed Projects from IMovie '09?

    Hi everyone:
    What's Happening
I would like to uninstall IMovie '11 so I can complete a project I spent hours (and hours) creating in IMovie '09.
I am frustrated that IMovie '11 has deleted the project I had previously in IMovie '09, after I upgraded to IMovie '11.
Immediately after I upgraded to IMovie '11 recently, I DID see my previous '09 projects still reflected, although I also noticed my IMovie '11 removed weird, random features (titles, mostly) during the transition. And it was very random - i.e., some of my titles were reflected; some HALVES of my titles weren't, etc. Just random.
Noticing this and not wanting to miss anything I did with my completed project (which was already good to go, before the upgrade), I then tried uploading the last fully complete version of my project, as edited in IMovie '09. I went into my Time Capsule and just went back by a few hours and restored those project files. However, IMovie '11 not only did not recognize any of my '09 projects, it actually DELETED all of the projects it originally showed me when I upgraded. So now I was totally out of my project files!
Therefore, if I want to edit that and publish them ASAP, it seems I have to literally:
    Uninstall iMovie '11.
    Reinstall '09.
Restore my last completed '09 project file.
    Upgrade again to IMovie '11.
This time, if I notice some titles are weird, don't try to bring any of my old files with me again. Just let them naturally show up as they did before, and literally fix and comb through literally every. single. quirk. or new error I see.
    My Question
Is this really what I have to do in order to retrieve a project I already spent hours completing in '09? Or is there some shorter way to retrieve those files that IMovie '11 has dismissed and deleted?
Also, does Apple know about this bug? Are they doing anything about it? Does anyone know?
Any answers would be HUGELY appreciated!
    Thank you,
    DRS.

Thanks for your reply, Klaus1.  I'm currently running Snow Leopard.  I'd considered upgrading to Lion but was told, even by Apple, that I wouldn't be satisfied with its slow performance on my iMac 24.
I have plenty of hard drive space with 160 GB available on my internal hard drive, but I've been storing the archived video clips and the iMovie projects on a fire-wired, external 2 TB drive.  Could it be that using an external hard drive for the iMovie project is part of the performance problem?
A quick check on the Apple website shows that my iMac 24, which was manufactured in mid-2007, can support up to 4 GB of RAM.  I wonder if I should consider a RAM upgrade before upgrading the entire computer.  How big a deal is it to replace RAM in the iMacs?

  • Export Complete iMovie '08 project

We are hoping to move an entire iMovie '08 project to a friends computer.
We first tried just moving the project from the iMovie Projects folder to the same location on their Mac, but the .avi files that were imported into iMovie from iPhoto did copy (nor are the stored in the iMovie Events folder).
Also the songs didn't seem to copy either (the songs were inserted into the Movie through iTunes).
Has anyone found any sort of easy way to export an iMovie project to another computer with all of the linked resources (that might be in iPhoto, iTunes, or wherever)?

iMovie Projects are .MOV files. Once you create a Project it takes the clips from Events in whatever format they are in (usually AVI from iPhoto, DV etc. from the iMovie Events folders) and converts them to H.264 .MOV files. Once they are in a standardized, editable format, you can then overlay sound, transitions, and titles.
It sounds like you tried to move the files from the Events folder as located in the Finder. That will not be the integrated project.
Just select the edited clip(s), Control-Click and choose Reveal in Finder. That's the file you want.
If you want both the Event and Project files on another Mac, you need to manually find the AVI file via the iPhoto link in the Event Library. This is because (for some odd reason) iMovie cannot find the original clip using Control-Click Reveal in Event Browser for iPhoto imports to the Project Library.
Therefore, you need that same AVI moved via the Finder from iPhoto tot he other Mac's iPhoto.
A better editing option is to simply export all your iPhoto movies in AVI format to iMovie directly. That way the internal linking between the Project Library and Event Library works as it should. The iPhoto grab from iMovie is a bit of a kludge.
    Hope that helps.

  • Importing from iMovie HD project

I bought a new iMac and i'm importing in iMovie 08 a project from iMovie06.
But i have 2 problems: first not all the clips are imported and second that the clips that are imported are not in the same order of the original projct.
    Does anyone have any ideas?

