IMovie DVD Cannot be read by Bluray Player

How to resolve a problem with getting a DVD (with a correct DVD type) to play on a Samsung Bluray player that has IMovie files burned to it?  The problem is not the DVD type.  Could it be the settings for burning the DVD?

My Macbook does not have iDVD app.  There is a "Share" option in iMovie that allows you to export it to QuickTime as an mp4 (mpeg) file.  From there I used a free DVD burn app (iburn) that I downloaded, that did not offer any menu options other than to burn the video to DVD.  The DVD will play the video on the Macbook, but not my Samsung Bluray player.  So, my friend told me to convert the files to .mov, because Samsung does not recognize the other file types (based on their website specs).  I did that, but, it still didn't play on my bluray player.  It did however, play on my friends 2 players -- one of which happens to be a bluray player.  We then thought it might be the DVD type and tried every DVD type that my bluray manual says are ok.  Even though, my bluray manual says DVD+RW cannot play, it will play a slideshow that I created in iPhoto!  So, now I am wondering if the issue is still the file type OR perhaps, I need to use a DVD burner that will allow me to select specific options that might make a difference.  If the burner options don't matter, why then do DVD burners that are NOT free have options from which to choose?  Perhaps, there is something within those options that could help the situation.  I don't know.  I am frustrated and at a complete loss at this point.  Any thoughts??

  • Dvd cannot be read

Maybe this is a problem with my dvd camcorder (canon dc210) but sometimes I cannot get adobe elements to copy dvd files. I go to download media and it just sits there and then an error comes up and says cannot obtain files from dvd
I also cannot copy the .vob files to desktop, folder etc.
    Anybody run into this problem?

Actually, I've had the same problem. My step mother gave me 3 holiday DVDs to edit for her, all recorded on her new camcorder. All are listed as finalized. All 3 will play beautifully all the way through on my desktop, laptop, dvd player and blu ray player. However, I had a HECK of a time copying the main VOB file to my computer off of all of the disks. I've tried a total of 5 DVD drives. I managed, after careful cleaning, to get the files off of two of the, but one just will not work. I get a file error every time. But it still plays perfectly.
Trying the disc copy method to resolve this now, but i wanted to point out that this is happening to someone else!

    Hello TchrDi,
I suggest this article named Archived - iDVD: Troubleshooting issues with burning discs found here http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1583.
It is pretty lengthy, but also pretty thorough.

How do I export an iMovie '13 to a dvd that will read on a DVD video player?

Use iDVD to do it. Select and click "Share" at the top of the window in the menu bar of iMovie, and you can find "iDVD". But  have you got iDVD installed on your Mac? If not, please check https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-4821 to reinstall it. If you have no iDVD installed and don't want to reinstall it either, you can use other DVD creator software to help you burn iMovie to DVD.

  • My DVD plays on my Mac and new BluRay player, but not on my TV

I burned a DVD with three mp4 movies. The movies play fine in QuickTime, and the DVD plays without a problem on my Mac. It also plays correctly on a newer BluRay player. However, when I try to play the DVD on an older DVD player (about 3 years old), I have problems. The DVD starts OK, and I can navigate the menu choices. However, I find that after about a minute, the player simply freezes, and I can't play or change anything. I tried burning a new DVD with a different format, but the same thing happened. I think the problem might just be that my DVD player is too old, but I wondered if there is a setting in iDVD to be compatible with older players. Any help would be appreciated!

I tried burning a new DVD with a different format
I'm not sure you mean because ALL video DVDs are in multiplexed MPG-2 format.
I suspect your set-top DVD player doesn't 'like' writable' media (it used to be fairly common). You might try using a DVD cleaning disc in case there is any dust over the player optical system.

  • Cannot copy imovie DVD to a DVD recorder

I made some still images into a movie clip using imovie HD. Then I burned the clip to a standard definition dvd. The DVD will play on all my DVD players and recorders. Of course, since the DVD is DVD-R, Video mode, it cannot normally be copied on some recorders. Could not get a DVD-RW, to copy to my recorder hard drive either in the Video mode or the VR mode. One of my DVD recorder/players allows me to work around this and copy a DVD-R, Video mode DVD. However, this procedure would require me to copy the imovie clips to DVD, copy the dvd to the dvd recorder hard drive, then copy the clip from the hard drive to another dvd, and use that copy in my other recorder, which would then be able to copy it for combining the clips with other movies. Wastes two DVDs and is very complicated and time consuming.
So, to try and simplify the process I tried to copy the imovie DVD back to my video camera, JVC GMX-157, then copy from the camera to my recorder hard drive for combining the clips with other movies. However, when I try to copy to my video camera I get the message that the disc is copyright protected. Anybody got any idea why is this happening on my homemovie creations???

