IMovie Files Wont Work in Final Cut

So the newest iMovie update is really frustrating me.  I usually capture all my video files into iMovie, then edit them in Final Cut Express.  At first I couldnt find the .mov files that iMovie creates, until I went to the iMovie Library and went under Show Package Contents.  I was able to transfer those files to FC, however when I try to play them in the viewer, all I get is a white screen.  The audio works fine, but there is no picture.  Similarly, when I tried to render the file to see if that corrected the problem, I got a message that said codec not found.  The file appears to be a normal .mov file so Im not sure what to do to get it to work in FC.

"unable to initialize video deck",
Exactly what deck (make & model); how is it connected to your Mac; what FCE Easy Setup are you using?
It says it is saved in MPEG-2
That's a problem.  FCE cannot edit MPEG2 video.  You have to convert it to QuickTime/Apple Intermediate Codec or QuickTime/Apple DV.   Where did this footage come from?   If it's an HDV camcorder, you should be able to capture in FCE.
If you already have an MPEG2 video file, you can try using MPEG Streamclip (free) to convert it to QT.  You will probably also need the Apple MPEG2 Component if you do not already have it (19.99 from Apple).  Note that if your Mac has Snow Leopard or later there are special instructions for installing the Apple MPEG2 Component - see "Snow Leopard and MPEG-2 Playback Component" on the MPEG Streamclip website.

  • AVI file shot on one of these USB HD Flipcams, wont work in Final Cut...

    Hi guys,
A client wants me to edit some footage they've provided on a USB stick, shot on one of these new flipcams, like this...http://www.overstock.com/Electronics/Rokinon-DV500HD-Fun-Flix-720p-HD-Digital-Vi deo-Camera/4238763/product.html?cid=133635
I have lots of AVI files, Quicktime can't play them but VLC plays them fine. When I try to play them in Final Cut, it recognizes the file but just plays a white screen and no audio.
I've try all sorts of converters on PC and mac but can't seem to get anywhere, any suggestions?
    Thanks,
    Alex

I think I'd download MPEG Streamclip and use it to convert the files to something you know FCP is going to recognize. DV, ProRes, etc.

  • HT3775 Does anyone know how to get .mts files and mpg files to work in final cut express?

I am trying to import footage from a cannon xa10 but it wont come up in final cut express. The only files I have managed to get off the sd card are either .mts or .mpg files and these won't import into final cut. Any suggestions?

Barney & cjnz11, are you importing AVCHD lite?
FCE doesnt play nice with AVCHD lite with the Standard plugins, imovie on the other hand does (go figure) there is a fix for this.
    1. Open the Final Cut Express.app by right clicking the icon and choose 'show content'. At Contents/Plugins you find a folder called: "AVCHD.RADPlug". compress this and keep it safe (Just incase)
    2. Now Open the iMovie.app by right clicking the icon and choose 'show content'  At Contents/RADPlugins there is a folder called "AVCHD.RADPlug". Copy that folder to where you found the folder with the same name inside the Final Cut Express.app
After that you will be able to Log & Transfer AVCHD Lite with in FCE instead of the imovie import and XML export method.

  • SWF file wont import into Final Cut

I built TV commercial in Flash and I am trying to import it into Final Cut Pro. I tried editing it in After Effects but when I render it as an avi file it ends up being 1 gig....  I called adobe support but they wont give support, even if you pay them, to use anyone using a trial version of After Effects. Not sure I want to buy it if I cant use Flash and FCP wih it. Either way, if someone can tell me where I can go to figure out how to import this flash animation into Final Cut Pro that would great! In fact, if it is that complicated, I will pay someone to do it for me. This commercial needs to be ready for the stations yesterday.
I really hate Apple for making Final Cut Pro so difficult to work cohesively with Windows software.

