Imovie events vs projects vs movies

In imovie 10, they have ".  In the older versions I understood events to mean raw clips that could be used to make projects (aka movies).
The new version is confusing because evebts and projects are not differentiated - there is one folder called a "library" and undet that are a bunch of folders that contain all the clips.
How can I separate all the raw clips from the movies that I made? Also, there is an option to "make new move" but not "make a new project", so obviously a movie is different than a project.
Can anyone out there help sort out this confusion?

Rather than having a separate Event Library and Project Library, the new version of iMovie combines them.
You can identify the Projects by the "clapboard" frame around them.
Each Project must be associated with a specific Event (they can still use clips from any other Event) and will be grouped with that Event in the Library. You can't separate the two.
In iMovie there are two kinds of Project you can make - Movies and Trailers. The File menu has separate commands for these two different kinds of Projects.

  • My external hard drive holding half my iMovie events and projects has crashed: how do I restore the events from another source?

My external hard drive holding half my iMovie events and projects has become corrupted.  I have now downloaded all the same files (from a backup in the cloud) to another hard drive - but iMovie is not "seeing" those events or movies in that external hard drive.  Q1 Is there a way of rectifying that?  (I.e. telling iMovie to point to the relevant folders or files on the new external hard drive)
Q2 I have a TimeMachine backup of the corrupted drive in another drive which i keep elsewhere.  Is it worth me attempting to restore from that backup? And if so where can I restore to (as the original external drive is corrupted) and how do i go about that restore process so that the events and projects re-appear?
thanks in advance for your help.  (I thought i would check re Q2 before embarking on the wrong method!)

When I right click on an image, then went to Go to Folder in Library, it pulls up the new external hard drive where I made the new link. When I try to work on the photos, the image still says file image is offline or missing. When I right click on the image to Show in Finder, it says the image could not be used because the original file could not be found. I eventually did click on their locate and found the image. When I linked those two together, a few minutes later ALL the "?" went missing and now IT WORKS!!!!
    That was weird!
Hope this helps someone else in my predicament.

  • Copy iMovie events and projects to SD card

I have my iMovie events and projects folders on and SD card, and I can copy it to the Movies folder, but I can't copy iMovie events and projects to the SD card, it just shows a white cross:
Is there any way to copy those folders to the SD card?

    Hi
    a. NEVER do this via DeskTop - Has to be done in iMovie'08 or 09
    b. external hard disk - HAS TO BE Mac OS Extended formatted
UNIX/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange - WILL NOT WORK
(FireWire - is of *Great Value* - though USB/USB2 performs badly)
    c. In iMovie'09 You can movie iMovie Projects and iMovie Events
(in iMovie'08 only iMovie Events - most important - takes most space)
    d. In Events window in iMovie - top right hand corner - Here You see a small
    sign eg a hard disk.
By clicking on this - material in window will change from Year view to hard disk
    view
Now drag one folder eg 2010 to the other hard disk
iMovie will now ask You if You want a Copy or a full Move
    e. In iMovie'09 - same logic goes for moving of Projects

  • Backing up iMovie Events and Projects As Opposed to Moving Them

Hi all. I'd like to make some backups of my iMovie events and projects. I read on the Apple site that the best way to do this is through iMovie itself and not the Finder. I should drag events to an external hard drive inside the iMovie window. When I do this, does it copy the event to the drive, or does it move it to the drive. I'd rather have a copy since I'm trying to make a backup. Also, how would I do this for projects to make a backup?
    2) If I already copied my Events and Projects folder to an external drive, would I be able to use these in the future? Would I just place them inside my Movies folder under user and launch iMovie. These just seems easier in the event that everything crashed. Am I missing something here? It seems like it would be easier just to copy these two folders everytime, and save them in case of a hard drive crash.
    Thanks.

If you drag your Projects folder over to the external drive icon in the Project Library, a pop-up window will give you the option of just duplicating the Project or getting the Project + associated Events too. I suggest going with the copy of Projects + Events to get a real duplicate backup of your iMovie project. By default iMovie assumes you want a copy.
If you want to move a Project/Events combo, you would hold down the ⌘ Command key and drag the project to the external drive icon in the Project Library.
Any time you want a backup, just drag that project folder to the external drive icon, but just make sure you do it regularly. Otherwise you'll end up with an older incomplete previous version of the project because the backup is based on an action you have to remember to do.
If you already dragged those folders over outside of iMovie, it's unlikely iMovie will be able to see or find those files. You would have to drag them back to the iMovies folders inside your Movies folder. So there's an extra step involved. And if you do that regularly, and don't mind dragging files back into the iMovies folders, that will work too. On the Mac, there's always more than one way to do things, so do what makes sense to you.

