IMovie crashed. Completely lost an ENTIRE PROJECT
I just recently updated my Macbook pro to OS X Mavericks Version 10.9 and so I also updated my iMovie to Version 10.0.1. I used it the whole day yesterday and it kept crashing everytime I used the "Ken Burns" crop tool specifically. It will first lag then crash. Or My entire macbook would lag then I'd have to restart it. So when it came down to me about to export it just doing the final touches, I used the tool again then t lagged (OF COURSE) and I had to restart. The difference this time was, when I restarted my macbook, I opened iMovie again and IT LOST MY ENTIRE PROJECT. IT WASN'T THERE. It says that there are two projects but I can only see one which I did earlier. The other is nowhere to be found.
Does anyone know how I can recover my project? I friggin' worked hard on that and all was loss. I haven't set up my time machine.
Is there still a way that I can recover my lost project?
Please help!
Same thing happened to me, luckily I just started a new project, but Its very annoying, a tool that use to work is now all of a sudden useless . . . or less effective cause you can't make use of the crop function.
I'm considering rebuilding my machine with old version of OSX.
Is there a fix for this ?

IMovie crashed, file lost, yet still shows up numerically?
I have the same problem. I had edited for a total of 26 hours until my iMovie was 99% done. I imported a photo and not only did iMovie crash unexpectedly, but the entire computer shut off (I was at 100% battery and plugged in). The computer restarted and the 40 minutes of video I edited were gone. However, iMovie projects says I still have 4 projects, but only three are showing. I've searched all over my computer, done "show invisble file" searches, checked every folder I have, and I still can't find it.
Anyone think they can solve this problem? Would I have to take my harddrive to a specialist? All clips? 81. Hide rejected clips? 80. Rejected clips? 0.

IMovie crashed and lost all projects
I just got the new MacBook Air for Christmas and am running Mavericks and iMovie 10.0.1. I have been working on a 20 minute long video for school for the last few weeks until today when my iMovie suddenly crashed and now my projects are no where to be found. I have tried deleting the com.apple.iMovieApp.plist file (but i don't even have that file, mine is something like 'com.apple.imovieapp.shared ... plist)in the preferences folder but that did not do anything. I have also deleted and reinstalled iMovie but still nothing. When I open up iMovie my libraries are there and I can see the video names under the libraries, but there are empty. I can also see some of my events when I click on "All Events". I have done everything I can think of to try to get my movies back. Also, when I go to my iMovie projects folder from my user name in the HD, it is there as .rcproject but it is in a data format. Unfortunately, since it is a new computer, I do not have a time machine backup to recover from. If anyone had any suggestions, it would be greatly appreciated! I'm desperate!
Thanks for your help!If you have iMovie Projects and imovie Events folders in <user name> / Movies, these are from iMovie 9, so I infer that you have transferred them from an old machine and upgraded them to imovie 10.
If this is correct you should still have your projects and events. iMovie 10 stores everything in packages with the extension .imovielibrary. If this has become corrupt you should be able to upgrade them again (they will automatically go into a new library). You will find an empty file with a name something like "updated to iMovie 10" in the events and projects folders. These need to be trashed in order to allow them to be upgraded afreash.

I lost an entire project on Adobe Story after it crashed(even though it was online)
I had an entire project with summaries, 2 character bios and a 13 page screenplay that I have been working for weeks now and Adobe Story crashed last week and when I opened THAT project was gone, while others weren't. I am a Creative Cloud member and really need help with this. Thank you!
Can you send your Adobe ID (email that you use to sign in to Story) to agupta at adobe dot com ?
We'll try to figure out what happened, and find your work.
Thanks

