IMovie cropping

I am new to iMovie and am trying to crop a clip so as to reduce the file size. Whenever I crop the clip, the portion that I crop is 'hidden' but not deleted. Hence when I look at the file size of the newly cropped clip, it is still the same.
Is there a way to crop the clip and remove it perminantly, i.e. reduce the file size of the clip?
Thanks

For clarification, does
this solution work for HDV? Or will it automatically
reduce the quality to DV when you do this?
The quality won't be negatively affected.
When discussing the export, I said to export to a "Full Quality DV" movie. That's technically not correct. It is correct for DV-type iMovie HD projects, but not for projects of other types.
A "Full Quality" export always matches the native movie format of the current project. So a "Full Quality" export from an HDV project is NOT the same as a "Full Quality" export from a DV project or an MPEG-4 project. The exported movies are different types.
iMovie HD automatically picks the correct export format for you. That allows your clip/project to be exported, then re-imported with no loss of quality.

  • IMovie crops-truncates-cuts-deletes left and right area of ".mov" movie!!!

iMovie crops-truncates-cuts-deletes left and right area of mov movie!!!
I am using iMovie 8.05 on Mac OS X 10.5.8 on Mactel. Is that iMovie '09. The dual-naming is utterly confusing.
    OK, here is my problem:
When I import a ".mov" file (generated by screen movie capture via Internet using Snapz Pro X) into iMovie, it shows complete on the lower pane (event timeline). Yet, when I drag from the event timeline pane it to the top left pane (project), the movie shows truncated-cropped (the left and right parts of the screen are not shown). That is, such left and right areas are deleted!
Is this a bug? How to fix it?
    Thanks.

    Update:
I have seen that I can use the "Window - Cropping..." menu to fit, crop and ken burns, yet if I choose to fit, then all the movie is included which is what I want, but also black areas are shown on top and bottom of the movie which I do not want. Is there a way to delete such black areas?
If instead I try to use crop or ken burns, I cannot include all the movie area, because the real area of the movie is much wider than the area that the iMovie frame allows. Is there a way to select beyond the default area on the left and right, to really include all the movie?
    Thanks.

  • Photos in iMovie cropping when returning to project view.

    Hi,
I'm using an iPad Mini with the latest iOS and latest version of iMovie.
I an importing an image of my company's logo to iMovie to use as the start of a movie.
The initial preview is fine, and the image centres.
Exiting the project and then re-entering makes the image 'zoom' in to a section and it is impossible to zoom out to the full image. iMovie effectively automatically crops them.
    Please see below screenshot.
    What is the issue/fix?

I had a similar issue also, seems to have just started (maybe the new iOS?).  I actually had 2 versions of a photo I wanted to use, 1 original and 1 that I had edited in the iOS photos application (I cropped it a bit).  The one I edited worked just fine, the original one did not!  So I just barely cropped the original one that was messed up, added it again to my project and that seemed to work fine.  Maybe that will work of you as well?

  • IMovie Crop picture-in-picture & feature requests

I love the new iMovie because it is so fast. I wish it had a few more features though. Maybe it does and I don't know where to look...
    1. cut-out picture after you insert picture-in-picture. It seems to let you cut-out crop a picture when you insert a picture doing green-screen which is great! but when you select picture-in-picture overlay, you are stuck either with the full size video or fully cropped version. For instance, if you are inserting a person shot on white background into a full white screen, you can't cut-crop out studio junk that are on the side of the picture without cropping the whole thing closer - loosing resolution.
    2. sharpen video. the color correction seems quite good but how come you can't sharpen video a little?
    3. cut and paste video sections INCLUDING title and dissolves.

  • Imovie crops my video after I move it to the project

Imovie is cropping my scene when I move it from the event window into the project window. Any idea why this is or how to fix it. I have been d=editing with this program for many years and have never seen this before. The part of the scene I want is being cropped out, how do I work around that?

I don't know how to do that. I *DO* have two YouTube examples. These are two songs in the same set, same camera, same conditions.
"FANTASIA CUBANA" is the one with the problem:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7p4VmjHOpBo
You can catch a glimpse of the uncropped view in the first second or two. Then the rest is cropped. (The first second or two was from one clip and the remainder from another clip.)
I did "THEIRS' TEARS" (same vantage point) after that and BEFORE trying any of the solutions to the problem and for some unknown reason, that project worked just fine:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zzQLIgXTNJM
There was no zoom involved at any time in either of those projects. Now, having moved on to two more songs from the set, I can't fix the cropping problem and I also want to go back and fix "FANTASIA CUBANA". Help !!

