IMovie .DV Video Clipping and Name Editing

Hi,
I have a Sony DCR-TRV11 from 2000 and a bunch of old miniDV tapes of great memories. After transferring my tapes using iMovie's Import From Camera function through FireWire, the videos were organized by date under different iMovie events.
I double clicked each iMovie event name and changed it to match the subject of the clips inside the event. Also, there were some spots where I accidentally recorded a blank wall for several minutes, which I cropped out from within in the event library window, not the iMovie project window.
I know that iMovie imports DV video at full resolution and saves the videos with a .dv extension. And I realized that doing edits and exporting means that there will be quality loss due to compression (I'm not a pro at this). However, by changing just the event names, and cropping out blank video from within the event library window and not the project window, does that affect the lossless .dv files imported? And does simply viewing the videos in iMovie do anything to degrade quality? I want to make sure everything is lossless, exactly as the videos were on tape.
I realize some of my questions may seem ridiculous but I just want to preserve these videos the best way I can, thanks!!

Hi
A. iMovie'08 to 11
- imports .dv OK - as I read it
B. Moving a clip from Event's to Project't
- the Project will lose - every second line in the picture - to me a severe loss
C. Still original material in iMovie Event's should be un-harmed
D. If You want a DVD with best possibly quality (still DVDs are compressed as standard)
- Either import directly from Camera to iDVD - MagicDVD or OneStepDVD
- Use iMovie HD6 or FinalCut any version - as they can handle interlaced Video as is on Your miniDV tapes
My penny to this - Bengt W

Can now with imovie 1.2.2 and iOS5 edit 1080p high definition video from DSLR cameras like the EOS 5D Mark II on ipad 2?.
That would be great, you would open the door to professional video editing ipad 2. Is there an accepted camera list?.

There does not appear to be a list yet.

  • How can I match sound quality between video clips and audio clips?

    Hi guys,
First of all let me say that I enjoy using the latest Media Encoder. However, as a novice, I have two related problems.
1.I am recording video to use with PowerPoint slides in Adobe Captivate. I am encoding the video with best quality FLV. This produces very good video,
but with a degraded audio track, even though I had filtered the audio in soundbooth. The post encoding sounds like it did before Soundbooth corrections.
    2. Some of the video recording has been set cut into audio clips to be used as background narration behind PowerPoint. The logic behind this is: that if both are
recorded at the same time, the voice quality should match.
This is far from the outcome. I have tried MP3 for the audio which of course produced the best sound- but is entirely unlike the rest of the video. I have also encoded the audio with Windows Waveform preset figuring that since the soundbooth edit was a .wav file, that there should be a reasonable match. Wrong again!
So, the audio quality of all clips is poor, and the difference between the encoded video clips, and the audio encoded clips spoils the otherwise professional result in Captivate.
Please help, all of you experts.

    Thank you.
    OS Windows 7 x 64; 3.2 MHz; 2 TB; 12 GB Ram-9GB ram allocated to Adobe.
    My process is this:
    1. The whole video and audio narration material is shot in one continuous video sesseion.
    2. The microphone is only mono, but the camera is set to stereo. Noone can work out how to change the camera to mono.
    3. In Premiere Pro 5, I select render and replace in SoundBooth.
    4. In Soundbooth, I choose Add Multichannels.
    5. In Multichannels, I delete the unwanted noisy channel, and any other unused channels.
    6. With the remaining mono channel, I then select Export and Save As option, then Stereo.
    7. Next I edit the stereo channels as needed.
    8. The imported stereo won't automatically update in Premiere Pro, so in PPR I import the new edited stereo track.
    9. I test this track in PPR, to check that it is playing R & L channels. It is. OK.
10 On the timeline, I proceed to cut apart this single stereo wavelength .
11.These clips are saved as Video, or Audio subclips.
12 From the video subclips, I export to Media Encoder, and choose either FLV4 match attributes (High Q). This I modify to custom 2 pass (Custom save).
The summary says that this is saved to MP3 Stereo.
    13. I import this into Captivate 5, but the Video outcome is Left channel only. I have tested this on Media Player/Real Player where it is also L channel only.
    14. I export my Audio subclips to Media player, and select MP3 option and this summary also reports stereo. The Audio outcome is stereo, when played in any player and in Captivate 5.
I cannot understand how a single, continuous track edited uniformly in Soundbooth to stereo, can produce different outcomes in Media player.
I would so appreciate a solution to this problem, because, in the Captivate 5 e-learning production, the switch between stereo audio (behind PowerPoints), and l. channel video is distracting. Naturally, the l. channel only is a thin sound. It is as if it had never been edited in SoundBooth at all.

