Imovie hangs up.

I am using imovie 4.0.1. Am trying to import still photos and make a slideshow . I get the photos in and then try to put a title on it. Everything appears to work fine, except when I run the movie it will hang up as the title begins. I have removed the title and run the movie and everything works fine. What am I doing wrong with the title? Thanks.

Hi
Not knowing the origin to Your problem - General approach when in trouble is as follows:
• Free space on internal (start-up) hard disk if it is less than 10Gb should rather have 25Gb
• Hard disk is untidy: Repair Permissions, Repair Hard disk (Apple Disc Util tool)
• Delete iMovie pref file - or rather start a new user/account - log into this and re-try
• Third party plug-ins that doesn't work OK (not relevant for iMovie’08)
• Program miss-match: iMovie 5.0.2, up to Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.4.1 - is OK
• Program miss-match: iMovie 6.0.3 or 6.0.4, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.4.1 - is OK (might work under Leopard)
• Program miss-match: iMovie’08 v. 7.0.1, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.4.1 - is OK (might work under Leopard)
iMovie pref file resides: Mac Hard Disk (start-up HD)/Users/"Your account"/Library/Preferences
and is named: com.apple.iMovie.plist
While iMovie is NOT RUNNING - move this file out to desk-top.
Now restart iMovie.

  • IMovie Hangs After Full Quality Sharing Is Complete

    Hi,
Why does this happen? I did a Full Quality Share on a 2-1/2 hour multi-clip movie (using Share Selected Clips Only). The export progress dialog hung after the export was clearly finished. I eventually had to Force Quit iMovie.
The exported movie looks fine in QT Pro. However, Movie Properties in QT shows that this movie is 24 frames longer than what I exported from iMovie. Doesn't seem to be a big deal, but annoying nonetheless.
I'm more concerned about iMovie hanging after a long movie export as described.

2-1/2 hour multi-clip movie (using Share Selected Clips Only)
so, your project is in timeline even longer then 150min? how much did you import into iM, to create such a "beast"? must be a gigantic project, hm?... Titanic II... ;-))
iM is a consumer product, we do read of reports here, that from some point of size (imported data, length, complexity of project), iM is a little "overwhelmed..." esp., iM is part of iLife, meaning, mainly meant exports go to tape (=60min max.) or iDVD (120min max.)
secondly, MacOsX is a UNIX system, which makes excessive use of socalled temp-files on (startup-) harddrive... it is recommended, not to overcrowd the drive 80 - 90% of max.
probably, your ~35GB of data transfer from a ~60GB project was simply too much for your Mac?
    helpful?

  • IMovie hangs after awhile.

I couldn't really find a forum talking about my situation, so I'll post it here. Whenever, I'm halfway through my iMovie project, iMovie would hang on me and I would have to force quite it. Sometimes, even after force quitting, iMovie just won't quit. So I have to do the tiresome job of restarting. Any ideas what's happening? Thanks in advance!

Same problem (IMovie hangs) but this happens as soon as I open it.
I get the Beach ball and can only force quit by going into Finders first, which will allow me to access the Apple menu (to force quit).
This has been going on for almost a week now. I've done pretty much everything to solve this, from repairing disk permissions and running Onyx to re-installing Imovie 08 and Leopard on my 6 months old Macbook and creating new accounts. with only intermittent sucess.
I've been using Imovie to archive my home videos on a external hard drive and only today did I notice that the problem is consistent if I have the Ext. HD connected but not so with itt.
Would there be some thing with the Seagate HD+Vantec enclosure that is causing this problem or the data that's on it? Some of my film footage on the hard drive is defective in that I believe a magnet was next to the miniDV tapes the film was originally on and the voices or sound is clipped or intermittently missing and it appears the video was as well since I'm getting a hundred thumnails in Imovie for a few minutes of video.
Could all these thumnails video clips be too much for Imovie to handle?
I have 11 gig left on my internal hard drive and 2 gigs of memory and all my software is up to date

  • Imovie hangs at the nearly end of a project

Ok I try to find more infos but I can't find postings concerning my problem.
I've got a project wich is nearly finished. The duration is about 50 minutes. Then i want to put on the last 2 sound tracks. But one of a sudden imovie hangs.
    restarting the mac-no difference
    clearing .plist(in library)-no difference
clearing cache files in the imovie events-no difference
is there a chance to get rid of this hangs.....

    ok

  • IMovie Hangs on startup if my external hard drive is switched on.