  • WHY is iMovie cropping 640x480 MPEG4 video when I drag clip to project?????

I don't think I am trying to do anything fancy.
My Sanyo camera takes VGA resolution video in MPEG-4. When I start iMovie '09 it asks me if I want to import the clip once I pop the SDRAM card in the USB slot. OK. I import the clip. iMovie checks for stabilization. Fine. After the clip is imported I run it and it looks fine.
I create a project and select standard aspect ratio. I select a clip from the imported video and drag it to the project window. The clip appears but I lose about 30% of the frame area around the frame because it's been cropped by iMovie.
I check HELP and locate the Project Properties... menu item and under "Timing" I set Initial Video (and Photo) placement to "Fit in frame". I click OK and retry placing a new clip in the project - SAME PROBLEM. I test an exported clip and the clipping is really there in the exported video clip.
The control settings in iMovie '09 do not seem to work with cropping control. Is there a rather large bug in iMovie or did I miss something obvious? It's just a 640 x 480 video. I would have thought it would be amongst the most common frame sizes aside from 320 x 240 outside of mobile phone video clips.
Thanks in advance for your help.
    Mike

aaaaaah, what a relief! I thought I had unwittingly messed up some weird setting. I have to say iMovie is not really geared to the layman. I would never have guessed zooming had anything to do with stabilization.
AppleMan1958, thank you so much! That fixed it completely!!! Now I can send off my video clip and go to bed!

  • IMovie cropping is ignored when move clip to iDVD

I'm having an annoying problem. I have an existing iDVD project that I want to add some clips to. I have edited some new clips in iMovie and I want to send them to iDVD. I can't share or export them to iDVD because it creates a new iDVD project. I can drag my cropped clip from the clips windows in iMovie directly to a submenu in iDVD but when I do this it puts the entire original clip in, not the cropped one. I have tried importing an iMovie project within iDVD but it only imports whatever is in the timeline. This is a problem because I need each clip on the DVD to play and then return to the main menu so I have not put any of my clips into the timeline. I know I can export my cropped clip into a quicktime file and then import it into iDVD but I have over 40 clips! There has got to be an easier way to get cropped clips into iDVD. Help!

Well the solution would be to export each clip out as a "Full Quality DV file" (from the timeline) then drag all of the DV files to iDVD. This would provide you "return to main menu" functionality.

  • IMovie crops video when exporting to videocamera

The past two video I have exported back to my video camera after editing them, have been cropped. I only noticed it on this last one, where it cropped out the text. I don't remember it ever doing this in version 4 and below. Is this normal, if so WHY? Has anyone else noticed this and is there anything I can do?

It used to be the case in version 4, and previous, of iMovie that when applying text - e.g; Titles - you could choose to have "QuickTime margins" or not.
QuickTime is a movie format for playing on computers, and the computer monitor will play the entire width and height of the movie.
Normal DV is intended for - ultimately - showing on TVs, not on computers ..and TVs - at least those with cathode ray tubes - crop off the very edges of the picture (..a phenomenon called "overscan"..) so as not to show the timing information and VHS "head-switching" sizzle along the bottom or top of the picture, teletext data lines and other garbage.
Thus, any text which is placed near the edges of a movie on a TV screen may get chopped off.
Broadcasting companies (and film directors) use "TV Safe" margins around their titles, so that when shown on TV the titles do NOT get chopped off or disappear beyond the boundaries of the screen.
The current version of iMovie HD doesn't seem to have a choice of allowing "QuickTime margins" (..i.e; positioning titles nearer to the edges of a frame for use in a QT-only movie, where they'd get cut off on a TV..) or not, but it seems to position titles a bit further up, and a bit further in from the frame edges and nearer to the "TV Safe" area, than before.
So some titles may get slightly cropped when shown on a TV and in a camcorder viewfinder (..v/fs generally do NOT show the very edges of a movie: they behave more like a TV with "overscan"..) but perhaps you can pad out your titles with a bit of extra space at the edges, or re-position them on the screen - some titles can be dragged to the position you prefer - to avoid their being cropped by "overscan".

