Imovie graphics

I am trying to create a sports highlight video and need to put arrows on a player to draw attention to the person in the play, how do I do that?

Welcome to iMovie Discussions.
I remember this problem being discussed many months ago when Leopard came out, but - stupidly - can't remember the solution! HOWEVER, as far as I remember, the warning may be a false warning, and the best thing to do is to ignore it till you've actually run iMovie and tested whether there really are any problems or not.
If Ken Burns works - and everything else, too - ignore the warning.

  • IMovie  graphics quality

What format should I be importing graphics in to iMovie in order to prevent bitmapping (jagged, staircased edges on round and diagonal shapes). I've tried .psd, .png, .pct, and even copying and pasting in to new quicktime movies and importing from there.
I'm using iMovie 08 and the graphics are simple white on black text and graphics created in Photoshop CS3 (using the NTSC DV 720x480 @ 72) and Illustrator. What's maddening is the transitions into and out of the graphic scenes render smoothly, but the actual still is bitmapping.
    Thoughts?

Never mind, I was using iMovie HD. I'll move the question over to that forum.

  • Pixelation in iMovie graphic

I have been fighting iMovie for days now, and have read the Apple docs and help to no avail. I have a map image that I am adding an arrowed line to in Photoshop. The image is prestine in Photoshop, yet no matter what I try (what format, what file type, what have you), every time I import it into iMovie HD, the line is pixelated beyond belief. I just don't get it. What's really weird is that there is fine detail in the map which is not pixelated. This is driving me crazy. Any advice?

    Hey Don,
I think I have the solution to your problem (but it will lack explanation as to the reason it works).
I have experienced the same problems in the past with graphics. Assuming you are following all posted advice regarding size and other things, it may be a color issue. What makes me think that is the fact that the rest of your graphic does not appear to experience the bad pixelation. Ask yourself these questions:
    1. Is the color of the line unique to the image? (aka, is that color in any other part of the image?)
    2. Does the color happen to be red?
I don't know the reasons why, but in my experience, when I use red in an image, it gets horribly pixelated. Try changing the color to something else. I would recommend another color in your map, but then the line may not show up as well. Assuming your map is filled with blues, greens, and browns, how about trying yellow? I'd be curious to find out if this solves your problem.
If someone could shed some light on this color issue, I'd love to read about it.

  • IMovie 10.0.2 did not install

I have version 10.0.1 installed and was very happy to see the update to version 10.0.2.  I ran the update and software update shows that 10.0.2 was installed.  However, when I open iMovie and check "about iMovie" it still shows as version 10.0.1 and I still have many green high res photos and blank thumbnails.  If I run software update it now says no updates available.
    Any help is appreciated.
    Jack

Same issue here too.  On my iMac 27, it has downloaded 4 times and in Software Update it indicates it was "installed" all four times.  But in iMovie it still shows Ver 10.0.1 in the About iMovie graphic.  I have not tried to use it yet.  Software update is trying to download it again for the 5th time.  At 2Gigs a download, my ISP is having a fit.  What is the name of the file downloaded for the update to 10.0.2?  Where does it go?  It is not showing up in the Downloads folder, presumably since it is already "installed?"  Why doesn't the Installation fully complete - assuming it is not.  Incidently, on my Macbook Pro, it installed correctly and completely the first try.

  • Sudden problem between iMovie and my Graphics Card?

