IMovie fails to open in Leopard
The latest version of iMovie quits before opening. After recommended Archive & Install, the issue is not resolved. Is anyone else experiencing this problem and does anyone have another suggestion?
Same situation...Leopard, installed iLife '08, on opening for the first time the program quickly fails to open.
Even after update is applied, the app bounces for a long time but nothing comes up...the program is listed in the force/quit window as if it's active and running. But it's not.
Any clues? Hints?

IMovie won't open after downgrading from Lion to Snow Leopard
Okay iMovie 08' and 11' both worked absoloutly fine on my MacBook Pro (17" Core 2 Duo 2009 model) when I had Snow Leopard installed.
I then upgraded to Lion and iMovie 11' still worked fine but Lion had a lot of bugs so I decided to wipe and install Snow Leopard again. I then used the Migration Assistant to move my Apps from a Time Machine backup to my Mac. Everything worked okay except Java was broken. Everytime I launched a Java application it would say Java 1.5 not found. I managed to fix this with a lot of Googling.
But now I've come across another issue. I noticed that iWeb, iPhoto and iMovie will not open. The icons bounce in the dock and then they finish bouncing and it appears to have loaded, the top menubar says the application name and I can click on File, Edit from the top menu and all the normal options are presented to me. But the main interface of these programs simply does not open. I managed to fix iPhoto by reading online about removing a folder called ProKit.Framework in my Library and that worked for iPhoto perfectly it now comes up and loads like normal. But iWeb and iMovie still do not load. I don't really care about iWeb but I do care about iMovie not working as I use that all the time.
Does anyone have any ideas on how I can fix this?
So far what I've tried:
1. Remove all traces of anything iLife releated on my Hard Disk including pkg receipts, cache files, .pref files and so on
2. Tried just reinstalling the entire iLife suite several times
3. Tried installing Quicktime 7 from the Snow Leopard Optional Installs DVD
4. Tried changing colour profiles on my Display (I read this worked for someone else, did nothing for me)
5. Made a new user account on my Mac and tried to run iMovie from that account, same result it 'runs' but the interface doesn't show up.
Thanks for any help you can provideI just thought I'd reply to say that I just fixed this by deleting the following folder and afterwards running software update.
iLifeMediaBrowser in /Library/Application Support
It would appear that if you erase this folder and then reinstall iLife it does something that brings this folder back or recreates it. But if you run Software update after erasing it, it downloads this folder from Apple (about 2.5MB) and that fixes the problem completely.
Hope this helps someone else! -

Expected in: /Library/Application Support/iWork '09/Frameworks/SFArchiving.framework/Versions/A/SFArchivingI'm having this issue as well only with a little different twist I guess. I'm transferring the iWorks applications from my Macbook Pro 3,1 with Lion to a new MBP 10,1 running Mountain Lion. I transferred the apps over using DropCopy since the older MBP doesn't have AirPlay. Applications show up but crash upon opening. This is the first install so there are no previous plist, versions or such to delete. All three crashed upon opening every time until I just had to have Keynote and purchased again - although Apple agreed to refund that purchase since my previous version quit working. Any ideas since I don't have any previous plist/versions to delete? Thanks in adavnce for any help you can offer.

Imovie will not open after installing leopard
Leopard was installed and then ilife 08. Imovie would not open- what do I need to do?
welcome cw50 to the boards..
reading the iM08 and the Leopard boards here at apple-discussions, and other ext. boards, you'll notice many topics like yours..
there's actual no 'official' or unofficial workaround to fix that ..
just to add to database:
did you made a clean-install of 10.5. on your System?
or, as most of us would do, just 'upgrade' your OS, without reinstalling all software...?
and, please, don't hesitate to give Apple directly feedback:

