Imovie File Transfer

Is there a way to transfer Imovie files from one Mac to another so that I can continue to edit on the second? I work for a company that uses mostly PC's that are connected by a common network. My IT partners are telling me that it is not as simple as exporting the Imovie file to network drives and opening on the second Mac and that an external hard drive is also not an option. It seems to me that this should be possible so I thought I would ask here.

The documented way to do this would be to use a locally attached external drive that is formatted as Mac OS Externded (journaled).
All moves should be done from within iMovie.
Click VIEW/EVENTS BY DISK so you can see your external drives within iMovie.
First move your Project to the external drive by dragging the small icon for the Project to the small icon for the external drive in the Project Library List. See iMovie Help here.
http://help.apple.com/imovie/#move7d66613
Then select the Project on the external drive and click FILE/CONSOLIDATE MEDIA...  This will let you copy Events, Music, and Photos to the external drive.
http://help.apple.com/imovie/#mov3ac6c7c9
Finally, plug the external drive into the other Mac and you can edit. If you prefer, you can reverse the process and drag the project to the internal drive of the new Mac. Then you can Consolidate Media to the internal drive as well if you want.
You may be able to simulate some of this with a network drive, but it is risky because you cannot do it from within iMovie, so you risk breaking the links to your project.

  • How do I transfer my Imovie files to my new Mac?

Last night I received my brand new Imac and transferred the contents from my 2008 Imac using Time Machine BU. Everything seemed in order until I opened Imovie on the new Imac and couldn't see any of my Imovie events.
I then hooked the two computers together using an ethernet cable and used the migration feature to do the same thing.
Now it appears all my data has transferred twice( the 1 TB hard drive is almost full and the Imovie files are still not on the new Mac.
    Can anyone advise me?

Click here and follow the instructions to move the files; to connect the computers together, hook them up with a FireWire cable and start up one with the T key held down.

  • I would like to "Transfer" all the iMovie files to my Time Capsule.

My MacBook Pro has run out of space. Now I want to "Move" all of my iMovie files to my newly purchased Time Capsule. (Guy in store said wouldn't be a problem)
I already have proceeded with the standaard Time mashine backedup (Which took ages even through cable)

So I have iMovie 09; Mac OS X 10.6.8; and a new 2T Time Capsule

Guy in store was wrong, or there was a misunderstanding
(and why is Time Capsule showing up as "Data" with yellow triangle in iMovie under Hard Disks)
Because iMovie won't work with files on a network -- it would be excruciatingly slow.
You need an external HD; or a larger internal HD; or to move some other stuff elsewhere.
Besides, if you have your backups on your Time Capsule, you don't want to put other stuff there anyway.  First, how will you back up that other stuff?  Second, mixing TM backups and other stuff on the TC will cause conflicts.  See #Q3 in Using Time Machine with a Time Capsule for an explanation and some possible workarounds.

  • Due to storage shortage I had to transfer my imovies files to an internal HD.

After doing this imovie won't show up any of my projects or any movies.  All files are still on the computer so it seems to be a connection problem?  How do I connect all the files up again?
To move the files I just opened up 2 finders and dragged the imovie folders into the internal memory.

Hi thanks for your quick reply!    I have dragged across all of imovies files that I can find.  This included the events library and the project library.  Or am I mis-understand what you are saying here?
I'm a mac dummy as not had one for long and it's been a big adjustment!

  • Moving an imovie file from one mac to another

My mac says it's too big to burn the file onto a disk and I don't have a DVD burner. So I've been trying to move the file to my friends mac. I've tried to export the movie and made it a DVD project and burned it as just a normal data file but when i try to open it onto my friends computer there are missing components. Now I've given up i just want the imovie to be on my friends computer.

    Welcome to the forums.
The iDVD projects don't transfer because they are not self-contained -- they are drawing information from the iMovie projects. If you Shared/Exported from iMovie to Full-Quality Quicktime, and the resulting file was bigger than 4.5ish gigs, then some options (rather than a data DVD) are:
    - connect your two Macs with Firewire or Ethernet and transfer the Quicktime file (I have a small Ethernet network that was very easy to set up).
    - use an external hard drive to transport the Quicktime file.
    - use Quicktime Pro (or similar) to break up the large Quicktime file into pieces that will fit on a DVD (I think Roxio's Toast 8 automatically splits files across multiple media).
The Quicktime file will be smaller (perhaps dramatically smaller) than the iMovie files, and it will be self-contained. Perhaps do a search in the forum and see if there are some other ideas for transferring video files/iMovie projects between computers.