No, that's a mystery, since iDVD cannot make copy-protected DVDs!
I have no experience with what you are attempting, but have you tried feeding the DVD directly from your Mac to the DVD Recorder via the usual cables?

  • DVD+R works on Mac and Playstation but not a DVD or Bluray Player

I converted old VHS tapes to DVD for my Grandma, and I checked to make sure they worked using my Mac and Playstation. When I gave it to her neither her DVD or Bluray Player reads it.  Is there a way to fix this?   Also I had converted a wedding to dvd (using the same DVD+R) and the person said it works fine on their DVD player.
So do I need to own both +R and  -R?

Found a solution to the problem. The permissions for the firefox.app file were not set to admin - read-write. After adding this permission using the get info menu item when right clicking the file name in the applications folder, the tab now automatically opens when clicking on Email link.

Go to the Map mode in your iDVD project and make sure the blue bin at the left is empty.  That's where you drag slideshows to if you want the DVD to open immediately to that slideshow and bypass the menu.
If there is an item in there drag it out.

  • DVD won't play back in bluray player

I just created a DVD in DVD SP, about 5 mins long with audio. It plays back beautifully on the computer, but my sony bluray player doesn't recognize it at all. I haven't tried on a standard DVD player, but I don't see how that would help. A previously made DVD plays fine on the player. Any thoughts?
    Thanks
    Shelley

    Dear Shawn,
Still no good. In a render last night, weirdly, even in my Mac the disk was unreadable and the warning said it was blank, but I rendered again and it works fine on the Mac. But on my SONY player, nothing.
I changed DVD SP to standard in the Preferences and re-created the project from scratch. I used the DVD: Best Quality 90 minutes setting with no changes. Here is the breakdown:
    Name: MPEG-2 6.2Mbps 2-pass
Description: Fits up to 90 minutes of video with Dolby Digital audio at 192 Kbps or 60 minutes with AIFF audio on a DVD-5
    File Extension: m2v
Estimated size: 2.79 GB/hour of source
    Type: MPEG-2 video elementary stream
              Usage:SD DVD
    Video Encoder
              Format: M2V
              Width and Height: Automatic
              Pixel aspect ratio: Default
              Crop: None
              Padding: None
              Frame rate: (100% of source)
              Frame Controls: Automatically selected: Off
              Start timecode from source
              Aspect ratio: Automatic
                        Selected 16:9
              Field dominance: Automatic
              Average bit rate: 6.2 (Mbps)
              2 Pass VBR enabled
                        Maximum bit rate: 7.7 (Mbps)
              High quality
              Best motion estimation
Closed GOP Size: 1/2 second, Structure: IBBP
              DVD Studio Pro meta-data enabled
I am at my wits' end. I have two weeks to get this done for a memorial for my late father so you see my desperation.
Do you have any possibilities left? I'd go ahead and sign up for the Pro classes at the Apple Store, but in NYC I'm afraid I wouldn't even get to see anyone in time for FCP and its suite.
    Thank you for any advice.

  • Slideshow consisting of programmed image sequences using a BluRay player?

I posted this is iPhoto, and the only response suggested I try Keynote. So here goes.
My partner has just moved from slides to digital (using my camera). She has often been asked to show her slides, and now that she has digital photos, it's up to me to make sure she can present them using a HD digital projector driven from a Bluray player. No problem there, except I'd like to take advantage of digital techniques to brighten up the shows, but don't want to go as far as preprogramming them totally. The shows will remain under manual control (press button – next image; press button - next image) while she talks about the images, or simply presents them and let the images themselves do the talking. I hope to add a bit extra, and infuse some of the images with digital magic.
I want to set up a series of images that will be shown in sequence, with a 2-5 second dissolve between images. Those images (all 1920 x 1080) may be pure stills, or there may be some movement (pans, zooms) already programmed, or they may be HD Quicktime movies. However, these "images" will dissolve to the next image only when a button is pressed -- and this could be at any time-point while the image is being displayed. If a particular image reaches its endpoint (finished a pan, for example), the image just sits there waiting for the button to be pressed. For example, a show might go like this:
Image 1 - Still. (Press button for dissolve to next image)
Image 2 - Still with preset zoom-in. (Press button for dissolve to next image, even if zoom not finished)
Image 3 - Still with pan. (Press button for dissolve to next image, even if pan not finished)
Image 4 - Short Quicktime movie. (Press button…)
    Image 5 - Still. (Press button…)
Basically, the show will be a sequence of images -- still or in motion -- but the next in sequence comes up only when a button is pressed.
A further complication: I don't trust computers to do a live show. I would rather use a dedicated player, like a Bluray player, to feed the info direct to the projector. Whatever software I use, it has to be able to export the show either as one large file, or a series of files, that I can put onto a disk and be playable by a BluRay player. The file type required will depend on the make and model of the BluRay player used, but I hoping it will be Quicktime H.264 format.
    Two questions:
Q1: Is Keynote the software for me, or should I be looking for something else?
Q2: Will I be able to use a BluRay player, or will a laptop be necessary?