    Hi guys & girls,
I'm new here and also new to Macs in general so be gentle!
I bought my system back in April and have been running iMovie '08 quite happily, using my external hard drive to store the iMovie events. Anyway, within the last week iMovie started to hang whenever I start it up - it just sits there with no change, even after half an hour so I end up having to 'force quit' it.
I re-installed iMovie from my OS X disks and it didn't make any difference, however I've noticed that if I copy the event I want to use across to my internal hard drive then switch off my external drive before launching iMovie then it works OK.
The only thing I can can think of that I've changed recently is that I installed Skype and also a demo version of 'iStopmotion', which has since expired. Could these have caused this to happen or is it likely to be a co-incidence?
My external hard drive is a 300GB Lacie d2 Quadra, using a USB connection as I wanted to keep the firewire port free for my camcorder. I currently have 106GB available on the external hard drive.

Welcome kultofkylie to the  iMovie boards..
    +re-installing is a habitual ritual on inferior systems+ ..
stop doing that on Unix based OS' as MacOsX.. it can 'confuse' the file structure..
there are other procedures to give an app a 'slapp on backhead' ..
    to clear the fog..
external harddrive is formatted to MacOs/hfs?
did Skype install any 'codecs'? have a look in your /Library/Quicktime folder.. what plug-isn are listed there...? e.g. older perian.org plug.ins keep iM from working correctly..
did you copy your Event via Finder or within iM08?
did you try to trash the .plist?
sorry for long list of Qs, but you did a lot, you shouldn't..

  • IMovie Hangs For 50 Seconds When I Open It

I use iMovie '11 (9.0.8). For some reason, when I first open it, it hangs for about 50 seconds, displaying the spinning pinwheel cursor. I can't skim over clips while it's hanging, I can't start editing a project. I can't do anything.
Does anyone know why this might be happening? How can I fix it?

It appears the behavior is caused by iCloud pushing the information, to include the password, to Mail.
If I delete my iCloud account password and save the changes, the password reappears without me typing it in.
If I go to System Preferences/iCloud and uncheck the sync Mail box, my iCloud account in Mail disappears. When I recheck the sync Mail box, the account reappears, complete with password.
Based on my testing, you are stuck with things the way they are.
If you want to provide feedback to Apple, you can do that in Mail under the Mail menu.

  • IMovie hangs at Encoding Audio

Is it normal for iMovie 6 to "hang" when it is going through the "encoding audio" portion of a burn? Each project I've done has the "spinning beach ball of death" during the process. Anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour. The last project I tried to burn I aborted after 90 minutes.

    Hello, tarkin,
You are correct....many posts in iDVD over the past regarding the lengthy audio encoding. I think it is a concern mostly because it LOOKS as if nothing is happening for such a long time. And, of course, your own system configuration makes a lot of difference. I have learned over the past 3 years that with my G4 iMac and 512 RAM, it will take about 12-14 hrs for a nearly 2hr movie to finish encoding and saving as disk image. I burn from Disk Utility and after the encoding is done, the burning seems to be very quick.

  • Imovie hang up on start

I recently uprgraded to maverick (big mistake) and now two externatl hard drives aren't recognized.  Today I tried to open imovie and the computer hung up. This is the second hangup I've had since installing Maverick.  I never had any hangup in the three prior years with my imac.  Any suggestions on fixing imovie would be appreciated.