  • Inserting video clip and have both audios at once

Hi everyone, hopefully somone can help answer my question.  My friend has a video blog and the person who used to do all of his technical stuff is no longer with him, so he's trying to figure it all out, and I figured I'd try to help him.
In iMovie, does anyone know how to insert a video clip into the main video clip and have the inserted video being shown on the screen but the audio of both videos playing at the same time, with no break in continuity of the main video's audio?  Then, how to transition from the inserted video with both audios playing at the same time back to just the main video, again with no breaks in audio continuity?  I know it's possible on FinalCut Pro, because that is what his tech person used, but for some reason that program freezes my friend's computer, so he's stuck with iMovie for now.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!  Thanks!

Thanks for your reply devbear11.  You ALMOST got what I was asking for.  I'm sorry if my wording is confusing, lol.  Everything you said is great, EXCEPT that  I want to KEEP the audio on the inserted video in ADDITION to the audio on the original clip.  So to break it down....
    - Main video clip is playing.
    - Segue into the inserted video clip.  Have the screen be showing the inserted video clip and have it be playing it's own audio, WITHOUT interrupting the audio of the original/main video.
    - Inserted video clip plays on the screen and you hear both the audio of the inserted video clip in addition to whatever my friend is saying on the main audio....To give you an example, my friend blogs about figure skating.  So he will be discussing a competition and the screen is showing him at his desk talking about the different skaters.  While he is discussing a certain skater, he may input a clip of their performance and you will see and hear them skating to their music, but still be able to hear him discussing it uninterrupted in the background.
    - Once the inserted clip ends, the video switches back to my friend at his desk, with his commentary uninterrupted.
    Am I making sense? lol

  • How do I adjust video clip and audio start times?

I cant figure out how to adjust the start time of video clips and songs.  I want my music and video clips to start at different times. I am trying to have music and pictures start at the same time at the begining of the movie then transition into my videos at a specific time.   Also i am wondering if there is a way to combine the whole video and image segment into one block and be able to shift it up and down the timeline?  Does anyone know how to do this?  Thanks

instead of adding music to the background, 'stick' the music-clip to your video clip => the music appears as a green bar, you can move, shorten etc as any other clip.
…  if there is a way to combine the whole video and image segment into one block and be able to shift it up and down the timeline?  …
    not in iMovie.

  • Audio from video clip and layering

ok, I need help! I finally figured out how to take audio from a video clip and place it over pictures or layer it over other audio. Now, I want to start with a video clip, it happens to be an interview, cut away to some pictures or other muted video, and come back to the interview, all with the audio playing the whole time and lined up correctly....how do i do this? THANKS!!

    Thanks David
    I found this here http://www.apple.com/findouthow/movies/#tutorial=extendaudio
To extend audio across multiple clips:
    1. In the Project area, select the clip that contains the audio you’d like to extend into a second clip. Select the last few seconds of the first clip that contain the audio you want.
    2. To split the first clip, choose Edit > Split Clip.
    3. Control-click the selected clip and choose “Reveal in Event Browser.”
    4. In the Event browser, Command-Shift-drag the clip to extract the audio and place it at the start of the next clip.
    5. Delete the video portion of the clip you split in step 2.
Because you’ve extracted the audio from exactly the part of the clip you split, the audio seamlessly plays across the next shot
I am going to try this tonight and see how easy it is

  • Can anyone help me figure why there is a popping sound when I move from an iphoto still image to a new video clip?  The sound has been removed from the video clips and there is another soundtrack underneath it all.  Help?

