IMovie firewire to Canopus ADVC100 playback?

Is there a way to play iMovie back thru a Canopus ADVC100 via firewire to a regular video monitor?
Do I need a driver to steer the output to the firewire port?

Hi
IN iMovie 08 - THIS IS DISABLED - GREAT LOSS ! ! !
• THE MOST SEVERE LACK/DRAWBACK in iMovie'08 !
In iMovie 1 - 6 Yes - by playback via Camera.
Don't know ADVC-100. ADVC-110 should be able to, ADVC-300 CAN do. Just set
playback via Camera in iMovie preferences. (NOT WORKING IN iM08 !)

  • Canopus ADVC100 & Tiger don't work

I've been using the Canopus ADVC100 to digitize video for years and it's worked great, until I upgraded my G5 to 10.4.2. Then suddenly the ADVC was no longer recognized by the G5. I called Canopus and they said it's a known problem with the new system software. They recommended reinstalling Quicktime (which I tried with no luck) or reinstalling the system software (they've got to be kidding..) They said the same problem exist with their newer ADVC110. So that means that all our trusty Canopus boxes are now headed for the garbage..
Can anybody recommend a video digitizing box that works with Tiger?
    thanks
    Ed A

    Marty,
Tried your suggestion but Canopus still doesn't work.
    Jeff,
You said you used to use BTV until you upgraded to Tiger, then you upgraded to QTime Pro and the Canopus worked. Did it work with BTV or QTime Pro or just QTime Pro? (At the moment I'm waiting for my QTime Pro authorization).
If I leave the Canopus pluged into firewire it also now causes crashes in Toast, Toast doesn't seem to recognize the device anymore (although worked fine pre-Tiger)

  • Canopus ADVC100 Problems (Digial to Analog)

    Hi,
I have a Canopus ADVC100 which I have been using for over two years
for analog to digial conversion and it's been working great. I just started
a new project in Final Cut Pro Studio where I was using the ADVC100 to
bring in some analog footage and then I was using the Digial to Analog
conversion to view the output on a Monitor. It's the usual way that I work.
Anyway, the A to D conversion went fine but now I can't get the D to A
conversion to allow me to view the output on the monitor. It's very frustrating. A to D works fine. D to A doesn't work and Final Cut Pro seems
to know that it doesn't work as it plays the sound on the computer rather than out to the monitor. I've checked my cables. Flipped the switches on the
ADVC100. Tried plugging the firewire cable into a LaCie Firewire port that
further down the daisy-chain. Tried the bigger pinned firewire cable. Nothing seems to work. It allows me to import but not to export. Strange...
I'm in between two project. Just ended one and started a new one.
I don't recall updating any software. Is it possible I just burned out
the ADVC100? Up to this point this unit has been totally reliable.
    Sincerely yours,
    Joe

Checked under Audio/Video settings. It looked right. Tonight I put a DV camera on the end of the firewire line and did a print to video. That worked.
Tried to do a print to Video to the ADVC100- it did it but nothing came through. Couldn't find a way to get the DV camera to Show the Desktop as I worked though... Hmmm....

  • Can't output video to Firewire via Canopus..

    Hi all,
All of a sudden today, I am not able to output video via Firewire to my Canopus ADVC-110 with Final Cut Pro 6. I do however have video output when using programs like Logic, so the Canopus appears to be working fine. I checked the Audio/Video settings in FCP and have Firewire as Video playback, but no output is going to my monitor. What settings do I need to be looking at, in FCP. It's clearly something I did, and would like to correct it, so I can monitor video again. Please advise.
Also...one other note, I can't seem to playback video through Firewire in Soundtrack Pro as well. But Logic Pro plays vide through the firewire device just fine. Anyone have any insite on this? Thanx in advance....

