IMovie exporting questions, please help!

Hi,
I'm trying to transfer a home movie from a video camera and make it a quicktime file.
1st of all: Do I have to go through iMovie? Or can it just import as a quicktime movie?
2nd of all: in iMovie, is the only way to import it to import it as it plays? For long movies, this takes a while- is there a faster way?
3rd of all: Once I have the iMovie project, and I want to make it a quicktime file, i'm faced with this dilemma. I find "CD-ROM quality" slightly unacceptable, and "Full Quality" takes up about 1 GB per hour of movie . I see that there is an "Expert Settings" option; how can i use this option to find a middle ground?
Thanks so much!

welcome to the "wonderful world of video compression" .... ;-)))
I'm not familiar with QTpro7, it has a "record" option, but I'm not sure, wether it recognizes firewire-input...
I would choose iM anyhow, because, it is very convient in usage: I can remote control the camera, I can edit "quick'n dirty"...
the camera can play-out in realtime only - so, input-speed ist set here, not by iM... if this answers your second question; digital files get imported much faster, your harddrives speed set the limits...
the expert option get visible, when you choose 'em and hit the button, you get confronted with this dialog:
in the drop-down, you can choose many codecs/compressor, each offers different "options"... you can set codec, bitrates, resolutions, frame rates, plus same for audio.....
happy landing

QuickTime Player Pro and iDVD can import directly from a DV camcorder.

No. The computer can't get the video any faster than it is sent.

  • Urgent iMovie 6 Question--PLEASE HELP!!!

Hey everyone in the Support Community,
I was recently editing a school project on iMovie 6 (on a Mac OS X Tiger 10.4.11) when the screen just froze. Nothing on the entire screen would respond. So I foolishly pulled the plug on the computer, and when I turned it back on, I was unable to open the movie file. I would double click on the icon, it would load about a third of the way, and then iMovie would quit. Because it always stopped loading and quit at the same point, I figure I corrupted a file by pulling the plug. So, basically, I screwed up an iMovie file and now can't open it.
(This is where it would always lock up)
    (And here's what happened)
I am really clueless about what to do. I tried searching web forums, spent a half-hour just trying to brute force it, and even called the Apple Support Hotline (they apparently don't offer assistance for computers/apps as old as mine ) If I haven't been clear enough about the problem, I'd be happy to give any additional information.
I would super-appreciate any help. This project needs to be completed by this coming Tuesday (it's currently Friday) and I have a couple other guys relying on me to finish up the editing. PLEASE HELP ME!!! I WOULD BE FOREVER GRATEFUL!!!
    -Dannie

Unless you saved the project it will have become corrupted by that sudden shut-down.
You may need to re-create the project.
    But first try this:
Close iMovie. Go to to Home/Library/Preferences and delete the file com.apple.iMovie.plist
Restart iMovie and reset all your preferences, then try opening that project again.

  • IMovie Export Problems - PLEASE HELP !!

I have assembled a 3 hour movie in iMovie. I have tried to export approx. 20 times with no success. I have duplicated and renamed the project - deleting the original, this still does not work. I attempted to use Screenflow to record the movie playing in full screen playback - the playback crashes approx 20 mins in. I have tried to play the project within iMovie and record the preview screen (on largest size available) and it crashes approx 30 mins in. I am in despair as I have worked on the content of the movie for approx 2 years.
    Tech Info
I have upgraded to Mountain Lion during the creation of the movie.
I have updated iMovie when updates are available.
I have 12GB RAM on board.
Hard Drive (1TB) is has approx 280GB free.
    iMac - Oct 2011 - 27"
Really appreciate it if someone could help. Obviously I will not bin the project but am definitely looking for an easier fix than recreating the entire movie as I do not know if this is possible, both technically and mentally with the time that was put in already.
    Thanks in advance