If in iMovie 06 have a project with 20 clip in iMovie 08 found less clips but everyone is complete. Entire clips are missing.
    1) If you are counting "rendered" clips in the "Project.PKG > Media folder," they are not included in the import. You will have o move them manually if you want them.
    2) If you are counting clips included in the source bin, then I don't know if they are supposed to import or not. (I.e., I don't use the built-in HD import option in iMovie '08.) You can check and see if these are your missing clips. if they are, then add them to the HD project before import and see if they are imported to iMovie '08. If they aren't, then you may need to send a feedback to Apple regarding this issue.
And the order in which are imported is not the same as in the original project
Editing and rendering in an iMovie HD project will change the clip names which, in turn, may re-order the files as the finder "sees" them. (I.e., they are ordered alphabetically in the project media folder.) So, if they are imported in alphabetical order, they would be out of their original "source" or timeline order.

  • IMovie '09 Project Won't Open, Causes iMovie to Crash

A few days ago, an iMovie project that was fine if a little slow because it was large suddenly started to freeze when I added or tried to edit some audio, forcing me to force quit iMovie. Now today every time I open iMovie and try to open the project, the little rainbow ball pops up and everything in iMovie freezes, forcing me to force quit it again. I removed the project from iMovie and made more space on my computer and iMovie worked fine, but it started acting up again when I put the project back in. I'm worried the project may be corruputed somehow, especially because this is something I worked hard on for a long time now. I've heard there are ways to fix it, such as putting it through TextEdit or Word for Mac, but the project won't open in those programs. (And before you say it, yes I SHOULD have saved a previous version of it in Time Machine, but I didn't.) If there's a way I can fix this project without losing anything, please let me know!

  • Help! I can't import iMovie HD project to iMovie 11

I have this project I was working on for hours in iMovie HD (v. 6.0.3), but I wasn't happy with the editing features so I decided to upgrade to iMovie 11. In iMovie 11 (v. 9.0.8), I followed the command of File > Import > iMovie HD Project. Then I selected the project I had been working on with "optimize video" checked and the "Save to" location being HDD.
Once I clicked "Import" I got the following with absolutely no progress bar and no video clips. I have also tried unchecking the "optimize video" box and with different old iMovie HD projects and I always get the same thing: a blank project with no video clips. I also checked for updates for both iMovie 11 and iMovie HD and restarted my computer.
    HELP!

    Hi
iMovie 1 to HD6 - is one product in up-grade
iMovie'08 to 11 - a compleatly different program with no relation to iMovie 1 - HD6 what so ever.
iMovie'08 to 11 are in my opinion no gain at all over iMovie HD6 only a severe loss of functions.
BUT I USE - miniDV tape = interlaced SD-Video and for this iMovie HD6 is the best tool - if one doesn't go for FinalCut Express or Pro (not Pro-X) - as these are realy the best ever done - for my video works.
So I would stay in iMovie HD6 and complete the Movie - or -
Start all over in Video-editor of choice (the one You like)
There are no working transcioding tools to move project over from iMovie HD6 to ANY THING ELSE - Not iM'08-11 or FinalCut any version - transitions, texts and other editings will not travel over in an editable form if at all.

  • Problem publishing iMovie 09 projects to Youtube

    Hi, everyone.
I've had my MacBook for a little over a year and I've been using iMovie 09 for a few months. I've had a few minor issues (the screen briefly becoming grey and black and pixel-y when trying to use the "full screen" play-back feature) but nothing major.
Now, the last two times I've uploaded my completed projects to youtube, the audio is messed up. The audio from some clips will come through when it isn't supposed to. I deleted the videos from youtube and removed them from youtube through iMovie, and then re-uploaded them, but it is doing the same thing.
Has anyone experienced anything similar? If so, is there a way to fix it? It is incredibly frustrating.

Steve's book is worthwhile: He does go over how to do this. Here is the link that steve didn't mention
    http://home.mindspring.com/~d-v-c/
I recommend to others and they thanked me....
But Steve, I didn't say media only because when you share to media...you can't drag and drop the file. That's why i have been sharing to itunes and then dragging the file to a USB stick for bringing over to another imac that is synched with my appleTV.
But he is right--- it is share export quicktime. HOWEVER, its not that easy. There are specific parameters to follow to get the best results. Steve's book goes through that....

  • How can I combine three completed projects with text & sound to make one single movie?

How can I combine three completed imovie 09 projects (They all have text & sound) to make one single movie? Thank you for any help you can give.