Make sure the light is in the DV mode...press the big button a couple times to make sure. Also make sure you didn't switch to PAL mode from NTSC or something. AND...
If for some reason you can't view your timeline on your external monitor, there are a few things to try:
    1) Make sure that the camera/deck is connected and powered on BEFORE you open FCP.
    2) In the Final Cut Pro menu select AUDIO/VIDEO Preferences and make sure your signal is being sent out thru Firewire DV.
    3) Go to the menu and select VIEW>EXTERNAL>ALL FRAMES.
    4) Click in the % box above the image and select FIT TO WINDOW.
    5) Go to VIEW->refresh A/V devices
    6) Make sure the Log & Capture window is closed
If you want it to play in both the canvas and the external monitor you need to go to the FINAL CUT PRO menu and select AUDIO/VIDIO settings and make sure MIRROR ON DESKTOP is selected under the PLAYBACK OUTPUT section

  • Imovie 5.0.2, Stuttering playback and out of synch audio with visual.

I have edited a movie on Imovie HD 5.0.2, it is about 50 mins long. When I came to record back onto my Sony DCR-HC42E camcorder (I don't have a combo drive on my Imac) the playback is not acceptable. It stutters, freezes and after a while the audio becomes out of synch with the visual. The playback is generally not smooth enough either. I have updated to the latest operating system. I have chosen standard quality playback from the preferences option and am very frustrated at the poor results.
I have 20 GB of space left on the computer.
If anyone can suggest a solution I would be most grateful.

Mark, if your Mac has just 256MB RAM it's possible adding more RAM will improve playback and your export to the camera. I wouldn't bet on it, but it's certainly worth a try. (You need more RAM anyway, so it's a good idea nevertheless.)
There may be another way to successfully export your project to your camera. Even projects that "stutter" when played in iMovie often export correctly to QuickTime. (The export to QT is not time sensitive, unlike the export to the camera.) You should be able to export your project to a Full Quality DV movie, one of iMovie's built-in export options. Exporting to QuickTime "flattens" the movie, making it easier to play.
You would then import THAT movie to a new iMovie project. That project will probably export successfully to the camera.
You may want to test this by exporting the first few minutes of the project. (To export a group of clips instead of the entire project, select them and use the checkbox button "Share selected clips only" that you'll see in the export dialog.)
You're running low on disk space, so here's a trick to avoid iMovie having to make yet ANOTHER copy of the Full Quality movie when importing it. The movie will be about 12GB; it won't be small.
Instead of importing the Full Quality movie to a new project, create the new iMovie project, Quit iMovie, open the project package (Control-click on the project icon and choose "Show Package Contents" from the popUp menu) then drop the Full Quality movie into the Media folder. Re-open the project. The Full Quality movie appear in the iMovie trash. Open the Trash window and drag the clip to the Timeline. Save, then export to your camera.

  • Need software that supports video in via USB. QT Pro/iMovie= firewire only

my friend can upload video from his cam into his pc via the USB but i can't. All I have is Final Cut Pro, iMovie HD and QT7 Pro. They All want firewire.
k, i could get a cable but i'd like to save the trip.
    anything out there?
    tnx

Sndchch,Read this article which I believe will solve your problem.
Generally USB can't sustain the data rate required for full quality video and so is not the choice for video transfer.

  • Need help with Premiere 6.5 using IEEE1394 firewire and Canopus ADVC110

I have been using Premiere 6.5 for over 10 years now and had to replace the Pinnacle DV 500 card with a Canopus ADVC 110 and firewire when Windows XP had its Service Pack 2 downloaded. Recently for no apparent reason the Premiere Capture Window is showing Unable to connect to capture driver. I have checked the firewire cable, the ADVC device and the OHCI DV (IEEE1394) device and all appear to be working. Can anyone point me in the right direction for a solution?
    Alan