  • Transferring IMovie files to DVD

Can anybody tell me how I might transfer an IMovie file on to a disk which is playable in a normal domestic DVD player (ie the sort that is connected to a TV via a scart lead). What kind of disk do I need and do I need a special software programme. Many thanks

    Hi
    There are more to this.
iMovie'08 or 09 - are not the tool to use if You want as high quality DVD can do.
iMovie up to HD6 and FinalCut Express or Pro - are tools of choise
This is due to the way iM'08&09 handles interlaced video - by discarding every second line
Quality will be as on VHS tapes and close to LP-recording on these.
Else what I use to keep in mind
    • DVD brand - I use only Verbatim
    • Type of DVD - To me DVD-R works best - NO NO to +/-RW DVDs
    • Free space on start-up hard disk - never under 25Gb in my set-up due to that
iDVD and Mac OS needs space for their temp files - Can't store them on other HDs
    • Burn speed - I set it down to x4 or x1
    • Encoding - I only use Pro Quality encoding
    • AND - when started a DVD project - NEVER GO BACK to movie editor to alter
iDVD will notice and ask You to Up-date or Cancel but neither works - An iDVD BUG
Medicine: Start a NEW iDVD project and structure this again.

  • IMovie file name changes

I seem to be having trouble with my hard drive and am trying to back up my movie onto an external Hard Drive. Everytime I try to back up the IMovie file I get an error message saying a specific file has data missing(I think because of hard drive issues). I have been able to find the corrupt file and change it and then try transfering the movie again. Each time it gets further along in the transfer until it finds the next corrupt file that needs to be changed...
The problem is I cannot find the newest file it is saying has data missing. It is called IMG_62.jpg. None of my files match that description on my computer or external hard drive. Does IMovie can the names of files once they are in the project? Does anyone have any advice how to find this file? My project has about 500 pictures and video, and I don't know what is corrupted. The movie plays in IMovie but it won't let me transfer it to the external or export it to a .dv file.
    Thanks for any help,
    Brent

First a basic question: Is the external drive formatted as Mac OS Extended?
iMovie can't properly save to other formats and you may have trouble copying files via the Finder, too, if the drive is not Mac OS Extended.
iMovie HD now stores its project folder as a "package". You can see the old iMovie 1-4-style folder structure by control-clicking (or right-clicking) the project package. Maybe the offending file is hiding there. ...but you really should not change the filenames -- the project should copy without such tweaks!!

  • Trouble to read OS 9 iMovie files with OSX 10.4.6 from ext. HD FAT32

First a big "Hello" to all of you, since I am new in this comunity as registered user.
With my (good old dead old) iMac DV400 I saved multiple iMovie projects on an external 250gb firewire harddisk which is FAT32 formated. With OS 9 there was never ever any trouble. Except that the FAT32 caused a very low but sufficient data transfer rate. Beside this the drive behaves and appeared like Mac drive - in OS 9.
Now I have an Intel-iMac (as I said the other is dead) which runs under OSX 10.4. When I access now the ext. HD I see all the junk files as Finder.dat or resource.xxx folder ect. But some files have lost their application. In particular all iMovie related files I cannot open with iMovie neither klicking the icons nor via the iMovie "open..." dialog. All this files have strange icon looking like the old DOS c:/ -prompt. In addition I realized that my very few mp3 files without the ".mp3" extension were also not recognized as iTunes files. I had to rename them and added a ".mp3". (I had never such issues with OS 9x).
Since there a plenty of iMove files (all project files, all clips) and plenty work done (movie taking, movie editing) I really like to recover all this files.
Any ideas out there? Any older thread available - here or elsewhere in the net?
    Thanks, Joe

  • Imovie file to imovie hd

im trying to get a project from imovie and transfer it onto imoviehd, but every time i try it just says it is outdated and doesn't work, how can i change this?

