IMovie freezes (movie too big)

Hello,
I was making a movie in imovie and I spent a lot of time on it. It went to about 32 minutes and then it froze. Now, when I open imovie it freezes. I already tried the deleting com.apple.imovieapp.plist trick and it didn't work. What can I do?
Thanks,
Nami

Hello, macocaz2007,
Welcome to the discussions.
Yes, as you know, iMovie uses nondestructive editing, thus saving an entire clip, even if you have deleted all but a few seconds of it from your movie.
But, you can get rid of all that excess footage, if you are certain you will not be needing it again, by 'sharing' your iMovie to QuickTime as Full Quality. This will create a quicktime movie of your movie that you can then import into a new iMovie project, and delete your original iMovie.
Now, you will have your movie with just the clips you want in the movie, and nothing else. The quicktime version will be just one long clip.

  • IMovie HD file too big?

I have created my first video. It's only 3:25 minutes. The only graphics are the beginning and end title slides. I was able to send it out as an email to family. Though the way it played looked terrible. Now I want to put it on my iWeb page, but when I drag it there it says it is too big and will cause slow download times. Is there something else I should do to the movie in iMovie to make it playable? I have told it I want to compress it and exported it from iMovie to iWeb. I just feel like I ought to get a 3 minute movie on a web site. I must be missing a step.
I hope someone can help me!
    thanks

That size from iMovie is the space saving import that is not a standard dimension, nor is HD 4:3 aspect ratio, it is 16:9.
This means, as Tom already indicates, that changes are required for FCE use.
If you already know the 28 mins you require why not capture that directly into FCE using the appropriate Apple Intermediate Codec if it's possible?

  • 28 minutes movie too big for DVD!!!

    Hi all
I have a 28 minutes movie in IMovie that I'm trying to burn on a DVD. Problem is size since the file is over 2G!!
Can't seem to find a way to shrink this file and since it seems I should be able to burn at least a 1 hour movie on a DVD, how to I do this ?
    Thanks
    Laurent

Be sure that your settings are for Best Quality and not Best Performance.

  • Movie too big for iweb

    hello people-
I am trying to put a movie into iweb and keep getting this warning saying that the movie is too large, how do I go about resizing the movie in quick time, to prevent the page from taking ages to load as the movie is so long.....or is it possible to compress the movie

I am trying to put a movie into iweb and keep getting this warning saying that the movie is too large
This is just a general message issued whenever your movie is larger than 10 MBs. If you used the iPod (data rate <1.7 Mbps) or iPhone (data rate of about 1.0 Mbps) preset as suggested by Rick, then your file is already optimized for the duration of the content and you can ignore this message.
    <p>
how do I go about resizing the movie in quick time, to prevent the page from taking ages to load as the movie is so long
You should probably not have to do this if you used one of the presets and are using a DSL, cable, or better connection. As to the movie taking so long to load, have you set the "Autoplay" option in iWeb. This will add code telling the browser play to begin playing the movie as soon as it has cached sufficient memory (hopefully) for uninterrupted playback.
or is it possible to compress the movie
As Rick indicated, this would normally be done in an application like QT Pro or GarageBand. If you don't already have one of these applications, then you can download the free MPEG Streamclip application, select the "Export to MPEG-4" option, press the "iTunes" button in the window that opens, and select one of the iPod "320" width options. This produces an H.264/AAC file targeted at only 0.7 Mbps.

