IMovie Compression Error!

Hey all,
I have a customer who needs to encode clips from a DV Cam to Sorenson 3. During the encode they get this error:
"A file compression error occurred
The movie could not be properly compressed. The movie may contain some data that is invalid for the type of compression selected."
So far nobody seems to know how to solve this. Any ideas anybody? Thanks

We also had this problem. Here is what worked for us. I'm interested to see if it works for anyone else.
This video project was the end product of four different students working more or less independently on the same project over the span of ten months. Each used digital still cameras, jpgs exported from PowerPoint, the internal microphone, and a number of different digital video cameras to get media into the iMovie project.
We had exported and burned many versions of this project so when it stopped working and starting giving us the Compression Error message, I knew it had to be something we just added.
The side note here is that when exporting the 20 minute video at Full Quality DV, the process will complete, but the exported file will have video but no sound. The first time we got the Compression Error message was when we exported using Expert Settings and tried just the audio. That forced it to fail.
The solution was to select small groups of clips and try to export each one. When the Share, or Export window opens, check the box at the bottom that says, Export selected clips only. If it worked, we skipped to another set. Eventually we isolated it to a section of clips and exported each clip individually. It turned out to be one of the audio dialog clips that was recorded using iMovie earlier that week. As a test, I deleted it and the entire video exported just fine. We rerecorded that audio clip and everything continued to work just fine.
I opened the Media folder inside of the iMovie project file and located the offending voice recording. It opens in QuickTime and it seems to be perfectly fine. I have no idea what was wrong with it. Two other audio clips were recorded right after that clip and they are working just fine.
I suppose this is less of a solution, and more of a work-around. Hopefully it helps someone out, because it made me crazy.
(I don't know if this is related, but the iDVD project took about an hour and a half to compress the video, but it took well over 4 hours to compress the audio on a 1.67 GHz PowerBook G4 with 2 GB RAM. This seems to be common with most of the larger iDVD projects this year. I almost force quit iDVD, but getting info on the .dvdproj file showed that it was still growing.)

  • Export/Encoding/Compression Error

I have been trying to burn a DVD for the last week without any success using iMovie and iDVD.
When trying to burn the DVD on iDVD, the program would "Unexpectedly Quit" while it is encoding the movie. It would encode the first 2-3 minutes of the movie before the program quits. Furthermore, when I try to save the project to a Disk Image, the program unexpectedly quits too.
Since I noticed that the program was quitting during the encoding process of the first movie, I tried exporting the first movie into another format such as QuickTime and MPEG-4 using iMovie. QuickTime immediately prompts the message:
"A file compression error occurred. The movie could not be properly compressed. THe movie may contain some data that is invalid for the type of compression selected."
The project consists of JPEG's, Quicktime MOV's with sound(from a Kodak Digital Camera), and M4p's (purchased through iTunes). I would believe all these formats are compatible with iMovie since they are all imported successfully. When trying to export to MPEG-4 with Audio (AAC-LC), the encoding processes half way, then quits unexpectedly.
On an interesting note, when I encode the same movie using MPEG-4 with NO AUDIO, the encoding process completes successfully. I am suspecting that the issue may have to involve the Audio.
Out of the 9 iMovie Projects I included in my DVD, 5 of them could be exported into Quicktime MOV's correctly, while the other 4 would cause the program to quit. I noticed that the 5 that do work are all under 5 minutes of video and audio. The other 4 that say "A compression error occurred". I do not know if this somehow attributes to the problems.
Is there anything I can do to encode these 4 movies correctly?
If it is an issue with the audio compression, is there a work around for it?
If I am able to encode these movies correctly on iMovie, should the encoding process for iDVD work correctly also?
Any help anyone could provide would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Hi ebm - not sure that I can help much, but a few observations:
iMovie converts M4P files to AIFF, so that shouldn't cause a problem.
The .MOV files from the Kodak still camera may be more problematic - are you sure that the audio on them plays in iMovie? What format are those files - perhaps they're mpeg4?
I cannot see why you would want to convert the movie to MPEG4.
What about creating a QT (Full Quality) file of each movie, then open iDVD and drag them into the iDVD window. If their combined length is less than 60 minutes, you could use the Best Performance setting with background encoding ticked (in iDVD Preferences) - you can then watch them as they encode.
Of course, Best Quality may produce a slightly better result, but the encoding occurs after you click Burn.
    Good luck!

