Imovie freezes with spinning wheel on macmini, recently installed lion

When using imovie I found that the spinning wheel is on constantly and then locks up, I've increased memory to 4Gb and only run one app at a time. Could this be anything to do with recent installation of Lion OS? Or something else even?

When I say the freezing happened suddenly, I can recount to a few occasions over the past couple of weeks where I have been watching netflix and around halfway through the program I was watching, I'd get the SPWOD and need to do a hard reboot. The major issues started this morning which I can't link to the installation or update of any programs. I have managed to update to Yosemite today - however that hasn't fixed the problem. In saying this though, the system has been stable for around the last hour, but I've only opened Safari and no other programs.

  • I installed indesign CS5 on new macbook pro and keeps freezing with spinning wheel once the app opens. Is there an issue with OS Mav or font issue or a plist I can pull. All other Adobe products work.

I installed indesign CS5 on new macbook pro and keeps freezing with spinning wheel once the app opens. Is there an issue with OS Mav or font issue or a plist I can pull. All other Adobe products work.

Migration should never be done with any Adobe program.
If you have done Migration, you have to UNINSTALL first (if even possible) and then download Adobe Creative Cloud Cleaner Tool and run that also. When this is done, restart your computer and install the programs from an original Adobe Installer.
Other question is, if your OS is supporting that version. You can try it, it is not officially supported, but it might work.
But CC will work, upgrade to CC2014 (without additional cost), use that as it is better anyway.

  • 13 in macbook pro (early to mid 2011) : after the update, computer freezes with spinning wheel every 30 seconds first with safari and now with all the applications. I don't have any programs installed and still had good enough memory on the RAM.

After the update of my 13 in mac book pro (early to mid 2011) , it freezes every 30 seconds with the spinning wheel and now it just freezes. Ive never had this problem until I recently updated. Also, I just checked now for available update ( which there was one), the update would process till the last step and it shows it cannot be expanded? Now my computer wont even restart (just have a grey screen with a cursor). Can someone please tell me what the heck is going on with my computer?
I also checked the memory and it showed available memory was over 1.5 GB. I dont have any programms installed and do not have backup yet ( dont really need it anyways)
Problems: first with spinning wheel every 30 seconds and now whole computer just freezes when I restart, it only shows grey screen after the starting sound or it takes about 8 to 10 minutes to restart.
This ALL happened right after the update with google chrome crashing. I know my apple care plan expired so I cant even go to genius bar. Do you guys know how much it would cost to get it fixed ? Or any recommendations I can do to fix this?

  • Computer freezing with spinning wheel -- Heroku??

    Hi,
I'm having a couple of issues with my Mac desktop.
After it sits idle for more than an hour, it freezes.  At first the mouse doesn't respond.  Then, if I can get it moving, I get the spinning wheel that won't go away.  I have to end up turning it off, then back on for it to work.  I've had the computer for over 3 years and this just started happening about 2 weeks ago.
Yesterday I got an error message when using Safari -- "Heroku -- No app found".  I have no idea what this means.  Has something hijacked my computer? Strangely, I've been getting the same error message on my iPad lately!  Could it have something to do with iCloud sharing information on both??  Sorry for the broad questions, but I'm pretty clueless when it comes to Mac's.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

This forum category is for Older iPods, so I'm not sure how your post ended up here.  You may want to post another question, by going here first
    https://discussions.apple.com/index.jspa
and selecting the appropriate forun category, such as your Mac model or Mac OS X version.
I would do two tests.  Start up the Mac in Safe Mode
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1564
Although some things will not work in Safe Mode, you can use Safari.  Does this problem happen in Safe Mode?  If it does not, there may be some system extension or background process running when you start up nornally, that is causing this problem.
To further narrow down the cause, start up normally and create a new user account in System Preferences Users & Groups pane.  The new user account can be Admin or Standard.  Log out and log in to the new user account (do not use Fast User Switching).  In the new user account, does this problem occur?  If it does, the cause is likely to be at the system level.  If does not, the cause is likely to be something that runs in the background, when you log in to your usual user account.
Doing these test will allow additional troubleshooting to be more focused.