If you have Time Machine running, turn it off whenever you are exporting a project (and remember to turn it back on after the export is complete).
Additionally, try splitting the project into two parts (or maybe three or more). Keep the duplicate you created earlier from the original so that you have at least one full copy of your project intact. Now create two (or more) duplicates and rename them appropriately (such as My Project Part 1, My Project Part 2 and so forth).
Delete the second half from the first duplicate (My Project Part 1). Delete the first half from the second duplicate (My Project Part 2). If you created three or more duplicates, then break them up into the relevant segments by deleting appropriate sections.
Now try to export one project at a time. Hopefully, iMovie will be able to handle the shorter projects. If one of the projects fails to export, there may be a corruption in that project file. Splitting that project further may help to isolate the problem.
You may, of course, end up with several exported project files (movies), but at least you will have something for your efforts. If your intention is to burn a DVD, you can include them as separate movies on the DVD, but bear in mind that for a single layer DVD the total running time is limited to 2 hours when using iDVD (including menus). If publishing to the web, you could upload them as separate "episodes" or the like.
TIP: When splitting up the project into shorter sections, you could add an appropriate title to the end and/or beginning of each section before exporting (such as, "End of Part One" and "Part Two" etc.) to avoid an abrupt end or start for each section.

  • Exporting Question, PLEASE HELP!

    I'm using EXPRESS.
A few film festivals are requiring a DVD SCREENER - which I'm exporting using Quicktime Conversion, and then burning in iDVD.
    HOWEVER
They're also requiring a "DATA DISC". Essentially, I'm going to put the data burned version on a DVD as well, but the movie needs to be a file in which they can open/save on their computer (.mov). How can I do this? Whenever I try to export as a QUICKTIME MOVIE, I lose about 50% of my image quality.
-"Two copies of your film must be submitted: a DVD format (which can be played in a DVD player) and an electronic (.mov, .wmv, or .avi) copy of your film burned onto a data disc"

For the DVD, do NOT use QuickTime Conversion. Go to File->Export->QuickTime Movie, then import the resulting file into your DVD authoring application.
For the other version, export Using QuickTime Conversion and choose h.264 as the compressor.

    Hi AlphaCentori,
If you are having issues accessing the Apple ID that was used to originally purchase those apps, you may find the following article helpful:

I want to change my apple id password but I forgot the security questions please help me some using my icloud I'd and if confirmation is must so please phone number is mine please send a code please help me my apple

    Welcome to the Apple community.
If you are unable to remember your password, security questions, don’t have access to your rescue address or are unable to reset your password for whatever reason, your only option is to contact AppleCare, upon speaking to an operator you should explain that your problem is related to your Apple ID, this way you will not be charged for assistance, even if you don’t have an AppleCare plan.
The operator will take you through some steps you may have already tried, however they need to be sure they have exhausted all usual approaches before trying to reset your account, so you should try to be helpful and show patience with the procedure.
The operator will need to verify they are speaking to the account holder and may ask you some questions that only the account holder could know, and you will need to answer them if the process is to proceed.
Once the operator has verified your identity they will send a message through to your device which contains an alpha numeric code, which you will need to read back to them.
Once this has been completed they will send an email to your iCloud email address after a period of 24 hours, so you should check that mail is enabled in your devices iCloud settings.
Upon receipt of the email, use the reset link provided to reset your password, after which you should be able to make the adjustments to iCloud that you wish to do.

If your account is disabled you might be able to re-enable it via this page : http://appleid.apple.com, then 'reset your password'
You might then need to log out of your account on your iPhone and iPad by tapping on your id in Settings > iTunes & App Storeand then log back in so as to 'refresh' the account on it.
For your security questions, if you have a rescue email address (which is not the same thing as an alternate email address) on your account then the steps half-way down this page will give you a reset link on your account : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5312
If you don't have a rescue email address then you will need to contact Support in your country to get the questions reset.
Contacting Apple about account security : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5699 (you can also try this link if you can't get your account enabled via the above)
When they've been reset (and if you don't already have a rescue email address) you can then use the steps half-way down the HT5312 link above to add a rescue email address for potential future use

  • HT201363 Hello, I have my pass word, I have my Apple ID, but itunes think I am buying a song for the first time and is asking me 2 security questions, please help, what should i do?

I cannot remember the answeres to my security questions, please help.

You need to ask Apple to reset your security questions; this can be done by phoning AppleCare and asking for the Account Security team, or clicking here and picking a method, or if your country isn't listed in either article, filling out and submitting this form.
They wouldn't be security questions if they could be bypassed without Apple verifying your identity.