hello,
when I open i movie....after a while i get a message that imovie failed abruptly ! how i can solve thisMake sure anti-virus and other security software is disabled.
Error 20, 21, 23, 26, 28, 29, 34, 36, 37, 40
These errors typically occur when security software interferes with the restore and update process. Use the steps to troubleshoot security software issues to resolve this issue. In rare cases, these errors may be a hardware issue. If the errors persist on another computer, the device may need service.
Also, check your hosts file to verify that it's not blocking iTunes from communicating with the update server. See the steps under the heading "Blocked by configuration (Mac OS X / Windows) > Rebuild network information > Mac OS X > The hosts file may also be blocking the iTunes Store." If you have software used to perform unauthorized modifications to the iOS device, uninstall this software prior to editing the hosts file to prevent that software from automatically modifying the hosts file again on restart.

My iMovie isn't opening -- it worked fine earlier today and now nothing
I worked on a couple movies today, deleted a few projects and a couple hours later my iMovie has just stopped coming up. I don't know what to do. I read somewhere to put iMovie in the trash but I have several things on there that I don't want trashed so that isn't an option for me. I'm so frustrated. I have the snow leopard (I think) - the one before the new system that came out this year. I haven't updated cause when I bought my new video camera th esales woman said that the new system doesn't work with this camera --- so now I have a new camera I can't even use cause the iMovie won't open. It comes up on the top - just that informational stuff but not the actual iMovie -- I scrolled down for check for updates and it popped up for a millisecond. Don't know what to do - tried turning the computer off but still nothing.
Try this:
Reboot your Mac, while holding down the Shift key (this is called Safe Boot Mode). When you see the timer start spinning, and eventually see the text Safe Boot Mode, let go of the Shift key.
When you see the Desktop launch iMovie and see if it can load the program.
If it fails, try deleting the Preferences file for iMovie.
Go to Mac HD > Users > (your home folder) > Library > Preferences > look for com.apple.iMovieApp.plist
If you have an earlier version of iMovie installed it might be named something like com.apple.iMovie8.plist.
Move that file to the desktop by dragging it out of the folder. Or even drag it to the trash. Try launching iMovie again. -
imovie won't open on mac
what do I do .... I have clicked force quit as it is unresponsive?
I have shut down computer. Unplugged power for 30 seconds and opened back up still the same problem. Help please!!!So you don't have the iLife 09 disk either? (Can't remember if that was a separate disk or not).
Hmmm, it'd be better if you had the iLife disk.....
So, first you need to buy Snow Leopard (call Apple, it's the best price there); once you install it, update it to 10.6.8. That will give you the Mac App Store - you need that to buy Mountain Lion (download only, no disks). You will also want to up your RAM memory toa s much as you can - Mountain Lion is somewhat of a memory hog.
If you don't have your iLife disks, then a bootable clone on an external drive is an absolute must have just in case. You should do the first one before you install Snow Leopard just in case. Then, once you're up to 10.6.8 and all your applications are updated 9ncluding iLife, make a new bootable clone before you download/install Mountain Lion. Keep that clone safe just in case you need to revert or something goes wrong (especially if you don't have disks).
Once Mountain Lion is downloaded, first dismiss the installer and find it in your Applications folder. Make a copy of it and put it in a safe place (so you don't need to download it again). Then begin installing; when finished, run Software Update. Hopefully, your iMovie will be updated to the latest version. At that point, I'd make another clone and keep that one updated.
Having said all that, I'm not sure about iMovie not responding now - since you don't have disks, you can't reinstall it, so I don't know if upgrading will work. Normally one should take care of any problems before upgrading, but unless you want to buy a retail iLife 09 or 11 (which is still available online here and there), there isn't much you can do about installing. -
Imovie won't open (quits unexpectedly)
I just upgraded operating systems from panther to leopard, bought imovie08 and installed it, but imovie will not open up. It says "the application iMovie quit unexpectedly" everytime and I just bought it and installed and cleaned out my harddrive and added 1 gig of RAM. What's the deal? Can anyone help?
Everything works fine with Imovie and garage band until the movie is exported to IMovie the computer crash and "everything" must be re installed. (OS included)
The problems is with IMovie, I changed the computer thinking that it was a hardware problem. I'm using a 6 days old MacBook Pro (the second one) and still the same problem...........
I have 8 more days to play with him, if I can get it to work I might go back to PC....... -
IMovie won't open and Library Folder is missing in Finder
A few days ago, I downloaded the recent iMovie program. I even used it to make a video. Today I wanted to make another one but iMovie won't open at all. The wheel just spins and spins and nothing opens. So, I went into Finder and noticed my Library folder was missing. How did that happen? Is that why iMovie won't open?
I searched the Discussion Forums and saw how to find the Library folder in Lion. (Press Option and hit the Go button in the menu bar.) But, I have Maverick. I tried this anyway but I have no idea what/where the Go button is.
How do I find, or replace if necessary, my Library folder and get iMovie to open? I have a mid-2007 iMac that's been upgraded from Snow Leopard, so I don't want to put the Install Disk in and lose everything. Help? Thanks. Sorry for the confusion with the Library Folder. It's just been a long day all around.
Memory 4 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM
I know it's older but it's never caused me a day's trouble since I've owned it. I hate to replace it until the next upgrade.
ETA: I just opened the Activity Monitor in Utilities and it says, out of 4GB of Memory, that 3.88GB are Used. I don't understand this because I have very, very few things loaded onto my iMac at all. I've always had tons of memory left. I don't have any music on my PC at all. No movies, either. My dock only has Finder, Launchpad, Dashboard, Safari, Firefox, TextEdit and System Preferences.
Here's a report from my Activity Monitor. Any suggestions? I have no idea what some of these things are, like: CalendarAgent (I don't use calendar at all),