    Hello all-
Please forgive any omissions, first time posting.
    I'm running Tiger 10.4.9 on a G4 iMac Desktop, 800 MHz w 768 MBram.
My graphics info is apparently: NVIDIA GeForce2 MX:
I only recently had iMovie HD 6.0.3 start displaying an alert message detailing it's requirement of a 'Quartz Extreme Compatible' graphics card. This is news to me, since I've been using this version of iMovie since October 06 without this alert cropping up. So this seems Out Of The Blue.
Funny thing: I've booted the computer from the Tiger startup disk a couple of times since this error began - to check if a disk repair is needed - and with each assisted reboot the graphics card is correctly recognized/supported... once. One unassisted boot. After which it reverts to 'Quartz Extreme Compatible' unsupported once again.
I swung the problem briefly past a genius at a MacGenius bar, who felt the problem was probably not the card itself going bad, (as she thought the card would fail entirely if it was having problems) but either corrupted software in the system, or a HardDrive problem. I have no other evidence that my HD might be failing, so I'm left with her other advice, to do an Archive and Install.
Honestly, nothing's been installed or updated recently. If I had to guess, it
-may- have started after Quicktime failed to play an .avi file off CD this week, but I can't be sure, as I hadn't tried HD for a little while before then. Could QT bombing out have corrupted a system file?
Would you also suggest an Archive and Install? And what sort of system clean-up can I expect after such a procedure? Is there a less radical fix?
    Thanks for any thoughts,
    Andrew

    Hi Folks,
I am running a G-4, 1.25 Gz, 2 gigs ram, running 10.4.9, and a Radeon 9800 pro graphics card. I am having the same problems. I have tried the solutions mentioned here and still have the same problem. I have tried saving the iMovie to to my desk top, run permisions. The Graphics/Dispalys in system profile says
    ATI Radeon 9800 Pro:
    Chipset Model: ATY,R350
    Type: Display
    Bus: AGP
    Slot: SLOT-1
    VRAM (Total): 128 MB
    Vendor: ATI (0x1002)
    Device ID: 0x4e48
    Revision ID: 0x0000
    ROM Revision: 113-A07525-130
    Displays:
    CPD-E540:
    Resolution: 1344 x 1008 @ 60 Hz
    Depth: 32-bit Color
    Core Image: Supported
    Main Display: Yes
    Mirror: Off
    Online: Yes
    Quartz Extreme: Supported
So what is the solution...Do I have to retrograde back to iMovie 5?

  • I accepted/installed an update for iMovie and it turns out that this version is not compatible with my graphics card. So now I can no longer open or use iMovie.  Any ideas on how to get around this - how to revert to the previous version.

Look in your Applications folder.  If your system behaved as expected, you should have an iMovie 9.0 folder in your Applications folder.  Apple moved the old version there as even they suspected the new versions was a train wreck.

  • My mac book pro keeps crashing every time i try to make something on iMovies is the the graphics card? Does it with iPhotos as well.

Hi my mac book pro keeps crashing when ever i try and make a new movie on imovies or i try and upload new film clips or pics to iphotos. Do you think this could be the grapics card on the way out?

I have an iMac Mid 2011 model intel i5 with AMD Redeon HD6750M 512 MB graphic card, 8 MB RAM.
I was using the imovie the other day and down loaded some of the vedio clips from Sony camcorder.
All of a sudden today while I was trying to open the iMovie it did not a window poped up saying that
iMovie requires requires a graphic card that is compatible with Quartz Extreme................
What is these nonsence thing happening ........
Can any body provide some clue how to resolve the issue
    Thanks and regards in advance

If it was previously working then try a smc and pram reset.
If that doesn't fix it then see if vlc can handle the video.

  • I cannot open iMovie - it says I need a "Graphics card that is compatible with Quartz Extreme" I know this is wrong- Have iMovie version 9.0.4, regularly use it and have not had this problem before

Details: On my MacBook Pro, I have MacOS X 10.6.8, a 2.26 GHz IntelCore Duo processor with 4 GB 1067 MHz DOR 3 Memory.
I have iMovie Version 9.0.4, which I apparently updated inJuly.  I regularly used iMovie, and last used it about 3 weeks ago.  However, Today, when I try to get into iMovie, I get thefollowing message:
“Quartz extreme Required  iMovie requires agraphics card that is compatible with Quartz Extreme.  One or more of your graphics cards does ntosupport Quartz Extreme.”
So, I cannot get into my iMovie.  I know the “Quartz Extreme” message ismistaken.  WHAT DO I DO?

I would recommend that you turn off and restart your Mac. That should clear it up.

