IMovie deleted itself!  No time machine active.  How can I retrieve it?

I removed iMovie from the dock.  It was not in the applications folder anymore.  I was not running time machine when this happened.  How do I retrieve it without having to spend $15 on a new iMovie?

Removing iMovie from the dock should not delete it from the Applications folder. However, if you delete it from the Launchpad, it will delete it from the Applications folder.
If you have a retail copy of iLife 11, you can reinstall from DVD.
If you bought iMovie from the Mac App Store, you can open the Mac App Store, make sure you are signed in with your Apple ID, and find it in your installed apps. You can download it from there.

When I try to set up Time Machine, there are no back up disks displayed.  Therefore, I cannot turn on Time Machine.  How can I fix this?

Thanks - let it finish, but zero out data is unnecessary. That option is intended to thoroughly erase previously recorded data so that it cannot be recovered without sophisticated data recovery techniques.
Case sensitive is OK but I suggest you simply select Mac OS X Extended since "case sensitive" may complicate things for you in the future, should it be necessary to restore files to a case-ignorant volume.
Once it finishes, make sure it appears as a selectable option in Time Machine. If it does your problems are solved, but consider using Disk Utility and reformatting it. This time don't worry about zeroing unused space, and select Mac OS X Extended (Journaled). It will only take a few seconds this time.
For a more thorough description read Apple Support Communites contributor Pondini's FAQ: http://pondini.org/TM/5.html Read the pink box regarding the subject of case sensitivity.

If the folder was replaced, it was written over.
Nothing short of forensic data recovery (probably involving taking the drive apart to scan the discs seperately) is going to recover anything (if indeed even that will).

  • Not enough space on my new SSD drive to import my data from time machine backup, how can I import my latest backup minus some big files?

I just got a new 256GB SSD drive for my mac, I want to import my data from time machine backup, but its larger than 256GB since it used to be on my old optical drive. How can I import my latest backup keeping out some big files on the external drive?

    Hello Salemr,
When you restore from a Time Machine back up, you can tell it to not transfer folders like Desktop, Documents. Downloads, Movies, Music, Pictures and Public. Take a look at the article below for the steps to restore from your back up.

  • I got a new disk to use as a Time Machine. How can I unconvert my old disk?

I had a 250 GB portable hard drive I was using as my Time Machine Backups disk. When I filled that up, I bought a 1 TB hard drive. I've set up the 1 TB disk as my new Time Machine backups disk, but the 250 GB is still formatted as well. How can I unconvert the 250 GB to just be a normal portable hard drive?

Just re-frormat it with Disk Utility, choose your disk and then choose "Erase" tab (Mac OS X Extended Journaled)

  • Gigs of hourly Time Machine backups, how can this be? How do I see exactly.

Good day everyone, this is my first post here. I have been a Microsoft laptop user for 15 years, and just bought a Macbook and just switched to Mac. My wife says that I have "been obsessed" for the last few weeks with Apple Apple Apple, Mac Mac Mac ....
After 2 weeks of switching (tired of constant windows problems), I can honestly say that I am IMPRESSED with the Macbook and Mac OS X. You can see that it's an operating system designed to easily and quickly complete "any task at hand".
*On to my question,* I have Time Machine set up, and basically it does it's magic every hour to an USB Hard Drive. However, recently I have been checking to see by clicking my mouse on the TM icon in the upper right file menu, to see "how much TM is backing up".
Sometimes it says that it's backing up a few megs, and sometimes it says that it is backing up 4 gig. There's a BIG DIFFERENCE.
I am basically using Safari, Mail, iCal, Address Book, XP thru my Parallels virtual partition, and other basic programs like an HTML editor for my houseboat website. http://www.all-about-houseboats.com ( I couldn't help but mention the site)
    So my question is:
*I don't see how I can accumulate a 4-6 Gig of changed data in an hour?*
*Is there any way to see exactly the files that TM is backing up every hour?*
I know there's many knowledgeable people here, and I find the Apple/OS X environment totally refreshing compared to the Microsoft Windows world. If anybody here has the same issue, or can direct me to how to see what's being backup, or to a simple software to see where these "gig's" of occasional hourly changes are coming from?
Again, thanks for reading my first post, IAN...