IMovie crashing, can't access my projects
Hi everyone, sorry, i can't find a similar topic already open?
I used iMovie 11 to create an hour long collection of home movies, with transitions, audio tracks, some sped up sections, etc. I tried to export it to iDVD yesterday, but the audio went out of sync with the video clips. So, I detached the audio from the clips, but just before completing this task, iMovie started crashing as soon as I would try to open my project.
My project was saved on an external hard drive, so I tried opening it on another iMac with iMovie 11. It worked at first, enabling me to finish detaching the audio, but because all my music tracks were saved in iTunes on my first computer, I needed to bring in all the music to iTunes on the second computer so that iMovie could access the tracks. Since bringing the music tracks into iTunes, i haven't been able to open my iMovie project at all. iMovie crashes as soon as I launch the application - it won't even show my project, it just crashes straight away.
It is crashing on both computers, I have tried deleting the .plist caches (I followed some online instructions, but don't really understand it), and I cleaned up my computers with OnyX. I did software updates, and do these regularly. I've tried restarting a million times. Both computers are only 3 months old and have plenty of memory available.
I'm at a loss, as I spent weeks of late nights working on this project, and now i haven't got a clue how I'm going to access it, yet alone burn it to a DVD. It was supposed to be a Christmas gift for family, and now I've got no Christmas presents to hand out! This is a total nightmare. If anyone can help I would be so grateful! Please help quick!
Kate.Thank you so much for your reply, I'm desperate for some help.
This afternoon my iPhoto said it couldn't be opened "because it was incomplete or damaged", so I decided to uninstall iLife 11 and reinstall it. This seems to have stopped the crashing problem in iMovie and has restored my iPhoto back to normal.
The problem I have now, is that when I open iMovie, I can see my project, but I can't edit it at all. I can click on 'Edit Project' but only if I open the project via by external hardrive (where it is stored), not directly from iMovie.
When it does open, I can't edit it, I can't preview it, the viewer isn't working (although sometimes i can see distorted, broken bits of images), and I can't play the project at all (not using space bar, not in the viewer, not in the preview mode). The only way I can play any clips is in the event browser. It doesn't seem to recognising the clips used in the project (as there are no longer any orange lines underneath the clips I've used).
I don't know what to do with it now - I can't even begin a new project because the viewer isn't working in a new project either. Is my project corrupted, and causing functionality problems in iMovie? And if so, is there a way of repairing the project?
Thank you for your kind help! It's really appreciated!!

We just installed maverick and the new final cut. On 2 separate computers we have had it crash while using final cut and have lost the project. Now we are reading that our time machine is not working with maverick. Any suggestions on how to get timeline back from the new final cut? Thought it was suppose to save automatically.

Close iMovie if open. In Finder, go to your User/Library/Preferences folder. Locate the file named "com.apple.iMovieApp.plist" and drag it to the Trash. Don't empty Trash just yet.
(NOTE: As you are on Lion, your Library folder will be hidden. To access it, while in Finder view click on Go in the menu. Now option-click on Go and you will see the Library folder appear in the drop-down list.)
When next opened, iMovie will rebuild the .plist file with the default settings. If desired these can be changed in the iMovie menu item iMovie>Preferences. If iMovie opens and appears to be working normally, you can now empty the Trash.
Deleting the preference file will not harm your Events or Projects but may fix iMovie's odd behaviour. The file can become corrupted under some circumstances, such as when iMovie quits unexpectedly (as in your case) or is Force Quit. Also, it's possible that the upgrade to Lion has upset something in iMovie - deleting the .plist file may fix this.

IMovie crashes when I open my project
I'm getting frustrated with a project in iMovie. I haven't touched the project in a few weeks. Prior to today, everything would load up fine. Now when I try to open the project, iMovie begins to load the file, says "less than a minute", and then crashes half way through the load.
It's a large file at about 55 gig. It's on a 500 gig LaCie external harddrive. I have over 140 gig available on the drive with my OS on it.
Does anybody know how I can get the file to open? I really just want bits and pieces of the project, but they are very crucial.Hi M
My guess is that Your external hard disk is not formatted as
Mac OS Extended journaled.
Then You have trouble. I think that Lennart Thelander has some advice
on how to restore this condition.
Try to search this and iMovie 4 or prior - forum.