  • Imovie cropping issues version 10.0.2

I was watching tutorial videos on Imovie. Once i came across the cropping section after I cropped 1 clip EVERY clip I upload now is automatically cropped. I also try to manually crop it back to orignal height and width but it doesnt fit the video right... Anyone know how to fix this?
    Thank you

So my problem is that all my film content I have looks fine, but once I put it up in the section to combine clips its cropped and looks like this above. If I change the settings to fit then there are black bars on the left and right side. It DIDNT do this at first until I initially messed with the cropping options. I would try to crop it back but it doesnt scale back to fit the original video. I've been googling options and popular feedback is to mess with project properties and change the aspect ration but my Imovie does NOT have that option. (Most of my video clips are coming from quicktime screen recorder right now)

  • IMovie Cropping issues

When i upload a clip into iMovie it is cropping the clip to the upper left section only showing about 1/4 of the total video. It does the same thing when i go to play the clip in Quicktime however when i play the clip in VLC it is normal. Any one know where i may be running into trouble?

Sorry if You thought me to yell - never meant so (I hate yelling).
Only a mere guessing - as You didn't say in what size and codec.
Then knowing this I would suggest - trashing iMovie pref file - or rather (and much better)

  • IMovie cropping tops of still images in slideshow

I've been bothered, or annoyed, by tops of my stills being cropped in the Ken Burns effect, when viewing my slideshows. Is there any way to ensure the whole image is seen? Ratio to be adhered to?

  • IMovie cropping edges of vidcap in final output

When I am editing in iMovie, the video screen capture looks fine, but after exporting to QT, the output seems to be truncated on the right and left edges. Or the image could be expanded slightly in the frame. Has anybody run into this and if so, any advice?
    Thanks in advance.

Is there a way to have the .mov show up instead of just a black screen or do I need to convert to a different file format altogether?
Unfortunately, at least for the moment, Apple Animation and Apple Video encoded video will have to be converted to another video compression format. Relatively view applications/devices seem to use the Apple Video odec any more due to its lower color depth, however, Apple Animation is commonly used as a default "intermediate" rendering video codec. (E.g., Snapz Pro X and LiveType are two examples.) Luckily, most applications usually have an "export" options which allow the user to output to other compression formats which are more "iMovie '08 friendly." Applications or devices which don't must be manually converted. Since this "black" screen output does not seem to be shared by most other QT applications, almost any QT conversion capable or third-party application can perform this conversion with DV, AIC, M-JPEG, MPEG-4, and H.264 being common video codecs favored by iMovie '08 users. DV and AIC are, of course, specifically designed for editing purposes and have relatively high data rates making for large source files. M-JPEG has a more moderate data rate with somewhat lessened potential for the retention of "visual" quality. Since you can choose to limit or not limit the data rate, MPEG-4 and H.264 can be used where you want to balance file size and potential loss in "visua"l quality. For instance, H.264 unlimited data rates tend to approach those of AIC at a medium quality setting (in the 18.0 - 22.0 Mbps range for SD VGA material) but can be used at much lower data rates as may be required with minimum loss in visual quality. (I.e., the default "media browser" preset for SD VGA content is 1.7 Mbps so I would recommend staying in the 2.5 - 3.5 range as a minimum for when using H.264 as an "intermediate" editing codec for the same type of content and higher for HD.)

  • IMovie and photo cropping problems!!

    Hello!
I am making a slideshow for my Grandpa's memorial service, and have many photos where I have placed a title directly on the picture so that they are clear to people watching (year, people in it, etc.)
    Here's the problem:
iMovie crops every photo so that in many cases, the titles I placed on the pictures aren't visible!
BTW - the KB effect is turned off, and all photos were imported without the effect.
I have played around with placing the photos on different sized canvasses to see, when imported, which dimensions come the closest to fitting correctly on the iMovie screen. It seems like putting the photo on a 6.5"x4" canvas works best to deal with portraits (gets the whole top and bottom in, leaving black lines on the sides), but I'm wondering if anyone has more definitive information about what size photo can be imported without being cropped. I've got 200 pics to deal with, and if I'm going to resize all of the canvasses, I only want to do it once!!!
Thx in advance for your help!

    Hi, Ben
I didn't get your response until after I had played around with the pics some more.
Brilliant minds think alike, though, and I ended up doing basically what you did, using a 1920x1440 canvas (can't remember the inches, and no access to it on this computer).
Just for the record, even with the KB effect turned off, the settings were cropping the photos a little bit because of it (the default import setting for the KB effect was at 1.16, and even with the KB effect off, it was still affecting the photos). When I changed that setting to 1.0, it did make a difference, but putting the photos on a blank canvas and resaving them was really what worked!
Sorry everyone who replied - I tried to give you "helpfuls" and a "solved" for Ben, but my computer keeps giving me an error message!!!