    A couple of questions:
    1. What EXACTLY does iMovie say when you try to open
    the project?
    2. What version of iMovie are you currently using?
(You've posted in the iMovie 5 forum, but iMovie 6
should have shipped with your Mac.)
    3. What version of iMovie created the project? To
check, open the application TextEdit. Then drop the
project file icon onto the TextEdit icon in the Dock.
The first few lines of the project file show the
version of iMovie that created the project.
    4. What happens when you double-click on the QT.mov
to open it? Is there an error message? What does it
say? Or is the movie simply "empty".
    5. How did you import the old project to your new
Mac? Did you use Migration Assistant to move stuff
from the old Mac to the new one?

  • "the finder cannot complete the operation because some data in [name of iMovie file] could not be read or written (Error Code 26)

    Hi all,
I have an iMovie project in iMovie HD 6.0.3. (Mac OS 10.5.8)
It plays, but I cannot copy the file (including saving it to a flash drive). I get either a message
"the finder cannot complete the operation because some data in [name of
iMovie file] could not be read or written (Error Code 26)" or the
message "A project file is missing. The file [name of the QuickTime
movie inside the project.dv] couldn't be opened and is being skipped."
This happened suddenly, I was able to save a backup version numerous
times while working on the project.
I followed some of Karl Petersen's advise on apple discussions. I opened
the package contents, and everything seems to be there. The source file
(original QuickTime movie) is there and can be opened and played. I
replaced the current project file with the backup in the package
contents, but that did not change anything. I was able to export the
movie timeline into a new project as a single clip, but would like to be
able to copy the current project.
    Thanks for any ideas..

Make sure all drives are formatted as "Mac OS Extended". (Journalling preferred, but not necessary).

  • UCMA 4 and back to backing a file transfer request

OK, I know that file transfer isn't technically supported on UCMA 4.0, but I wanted to take another look at it and see whether there was a way to b2b a file transfer request. After all, there's no reason that it shouldn't work if the messaging is correct,
right? The scenario I have is A <-b2b-> app <-b2b->B.  I have an IM conversation going on between A and B, so now I'm trying to set it up so that A can send a file to B.
So far I've extended the platform to accept file transfer requests by creating my own call and factory classes, and then registering them using RegisterPlatformExtension.  This means that when A sends a file, the INVITE gets delivered to my application.
Now I'm taking that INVITE and creating a new b2b call.  A file transfer request looks something like this:
    TL_INFO(TF_PROTOCOL) [0]16A8.4B28::02/10/2015-19:53:05.007.001d492f (SIPStack,SIPAdminLog::ProtocolRecord::Flush:ProtocolRecord.cpp(265))[3939761282] $$begin_record

I've got my b2bed invite looking almost identical to the original invite by creating a custom MIME type on the CallEstablishOptions for the back to back call using something like this:
    Regex r = new Regex(@"^((.|\n)*)(\<request)((.|\n)*)(request\>)((.|\n)*)$");
    Match m=r.Match(args.RequestData.GetMessageBodyString());
    content=string.Format("Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable\r\n{0}{1}{2}",m.Groups[3],m.Groups[4],m.Groups[6]);
    opt.CustomMimeParts.Add(new MimePartContentDescription(new ContentType("application/ms-filetransfer+xml"),System.Text.ASCIIEncoding.UTF8.GetBytes(content)));
    opt.CustomMimeParts[0].ContentDispositionHeader = new SignalingHeader("Content-Disposition", "render; handling=optional");
So far the only differences I can see in my outbound message vs the original SDP are that the Content-Transfer-Encoding might not be seen as a header (since the SignalingHeaders property on the MimePartContentDescription is read only), and the Content-Transfer-Encoding
on the first MIME part (created by the BackToBackCall) is missing (even though I specified it on the PassThroughHeaders).  Even with all of this though, I still get a 488 on client B when I attempt the transfer (even though the invite goes through).
What I'm wondering though, is whether there's any way at all to get this working the way I'd expect, where a file gets transferred directly between A and B, without my bot having to receive it first.  The other approach I've looked at is binding my
own media provider class to customize the SDP, but if this MIME part approach isn't going to work, then I have a feeling the media provider won't work either.
Any suggestions on where to look next?
    Thanks!
    Chris

    Chris,
I am trying to do something similar to this and from what I have read and in talking to MS is that you need to extend the Call and Flow class which it looks like you have been able to do. Could I bother you to share what you have written? Maybe we can help
each other out on this. I am basically trying to create an application that will be able to capture a file transfer and save it, then send the original request on to the intended recipient.
    Thanks in advance,