  • X Server (10.3.9) GUI freezes with spinning wheel

I have a problem with the GUI interface on an eMac running OS X Server v10.3.9 (Build 7W98, Security Update 2006-006).
When I login locally (with any kind of user) it ever happens that the GUI freezes during common operations.
I noticed (or better, it seems) that the problem could be related to the spinning wheel used to graphically inform the user to wait while the operation is progressing. In fact, the GUI freezes (as well as the wheel movement) when I call windows or applications that start the wheel spinning. After less than a couple of seconds everything is frozen except the mouse pointer that, sometimes but not too often, becomes a spinning beach ball. Then it seems it doesn't happen anything more. Only one to ten times, the system restarts after 5 to 10 minutes.
NOTE WELL that even if the local user is frozen, the server services are working well, without any slowing down.
I can get out of the problem only if I login as root via ssh with another terminal and launch the classic "shutdown -r now" (of course, also switching off the eMac).
I've already tried either a permission repair with DiskUtility (booting the system via the original X Server DVD) and running DiskWarrior, but without any results.
I also tried to unplug the Ethernet RJ45 connector to isolate the unit from the network, but again, no way.
    Any suggestion?
Thank you very much in advance.
    Regards,
    MrMars96
    eMac   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

    Hi Jeff,
    thank you for your post.
What do you consider common operations?
Browsing folders with Finder, running Software Update, DiskUtility, Server Admin and so on.
Can you keep the Activity monitor open and see if there
    are any spikes?
Yes, I can keep the Activity Monitor open (it doesn't have the spinning wheel, and that's another reason I suspect on it or something related to it).
Sorry for my inexperience, unfortunately I don't know what "spikes" are. I'll surely look for some explanation.
    Have you checked the logs?
Yes. As far as I saw, there isn't any important error. Have you perhaps any clue to which log should I inspect with big attention?
Most important, how much RAM do you have. I'd never try an
OS X Server with less than 2GB.
Only 512MB. It's a server for 3 people. Mainly for IMAP service and a light Joomla site (so apache+mysql) still work in progress.
The system worked well for more than a year and half (but Joomla has been installed for 3 months).
Thank you very much for any kind of support,
    Michael

  • Remote Desktop Admin 3.2 Freezes with Spinning Wheel

I have an Intel MacBook and Intel iMac, both with 10.5.1 installed. I use them to admin a classroom full of iMacs. After logging onto the computers today I noticed that I can not get Remote Desktop to function. Every time I open it I get the spinning color wheel that never stops. I can not do anything with it. I made sure I had the latest updates to the software. Still nothing. I reset my PRAM and Power manager. No Luck. I reinstalled the application. No luck. I manually removed everything emote desktop related and then reinstalled and still no luck. Anyone have any solution advice.

  • Flash problems in Safari 2.0.1 - freezes with spinning wheel

Safari is freezing up on many sites which have flash content on them. One of the sites I am having the most problems with is MySpace.com
I have the most up to date Flash player and Safari. Running 10.4.2

    Hello Pady
You use the cd only when you need to repair the Disk also known as Disc repair. Please read the Directives in the posts carefully , so that you understand them & then apply.
To run Repair Disk permissions you go.> Utilites>Disk Utility pick your Hard Drive & pick Repair Disk Permissions, you can get info after @ the tool bar at the Info button there will be messages when it runs in the window on the Utility. Really though reread the links so that you understand. Also read as much as you can hear at Discussion, that is what I do.
Also make sure that when you post you go to the most pertinent, place to post, where you will get the most attention.
I need to get to sleep.

  • Macbook Pro 10.6.8 won't shut down. Blue screen with spinning wheel.

it's an 15 inch macbook pro. since I bought this computer was working fine about last year. Somehow, start of this year, the problem begins. Everytime when i opened microsoft word 2011 on mac or Photoshop cs5, and quit the software as normaly. When i try to shut down the blue screen with spinning wheel apears. this spining wheel is endless. But funny thing is that after use other software such as games, web browser (safari) etc. and quit them. when i shut down there was not a problem. only word 2011 for mac and adobe photoshop cs5. Any solutions?