Imovie crashing - showing no buttons, wiped projects
Don't know whether anyone can help - I'm new to macs having spent 12 years using a PC.
Having bought a new imac with iLife 08 installed, I started using imovie and it was behaving just fine. I created a fairly big project (about 15 minutes of video) and then one day imovie just decided to crash in the middle of editing. Now when I open it:
- It won't access two of my previous projects that I created in imovie 08
- It doesn't move the playhead when previewing video
- None of the main buttons are showing, from the 'traffic light' buttons in the top left-hand corner, to the editing buttons in the main window (I can upload a photo if you want)
What can I do? I've reinstalled it twice now, and updated it to the latest version, but nothing has changed. I've had to download imovie HD in the meantime to work on my project, but I really don't want to have to recreate everything I have done in the 08 version.
Can anyone suggest anything?-Sigh-
I am having the EXACT same problem - with a brand new MacBook w/Leopard, etc. (I am also a new convert to Mac from PC). I have tried all the remedies suggested in the threads, to no avail. I will keep watching and tinkering - if I find a fix I will let you know.
Apparently iMovie is a finicky little thing, doesn't like it when we try to drag or import certain movie or video files (who knew). It just seems wrong that iPhoto slideshows won't work in iMovie - and I thought Apples were so easy to use. . .Looks like I'm gonna have to use my PC to get this movie project out the door. Arrrrgh!
They say misery loves company, but I think we'd all just rather have our iMovie back. -
IMovie Crashed...and my project disappeared, or did it?
Hi! I've been using my MacBook Air running OS X Yosemite 10.10.1 to edit a movie on iMovie 10.0.6. The movie was up to about 40 minutes of edited video with nearly 450 imported clips (many clips only a few seconds) when mid clip trim the application froze. My computer automatically restarted after less than a minute and when I reopened iMovie, my project was missing BUT all my clips (non-edited) were still there.
I've read as many other discussions as I could find about this problem and haven't seemed to find a viable solution. If I open up the iMovie Library Package in Finder I can see the name of my current project with a CurrentVersion.imovieevent file. All the other associated folders i.e. Original Media, Render Files, etc. seem to be fine as well. BUT when I open up iMovie, the project is not listed anywhere.
If anyone has any suggestions or solutions I would be extremely appreciativeThanks, Luis. I have looked through all my clips and don't find any with my movie attached. My film thus far is about 3 minutes and I don't have any clips close to that in length. Is there somewhere else to look for a clip that got opened in a timeline?