Hi Ever Since I Installed Leopard My Version Of iMovie '08 Wont Open Properly In The Dock Is Says It Is Open And On The Bar At The Top It Says iMovie '08 But No Window Opens And I Cant Make A New Project Or Anything. I Have Also Reinstalled It As Well And Still the Same Problem.
Does Any One Have Any Ideas?
ThanksActually after some digging around in the Apple Message Boards I found the problem. I went to system preferences, selected, displays, then chose "color" and pick any new profile. I chose the "srgb...." profile, then exited system prefs. When I opened iMovie... tada! it worked. Strange fix, but OK.
-
lightroom 5 on a Mac os 10.8.5 will not start. It fails to open. And it worked fine the other day.
Reh... Doesn't work on my 2012 Mac mini. A function key set in Sys Prefs worked in Leopard and Lion on my MB but I cannot get any key to work using SysPref Dictation & Speech. It is befuddling and now I have to go to Edit-Speech to turn on and turn off speech to selected text.
I have used Macs and Apple 2es since cave man days and Apple is becoming so befuddling I am wondering if there is even an advantage to it over Windows XP. I spent a lot on this little box, it looks good (the first one had to be exchanged as it wouldn't link to my keyboard ???) but Apple intuitive does no longer seem meaningful.
If speech to text no longer is accessible by short cuts using Fkeys, why bother to have it in Syst Prefs?
Apple is losing its way. The pleasure is gone and no one at Apple seems to care. -
I have a mac book pro. Yesterday the mail app failed to open. I have tried to open it from the dock and the application folder but nothing happens. Does anyone have any suggestions to get it to work?
You don't need iDVD unless you are going to make DVDs. If you are just trying to share files, iDVD won't help you at all.
What you want to do is in iMovie, choose File/Share/File, and export that way. It creates an .mp4 file that should be readable on Macs or Windows.
You could also File/Share/YouTube if you don't mind posting them to YouTube, because of course YouTube videos are watchable by any Mac or Windows computer made in the last 10 years. -
For 'Reason' if you get the message "Failed to Open MIDI Support Library"
I tried to open Reason 3.0.5 with an MBox 2 on my new MacBook Pro (Leopard) and I got this message: 'Failed to Open MIDI Support Library.' When I went to my 'Audio-MIDI' setup on my Mac, nothing loaded properly...
I found the solution to this problem after looking around online, and figured other people might be having the same problem, so here it is...
First, create a new folder on your computer desktop and call it "Old MIDI Drivers" (or something similar), then go to Macintosh HD>library>audio>midi drivers, and move all the drivers (that you don't plan on using) from that folder into your "Old MIDI Driver" folder on your desktop. For example, I moved all the drivers out except for my MBox 2 driver.
After you do this, you may have to restart your comp. (I didn't) and Reason should run.
Hope this helps...(No biggie, but if you mark your own post as 'Answered' then people searching for answered posts will be able to find it more easily…)