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ If you’re running Mac OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the page that opens.
    Step 1
Select "system.log" from the file list. Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes) in the search box. Note the timestamps of those log messages, which refer to the times when the system was booted. Now clear the search box and scroll back in the log to the last boot time when you had the problem. Post the messages logged during the time something abnormal was happening. That time might be before or after the boot.
For example, if the problem is a slow startup taking three minutes, post the messages timestamped within three minutes after the boot time, not before. If the problem is a system crash or freeze, post the messages from before the boot time, when the system was about to crash or was failing to shut down. In either case, please include the BOOT_TIME message at the beginning or the end of the log extract.
Post the log text, please, not a screenshot. If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
If the log doesn't go back far enough in time, scroll down in the Console file list to /private/var/log/system.log.0.bz2. Search that archived log, and if necessary the older ones below it, for the same information.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Edit it out by search-and-replace in a text editor before posting.
    Step 2
    Do the same with kernel.log.
    Step 3
Still in Console, look under System Diagnostic Reports for crash or panic logs, and post the most recent one, if any. In the interest of privacy, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if present (it may not be.) Please don’t post shutdownStall or hang logs — they're very long and not helpful.

  • Mid-2010 MacBook Pro: freezing and spinning wheel

    Hi there,
I have a mid-2010 MacBook Pro (I know, old) that's been in very good condition. I upgraded my OS to Mavericks in May, which is when it started being slow and crashing/freezing around twice a week. For example, just doing normal things like surfing the web or checking the Airport or battery life will suddenly freeze the cursor which will then turn into the spinning wheel of death. Sometimes I can wait it out if it's a few minutes but sometimes I have to manually turn off the computer and then turn it back on when it's been hours of no change or improvement. I know it's probably best to downgrade back to Snow Leopard but I'd really like to keep my OS. Are there other things I can do to optimize my Mac? I've tried keeping fewer files on the desktop and emptying out the trash often and it seemed to help for a while. Other suggestions?
    Thanks for reading!

Wow, that post looks like a mess...I will try to make it more readable.
Thanks for your reply. I had to wait a few days for the problem to crop up again. I followed your instructions to the best of my ability. The thing is that the problem (i.e. freezing and spinning wheel) happened at 8:19 and the closest messages in the Console were are time stamped 8:17 and 8:25. • Mac OS X Lion (Late 2010) having Recovery screen freeze with spinnig wheel

I have a Mac Air purchased in December 2010 with Snow Leopard. I upgraded the OS to Lion and now running 10.7.4 version. I recently tried to use 'Disk Utility' feature to 'Verify' the disk which asked me to repair through 'Recovery HD' which is done by restarting the computer and pressing Command+R button until Apple logo appears. I did that but after some time Apple logo disappeared and "Do Not Distrub" logo (an O with a diagnol slash in between) appeared with a spinning wheel. This didn't change for more than 40 minutes after which I pressed the 'Power' button for few seconds and shut down the computer.
I tried doing this again but same sign appears with spinning wheel and no 'Disk Utility' window as described in recovery webpage in Apple support website.
Can someone help me figure out the issue??
    Thanks.

There are several ways to back up a Mac that is unable to fully boot. You need an external hard drive to hold the backup data.
    1. Boot into Recovery (command-R at startup; 10.7 or later), from a local Time Machine backup volume (option key at startup; 10.7.2 or later), or from your installation disc (C key at startup; 10.6.8 or earlier.) Launch Disk Utility and follow the instructions in the support article linked below, under “Instructions for backing up to an external hard disk via Disk Utility.”
How to back up and restore your files
    2. If you have access to a working Mac, and both it and the non-working Mac have FireWire or Thunderbolt ports, boot the non-working Mac in target disk mode by holding down the key combination command-T at the startup chime. Connect the two Macs with a FireWire or Thunderbolt cable. The internal drive of the machine running in target mode will mount as an external drive on the other machine. Copy the data to another drive. This technique won't work with USB, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth.

    3. If the internal drive of the non-working Mac is user-replaceable, remove it and mount it in an external enclosure or drive dock. Use another Mac to copy the data.