  • Quicktime mov too big

Hi all again - I have a Quicktime MOV file on my iMac which is reported to be 2.6GB in Finder. When I put it to iDVD- it is reported as 4.16GB and iDVD refuses to burn it on a single layer DVD. Can anyone help me understand this. The Apple Theme is only 120MB in iDVD and there is nothing else added
Would I have more luck with Toast as I find iDVD unreliable and prone to crashing as well & would Toast resolve the sizing issue and compress to fit a SL disk as other products do?
Many thanks to all for any help

The 2.6GB size of the .mov file is irrelevant. What is relevant is the length in time of the video. iDVD can fit about 2 hours of video on a single-layer DVD disk; up to about 4 hours on a dual-layer DVD; and less in each case to the extent you use themes, menus & put other stuff in the project.
What is the +codec used+ and +length in time+ of your .mov file? Open it in QuickTime, then do +Window > Show Movie Inspector.+ Tell us what it says for +format & fps.+ Then, in the QT player window, move the playhead to the very beginning of the video; then see what it says for the length of the video (hh:mm:ss) at the right side of the playline (it will be a negative number).

  • Managing Video Clips and HD Storage; Psychedelic stripes when iMovie freezs

I have read the posts on subj, but wanted to clarify the ff:
As someone suggested, good idea to save the original clips and just copy/paste them into timeline so that i can edit them as much as I want. Have done so but obviously taking up much space. Once I complete with my Project (but have NOT shared it yet with iDvd NOR imported them into iDVD):
    1) can i now delete all the original clips in the Clips Pane? (it wont be like iPhoto where after deleting the pix, the pix are lost from the Books, or other projects?)
    2) how do i save the original clips in the Clips Pane to a DVD. Do i use Export on iMovie? Or do i use Import from iDVD?
    3) if I am working on several Projects, say Project 1 and Project 2, but want to use the Clips from Clips Pane in Project 1 in Project 2, how do I do that? In other words, can I make iMovie Project 1 as the repository of all my imported video clips (but not make any movie from it), then use those clips for iMovie Project 2, 3, 4 etc....... and how do I do that?
    4) Further to #3, say I really wanted to end up with just one movie - say Europe Trip, but because I wanted to work on more manageable file sizes, I split them up so I have Project 1 say Paris, Project 2 say Italy etc. fearing that iMovie cannot handle too big file sizes. I was thinking of consolidating them all thru iDVD but what I expect would happen is that since I make chapters on iMovie, once I import Paris Project and Italy Project into one movie in iDVD, I will end up having two chapters or Chapter 1, two of Chapter 2, etc. Is there a way of avoiding that?
I suppose you an guess at my current predicament. My file sizes are just getting bigger and I have the same clips on Project 1 as I have in Project 2 and 3 when they all actually pertain to the same Europe trip that I want to make One movie on.
Finally iMovie often freezes on me and then the whole picture in the screen becomes one big colored zig zag stripes. I cannot playback or do other commands. The only way to get rid of it is if I reboot my iMac. I didnt have this problem before on my MBP. Could it be bec of Leopard in my iMac?
Thanks in advance to whoever responds.
    Cheers
    Raissa

It really shouldn't take very long to load video clips. It might take a long time to generate thumbnails the first time through, but from then on, it is lightning quick, because you are only shooting a few movies between times you open imovie.
While I haven't had the problem you describe, some other people have reported a similar problem.
Imagine a scenario where iMovie generates all the thumbnails and caches that it needs, but is unable to save them to disk. In this case, when you restart iMovie the next time, it would have to start from scratch and generate all the thumbnails again. This would certainly slow things down.
That scenario could happen if your disk permissions are in need of repair. You can repair permissions by using Disk Utility, which is in your Applications/Utilities folder. It is a good idea to repair permissions periodically, and certainly every time you update OSX.
I repair permissions every night as part of a script that runs when I do an unattended SuperDuper backup late at night. This is probably overkill, but at least I never have to worry about it.
Personally, I have several terabytes of movies in iMovie, and everything runs quickly. Most of my events are camcorder movies which are stored in iMovie. However, I have hundreds of short clips taken by still cameras, and I leave these in iPhoto.

  • When I try to export from iMovie '11 I get repeated messages that the project is too big. Why? Is there a workaround? (I have already cut a 40-minute movie into three chunks...)