Thanks for the replies but I have finally worked it out and found the problem.
I had previous had a USB disk connected as a network file share (NAS) device on my wireless router but removed the disk it as never worked very well. I had defined a mount point which I'd forgotten about as it wasn't showing up in Finder. The mount wasn't an issue until I changed my wireless router last week which had a different IP address. I guess iMovie was timing out / hanging waiting for the mount point ; must be unique behavour to iMovie as the iLife products (iPhoto, iDVD, etc), iTunes, etc were all working OK.
Anyway using the Directory Utility (found in System Perferences > User & Groups > Login Options > Network Account Server > Open Directory Utility), I removed the Mount point record (needs a reboot to fully remove) and iMovie back to normal.   If anyone is interested there's more info on network shares here http://images.apple.com/business/docs/Autofs.pdf

  • IMovie hang

On a large iMovie'09 project that I'm working on (1hr 16min) I now have a problem that iMovie is coming into a hang situation every time I want to do something in the projectarea. After loading the project I can play the movie by hitting the space bar but every click on a clip is forcing a hang. I was almost ready with editing: 10 to 12 minutes of clips to go.
Is there a solution for this problem, somebody same experience? I added already 2 extra GB of memory (now GB) on my 2.4 MBPro. No result (only the project is loading faster)
Is iet too big, how to increase when im not able to enter the projectzone?

The problem seems to be that there's a limit at the audio imports. When I deleted some voiceovers and mp3's added on the last day the project was edittable. I deleted them from the items list that appears rightclicking on the project in the movies map.

  • Imovie hang-up constantly while trying to make transitions

I have really huge Problems with iMovie - the Program hang-up after I try to make some transitions between photos!
It is quite exhausting to work like this! I have already tried to restart and also make a PROM - but no improvement on this!
Please help my soon - I need your support! Because I should make some presentations till next week!
    Thanks for Help

iM is meant for camcorders as source.-
what device is in use (maker/model)?
if you do NOT use regular sources, you have to convert your stuff before usage in iM with correct settings.-

  • IMovie Hang after loading clip made by FCEHD

I am trying to load movie clip which was made by Final Cut Express HD. The length is about 11.7 GB (56 min).
But iMovie was hang up when the process was almost done.
    Any idea? Thanks,
    Kenny

    Kenny,
in FC choose only one sequence as a test and then go on file export to QT and save the .dv file. Within iMovie, choose import from the menu and locate the .dv file and open it. It should open as a clip into your clip pane. Hope that helps. iMovie should not hang itself in this scenario. What you cannot do is to import the sequence directly from FC into iMovie.

  • Imovie hangs when connected to camera

Imovie '12 hangs as soon as I connect camera (panasonic HDC-SD100) to import video material. Who as any idea what I do wrong?

It is possible that over time your SDHC card has become fragmented. You can fix this by using the menu of the Panasonic to initialize the card. It would be best to try this with an empty card, because if you initialize the current card, you will lose anything that is on it.
If you need to get clips off the current card, and iMovie is not seeing them, I would suggest that you close iMovie and open Disk Utility. Select your card in Disk Utility and create a disk image of the card. Now, mount the disk image and see if iMovie can see the disk image. This may not work, but it is your best shot.
You also might try trashing your preference files (although I think this is less likely to help, it is easy and can't hurt.) See here for how.

  • Imovie hangs on opening at Aperture videos.

I am still using iMovie 9.09 because the new version  (10) does not sort videos by date.  It hangs on opening however every time it gets to aperture videos regardless of the fact that I don't have any in there.  It also won't even let me force quit! Help!!