My current project is like many I have created in the past.  I have removed the sound from my video clips and laid another soundtrack under the entire project.  Now, when I add an iphoto still image to the project, when it goes back into video there is a popping sound.  I've never had this happen in the past and have made many projects in the past just like this one.  Any way to troubleshoot this issue?  Thanks so much for your help.

  • Need to remove video clip and save audio track.

We are trying to remove a segment of video clip and save the audio track that goes with it.    We intend to fill that open segment with transitions of still photos, all the while allowing the narrator, who has now been "clipped" to keep speaking.
We are using CS3 Premier Pro.
Any advise would be greatly appreciated!   Thanks for your wisdom...

    Mary,
I find that just Alt-clicking on the Video and hitting Delete to be the quickest method. That does exactly the same as Unlinking, with two keystrokes - Atl-click Video, Del key.
    Hope that helps,

  • Managing Video Clips and HD Storage; Psychedelic stripes when iMovie freezs

I have read the posts on subj, but wanted to clarify the ff:
As someone suggested, good idea to save the original clips and just copy/paste them into timeline so that i can edit them as much as I want. Have done so but obviously taking up much space. Once I complete with my Project (but have NOT shared it yet with iDvd NOR imported them into iDVD):
    1) can i now delete all the original clips in the Clips Pane? (it wont be like iPhoto where after deleting the pix, the pix are lost from the Books, or other projects?)
    2) how do i save the original clips in the Clips Pane to a DVD. Do i use Export on iMovie? Or do i use Import from iDVD?
    3) if I am working on several Projects, say Project 1 and Project 2, but want to use the Clips from Clips Pane in Project 1 in Project 2, how do I do that? In other words, can I make iMovie Project 1 as the repository of all my imported video clips (but not make any movie from it), then use those clips for iMovie Project 2, 3, 4 etc....... and how do I do that?
    4) Further to #3, say I really wanted to end up with just one movie - say Europe Trip, but because I wanted to work on more manageable file sizes, I split them up so I have Project 1 say Paris, Project 2 say Italy etc. fearing that iMovie cannot handle too big file sizes. I was thinking of consolidating them all thru iDVD but what I expect would happen is that since I make chapters on iMovie, once I import Paris Project and Italy Project into one movie in iDVD, I will end up having two chapters or Chapter 1, two of Chapter 2, etc. Is there a way of avoiding that?
I suppose you an guess at my current predicament. My file sizes are just getting bigger and I have the same clips on Project 1 as I have in Project 2 and 3 when they all actually pertain to the same Europe trip that I want to make One movie on.
Finally iMovie often freezes on me and then the whole picture in the screen becomes one big colored zig zag stripes. I cannot playback or do other commands. The only way to get rid of it is if I reboot my iMac. I didnt have this problem before on my MBP. Could it be bec of Leopard in my iMac?
Thanks in advance to whoever responds.
    Cheers

It really shouldn't take very long to load video clips. It might take a long time to generate thumbnails the first time through, but from then on, it is lightning quick, because you are only shooting a few movies between times you open imovie.
While I haven't had the problem you describe, some other people have reported a similar problem.
Imagine a scenario where iMovie generates all the thumbnails and caches that it needs, but is unable to save them to disk. In this case, when you restart iMovie the next time, it would have to start from scratch and generate all the thumbnails again. This would certainly slow things down.
That scenario could happen if your disk permissions are in need of repair. You can repair permissions by using Disk Utility, which is in your Applications/Utilities folder. It is a good idea to repair permissions periodically, and certainly every time you update OSX.
I repair permissions every night as part of a script that runs when I do an unattended SuperDuper backup late at night. This is probably overkill, but at least I never have to worry about it.
Personally, I have several terabytes of movies in iMovie, and everything runs quickly. Most of my events are camcorder movies which are stored in iMovie. However, I have hundreds of short clips taken by still cameras, and I leave these in iPhoto.