  • I want to back up2 hard drives with imovie events and projects as well as 2 desktops. Is TC the best way to do that

I want to back up 2 hard drives with imovie events and projects as well as 2 desktops. Is TC the best way to do that? Also, I already have a wireless network. Does this create a 2nd one or is it possible to just use it for the backup function?

Time Machine can do that, if your Time Capsule is large enough (see #1 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions).
For backing-up multple HDs on a single Mac, see #32 in that same link.
If by "2 desktops" you mean 2 separate user accounts on the same Mac, see #26 there.   If you mean 2 Macs, see #33.
You might also want to review the Time Machine Tutorial.

  • Location of iMovie Events and Projects

Is there some way to reset the default location for the Events & Projects? I'd like to be able to keep them on an external drive, but I can't seem to find the option to change it.
    Todd

I have a MacBook that has an external WD HD that has some iMovie events from another computer that have been copied onto it. What I want to be able to do is add those to my iMovie Events list, where the files themselves would remain on the external HD but I could access them for Projects in iMovie.
If originally "copied" to the external drive as described above, then the "Events" should be "visible" in your Event Library. If copied via the Finder in their proper folders at the root level, the Events should be visible to an opening iMovie '08 application if that drive is visible but the cache/thumbnails data may have to be trashed and reinitialized. (Have never check on this.) If copied via the finder Finder to different folders or at the wrong level, they will not be visible to iMovie '08.
When I go to import iMovie, I am given the option to save to the MacBook HD, or to save to the external HD. I choose save to eternal HD. At that point it looks like it is wanting to copy or move the files somewhere else on the external HD.
If you are being given the opportunity to create a new Event or add the files to an Event already available, then your are using one of the "Import" File menu options so, yes, you would be "moving" or "copying" the files -- not "merging" already created and recognized Events to the Event Library List.

  • Storing iMovie events and projects on a time capsule

All I can say is Apple hasn't made this one as easy as drag and drop.  Have tried many configuration options on my TC, keep getting a message that the iMovie can not be moved required by the OS?
    I'm open...

Thanks for joining the conversation Eric and your suggestion. I'd like to move as much as possible the new version of iMovie is eating my laptop hard drive up. Both the Event and Project Libs seem to be the culprits? Haven't tried moving things one at a time, kind of concerned I may break existing links. One of them has grown to over 28 gigs in like notice. I'm doing my best with importing only portions of video clips and not entire recorded segments.

  • Backing up iMovie events and projects in 10.0.1

I am new to a Mac and I have iMovie 10.0.1 and would like to back up my events and projects that I create to an external hard drive.  I don't see anywhere under File where I can create a backup or export my events or projects.
Would I use the Share and select File to copy it to my external hard drive?
Also, I have iMovie 10.0.1, what is iMovie '11? Is this an older version?
Any help would be greatly apprectiated.

    This stumped me, too.
Seems all the tutorials on the web (including Apple's) that explain this process using a previous iteration of iMovie.
After reading this post http://macmost.com/imovie-basics.html, I figured it out.
With iMovie open, choose File>Open Library>New. In the resulting dialog, name your new library file and choose the drive you want it on. Your new library will show up in the sidebar under the original one.
For example, I created a new library on a My Book external drive. This is how it looked in the iMove sidebar. The old library is circled in green; the new in red.
To move a project, select it under the original iMovie Library (not All Events or All Projects). Hold down the command key while dragging the project to your new iMovie Library. If you only want to copy the project, don't hold down the command key when dragging the files.

How can I burn a copy of my project to a DVD . I do not have IDVD because I have the Lion OS. I did purchase Wondershare for burning but it will not load the iMovie events or projects

There is no proper substitute for iDVD.
Why is there no iDVD on my new Mac?