Thanks for the reply, Kelly. Am I correct in saying that the methods suggested in your reply require a computer, running either QT or Keynote, to drive the digital projector? Whereas I'd really prefer to use a standalone BluRay player.
Thinking about this a bit more, what I want is to play back a series of DVD-style "chapters" (stills, stills with pans, and video) but in 1920 x 1080 format, and whenever I press "forward" the output jumps to the next chapter and cross-dissolves while doing so. I might have to look into BluRay to see if cross-dissolve (at any time-point) from one chapter to the next is a part of the BluRay specification, or can be authored-in somehow.
Finally, what capabilities does Keynote have that a video-editing program like Final Cut would not have? This slide-show thing is really a precursor to generating HD audio-visuals, and I assume that if Final Cut can be used to generate, from raw footage, a Hollywood-type movie from woe to go, that it would encompass all that Keynote could do. So, if I had Final Cut, would Keynote be of any use to me?

  • No Go With Samsung BluRay Player

HD DVD encoded out of DVDSP works fine sans menu with Toshiba player, but not with the Samsung BluRay player.
I don't know if a h.264 encode would work with the Samsung.
    Anybody else

    Mikey M.
There are unfortunately TWO blue laser formats--blu-ray and HD-DVD. The laser pit created is different in size between the two. DVDSP is capable of creating HD-DVD content, but there are no HD-DVD burners, and probably won't be until end of this year or into 2007.
There are blu-ray burners, but DVDSP does not currently support authoring content for that format. Therefore, there isn't a way for you to get from a to z.
You can currently create a straight forward video play only (and mpeg2 codec only) HD-DVD title, burn it to standard red laser media (not an officially supported format) and get it to play on the new Toshiba HD-DVD player. It will not play on a Blu-Ray player, because it's a rival format for one; and two, it's not compiled in a way that the player is set up to read it. It would be like putting a DVD-Audio disc into a standard dvd player--it won't be able to read it.
By the time the format war is 'over', we'll be on to the next one (format, and probably 'war' over that).

  • What format shiould i burn dvd in to play in blueray player? Using MacX DVD Ripper Pro and Handbrake

what format should i burn dvd in to play in blueray player? Using MacX DVD Ripper Pro and Handbrake

MacX DVD Ripper Pro and Handbrake
Neither is suitable for burning DVDs or BluRay media. They are DVD rippers/converters, not DVD authoring tools.  Handbrake doesn't produce any format suitable for DVD Authoring.   And while MacDVD Ripper can create .mov files even that's not a guarantee the file can be used for DVD authoring.  You need DVD Authoring software like Roxio Toast to burn DVDs or BluRay disks.
Most BluRay players can play both standard def DVDs and high def BluRay disks.  Which kind do you want to burn?  And what exactly is your source media (video) that you want to burn?
And if you want to burn BluRay disks, you need a BluRay burner.

  • EMac External LACIE DVD Drive not reading.

eMac External LACIE DVD Drive not reading.
    eMac 700 MHz running OS X 4.4
Came without DVD or modem internal
    Has 256mb memory
Bought a used Lacie 1394 Firewire DVR External.
Was able to burn DVD’s and CD’s with Toast 6 Light.
Cannot find the “DVD Player” on the hard drive.
    It will read data DVD.
eMac will not read any movies burnt or bought.
I was told I probably need more memory?
Thought running IDVD would fix the problem.
    No Soap.
This machine was giving external modem problems before Tiger was installed.
Before we spend more money or just get ride of the eMac.
    What is the DVD problem?
This same Lacie burner reads and writes DVD and CD fine with our iMac 450 DV 320mb memory. Running 9.2 and X.3

OS X 10.3.x / 10.4.x natively support data burning to external DVD drives but video payback requires software such as iDVD which isn't installed by default on models without an internal DVD drive (the installer sees no internal drive and thinks it's unnecessary). Try downloading VLC Player and see if that will let you play movies.