If they are three separate projects than you will have to export all three as video files. Then you can reimport them into a new event, join them together as if they are ordinary clips, and export that.

  • How to transfer imovie '09  projects between machines?

I was working on a project on my Air when on vacation and now can't move it back to my MacPro at home. I have tried the obvious and can get it to my desktop but the project is always greyed out when I try to import it.
Perhaps I'm missing something simple as I haven't used i movie much (using Final Cut Express on my MacPro.

Here is the HELP text: If this does not help you, see my next post for a workaround.
Copying or moving a project to an external hard disk
You can copy or move your video projects to a compatible external hard disk connected to your computer using a USB or FireWire cable.
Moving or copying projects is useful if you want to work on a project using another computer. You can connect a hard disk containing a project to another computer that has iMovie ‘09, and then work on the project on that computer.
Moving projects can also be useful if you want to save space on your computer’s hard disk.
To copy or move a project to another hard disk:
Connect a compatible external hard disk drive to your computer using a FireWire or USB 2.0 cable.
A hard disk icon appears in the Project Library.
NOTE:When using an external hard disk with iMovie, make sure it has been formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
Select the project that you want to move or copy, and then do one of the following:
To copy the project, drag it to the icon of the hard disk where you want to copy it, and then choose “Copy project” or “Copy project and events.”
If you choose “Copy project,” none of the project’s video or other media is copied to the other disk. To edit the project, the computer you’re using must be connected to the hard disk that contains the media.
If you choose “Copy project and events,” the Events are copied to the other disk.
Either way, a copy of the Events remains in the original location, and any other projects using clips from those Events still refer to them at their original location.
To move the project, hold down the Command key as you drag the project to the icon of the hard disk where you want to copy it, and then choose “Move project” or “Move project and events.”
If you choose “Move project,” none of the project’s video or other media is copied to the other disk. To edit the project, the computer you’re using must be connected to the hard disk that contains the media.
If you choose “Move project and events,” the project and the Events used in the project are moved and deleted from their original location. Any other projects using clips from those Events refer to them at their new location.
If you’re moving a large amount of video at once, this process may take several minutes.
You can also move or copy Events to an external hard disk.
You can also quickly consolidate all the media used in a project onto the same disk as the project. This makes it easy to collect a complete project onto one disk that you can then edit from any computer using iMove ‘09.

  • IMovie 08 to iMovie 08 Project transfer issues

I am trying to move and edit a mostly complete project done in iMovie 08 from my laptop to my desktop. I have copied the .rcproject over but i can't import it. I then put in my iMovie project folder and it still didn't recognize it. Any thoughts? I have seen where 08 has issues with previous versions of iMovie, but that isn't the case here.

I have copied the .rcproject over but i can't import it. I then put in my iMovie project folder and it still didn't recognize it. Any thoughts?
Think of your iMovie '08 project as a collection of index cards on file at the library. You remove the cards from the drawer, take them home, and then start searching through your house looking for the books they reference. Unfortunately, all of the referenced books are still back in the library and not in your home so you can't find any of them in your house. Same thing with your project. It is just a list of references pointing to the source content and a set of instructions stating what is to be done to the various sources. Basically all of your reference pointers were "orphaned" as soon as you moved the project file off your original start-up drive. Taking it a step further, you cannot simply copy your source files to the new computer in the hope of reestablishing the previously orphaned resource "paths" since by their very nature, the files modify their own "resource" pointers when copied. While it is possible to use some sort of a resource editor application to go back and manually correct each and every pointer, it is not something I recommend. The normal advice here is "Finish the project on the computer where your started it." Another "rule of thumb" here is to never make a major upgrade to the application in the middle of a project. (I.e., don't switch from iMovie v6 to v7 in the middle of a project.)

  • Importing unfinished iMovie 4 project into iMovie 9

I just purchased a 27" iMac quad core that came with iMovie 9. On my old Mac (iMovie 4) I had unfinished iMovie projects I was hoping to complete in the new version. But, when I attempt to import them, the projects are grayed out (not accessible). I've tried all three import options (movie, camera archive and iMovie HD Project), renaming the old projects to end with ".imovieproject" and tried importing projects saved in various locations. How can I import from 4 to 9? And, if I do, is there any way around the apparent loss of music, video effects, and transitions? I put a lot of work into those projects...in fact, I maxed out the iMovie 4's capabilities. I really don't want to start all over again. Help, please!