  • Have accidentally deleted video clips and now an iMovie project won't play (did initially after deletion but no longer). Is there any way to rectify this? I have a very upset daughter as the video was her holiday memories....

I have deleted the video clips used to make an iMovie project as I thought the bits usedt were saved as part of the iMovie project. Initially the project still played post deletion. However it is no longer working as it says it can't find the video clips. Is this rescuable?

There's no harm in looking inside the Trash folder.
When a file or folder is deleted, it is moved into the Trash folder to give you a chance to recover it if it was deleted by mistake. Of course that means Trash folder could grow large as time goes and more files are deleted.
You can recover your movies if they are still in the trash.
You should also empty the trash if you think you don't need the files in it to free up disk space.

  • New and stupid. I need to capture video clips and play them on an iPad2.

I've been searching the internet for hours and I can't find an easy way to do this.  I am working on a project for my boss so this is crucial.
I have three large video files.  I need to several capture portions of each video and get them onto his iPad so he can view them.
The video files are currently in .asf format.  I downloaded Windows Live Movie Maker and can edit the videos in that program, but I cannot convert them into a proper format with this program.  So, I found a program online that will convert the clips into mpeg4 format.  I can convert them, view and play them in iTunes but I can't transfer them to his iPad.
Personally, I have an iPhone 4 and I am fairly computer literate so I have an understanding of the iPad and can function quite well on my computer.  But, I just can't get this to work.
    Please help.

I am sorry about the VLC suggestion. They do have an Ipad version(http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-ios.html) but probably for Jailbroken units only.
In my defense of poor research i have to say that some time ago it was actually possible to download it from the app store which is why i have VLC on my old Ipod.
If you have to convert i can recommend "handbrake" which is actually a free ripper but it will convert many file formats into predefined settings for different gadgets amongst them Ipad.

  • Trimming video clips and "lightening them up."

Hi, if anyone can answer this for me, I'd appreciate it!
I've got a 14GB video clip in a iMovie file, and I want to cut and paste a small part of it into another file. When I try, the small clip still appears to be 14 GB and would take 130 minutes to paste into the new file. Is there any way to lighten up these clips so they can be moved quicker? I'm using a new MacBookPro.
Thanks for your time and help.

I take it video quality will remain the same. I'll try it out right away.
.. it should be the same as done with copy/paste...

  • IMovie HD Video clip question.

    Hi Again,
I have nottest in iMovie HD 5 after I caputer my home movie to my ext. firewire hard drive. When I click to look at it theres a pop box that tells me that it is up dateing clip or some along thoughs lines. It only seem to do it that first time and then when I caputer new clips it will not do it on them. Is there something rong with my computer or iMovie HD.Thanks.

Ok this is very crazy to me. I did a test with my camcorder why can I captuer video to my computer with my Canon min DV. I can then see my clip right then to play it back and it dose not say its updateing the file when I click on it. Also I can just click any were in iMovie hd v5 and it tells me it updating a file. Also when I captuer off my Director's Cut 2 video convertor box whitch I am having meny crazy probloms with but anyway. I am not aboul to click right on the clip with out it saying its udateing the file. I would like to know what is up with this and why dose it only do this to the first video clip I captuer but not to all the other clips that come after its crazy. Am I the only one who seems to have this crazy junk happening. I have done alot of checking on this newsgroup with know luck. Just to see if I could find someone that is having truble like this its crazy. Am I right in think that my video convertor box takes the video from my VCR and then from there makes it then from analog to DV or Digatal or something like that so that it can be put in to my computer. I am wondering why I have to update the VCR captuer movie clip to play them back though its only one I have to do this to. But I do not have to with my DV cam what gives.