    UPDATE & ADDENDUM:
But even though you can still buy iLife 11 that includes iDVD 7 from Amazon, Apple now make it difficult to install:
Poster jhb21939 posted this in another thread:
“when I attempted to load iDVD into a new iMac. A notice came up on the screen stating that the 'Authorisation Licence' had expired on 25 March this year (2012).
I contacted the Apple support team and eventually, I was told that the Licence had been withdrawn and could no longer be used.”
In other words Apple are now so adamant that we don’t use iDVD that they have tried to make it impossible to install.
In response, Old Toad posted this solution:
“You can still use it one all of your Macs.  If you get an invalid certificate message just set your Mac's clock to sometime before early 2011 and run the installer.  After you're done reset the time back to the correct time.” He added this comment:
“It began after iDVD and iWeb were discontued and they were dropped from the Apple Store. All I can think of is the certificate was set to expire after a certain time period after the intitial iLife disc was released.
I've been able to use the installer even without setting back the date.  I just clicked on the Continue button and it would work as expected.  For some it would not continue unless the date was set back.”
The latest anorexic iMacs just announced do not even include a CD drive! Proof positive that Apple virtually prohibit the use of DVDs - although the newly announced Mac Minis do include a Superdrive.
Yet, they still include iMovie! Heaven alone knows or understands what you are supposed to do with your newly edited masterpiece - except make a low quality version for YouTube?

  • How can I transfer iMovie Events and Projects ?

    Hey,
I wondered how I could transfer a single Imovie Event with all the unedited Clips inside, and the Project, which is in Work Process right now to another Mac, so that it opens in Imovie on the new mac and I can continue workingon it

  • Saving or Archiving iMovie events and projects

I realize that there are many iMovie questions on this site, but I can't quite find the answer that i'm looking for.
When I read different blogs etc. there are sort of two ways to archive your project and events to an external drive from iMovie:
    1) in iMovie - drag and drop to the new location
    2) in Finder - drag and drop the files from their resective folder.
    I have a few questions:
    1) iMovie:  When using iMovie 09 to move a project, I have chosen to copy the event files with it (rather then just the project file).  In the case that I have made a project (or more) that access the same events, iMovie copies these events a second time.  Therefore, if I copy the projects to my external drive, I will have more event data then originally captured.  (A side issue is that you can't copy mutiple files at once so you have to drag each one individually and then wait for the transfer).
    2) Finder: Some suggest that you can't move them in Finder as it messes up the files - they won't connect or remember their file associations - and they will get corrupted.  Is this true?  Can I just move them to my external hard drive and back, if I ever wanted to use them.  This seems far easier
Which is the best way to do this?  I am trying to free up space on my MBP, but would like to potentially use the footage at a later date.
Thanks in advance for your assistance.

Anyone? Also, will there be any issues finding my projects in iDVD? (Will post in the iDVD forum also)

  • IMovie events and projects on external HD but optimizes every time, how do I stop this?

iMovie 11 v 9.0.9 I have the events and clips on an external HD and every time I start iMovie it "optizimizes" then "processing Events".  How do I stop this repetitive and long process?

  • Move iMovie Events & Projects to a new Mac

I just got a new Mac and want to move my iMovie events and projects from the old machine to the new one. I seem to recall reading an article on Macworld a while back saying that you shouldn't just go through the finder to copy the files from one disk to another. What is the proper way to move the files from one machine to another - there are roughly 200GB worth of files.
Both units are running iMovie '11

AppleMan1958... unlike many posts I find on these forums I really appreciate that you answer the questions and do so quite authoritatively.
In keeping with the theme of this particular discussion, I have a question for you (or anyone else who can answer it).
I moved several iMovie 11 project files along with the associated events to a Mac OS Extended (Journaled) external hard drive. I did this within the iMovie Project Library window on a Mac Mini running OSX 10.6.6
After properly ejecting the drive I connected it to a Mac Pro running 10.6.5. I open iMovie on the new machine (iMovie 09) and the drive shows up in the Project Library window but the projects do not show up under it. (The projects are there because I see them in the Finder.) What I want to do is move the projects to the new machine.
I did this before so I know it works. My question is: why would the projects I want to move now not show up in the Project Library window?

  • Importing iMovie Events/Projects to FCP X?