I would recommend finishing them in the old version.
Alternatively, if you can get a copy of iMovie 5 or iMovie 6, there is an upgrade path from iMovie 4.
You can import imovie 5 or 6 files into iMovie 09, but you will lose music, transition, and effects. You only keep the edits.

  • How to export completed project to DVD?

I've recently returned to the Mac world based on jobs and have compiled a birthday video for my father in law.  We are supposed to give him this video as a gift tomorrow night but I did the recent update to my iMovie and now am having trouble using the program.
Can anyone help me figure out how to burn my completed project to DVD?  Under my Share command, the options listed are Theater, Email, iTunes, YouTube, Facebook, Vimeo, CNN iReport and File.  Any suggestions?  I tried saving it under the "File" option and then importing it to iDVD but it looks like the file saves as an mp4, which doesn't want to import to iDVD.
Would love any help that can be provided!

As I see it - there are two KIND's of DVDs
_ Data-DVD - to store files - Can not be played in any Standard DVD-player - and this is done on desktop/finder
_ Video-DVD - for movies to be played on standard DVD-Players - and to structure and en-code this one NEED a DVD-authoring program as iDVD, DVD Studio Pro, Roxio Toast™, Burn etc.
So What kind of DVD do You need ?
And if iMovie'13 (ver. 10.0.x) has NOT changed this. The Share to DVD will result in a Data-DVD (I do not have last version of iMovie to test - hench why I make this remark) but this goes for all iMovie till iMovie'11 (ver. 9.0.x).

  • Can't Share (export) iMovie 6 project to Canon HV20

I'm running iMovie 6.0.4 under Mac OS 10.5.1.
I keep encountering the same error when trying to export a completed iMovie project back to HDV tape. I select Share -> Video Camera but keep getting an error message saying "Cannot Export to Camera, Your FireWire camera is not powered on or is not available. This also can happen if you added or removed a device from FireWire. Please try again."
Needless to say I've tried, tried and tried again trying a variety of different connection and powering-up processes. The camcorder is also in the correct mode.
I have connected the camcorder before and been able to export completed iMovie projects. So I don't think it's a hardware issue or an incompatibility issue. The only thing I can possible think of is I might of been using 10.5 when I last successfully completed this process. I'm now using 10.5.1.
So I'm at a loss. Has anyone experienced this before or know of a work around? I guess for now I'm going to "Share to a file, for sending to a camera later" and hopefully be able to export the completed project to tape in the future.

I have the MacBookPro and Canon HV20. I use both iMovie08 and iMovie06HD. The 6HD allows me to (a) Produce a better quality DVD than the 08 does and (b) export the movie back to the MiniDV tape on my Canon HV20 camcorder. I use the DV-Firewire cable to connect the HV20 to MacBookPro. There is no problem when I transfer the movie from HV20 to MacBookPro, but I cannot transfer it from MacBookPro to HV20, no matter how many times I reload the 06HD. My camcorder is connected directly to the MacBookPro. Are you always able to transfer your movies from MacBookPro to your HV20? If yes, I will appreciate a step by step process you use. Thanks.

  • How to move iMovie '11 project to Macbook with iDVD

I have a movie I created in iMovie '11 on an iMac without DVD drive or iDVD. I have a Macbook with both. How can I burn the completed project onto a DVD on the other Mac? I have the appropriate Firewire cable. Thanks.

Copy the iMovie projec file, xxxxxx.iMovieProject to the other Mac and put it in the Movies folder.  Open it with iMovie, use the Share ➙ Media Browser menu option to get it out of iMovie so iDVD and import it from it's Media/Movies pane.
Follow this workflow to help ensure the best quality video DVD:
Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the  File ➙ Save as Disk Image  menu option.  This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
To check the encoding mount the disk image and launch DVD Player and play it.  If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding was good.
Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality.  Always use top quality media:  Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.

If I pull pics out of iPhoto, and later want to drag an archived projet bac into iMovie and the pics are no longer in iPhoto, will I be able to keep working in the project in iMovie?

Very likely not, as the iPhoto's can be used for something else.
More like it took a copy, or it's referencing that spot on the drive in the editable files and most likely made a copy to create a new permanent export file.
Sample one picture and a iMovie file and see what happens.