You can't. Apple ceased support on their Quicktime Flash componet several years ago. Converting it an Adobe program or exporting it as a image sequence or clip from the flash authoring environment are the only serious options. Still, even that is bound to rules liek not producing correct results with scripts and things that require user interaction. if that is the case and you are running out of time, play the file in a web browser and do a screen capture. Not glorious, but assuming the machine is fast enough and the SWF has been authored properly with video use in mind (size and framerate), might produce a usable movie...

  • Transitions and dragging files not working in Final Cut Express 4

Although this topic has been gathering dust in these archives for a while, my problem differs in that there's plenty of room either side of the edit point. So no need for "handles" either side.
Today I installed Final Cut Express 4 on my swanky new MacBook Pro which I am stroking as I write. Ooh, baby, brushed aluminium ...
First, in the Browser, I've set up a "bin" but I am unable to drag any of the four short clips that I've imported from my Nokia 5800 phone. Yet it has worked perfectly in iMovie (the good one, the one with the Timeline).
Why, when I click on a clip, can I not grab it in order to drag it to the bin?
Neither will it let me drag any of the transition icons into place as is done in the tutorial. But when I click on the edit, it drops a brown vertical that looks like it could be the transition icon (I want the cross dissolve at about 2 seconds). I tried several transitions but nothing seems to be showing up in the preview canvas.
How do I drag the transition icon into place?
Once success, though. I used the razor blade to get rid of a few frames, then shift and delete so the whole thing lifts out with the audio — that worked properly. But the edit is a straight cut, no dissolve.
There was a red line that told me something needed rendering, so I rendered "both". Sequence, render all, "both". But when I click on the edit I get another red horizontal render line above it. That's happened several times.
A window with browser and canvas appeared, reading Trim Edit, (left viewer side) Outgoing clip (vid name) 00:00:40:19 and 00:00:41:18, then (right canvas side) Incoming clip 00:01:10:24 and 00:00:50:15. There's also a button reading Track VI but I have no idea what that is. I've tried sliding things but I can't get timings that look like a second to the left of the edit point, and a second to the right, meaning they overlap by two seconds.
The window had three sets of controls, one under the viewer "Outgoing Clip", a second under the right hand canvas "Incoming Clip". The middle one plays the canvas screen as Previewing Edit. Again, we get to the transition and it's a basic cut.
    Help! What's going wrong?

"imported from my Nokia 5800 phone."
This material will not work with FCE. It needs to be converted to a format that is compatible with FCE. You can probably use MPEG Streamclip to do this.
    Transitions: http://www.fcpbook.com/Effects1.html
Please confirm that you have handles available on your media to create the overlap for the transition.
Rendering: Your material is not compatible with FCE.

  • AVCHD import locks up on iMovie '09, but same clip works on Final Cut Exp.

I have footage from a Sony HDR-CX7 and HDR-CX12 memory stick AVCHD camcorder. After I fill up a memory stick, I use Disk Utility to make a disk image of the data, so I can mount it and re-import later. Now that iMovie '09 has an Archive All option, I will start using that.
I have an 8GB stick of footage that locks up during import, requiring me to force quit iMovie. I was able to locate the clip it gets stuck on, and skip it, then I found another. The end result is FIVE clips that cause iMovie to lock up.
Final Cut Express, however, can import them just fine, which makes me think it's an issue with the import error handling of iMovie (assuming there is an issue with the footage on the stick image).
Anyone have any ideas? I can make one of the clips available in a disk image if someone wants to test it.