  • Difference in graphic cards for Imovie HD edit

    Hi.
I plan to get a new Imac for imovie HD editing, upgrading a 2 ghz imac that is very short in memory, HD, and speed. I don't play games or do any 3d renderings.
What i would like to know is which process of the Imovie or Iphoto software would be benefited with better graphic cards.
For example for time consuming process like exporting a movie or doing a clip stabilization is it faster to have better graphics (4850 vs nvidia 130 vs nvidia 120) or faster processors (3.06 vs 2.93).
Thanks for any help you can give.

You will be much happier with 4850 especially when it comes to video like in iMovie or FinalCut. This is both immediatly and in the long run. 4850 will allow for a snappier GUI, much better performance under snow leopard, great video and image quality. (just do a search for which gpu platform video or photo creatives prefer on the mac. Ati usually wins out and Nvidia usually wins for 3d work IMHO.) Both 4850 and gt130 are great options though.
In the past ATI has had better drivers for the Core image and video functions in the mac. Recently, however, the 8800gt from Nvidia has seen significant improvement so the gt130 may not be a bad choice either.
    http://www.barefeats.com/harper16.html (example of past)
    http://www.barefeats.com/nehal06.html (example of present)
As I'm sure you already know, http://www.apple.com/imac/features.html#performance has some nice charts demonstrating the massive gains in the GPU with each upgrade (gt 120, gt 130, 4850). I just want to point out that the gains in ~100MHz CPU will pale in comparison to a GPU change.
The future is with using the GPU as a co-processor. Apple will do it. PCs are already doing it!!
http://ati.amd.com/technology/avivo/technology.html ("The ATI only Video Converter transcodes up to 17 times faster than with the CPU alone, one hour of video can be converted to a portable player format in about 12 minutes.")
http://www.badaboomit.com/ (for Nvidia only. 20x faster. Though I have seen firsthand results showing ati avt using the 48xx series trouncing other cards using badaboomit...for now)
Also, you can always get something like the turbo.264 HD. It has some quirks. I have never used it. I just use it to show that the CPU is greatly complimented by dedicated hardware such as this device or your GPU.
Suffice it to say, the GPU will be THE best option for you in my opinion.
    good luck

  • Why Does iMovie Distort Imported Graphic Text?

In an effort to get around the fact that iMovie's titles don't display the same way after rendering the same way they do when previewing them, I tried to make my own titles as clips. I took the same colored gradient background still clip that I'm using in iMovie, imported it into several graphics apps (Intaglio, OmniGraffle Pro, Photoshop Elements). Then I added the text that I wanted to use as titles for opening and closing credits, and exported the images for use in iMovie, Then I figured I'd just position them in the timeline in sequence, insert crossfade transitions between them, and that would be that.
But it doesn't work. No matter how high a resolution I use in the imported title clips, iMovie renders them all horribly. The text edges are jagged and it looks like garbage. I've tried JPEG, PNG, JP2, TIF, PDF...nothing seems to work. Even the high resolution images exported from Photoshop look like garbage.
Is there any way to get graphic image text to display properly in iMovie...that is, without using iMovie's own built-in titles, which don't display properly and can't be formatted to look good either.
    Thanks!