  • File Compression Error Occurred on Expert Settings

I finally thought I had a decent set of settings to compress the QT movie for YouTube (and will tweak this now that each ten minute movie can be 1 gig! Hooray!). So I used what had worked on the previous movies and got the error
    File Compression Error Occurred
The movie could not be properly compressed. The movie may contain some data that is invalid for the type of compression selected.
The movie itself contains imported footage from my camcorder (DV), as I usually use. And I used only iMovie stock music loops and one Sfx...all aif files.
I've tried tweaking the settings of Expert Settings here and there. Changed the 15 fps to 30. Made the Key At this point, what do I look at? Something within the movie itself? Or the settings (H.264, qual. Hi but also tried med, Frame rate tried 15 and 30, Key frame rate tried Auto and 10, Encoding multi-pass, Dimen. 640x480, Scale Letterbox. Sound is ACC, 24,000 kHz, stereo, bit rate 48kbps. Prepare for internet streaming is unchecked currently. Think it was that way when I last made a movie.
Don't know where to continue to troubleshoot this. URmpfff. Help!

Wow...this is a sticky problem. I could not resave the movie as another name. Frozen program, pinwheel of death, etc. I've had about three frozen attempts since I first wrote...
Googling phrase from error message got only a few lost souls who never did post the solution. One solution someone had figured the problem was with Flip4Mac...to uninstall it, but they had problems uninstalling it. So did it...frozen computer).
I did get this solution to work to move my movie along. It saved rather quickly to a 350 meg or so full quality file on Expert settings. Then got a single .dv file. Imported that into a new iMovie project (wonderful....that I titled My Great Movie fer petes sake...Hope I remember to retitle it.
Along the way were error messages like Error 54, no permission to write to file, no hard drive space, etc. Baloney, I think...or is there any clue in all this?
    Thanks.

  • Compression error

I just bought a big external harddrive and want to archive my old videos on there.
I tried to import a movie (that I did many years ago on a PC) from the miniDV tape to iMovie (DV project). For that I turned the option to split the move at the timestamp off since the movie is already edited and I just want to export it as high quality mov file.
Problem is that when I try to export/share the movie (not matter to which format) I get after a while an 'compression error' (sometimes iMovie dies, usually I get an error window).
This happens not only with this movie, I tried several (newer and older) movies, always the same result.
I started blaming the new Quicktime update since I heard may bad things, I uninstalled Flip4Mac and any other QuickTime plugin - nothing helps. Even exporting to 'DV' gives me an error (and one should think to convert a DV to a DV should be as easy as flushing the data to disk). I tried several times to import it again from tape (thinking something might have gone wrong) --> same result whenever I try to export, I get an error.
Last night I finaly turned on the option to split the video at scene changes (timestamp) and to put the clips automatically in the timeline. I ended up with 200 small clips in the timeline and exporting works just fine (my next test will be to reinstall all the quicktime plugins).
So this is a doable workaround that is not causing any headache for me.
But my question is: is there any known limitation of how long a single clip in iMovie can be? What else could cause this problem?
My worry is: At some point I might end up even with splitting at the timestamp with a clip that is too long (it happens that one forgets to stop the recording and than you might have 45min of funny recordings). Solution for this is probably to turn on 'split after 10min'. Given that this options exists, I guess there is some undocument limitation (I would see no other good reason for this options to exist).
Any insight thoughts about this would help me to understand the cause of the problem and how to prevent this from happening.
    thanks

20'' iMac (Intel)   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   iMovie HD6, latest QuickTime update

the problem had probably to do with the fact that the video was recorded in the LP mode with 12-bit audio which is causing problems when importing through QuickTime and iMovie. Those videos were edited and written back on my old PC without problems.
My workaround is now that I import those videos with Windows from my boot camp partition (as DV-AVI) and than reboot to MacOS to convert them in a better format. Conversion with the AVI files captured by windows don't show any problems.

  • ACE Compression Errors

I have a ACE 4710 which I have enabled compression on the L7 policy map using compress default-method gzip. We have recently run a performance test and I have noticed many compression errors on the show service-policy detail output. However I cannot find details as to what these errors are or cause in any manual.