    Alan,
The Grass Valley/Canopus ADV-110 should come with a copy of the Edius capture software. That is what I would use for the Captures. Just set it to DV-AVI Type II w/ 48KHz 16-bit PCM/WAV Audio. Then, Import these into Pr 6.5 for editing. The ADV-110 should allow you to capture from any source hooked to it, whether analog, like VHS, or digital, like DVD from a connected set-top player. I use a similar device in this manner.
The only slight drawback is that one has no direct Device Control, as they would from a FW connected miniDV camera. I cue up the source player (VHS or DVD), start Edius, after the settings are done, and hit Record, then click my remote for the device deck to Play. Works perfectly.
Good luck, and hope that this helps. For direct FW Capture in Pr 6.5 you would do that from a miniDV camera. Do not know if Pr 6.5 had full Device Control, or not. PrPro 2.0 was the first Pr version that I used.
Let us know if this works.

  • IMovie '11: No sound on playback but volume on scrubbing

The subject says it all.  I have iMovie '11, I get no sound on playback for audio from any source however I can hear sound if I scrub through the video.  If I export the movie I get sound there too.
I'm running 10.7.x on an iMac.
    Too strange!!!

I just found this post and I tried it, and it worked for me. I've been searching for 2 days for a solution to this problem, so out of kindness I am reposting this answer to questions that still are unsolved.
"I FIGURED IT OUT!!! All you have to do is create an event. Go to File and click "New Event". Label it and drag whatever clips you want to preview. They all seem to work as long as they are in separate events."
So create a new event (not project, event). Highlight whatever clips you want to play with and drag them into that new event. Then go back to your project and look for clips from that event, not all iPhoto videos, just that event. You will hear them, and can now continue on.
    Amen.

  • IMovie, FireWire and unreadable cameras

For those people out there that are getting fed up with iMovie and not reading their cameras... read this! I spent an hour trying to get iMovie to read my camera through FireWire. Tried everything and nothing worked. Read ALL through this forum, looking for a user with Sony DCR-HC26.
So the next night I decide to try again just for kicks.
It worked perfectly fine and downloaded all the content with smoothness and speed.
If anyone has a differing opinion please let me know, but I think that FireWire is just TEMPERAMENTAL!!

It does seem to be the firewire - I, too, spent an hour with the Genius Bar, and an additional 2 hours on the phone with support.
We were able, at the Bar, to get it to download a clip - but just once. We could not duplicate the procedure, and I had no luck with the phone help.
It does seem that, sometimes, if I unplug everything for an hour or more (including the electric power to the computer), that if I connect and start the camera first, then start the computer, then iMovie, I can get it to import from my miniDV Sony. But only once. It may do a full hour, or just a few seconds. Then, it will blue screen the import, and freeze. Looking at Console - From Log Database Inquiries: All Messages: I get---
"3/3/08 7:17:23 AM kernel FireWire (OHCI) Lucent ID 5901 built-in: handleSelfIDInt - nodeID not valid (reset bus and retry 2)

ad infinitum for the next several minutes until I manually shut off the camera.
Sure looks like firewire problem to me. I'd had NO (and still have no) problems with my camera and my older iBook, OS 10.3.9, and iMovie 3.3

  • G5 iMac + iTunes Firewire Library = Slow HD Playback?

Wondering if anyone out there has had this experience:
I have a g5 iMac and an 232gig external Nautilus Firewire 400 external drive that I've put my iTunes library on.
I also have a bunch of high def (HD) TV shows and Movies that I've downloaded from the iTunes Store.
When I try to play my HD content in iTunes, my CPU goes to 100% and the playback is so choppy its unwatchable.
I can stream content from my iMac to my AppleTV fine, so I am pretty sure its not a Firewire throughput problem.
My guess is that the g5 iMac CPU can't handle the Firewire transfer AND the HD decoding. But this suprises me.
Anyone else out there have a situation like mine that works or doesn't work?
    phil

My guess is that the g5 iMac CPU can't handle the Firewire transfer
FW does not use the computer's CPU. FW uses the FW chip to handle almost everythong for transfers which is why it is superior and faster than USB, which requires the computer's CPU for everything.
    The FW is fine.
When I try to play my HD content in iTunes, my CPU goes to 100% and the playback is so choppy its unwatchable.
Your G5 cannot handle HD playback.