    Welcome to Apple Discussions
I use the TimeMachine Buddy widget
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/dashboard/status/timemachinebuddy.html
Easy to use and just a middle mouse button away
    Here is a typical output:
    Backup requested by user
    Starting standard backup
    Backing up to: /Volumes/LaCie_2/Backups.backupdb
No pre-backup thinning needed: 556.5 MB requested (including padding), 152.81 GB available
Copied 643 files (12.1 MB) from volume Macintosh HD.
No pre-backup thinning needed: 542.0 MB requested (including padding), 152.80 GB available
Copied 372 files (247 bytes) from volume Macintosh HD.
    Starting post-backup thinning
No post-back up thinning needed: no expired backups exist
    Backup completed successfully.

Oh... and if your mail provider is someone like Google, They may be sitting in your all mail folder on the server.

This from Apple KB Article  If Time Machine is not in your Dock, you can enter Time Machine from the Menu Bar or System Preferences.
Deleting data from a Time Machine backup
To delete all backups of one or more items from a Time Machine backup, follow these steps:
Click the Time Machine icon on your Dock to enter the Time Machine restore interface.
Click on the item you would like to delete. Command-click to select multiple items.
Control-click (or right click) the highlighted item(s) and select "Delete All Backups of..." from the contextual menu, or select "Delete all backups of..." from the Action Item menu.
Authenticate with an administrator password when prompted.

The memory on my MAC is full. It holds 4GB of RAM of which 79GB are photos. I would like to back up my photos to an external drive but just do not know how. I do not wish to use time machine. How do I back up my photo library, then delete them from my MAC to free up that 79GB? Thank you.

    Hi
Just to clarify a couple of points in your post.
RAM (memory) is different from hard drive space. You have 4GB of RAM, but that has no bearing on the amount of drive space you have, of which we know that 79GB are photos.
If those photos are in iPhoto, you should be able to move the entire iPhoto Library, from the Pictures folder, to your external hard drive. You can just drag and drop. Do not have iPhoto open while you're doing this. Once it's done, you can double-click on the moved iPhoto Library file to associate it with iPhoto, so that the app remembers where the library is for next time.
One more thing. When you move a file to a different location, and then delete the original, you don't have a backup. You still only have one copy. So if that external drive dies, you will lose all your photos. Time Machine is a very good way to prevent this from happening. You should dedicate a different drive for Time Machine backups.

  • How can I restore a deleted calendar from time machine

I accidentally deleted one of my calendars.  How can I restore it from time machine?

I'm not sure why it didn't work.  I deleted the old Calendar folder and then replaced it with a Time Machine version of the same folder from the previous day.  Then I opened iCal and there was still nothing there.
The reason I just deleted Calendar folder and it's sub-folders and tried to start from scratch is because I could tell which sub-folder was for any one specific calendar since the sub-folder names were in some sort of code.

  • How do I recover accidentally deleted bookmarks from time machine.

I use lion os I still have the bookmarks on my ipad and iphone. I stopped the auto sync.
Is there a way to import my old bookmarks from time machine?
    I can't find it .
As a side note I was deleting bookmarks with the keyboard delete key and it ran away deleting bookmarks long after I let up. Then safari froze. died and lost the bookmarks

I don't know why you moved the app. Move the application back into your "Applications" folder which is where it belongs and should always stay. Then drag the app down to your Dock, if the Dock icon is not there already.
Now, open AddressBook. The click on the TM icon on your Dock. Now do you see the TM screen with AB open? Good. Use the TM time arrow back button until AB appears the way it used to be. Then click restore.

  • Is it possible to delete files from time machine?

Is it possible to delete files from time machine? I had a drive crash, restored the files to a new drive, and now the old versions and the new versions of the files are both backed up, taking up a mountain of drive space. Do I just have to wait 'til the drive gets full and then tell it what to delete first?

Hi, I need help in a related problem. I have 500gb time capsule. I needed larger hard drive, so I now use TM to back up to a different 1tb hard drive. So I don't need the TC as a TM back up device. But I want to use the TC's hard drive as an extra external hard drive. I deleted the files that were on it. but it still shows it has a sparsebundle file with a size of over 400gb ( probably the size of the old backups). When I use disk utility to try to erase it, I am not offered the erase tab. This "disk" does show on the desk top as a mounted disk (I think) with only 53 gb free. How can I set this up so all the disk space is free and I can use it for storing files, not as a back up? Thanks
