IMovie distorting (overdriving) my mastered audio track

I've mastered an audio track, peaking at -0.2 dB and sounding good, with zero digital or analog clipping. When I Import this track into iMovie the loudest parts of the track become distorted, sounding over-driven.
I've deselected the Normalize Audio option, and tried dragging overall track volume down, but still there are parts of the audio sounding like I haven't got a clue how to master a song.
Is this a bug in iMovie, or is there a maximum loudness of audio track that it will tolerate, (say peaking at -1 dB for example)?
Thanks for any help.

It's been a long day.....somehow I accidentally turned my ducking to zero also, then when I applied my audio settings to all clips, obviously it also applied my ducking mistake.  Just not my day!

  • Separate audio tracks in iMovie?

I recorded my movie with separate voice and background audio tracks. When I import it into iMovie, it's just a single audio file. Is there any way to separate the audio files within iMovie?

    Hi
How do You record ? With what Camera ?
    • 2 Stereo tracks - one with background one with voice ?
    • 2 x 2 Stereo -
    • 5:1 audio
    • 7:1 audio
iMovie can use ONE Stereo Audio track.
To get audio OK I use
    • Audacity (free from Internet) or
    • GarageBand - where I can also do Audio works
BTW - to get full freedom - Use FinalCut Pro

  • Unwanted Duplicate Audio Track

I've got a few video clips that keep giving me trouble in iMovie '13. When played back in iMovie, they have a second audio track that is a slow-mo version of the main audio.
I recorded the clips at 1080p on a Nikon d3100. I converted them to 720p using Handbrake and the Apple Universal preset. That process output three .m4v files. Each .m4v file plays just fine. No audio issues at all.
Next, I import the files into a new event in iMovie. Import process appears to go fine. However, when I play back the imported file (whether through the media library or the timeline), a second audio feed appears. This new track is a slow-mo version of the main track. It is delayed by about five seconds and plays right over the top.
I have no idea what's going on. Any help would be appreciated!

    Thanks for the suggestions.
I wanted to lower the resolution as the 1080p video seemed to be destroying my mid-2011 Mac mini. I thought 720p might be a mit more managable.
I did have the same result whether dragging directly to the timeline or using the import feature.
Ultimately, I solved the problem by "exporting" the 1080p video to 720p files through QuickTime. I must have had some odd setting enabled in HandBrake.

  • Unknown audio track on my DVDs

I put together an iMovie with stills and an audio track. When I preview it, it plays perfectly. When I burn the DVD of it, a totally different audio track plays and the one I put into the iMovie is nowhere on the disc. Help!

  • Importing XLM from iMovie one audio track

    Can someone please help me?
When I import my XLM file from iMovie into FCP and open it ... I get one audio track.
This is really weird because in iMovie it's stereo and even the videos in QT are stereo.
    Any ideas ?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi Michael,
Yes, sorry. I'm using version 4.5, I've not seen this problem before.
I tried extracting and then importing the track in again but that didn't work. I can extract it to a separate clip but there is a lot of editing to be done with lots of changes and continually having to edit a second track would make the job longer.
I was hoping to find a solution in QuickTime where I could change the track ID.
Any thoughts on the version I'm using?
    Regards Alan

  • Audio tracks are lost after importing from iMovie...

After importing my movie from iMovie I lost my audio tracks. What is the problem ?

    Hello kropacd (and Karsten;)):
I realize at this late time that this will be a pain..but you might want to try to extract your audio prior to exporting (sharing) to iDVD to se if that helps...
The only other thing I can imagine is that you used 12-bit audio in your video instead of 16-bit? It really needs to be 16-bit-check the setting on your camera.

  • How do I add a quicktime (10.0) audio track to imovie (8.0.6)?

I would like to add a quicktime (10.0) audio track to imovie (8.0.6). The audio is in .mov format. When I go to import it, it is grey and will not allow me to click on it.  I tried to put it into itunes and select it from there but I can't figure out how.

You might have more success converting it into an AIFF file.
Try this: Download MPEG Streamclip, it's a free utility that allows you to do a lot of different conversions on audio and video clips. What we're going to to try is save an AIFF to 48kHz and re-import it into iMovie and see if there's a difference.
Once you download MPEG Streamclip, open it and go to File Menu> Open Files... and navigate out to your AIFF file. Make sure the drop down list at the bottom of the window has All Files listed (instead of just Audio or just Video). If you don't show all files, it will gray out files it doesn't recognize. Once you have your audio clip selected, click Open.
From the File Menu > Export Audio... choose AIFF and under Sample rate: choose 48kHz. Click OK
Save the clip to the Desktop, maybe give it a different name (say #2 added to the end).  Quit MPEG Streamclip. In iMovie drag your new AIFF file to the project timeline.