  • IMovie shuffling my photos in playback

Somebody please help. I have been working on a slideshow for my wife of out baby son since he was born for his first birthday, which is next month. As of yesterday, the playback was shuffling the photos and putting them in a weird order.
They are still correct in the editing panel, just different on the play screen. I can not restart this project...any help would be a life saver!!!

  • Canopus advc100 advice

    hi,
need help with my canopus converter.
its my first time using it,have connected it to final cut 5 and the log and capture window is recognising the converter but no picture is coming through from video recorder.
    anyone that can help please????

I see you are in the UK, so you need to set the swtiches on the bottom to PAl. I think the first and second switches from the left are the ones you need to set. As Jerry said, read the maual ... there's not much to it
Make sure all your connections are right: Out from your VCR, In to the Canopus with the analog cables and FW from the Canopus to the puter. If you are using an external Hard drive, plug the Canopus into the drive, the drive into the puter
When you turn the Canopus on, at the front of the box there will be a blue light; make sure the one on the left is glowing; thats for take a signal FROM the VCR. If the light is glowing on the right, that is going IN to the VCR. To change that, press the big silver button above those lamps
I would hook up the Canopus and the VCR and have them turned on before you power up the puter and FC. In FC, set your A/V settings for non-controllable device and use Capture Now to capture

  • Changing aspect ratio from 4:3 to 16:9

I import with Firewire and Canopus ADVC100 from a Digital-TV-Recorder.
The imported footage comes up in FCPX Events in 4:3 - but should be 16:9 - as it was boradcasted. Is there a way to change this?
I'm new with the program - before i did the same thing in iMovie-Hd, and there it worked fine. Comes up there in 16:9 in the program when choosing Widescreen setting, however i see the files in the media folder as 4:3, so also these files, when putting them into FCPX stay as they are of course.
Thanks a lot for helping a beginner.....

Click on your clip in the Event Manager and then go to the Inspector, in the Info tab. You should have a "Anamorphic Override" option. Set it to "Widescreen".

  • New Monitor Canopus 100 Not Working in iMovie 06

My Element Electronics Monitor stopped working. I hooked up my Vizio TV to my computer and it works fine. I can get either TV, Computer, VCR etc. I used to be able to attach my Canopus ADVC100 to the monitor and I could watch TV thru iMovie. The monitor and computer recognized anything I had attached to the Canopus as a camera device ie DVD, VCR camcorder or tv. Now I cant do that thru canopus. Anybody have any ideas. I am thinking I need a monitor and not a TV.

Not easy to figure out what this has to do with iMovie 6.
I am thinking I need a monitor and not a TV
    That about covers it.

  • Entire frame of mini-dv video clips do NOT show in the iMovie '11 viewer in playback mode

I am editing a wedding video in iMovie11 that was recorded on a mini dv tape.  When I move video clips from the event library to the timeline, the entire frame is displayed in the timeline.  However, the entire frame of the video clip does NOT show in the iMovie viewer or when I playback the video.  I exported the video and burned it to a dvd using Toast 11 pro.  The video recorded to the dvd as it was showing in the iMovie viewer... the full frame does not show.  I would certainly appreciate any advice as to how to solve my problem.  THANK YOU!!!

Is your video shot in 16:9 aspect ratio or 4:3?
You can go to File/Project Properties and set the aspect ratio for the project.
When you get a clip that does not match the project's aspect ratio, you use the Rotate, Crop, Ken Burns tool on the middle toolbar to specify how it should be treated.
FIT will place the entire clip in the movie, and will letterbox (black bars) so that it fits.
CROP will fill the screen, but will cut off the top and bottom of your frame.