Hi I am a complete newbie to the MAC forums. Apologies in advance for the long winded post!
    Past:
I have been a Windows / Video Studio user for many years. (Win 7, Q6600 cpu, 8gb RAM)
I principally make DVD's of slideshows, interspersed with video and with a music background for myself, businesses and friends.
I'm not a "Pro" by any stretch of the imagination but I've been successfully making reasonable quality output.
    Now
I've moved to the Mac and as my profile shows I've bought a reasonable machine - iMac 27", 16gb RAM, i7 3.4gHz cpu, AMD Radeon HD 6970M (2GB) and 1TB main drive and 3TB external drives.
I have iMovie '11 and (after reading extensive reviews) just purchased FCP X to see if I can -
Utilize the 64bit the iMac is capable of; and
give myself more flexibility for creativity (VS X3 had heaps of themes, transitions, titling etc)
    Questions
I expected FCP X to import the iMovie Events and Projects hassle free (most bad reviews referred to comparisons with FCP 7 etc.) However when I import the projects -
The iMovie MAPS feature is not supported (this is a real hassle as this was a recent welcome introduction from iMovie '09 on). Apple support suggested I export the whole project to a QT movie then import into FCP X but as I told them I bought FCP X to speed up the process, not to process a 32bit app then import to a 64bit app to do my final output. (Since then my research suggests there is a workaround to the MAPS problem if I just create the Maps in iMove and export to QT and import to FCP X - Why would Apple not just continue this feature in FCP X?
All of my photos appear full screen in iMovie, however when I import to FCP X  some of the photos are significantly smaller i.e. appear in a black frame. Is this a media problem or is FCP X not capable of importing the project in it's iMovie form?
All text frames (as intros to particular groups of photos) lose their formatting and the text is cropped and unreadable.
All this from a product that is purported to "import iMovie Events and Projects". The imported mess I have suggests I'm better off starting from scratch but this means the "import iMovie events" is useless?
Lastly, the plethora of options for output leaves me baffled to say the least. It is not helped because i am not a Pro but even iMovie is difficult to easily produce a high quality DVD for playback on a big screen TV. I try various options, SHARE>Media Browser>LARGE, or 1080p (produces 108 error in iMovie) Then import into iDVD to produce DVD menu and output to Image file prior to burning on SL or DL media. What is the best workflow to produce the best DVD output on a HD TV?
Thanks in advance for any help as time to complete some projects is against me.
    George

    Thanks Tom.
Do I understand correctly that to produce 90 minutes of high quality I need a Blu-ray burner? I follow that DL discs can only produce HD up to 40 minutes and to go beyond that I need a Blu-ray burner and disc.
On advice from Apple Support, I provided feedback for a feature request when I first struck the problem. I'll research the forums more to seek out answers to my questions. I'll have to find the "spatial conform" section. In the meantime I'll finish these projects as best I can in iMovie and then start my learning curve with FCP X as I am probably biting off more than I can chew at the moment.
Patrick and Tom, I appreciate you taking the time to share your wealth of knowledge.
    With thanks,
    George (in Tasmania Australia)

  • How to get iMovie '11 to recognize events and projects on external hard-drive?

Hello, my old iMac recently crashed and i bought a new one.  I have restored all of my iMovie files from an online backup service to an external hard-drive.  Now, I would like to add all of these events and projects into my iMovie library on my new computer.
So far, I have tried File->Import->Import Movies and then browsed to the Movies folder on my external hard-drive where all of my iMovie events and projects and videos are stored.  However, iMovie will not recognize that this folder contains any iMovie files.  Only if I browse down to each individual event folder will it then recognize and begin importing the file.  Is there anyway to get iMovie to recognize all the folder, files and events as it was on my old computer and not have to re-import everything event by event?  Thanks for any help you can provide!

    Hi
You must do this the right way.
    • EXTERNAL Hard disk - MUST - be Mac OS Extended formatted
Nothing else will do - for VIDEO !
    • The Moving of Event's and Project's - Must be done within the iMovie Application
Folders named iMovie Event's and iMovie Project's - can not be moved via Desktop/Finder - as links back to iMovie will break and can not be mended.
    My general note on this:
    Moving Event's and Project's
Connection - Either connect one Mac in Target mode to the other via FireWire. Or use an external hard disk !
(Target-Mode - Start one Mac e.g. laptop - BUT keep T-key down during full up-start - Now a FW-symbol is jumping around the screen and it will work as an external hard disk when connected to the other Mac)
    A. The External Hard Disk - MUST BE - Mac OS Extended (hfs) formatted to work for Video. UNIX/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange works for most other things but not for Video whatever program is used (iMovie or FinalCut)
    B. Should be a FireWire one as USB/USB2 performs badly to me and especially when filling up
    C. Do never Move or Alter any folder named
    • iMovie Event's - or -
    • iMovie Project's
on DeskTop/Finder - as this will result in iMovie losing connections to them and repair can be anything from hard to impossibly.
    D. Moving and Copying must be done within iMovie application and Events to Events - and - Project's to Project's.
    E. Moving Project's to Event's - Do not work for me - I have to export project as a QuickTime movie then Import this into Events.
Event's window can show two faces
    Like this
    or like this
from one hard disk Event - You can move it to the other hard disk
You can not (at least not me) move Event to Project or other way around only
Event to Event and Project to Project
    Yours Bengt W