  • Stuck at boot with spinning wheel for hours

    Hello,
Yesterday I made a partition and cloned my Snow Leopard in order to see if Lion worked with the software I have.
I then booted to my "backup Snow Leopard" partition and upgraded to Lion but for some reason I'm stuck with spinning wheel for hours when doing the first restart. According from the install.log it seems that the install (upgrade) was done properly.

30 seconds after finishing the installation I restart and in verbose mode I get this log (sorry for the lousy quality, with was taken with my mobile).
    I've tried everything.
    Repaired permissions, disk.
    Resetting PRAM, NVRAM, SMC.
I even left the MBP all night in this process to see if there was any progress. No luck.
Tried to enter safe mode but I only get a black screen and a new restart. (Something like PRAM)
    What could be causing this?
In the past when I installed Snow Leopard (10.6) I had some issues with my firewire (they stopped working a few months ago).
I needed to boot to safe mode in order to finish the install of SL and remove these files from /System/Library/Extensions
    IOFireWireSerialBusProtocolTransport.kext
    IOFireWireAVC.kext
    IOFireWireFamily.kext
    IOFireWireIP.kext
    IOFireWireSBP2.kext
Rebooting with this change shows that everything works properly (besides the dead firewire ports).
I don't know if the "spinning wheel" has something to do with my FireWire or Airport (which works fine in SL).. since it got stucked in there.

Finally!! I'm currently using Lion on my MBP.
With the help from members and macrumors I got this solution.
    - Installed Snow Leopard on an external drive (by USB)
    - Updated that partition to Lion from another macbook (I used macbook white).
After that I cloned the partition (without the FireWire kext files) with Carbon Copy Cloner to my MBP and... voila! :))
I'm replying to your message from Lion. Give it a try! If you don't have another macbook maybe a friend can help you.
I don't know if there's another method but this one is working!

  • MacBook doesnt boot. It shows Apple logo and spinning wheel. Soon it wont go beyond prohibitory sign with spinning wheel

I have a MacBook (Late 2008 edition) having Mac OS X 10.6.8 SnowLeopard OS installed (2 X 512GB RAM, 160 HDD). I copied some mp3 into iTunes library and soon the process got stucked. MacBook was not accepting any command/it seemed to got hanged. Carelessly, I switched the MacBook OFF by pressing the Power button. Now, when it began to boot again, all I hear was some clicking sound from the MacBook (seems HardDrive failure because the sounds seems to be from HardDrive). After few seconds, It showed flashing folder with question mark and it wont go beyond that.
    Steps I tried:
    1. Resetting NVRAM, PVRAM and SMC.
    2. Booting in safe mode.
    3. To boot from install DVD (Mac OS X 10.6.3 SnowLeopard).
    4. Holding down 'option' button while booting. It shows the "Mac OS X Install DVD" icon but as I click it and press return, it again shows Apple logo with spinning wheel and little later it shows prohibitory sign with spinning wheel. This will now remain for ever and ever.
    5. I bought a new 500 GB HardDrive and replaced the old one with this. Now trying to boot with DVD (Mac OS X 10.6.3 SnowLeopard) it again hows Apple logo with spinning wheel and little later it shows prohibitory sign with spinning wheel. This will remain for ever.
Any suggestions to overcome this problem will be highly appreciated and I'll be very grateful for all your help.
    Thanking You.

    Hi julenawang,
    Welcome to Apple Support Communities.
It sounds like your MacBook has a startup issue and you aren't able to reinstall Mac OS X on a new hard disk. The article linked below has a lot of great information and suggestions that will resolve most issues like the one you described.

  • Macbook Pro 10.8 won't shut down. Gray screen with spinning wheel.

Previous it happened on 10.6.8 snow leppord.  I thought it might be the RAM problem, so i went ahead and purchased a 16GB RAM. Now I got the RAM up running, i upgraded the computer to 10.8 mountain lion. I thought the problem should be gone by now.  But somehow, it happened all over again, everytime when i use microsoft office 2011.  I even quit every single app fron the Active Monitor (include Active Monitor), and wait for about 5min before shutdown, the gray screen with spinning wheel appeared again. I repair the disk from recovery HD, according to that, there is no problem anymore. But, once again it happened after i used Microsoft office 2011. Is there anyways i could fix it? I suppose uninstall it will make it work, but it's vital.