When I try to export from iMovie '11 I get repeated messages that the project is too big. Why? Is there a workaround? (I have already cut a 40-minute movie into three chunks... the first exported to iDVD ok, but the next one of 15 minutes balked for the same reason -- too long...)

    I wish I had a mac :-P
Sadly, this is Windows machine so I dont have a non-iOS version of iMovie.  I have 2 ideas left.  The first is xfering the project to my iPhone 4 and trying to export it there (if that works, awesome but geez apple the iPad 2 is way more powerful than the iphone 4.. youd think I wouldnt even have to attempt this).  The 2nd idea is to start at the end of my movie and delete clips and sounds backwards, trying to export each time to find whatever clip is causing the issue (when the movie was 5 minutes it mixed no probem, so I only need to go that far).
    Wish me luck?
Also, is anyone else besides me and the 5 dudes in the other threads having this issue??  Speak up, guys - Apple cant a fix a problem they dont know about.

  • HD .mov are too BIG!

I'm sharing an iMovie HD project to Quicktime. The movie is 6min long, but is over 300MB when finished. Too big for Youtube or anything else. Is there a way to reduce the size of this file?

    virtualvisitor wrote:

you should have mention in your first post.. :
settings for HiDef is as above, but 640x480 res and probably 30fps adds some 'smoothness' ..
try the AppleTV preset, which creates 'HiDef' too ..

  • IMovie still too big

I thought I had solved my problem by splitting the movie in part 1 and part 2.
I took the first part (after I cleared the rest of the movie) and tried to SHARE it with iDVD,
But I still get the message that it is too long for a DVD.
This first part is now only 1 hr 10 minutes.
Can anyone give me more help, please.

Project info choices are: Best Perf, High quality, Prof. qual. I picked Best Performance,
Part 1 of my iMovie is 83 minutes and 4.59GB
    Using iMovie HD 6.0.3
When I use SHARE I am still informed that project is too big when I attempt to burn it.
When I close iMovie and go thru iDVD and try to bring it in then my iMovie is greyed out
My iMovie has an icon with the black star inside - that is what I'm to use, right?
I must be doing something wrong! Any more ideas?
Thanks for all your help so far.
Got to get this movie off my HD - it's taking up too much room! Only have 25GB open, could that be related to my problem?

  • Is an 8.7GB file too big to import into iMovie 9?

Is an 8.7GB file too big to import into iMovie 9?  I am using iMovie 8.0.6 on a Macbook Pro running OS 10.6.8 on 2.26 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 2 GB Memory.  I can't get my movie file to import into iMovie...any advice would be much appreciated!

When you import into iMovie, your video is converted into DV format. This uses 13 GB per hour of video. So the first thing you have to do is make sure you have 26 GB free on your hard drive, plus another 10GB free for OSX to perform, plus 10GB free if you plan on burning a DVD.
iMovie has non-destructive editing. If you have used any part of a clip and discard the rest, that entire clip is still saved in your project - unused but eating up disc space. If you use no part of a clip and discard the clip, then the clip can go in the trash and you get back disc space. So...
If you import 2 hours of video (26GB) as one clip, and only use 2 minutes, your 2-minute segment retains its 2-hr source in memory. 2 min = 26 GB.
One thing you can do is set the iMovie preferences to automatically create new clips every 3 minutes. (2 hours of 3-min clips = 40 clips.) This allows you to find the 2-minute segment you want and delete all of the unused clips. Say your 2-minute segment comes from 2 of these 3-min clips, so you keep 6 minutes of source footage and delete the rest. Clips that are entirely unused will be completely deleted and give you back disc space. At .65 GB per clip, your 6-minute project is now only 1.3 GB, and you've just regained 24.7 GB of disc space.