Some dmg images fail to open on 10.6, work on 10.5
In the process of updating Office 2008 without using MS Auto Update, I downloaded the 12.2.0 update from the MS website as a dmg. The image opens with no problems on machines running 10.5.8. It fails to open on machines running 10.6.3 or 4. I've tested three machines with each version of OS X and the results are consistent. The error given on Snow Leopard is
"The following disk images couldn't be opened
Office2008-1220UpdateEN.dmg Image data corrupted"
The image is being downloaded to each machine perfectly - I've checked the SHA1 hash for the file and it's the same on all machines.
Using hdiutil to open the image shows that Snow Leopard is having a problem with the checksum of the HFS part of the image:
Checksumming Driver Descriptor Map (DDM : 0)…
Driver Descriptor Map (DDM : 0): verified CRC32 $FB1834EF
Checksumming Apple (Applepartitionmap : 1)…
Apple (Applepartitionmap : 1): verified CRC32 $3613B27D
Checksumming disk image (Apple_HFS : 2)…
disk image (Apple_HFS : 2): checksum failed with error 1000.
Verification completed…
Error 1000 (image data corrupted).
calculated CRC32 $951A6B86, expected CRC32 $49C7A9E5
To test this yourself, have a look at the MS Office page:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=300133bb-b5f7-4946-bb7b -b0c6c6d6e28c
Any ideas, anyone?JaimieV wrote:
That just means it's the same on all your machines - doesn't mean it's right.
True, although if the image is corrupt it's odd that it works on 10.5 and not 10.6.
Here, with the file I've had for ages that mounts happily on SL,
SHA1(Office2008-1220UpdateEN.dmg)= 4bab1dd039583f762df1576a97b4eba8cd5b63b7
Does that match yours?
No.
SHA1(Office2008-1220UpdateEN.dmg)= 21dea53cb07e85c4c7adaecad7c2153a52b2fdd6
Either MS have changed something in that update or my copy is corrupt. Once I get out from behind this firewall I'll try again and see what happens on a machine at home. -
OS X fails to open quarantined files
Hi,
Since doing a fresh install of snow leopard on release date I have had several problems with the OS X I have googled but can't seem to find any reference to this issue;
When I first boot into OS X everything works fine and it stays that way for hours or days, then all of a sudden files with the "com.apple.quarantine" attribute fail to launch; if I try to run an app with the flag then it hangs and if I try to open a PDF for example, then preview will fail to open it and hang.
If I kill the process, remove the com.apple.quarantine attribute with xattr then the file works fine, however this is clearly inconvienient. The only way I can fix the issue is to reboot my system when it occurs.http://images.apple.com/server/macosx/docs/LeopardSecurity_Config20080530.pdf
"Applications that download files from the Internet or receive files from external sources
(such as mail attachments) can use the Quarantine feature to provide a first line of
defense against malicious software such as Trojan horses. When an application receives
an unknown file, it adds metadata (quarantine attributes) to the file using new
functions found in Launch Services.
Files downloaded using Safari, Mail, and iChat are tagged with metadata indicating that
they are downloaded files and referring to the URL, date, and time of the download.
This metadata is propagated from archive files that are downloaded (such as ZIP or