    QuickTimeKirk:
Thanks for your reply. Here's some additional info.
Actually, I thought that I had correctly sized the images, but I admit I'm way out of my depth here. I'm an audio guy (using Logic Pro 7.2.3), and fairly adept in that domain. I know very little about video.
I measured the pixel size of the video screen in iMovie, and made an image exactly that size. When that didn't work, I started making images of progressively larger size, including some humongous images in Photoshop. I figured that if I gave iMovie some very high resolution still images, then when iMovie reduces them they shouldn't LOSE resolution. At least, that's the way digital graphics usually work. I guess video is different...
I tried using QuickTime Pro as a workaround. I stuck all the title images in a folder, numbered them sequentially, selected *Open Image Sequence...* under the QuickTime File menu, chose 5 seconds per frame (for 5 JPEG images), and QuickTime opened them as a QuickTime movie. Sure enough, the text displayed with crystal clear, sharp edges in the QuickTime Player. (I used 29.97 fps, the same frame rate I'm using in iMovie.) So, I saved it as a self-contained .mov file, and then I dragged it into iMovie. It still looks like garbage.
I noticed that I have iMovie HD v6.0.3 on my MacBook Pro, so I tried all of the above in that version of the app. All of the still images still look terrible. I'm used *iMovie's Edit:Create Still Frame* command to make the stills, but it's no good. The QuickTime .mov file looks a little better when I import it into iMovie HD v6.0.3 and play it there (the edges are somewhat less jagged, at least), but it's still not anywhere near as crisp and clear as it looks in QuickTime.
If QuickTime can display the text properly and turn it into a movie, why can't iMovie play that movie properly at the same frame rate? Sorry to afflict you with my video newbie ignorance, but I don't get it. This is going to be a problem going forward, because the movie I'm trying to make is full of still images. Basically, it's an audio program (a lecture), with a bunch of visual aids. It seems like iMovie should be able to handle it, but I've got to solve this text displaying problem.
Can you tell me how to "size my image format to match my iMovie Project dimensions"? I ought to be able to do that easily with the graphics apps I have, but how do I determine what those dimensions are?
    Meantime, I'll keep trying stuff.
    Thanks again!

  • Scrambled graphics in iMovie and iPhoto

When using iMovie and Wondershare Video Editor I get scrambled graphics which has now spread to iPhoto. Will my iMac recover by itself or is this a sign of a damaged graphic card or similar. Graphics on the internet seem to be working OK. I'm using 4GB ram, is this perhaps not enough memory for intensive work with video editing and editing in PhotoShop?

Be patient. Apple's servers are currently inundated. Try again later or tomorrow.

  • Achieving Clean-Looking (non-pixelated) Graphics in iMovie

Here's my situation... Please help if you can!
I made a short movie to be played as the "auto-play" movie in my iDVD project. This movie is about a minute long, and includes several titles, as well as one logo. Because of the limited titling options in iMovie, I created my titles/logo in Illustrator, imported them into Photoshop, and saved them as high-res jpgs. I then imported the jpgs into iMovie to be used as clips.
Here's the problem: Everything I try seems to result in jagged graphics in iMovie -- especially, and importantly, my logo. I have tried copying different sizes of the vector art in Illustrator before "placing" in Photoshop. I have tried saving the jpg files in different resolutions from Photoshop. When I look at the resulting jpgs in Photoshop or Preview, etc., they all look clean and "high-res." Why then, don't they look good in iMovie, and what can I do?
Here's what I've also tried: I have saved the vector art as a .swf file from Illustrator. I can open it in Flash or Flash Viewer and it looks great. Since iMovie doesn't allow .swf files, I think I need a way to export the .swf as a Quicktime movie. Since I don't have QT Pro, I'm sorta stuck. I'm willing to pay for it, but I'm nervous that it won't work well, since I tried using the Quicktime export feature of the trial version of MediaEdit Pro, and it didn't look good.
Does anyone have any thoughts on 1) how to best achieve clean graphics in iMovie, 2) if my theoretical QT Pro solution would produce a good (great?) result, and 3) if there are any other options besides the complex routine I described above?
Many thanks in advance for your help...
    -Jason

If you pressed the Create iDVD Project button in the iDVD tab of iMovie, the jaggies may have been added by iMovie when it rendered the images. There's info about that bug and workarounds here:

  • Adding Graphics to iMovie

Is there a way to add circles and arrows to iMovie stills?

if you need further advice, post your Q here …
when you've done it once, it is easy like that!
    3 hurdles to go:
    • the graphic has to be 16:9
    • the graphic has to be saved as .png
    • it could occur, that in iM the clip stops to play or doesn't show the graphic, don't worry! on final export all will work well … it's a 'undocumented feature'