  • IDVD 4 says iMovie is too big

I am taking my VHS home movies and converting them to DVD via iMovie and iDVD. I have been putting four tapes (they are short) on one DVD. The longest total amout of time for any four tapes combined is about 90 minutes. I've done about six so far all exactly the same way. Now all of a sudden, when I've put five chapters (from iMovie) instead of four I get a message that I've exceeded the maximum for the DVD. That is not true, it is only 87 minutes. I have changed the preferences to NOT limit me to 60 minutes (whichever one that is) and I still get the same messaage. I have taken my project down to two chapters totalling about 25 minutes and I still get the same message: that it is too much. I've tossed the .plist for both iMovie and iDVD. Done a restart. Still it persists. It will not burn a DVD of any size because it thinks (falsely) that it is too big. Can anyone help? I need the chapters, by the way, so exporting it as one QT movie is out. I could export it as five QT movies and then assemble it in iDVD, but that is too much trouble. It was working so well. I'm using iDVD 4.01 and iMovie 4. Thanks in advance.

No, I didn't want to "spank" anyone. I received the same response from different posts. Everyone wanted me to check the preferences, etc. I suppose it is a fairly common problem that has a very common fix. My problem was different. I appreciate the help.
In the end, I suppose I should get the "spanking". I assumed that iDVD would only burn the chapters I selected. To make a long story short, I had five movies in iMovie, but I only placed three of them into iDVD as chapters. I forgot that iDVD would not make a distinction. It would always try to cram the entire movie onto a DVD.
My bad. It works fine now! By the way, I use a device made by Formac. Go to:

They sell it in North America, too, although it is a UK link.

  • Youtube claims my movie is too big

I have a verified account at youtube so Im allowed to upload 5GB pr video, but when I try to upload to Youtube it claims that my video is too big and it has to be below 2 GB and 15 mins.
How can I do something so iMovie can see Im allowed 5GB at youtube?
    Thanks in advance

I suggest that you use SHARE/MOVIE and choose the size that you want for YouTube. Save it where you can find it.
Then use YouTube in a web browser to upload your movie. In addition to letting you upload longer than 15 minutes, you can cue up multiple movies, and you can continue editing in iMovie while they upload.

  • Scaled a movie, after pics are too big.

I've created a Slideshow and resized my pictures to suit the width of the timeline (1080W x 720H). Was hoping just to drag them onto new item and automatically scale the pics but this resulted in a black line along the widths; which displeased me.
So my pics are fantastic and the Slideshow is to the beat of the music. I then added a video to the timeline, and I had to scale accordingly.
So I managed to get the video fixed and everything's running great up until the video ends. I then import my new pics and they are far too big.
I have a keyframe right at the end of the movie, but the pics are then far too big.
I'm missing something really small. I am of course able to scale the remaining images down, but I have quite a few more to bring in and would rather learn what's causing this beast?
I finished my previous video, incase you guys have any comments or suggestions to improve

It's kind of a tedious workaround, especially if I have to go through that for 8 tracks x 30 songs.
while i agree it would be a nice feature, you have to remember, you're re-purposing GB, your use is not the one for which it was designed; one song per project.
you can always send Apple a feature request with the Feedback menuItem (under the GaageBand menu) to let them know

  • Could not complete the Move command because the result would be too big

trying to move a picture and I get "could not complete the Move command because the result would be too big".  It is the only layer.

    This is for version 13.1
I am getting this error as well.  I am trying to combine an ~19,000x3600pixel photo with an ~10,000x3600 pixel photo.  I created a blank file 30,000x4000pixel to put the 2 photos together.  I paste the larger photo into the blank file and position it to the vert center and horiz left of the blank file.  I then paste the smaller picture into the new file.  It goes in at the center in its own layer as expected.  As soon as I try to move it left or right I get the above error message. I can move it ALL the way left and it will stay.
Also if I just create the blank file and paste the larger file in it and move to the right or left by just a little (say with the cursor controls or mouse but move slightly) I get the error.  If I move all the way left it stays. If I move all the way right it gives an error BUT if I select undo move and redo move it goes to the right and stays.  I tried that with the small file but could not get it to stay right.
    all 3 are 72px/in