    AppleMan1958 wrote:
It is great that you have FCE to preserve the five clips.
Yes, thankfully I thought about this while at work today, and gave FCE a try when I got home. I was about ready to give up.
I recommend that every time you make a disk image and test that it will mount, you go ahead and use the camera to reformat the memory stick. This way it does not get fragmented, etc.
Always. I travel with four 4GB memory sticks, and one 8GB. I try to only use the 4s, since they will fit on a DVD-R. The 8GB is just for when I know I'm going to record something too long (long show at Disneyland, etc.)
Personally, I am sticking with the disk image method because those should work with any program (like FCE). I fear that the archival method might only work with iMovie. If you have both, you might try opening an archive in FCE and see if it works.
That's a very good point, since the previous iMovie could not import from a directory. However, it looks like you can just copy the raw files to a disk image and mount that for the old iMovie to recognize it (and probably FCE). I will have to give that a try.
I tested import on a generic/fresh GUEST account with the same results. Can someone there give this a try? Here is the disk image with one short HD video clip (it's from the Oklahoma Renaissance Festival, of "Inga" at the front gate - lovely girl):
Here is a 13MB disk image that locks up my iMovie:

  • In iMovie is there any way when you import your files to just make the file an alias like final cut does and not actually import and copy the whole file again into my mac. It's taking a lot of my space up. Thanks

I just want to see if there is any way that I can import the files into iMovie as an alias like Final Cut Pro and Express does. I hate having to copy the file again because it takes up alot of space on my Mac. Thanks.

No, but you can import your Event to an external drive from the import screen.
It is also possible to create a symbolic link to another location. The link stays in your iMovie Events or iMovie Project folder, but the actual file resides somewhere else. I don't do it this way, so I can't share any details.

  • Can I share files from other programs or just Adobe apps files. I work with Final Cut and Premiere X

Can I share files from other programs or just Adobe apps files. I work with Final Cut and Premiere X.? Need to share files up to 6GB.
I need to know if the 20 gb limit is about all that I share, or if it's just about whatis in the clouds. If I take, recover my limit?
The speed of upload e download is good?

The Creative Cloud file storage could be used for video assets but speed and performance might vary based on location. I would suggest you testing it out yourself using your Adobe ID before subscribing. Performance would not change after you joined.

  • Mpeg-2 files won't work in Final Cut Pro

Please help! I was given mpeg-2 files to edit in Final Cut Pro 6, and they don't play in FCP or Quicktime. Is there a way to convert them to a format that will work?
The dimensions are 1440x1080, MPEG-2 Video, MPEG Layer 2 codec, not sure the frame rate.
I do have the original miniDV tapes, but they won't play in my JVC deck - just a black screen. I think the footage was filmed on a Sony camera, and I think I remember hearing Sony cameras film in mpeg-2?

do I just export to Quicktime and use current settings (ProRes)?
Yes. Make it a Self-Contained file.
This will be put on DVD and we're looking for the best quality to send to film fests. I
Use one of the Best Quality, time based DVD presets in Compressor. Import the resulting files into DVD Studio Pro.
It's a short film, so I won't need to compress it.
Yes you do. A DVD uses a MPEG 2 video and ac3 audio track as its basis. Using Compressor as outlined above will produce those files.

  • Do cameras that work with Imovie also work with Final cut pro x?

    It does work!

  • Import iMOVIE with sound? Export Final Cut Project to Pro Tools?

I am considering the 30 day free trial for Final Cut Pro X. I have a new Macbook Lion laptop.
I made a short film in iMOVIE 09 on my new laptop. I am getting it professionally scored next week. Can I seamlessly transfer iMOVIE project into Final Cut Pro X so that it keeps all my audio tracks? For example, I have natural background sound on many video clips. I have also added "monster" sound effects all over the place. I have voiceover here and there as well. So I am wondering if I import iMOVIE project to Final Cut Pro X are all the sounds merged (I don't want this) or does the project appear in Final Cut Pro X just like it does in my iMOVIE (video clip with a few audio clips under it)?
Second question - The audio post company would need to export the project from Final Cut Pro X to a software program called Pro Tools. There are a whole bunch of "preferences" needed to be checked off to make sure they get project the way it should be. However, my question is does anyone know if Final Cut Pro X is compatible with Pro Tools Software?
FYI - if I don't do the above I was told I need to make 8-9 copies of DVD of movie in iMOVIE. One would be video with natural sound when I filmed and all other sound turned off. Another DVD would be just voiceover sound and all other sound turned off etc... The audio post company needs each sound isolated so they can manipulate audio levels etc. This sounds like pain in butt which is why I am attempting to see if I can do the above.
    Thanks, Todd