  • I want to clip an voiceover audio track to seperate the audio into two tracks. How do I do that in iMovie 09?

    Hi everyone,
I'm trying to take one voiceover audio track and seperate into two tracks so I can have a timed pause in between the two tracks. In HD I could clip the audio tracks and move them. What can I do in iMovie 09?
    Thank you

I would duplicate the project. Then delete everything except the portion with the VoiceOver.
Then Share/Export Using QuickTime as Sound to AIFF. Then edit it in GarageBand.

  • How to export audio track from iMovie '11

I found that the sound from the video recording of a live band worked pretty well for my purposes (listening for problems). But I don't need the video itself for some things. Is it possible to just grab the audio from the video and save it as just a sound file? I tried messing with iMovie but couldn't figure out a way yet.

You can detach the audio then copy and paste it around if you have other clips in the time line but if you want all the audio from a clip or group of clips put them in a project and do a custom QT export and export "Sound to AIFF file". Import that as an audio track in iTunes or drag directly on to another movie clip.

  • How to Copy Audio Track onto 2nd Channel in iMovie '08

    Hello,
Boy, I made a big mistake while recording video of my in-laws 50th wedding anniversary. I accidentally recorded onto audio track #1 ONLY. Track #2 is empty. Consequently, I have audio in one speaker. Oops! It's an hour's worth of great 1080i HD footage, too.
I've done my edits, but is there a way to copy and paste the audio from one track to the other track? I know in Final Cut it can be done, but I don't have a copy. I'm only able to use iMovie '08 at this point. If the solution is in the iMovie help section, please let me know what the search word(s) is so I can go to it. I looked but couldn't find anything.
    Huge thanks,
    Jack

    audio processing in iM08 is .. +very basic+ ..
the intended workflow is, to Share the project via MediaBrowser to Garageband .. which offers with its many tracks and pan controler to create a 'double channel mono'

  • Can I lay down audio tracks in imovie 09 without a visual clip?

I tried this in imovie 08 with no such luck, and had to get imovie HD, which allowed me to lay down a music bed (without having a visual) and then add video to match the music....(i.e. MTV clips)....Now I'm considering purchase of a Panasonic DMC SZ3 but I'm told I must get imovie 09 in order to import AVCHD lite. Question is, does imovie 09 allow the recording of audio without a video track....or if it doesn't, can I import the video from the Panasonic DMC SZ3 using imovie 09 and then import those clips to imovie HD in order to match the visuals with an existing music bed? Or do I have to buy final cut? (is final cut compatible with the DMC SZ3?)
    Thanks for all replies.

In iMovie 09 you can add a track from iTunes before you add any video or photo tracks. This is how you add beat markers. You add the track, place beat markers where you want, the add video which snaps to the beat markers.
If you want to record a voice track before adding video, I don't think so, but I have never tried it. You can always record a voice track in Garageband and drag it in same as a music track.

  • Replacing Audio Track on iMovie 10.0.6 on Yosemite

I have a movie from a school concert (from a DSLR) that I have imported into iMove. I simply want to replace the iMove audio track with the TASCAM digital audio track that I recorded separately. In researching this on the web and here on the discussion posts it appears that I need to "detach audio" from the movie in iMove and then (somehow) import my replacement.wav file.
The PROBLEM is that the "Modify --> Detach Audio" menu item is greyed out - in fact most of the "Join Clips", "Split Clip", etc. menu items are greyed out.
How do I use these menus to replace the audio track in my iMovie clip?
Right now iMovie is just a "Quicktime Player" unless I can get some of this functionality out of "menu greyed out space" and into "useable function space".
    Looking for some basic guidance.
    Thanks

Looks like I was trying to detach the audio from the movie clip in the media library.......so iMovie is now much more than a Quicktime player!!! After selecting the movie clip in the movie project I was able to:
detach the audio from the movie using the Modify menu selection
drag and drop my replacement.wav file onto the "1/8th notes icon" as an audio track
since the movie and the .wav file both had the same audio, amazingly it looks like iMovie may correlated the audio tracks and lined my replacement.wav file up with the beginning of the clip (or I started the DSLR and TASCAM at exactly the same time which is statistically possible but not likely).
Excellent Job Apple - iMove works great.

  • HOW TO ADD MULTIPLE AUDIO TRACKS - iMovie '11

I'm having trouble adding multiple audio tracks in iMovie 11.  I already have an audio track embedded with the video and a separate music track under.  I wish to extend the music track further but need to cut it off at a certain point.  I tried just adding the 2nd music track under the first but when I 'drop' the track it doesn't show up anywhere.  Any ideas or work arounds will be helpful.  Thanks.

you have to drag the music-clip onto a video-clip - then, iM will add it automatically upon/under the other ones ...