  • HR Tables are not updated due to compression error

We have a custom program that program used to copy data from Production system to other QA systems. The program uses the FM

While uploading the those tables from the file it updates half of the tables  and other tables are
not updated as FM Table_decompress produces a exception saying "Compression error". what would be the problem here?

  • Imovie loading error with plugins

when I load imovie, the error message is: Something is wrong with the plugin auto saturation carbon, and about 5 other plugins. How can I fix this? I reinstalled the software, but maybe there is something I am missing..

if you downloaded plugins, they may not be compatible with imovie 6 or may not be comp[atible with Intel.
You need to check with the company that you downloaded them from. There may be an update that will make them work.

  • Compression errors: HDV to HDV/DV (green square dots)

    - Compression errors: HDV to HDV or HDV to DV (green square dots) -
I'm having compression errors when trying to export HDV Projects using
    - FCP Export Quicktime movie
    - FCP Using QT Conversion
    - Compressor
For example today I tried to export 1,5 hour HDV Project (edit version) to master HDV clip. I used FCP Export QT Movie and the new master clip has 19 compression errors. Most of them were during first 30 minutes.
    See the picture from: http://www.aavekammari.com/comperr.html
Errors are mostly green dots lines, but they can also be other coloured dots or just small squares.
I have tried to remove extra RAMs, using only Apple's original RAMs, tested RAMs with couple of softwares. I read somewhere else that the RAM could be the issue.
Does anyone else having this kind of problem?
Final Cut Studio with all latest updates (FCP 5.1.2) / Quicktime 7.1.3
    G5 dp2.5/2.5GB   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    http://www.aavekammari.com/comperr.html
It seems that errors can appear even when rendering in FCP (second picture in the link above).
    I did some research.
    - when I tried to export QT file: In 1,5 hour project all errors were during first 50 minutes.
    - when I forced FCP to render all clips (CC added): All errors were again during first 50 minutes!
So I found that all media files in first 50 minutes are in the same internal HD (not same where the FCP is). And the rest of them are in external firewire HD. Could this be reason, but why, anyone?

  • Cannot edit MP4 files, maybe compression error?

Hi, I'm new to Final Cut Express. I just bought it to replace iMovie. But I'm having a issue - only had it open for not even a hour and I started getting a "General Error", specifically "Out of Memory". It was a mp4 clip, like this:
    MPEG-4 MOVIE
    1280x720
H.264, MPEG 4 HIGH EFFICIENCY AAC
    2 (Audio Channels)
    3,127 (Bit rate)
    45.5 MB
I browsed the forums for a bit, trying to figure out what I could do to make the errors go away. I've never had problems with compression or anything like this before. I saw somewhere that I should use MPEG Streamclip to convert the clip to .mov using Apple Intermediate, but MPEG couldn't edit the file either, although it played it fine. I tried going in and trying to export to .mov via Quicktime, but it only exported a completely white video with normal audio. I have no idea what to do now.
Why is this happening, how do I fix or prevent it from happening??
    Message was edited by: BreatheHorror

I think you missed me a little here... from MPEG Streamclip, I took the original dimensions and tried to convert it to quicktime with the following settings:
    APPLE INTERMEDIATE CODEC
    QUALITY 100%
    UNCOMPRESSED SOUND
    1280x720 UNSCALED
    FRAMERATE 29.97
When I try to convert like this, using any of the clips (the clip I had originally talked about was one out of a batch of twenty, I tested them all last night after posting a realized they all get the same error) I get a empty, 0kb file and a Error that says it can't prepare the movie.
FCE won't even open the video at all. I can import it, but when I try to open it with the viewer it doesn't open, it simply spits out a general memory error. It's my Quicktime that does the white screen every time I try and convert the movie through it.
I will however, try to change the setup of my FCE Sequence... when trying to use this clips I was using HDV-APPLE INTERMEDIATE CODEC 1080i50. I was using it because I need the 1080p (this is for Youtube) and it was the only easy setup that was the size I needed. I'm a noob, I don't have any idea on how to change the size of the video (just any easy setup gives me the old square video, so if I try to change it when rendering the clips would be all placed weird with possible gaps).