IMovie crashed, lost project. How do you SAVE in iMovie? Where's the file?
Just spent 4-5 hours building a complicated movie from a year's worth of footage. At some point, iMovie crashed. I think I lost all those hours of creative decision making, since I cannot see the file when I reopen iMovie.
There is no "open" command in the file menu. There is no "save" command in the file menu.
This would imply that Apple was autosaving for me to save me trouble. Hmm. I can save in almost every program I use, and revert, and save versions.
How do you save a project in iMovie? I don't see save in the file menu, as has been the steadfast tradition of Apple applications since I purchased my first Mac in 1984. What in the blazes have you done with SAVE? It is so basic.
Along the same line, where is the project file located on my hard drive? I would like to open it. Since I assume you have been autosaving to somewhere, could you please let me know where my file is saved.
<Edited by Host>This just appeared to happen to me too. I tried clicking on the file in Movies/iMovie Projects. That didn't work.
Then, I made a copy of the file in a safe place. I noticed it was 2.2 MB, so something had to be in there. Next, I started iMovie and clicked the Project Library arrow. The project was listed there. I opened it and got back most but not all of the work. It lost a lot of my audio changes. Here's the thing. I worked until about midnight, and then left iMovie up and running til noon. You would think it would have autosaved the changes by the time I came back. I suggest making your own copy of the file now and then, just in case. -
IMovie Crashes When Editing Projects
iMovie 08 crashes while I am editing a project. It happens all the time now which is weird because I have made movies successfully in the past. I have 250g HD and 116g free space. The event I am editing is 62g. I am so confused and frustrated. I can't make any edits without hanging up and having to force quit out of the application. Any ideas?
"..Would I be able to import the project part that I export and delete.." ..You would, except that it'd be all "baked" into a single clip when exporting it, so although you could chop it up again once you'd re-imported it, your original edits wouldn't be there to re-edit.
(..In the previous iMovie HD 6 there's an option 'Burn Project to Disc...' which does allow a project to be exported in an editable format, but if yours is 62GB and a DVD holds 4.7GB or data, that's be several DVDs' worth ..oh, and I think it couldn't split a project across several DVDs..)
So if you'd want to re-edit parts later, your best bet may be to copy the entire project to an external FireWire hard disc (..preformatted to 'Mac OS Extended', using Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility..) and then delete half, or more, of the project that's on your internal disc, thus making the whole thing more stable.
(..To read more about formatting an external disc, click on iMovie Help and type external hard disc into the Search box; that'll give you a topic called 'iMovie: Format external hard disks as HFS Extended for best performance'..)
Continue editing what's left on your internal disc, or tell iMovie where you've moved your project to - onto the external disc - by clicking on iMovie's hard disc icon at the upper-right corner of the Events Library..
..at least, that's where iMovie's Help says you'll find that icon, but - honestly - I've never seen it there, even when I've had one or more correctly-formatted external hard discs connected!
(..To read about that in iMovie's Help, Search on move project and that'll give you the Help file 'Storing your video library on an external hard disk'..)
So; if subsequent editing's not important, just Export most of your existing project, then delete it from your internal disc. You'll be able to bring it back later in one chunk to complete the start of your movie.
If later editing is important, copy - or, better still, BACKUP - your project to an external disc, then tell iMovie where you've put it, and either continue editing on that disc, or delete half the project from the internal disc and continue editing on the internal one.
A Backup is extremely important anyway for a project your size: what would you do if your computer, or project, went wrong now, and you had no copy of your 62GB project?! ..Probably pull all your hair out, shout and scream!
Erm; how to combine the rest of your project - what you'll edit from now on - with what you've saved on the external disc? When you're happy with the remainder of your edit, Export it as a single file, and then add it to what you've saved on the external disc.
But for a project your size ALWAYS MAKE A BACKUP!
P.S: As this is a big important project, test this first by doing a short Export of a short test project. Then check that you can recombine the two halves. Ensure that everything works well before you perform this kind of major surgery on your big project! -
The subject line of this post pretty much explains everything.
I use a MacBook White from 2009 which I upgraded to Snow Leopard earlier this year. I use iMovie 8.0.6, have never upgraded to iLife '11 (iMovie 9.0).
I've never in these 3 years had a problem exporting videos to YouTube, I have 62 on there and just now have an issue. Every time I try to view a project full screen AND try to export a video iMovie crashes and shuts down fairly quickly (after about 20 seconds when attempting export).
Today I went to the Apple store about this, didn't get much resolution on it. They couldn't determine what was wrong. The attempted fix they were going to suggest I had already done (deleting the plist and restarting iMovie). And that fix didn't help. They checked my hard drive and it was fine.
Has anyone had this same problem? What did you do to fix it (if anything)?
One solution, which is what I'll probably do, is to buy and upgrade to iLife '11 (iMovie 9.0)... but without backing things up as I don't have an external hard drive and can't afford to buy one anytime soon (am unemployed). Where my videos are on YouTube may serve as my "backup" and "hard drive" (you can take videos form online, put them on your computer and into iMovie).
What do you suggest for fixing this? Is there another way to do it without upgrading to iMovie 9.0? What are your expriences with this issue?Turns out I'm going to have to BUY iLife '11 (from Best Buy) because the download version on Apple's site is for those with Lion only and I have Snow Leopard. This is becoming a major PAIN. Apple shoudl continue to offer its older products online at least (if not in their stores) rather than just dropping them completely.

URGENT PROJECT DUE TODAY.
iMovie crashed while I was working on a project, now I can't c the file in iMovie, however I can see it in Finder and moved to the movie folder, but it still doesn't show in my iMovie library or project list and nothing will open it. It is listed as a .rcproject and I cannot find how to open it. PLZ PLZ HELPWere you working with iMovie 9 or 10 when you had the crash?
It sounds like you were in iMovie 10 trying to update your iMovie 9 projects into iMovie 10.
If you were working in iMovie 10, see if you can still see everything with iMovie 9.0.9 (the 2 versions have completely different media file structures).
If you were in iMovie 9 it sounds as if the .rcproject package may have got corrupted. You can look inside the package in Finder with the "show package contants" contextual menu but I would not know how to repair it manually.
Do you have a backup or are you running time machine? With a backup you should be able to replace the offending package with a working version.