Thank you all for help. Spoke to engineer at audio post company. I told him it sounds like that I can export iMOVIE project to Final Cut Pro X and keep audio tracks. However, I cannot export Final Cut Pro X project to Pro Tools. Hence, no point in moving iMOVIE project to Final Cut Pro X.
The engineer told me to make Quicktime files of the 4 minute movie with each different audio track. He said as long as the track does not overlap I can have multiple sounds... for example, if my voiceover occurs from 0 sec. to 30 sec and that is only sound then I can keep in a monster sound that occurs from 1 minute to 1 minute 30 sec. etc.
I did forget to ask him one question. One filmmaker noticed that I had stereo monster sounds and mono monster sounds. I would think most people would not notice difference but the filmmaker did. Not sure if this company can fix something like that?
Thanks again for all your help. The thing that is weird about all of this is if I buy the latest and greatest Final Cut Pro X and make my next project from scratch with it I still won;t be able to export using Pro Tools... Sounds like Pro Tools only works with Final Cut.

  • What is the best dvd burning program with a nice menu like idvd that works with Final cut pro

What is the best dvd burning program with a nice menu like idvd that works with Final cut pro, I am wanting to burn mainly wedding dvds but also sports and other things we used to use idvd but then upgraded our computers and now we dont have it. idvd was the only thing i could find that worked.
    Thanks

There is no real substitute for iDVD.
Why is there no iDVD on my new Mac? How do I get it and how do I install it?
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3673
To burn a DVD with iDVD from the latest version of iMovie, you have to export the movie using the Export button and select 480p as the size. Open iDVD and start a new project, then drag that exported movie file into the iDVD menu window, avoiding any drop zones you see.

  • Will Canon Vixia HF20 work with Final Cut Pro 5?

    Hello,
Just bought a new Canon vixia HF20, and heard that it doesn't work with Final Cut Pro 5, only six. Is this true?
Also? Whats the first step in importing from this camera if it does work?

iMovie saves the footage inside its project file.
Right click the icon, choose "Show Package Contents".
Open the Contents folder -the footage is in the Media subfolder.
Can you bring it into FCP?
    Dunno. Give it a try.
If that does not work iMovie has various export options.

  • Can files be exported from Final Cut Pro X trial?

Can files be exported from Final Cut Pro X trial?

It doesn't seem to work on mine, when I go to command: the export button is in grey, whereas all the others (import; customize) are black and can be actionned. Is this a restriction in the trial version or is there a way to activate export?
    Thanks

  • How do I convert .vob files to run in Final Cut Pro X?

    Hi everyone,
I'm trying to convert Video_TS files (.vob) to work on Final Cut Pro X. I've tried a free trial of a couple of third party file converters which manage to convert the files to .mov or .mp4, but then when I drag and drop them into Final Cut Pro X it gives no video or audio. Any help would be really appreciated!
    Thanks,

Did you do this from the MPEG Streamclip download page?
The installer of the MPEG-2 Playback Component may refuse to install the component in Lion and Mountain Lion. Apple states the component is unnecessary in Lion and Mountain Lion, however MPEG Streamclip still needs it.
To install the component in Lion or Mountain Lion, please download MPEG Streamclip 1.9.3b8 beta above; inside the disk image you will find the Utility MPEG2 Component M. Lion: use it to install the MPEG-2 Playback Component in Lion or Mountain Lion. The original installer's disk image (QuickTimeMPEG2.dmg) is required.
The current versions of MPEG Streamclip cannot take advantage of the built-in MPEG-2 functionality of Lion and Mountain Lion. For MPEG-2 files you still need to install the QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component, which is not preinstalled in Lion and Mountain Lion. You don't have to install QuickTime 7.