Yeah Me too. However I got there in a strange way. I was recording one more(thin mint) voice over and when I finished ( 6 seconds) the little beach ball from **** came on and kept kicking sand in my face for 4 hours before i realized i got eaten by the imovie shark.
I called the genious bar to set up an appointment and basically found no geniuses willing to belly up to the bar ( 2 stores). I then called appl care and what it finally came down to is messing around inside the package files eliminating one additional event at a time and seeing if i can even get imovie to open up that project again.
One thing Imovie should have that I have commended Microsoft on for years is the "backup to here every 5 minutes". What would be better is back up rotationally up to 20 copies. At any rate I am stuck with the beach ball as booby prize. THat one project will not open up.
Does anyone havea succinct and comprehensive understanding of the way imovie projects are structured on disk? I am working now at the level of opening up the project properties list and poking around the arcane maundering in there ensuring all of the relevant pieces are pointing to files that exist. Other than nothing -- Apple has been of little help in doing the following
1 Telling me which files i can safely delete and which should regenerate from first causes
2 Telling me what all the various files do and what they should look like ( yeah i know its an apple just poke the do what i mean button)
3 Explaining to me why I can see every clip that goes into that movie, but why I movie wont let me frankenstein it together with some kind of imovie property editor.
4 Concisely providing a layout and explanation of the structure of an imovie project ( Oh yeah i remember - Those arent the files im looking for -- move along ...)

  • IMovie hangs & leaves screen debris

    Hi,
I have an issue with iMove sometimes hanging when it is saving, specifically during the SAVING THUMBNAILS part. Have to use Force Quit. Also, following that when it is re-opened, it puts the first thumbnail up in the upper left hand corner of the screen - outside of the app, and then it stays there when the program is closed.
[It also won't send to iDVD, and I posted a query in that forum.]
    TIA,
    Michael

    Hi Michael
This can be about just anything.
    a. I don't use the Share/Export to iDVD from within iMovie AT ALL. It rather
destroys than make me happy especially if there is photos in my movie.
    I do:
    - Close iMovie
    - Open iDVD
    - Drop the movie project icon (with a Star on it) into the open theme window
    in iDVD.
    Vo-i-la !
    b. Strange behaviour of a Mac can be just about anything.
Most common is when the free space on the internal hard disk is running low.
This is very important regarding iDVD cause You can't set another scartch disk.
    - less 5Gb - You should not be able to get anything serious done - and what's
eventually comes out will most cetainly not work properly
    - 5 - 10Gb can work sometimes but with extream times
    - 25Gb is the way I have mine.
    I would also:
Delet iMovie pref file - could help
    iMovie
    -->/Users/YourName**/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iMovie.plist
    and
    -->/Users/YourName**/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iMovie3.plist
    AND I would also
    - Run: Repair permisions: Apple Disk Util tool (on hard disk/Applications/Tools/Disk Util tool
    and I would also
    - Run: Repair hard disk: Apple Disk Util tool - to do this You need to start from
CD/DVD or external hard disk !

  • IMovie hangs at start up

My iMovie just hangs at start up.
    Pie just circles.
Tried force quitting several times and restarting computer.
    Please help.
    Thanks.

    Hi
May be You find help here ?
    Trouble
When iMovie doesn't work as intended this can be due to a lot of reasons
    • iMovie Pref files got corrupted - trash it/they and iMovie makes new and error free one's
    • Creating a new User-Account and log into this - forces iMovie to create all pref. files new and error free
    • Event or Project got corrupted - try to make a copy and repair
    • a codec is used that doesn't work
    • problem in iMovie Cache folder - trash Cache.mov and Cache.plist
    • version miss match of QuickTime Player / iMovie / iDVD
    • preferences are wrong - Repair Preferences
    • other hard disk problem - Repair Hard Disk (Disk Util tool - but start Mac from ext HD or DVD)
    • External hard disks - MUST BE - Mac OS Extended (hfs) formatted to work with Video
( UNIX/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange - works for most other things - but not for Video )
    • USB-flash-memories do not work
    • Net-work connected hard disks - do not work
    • iPhoto Library got problems - let iPhoto select another one or repair it. Re-build this first then try to re-start iMovie.
    This You do by
    _ close iPhoto
    _ on start up of iPhoto - Keep {cmd and alt-keys down}
_ now select all five options presented
_ WAIT a long long time
    • free space on Start-Up (Mac OS) hard disk to low (<1Gb) - I never go under 25Gb free space for SD-Video (4-5 times more for HD)
    • external devices interferes - turn off Mac - disconnect all of them and - Start up again and re-try
    • GarageBand fix - start GB - play a few notes - Close it again and now try iMovie
    • Screen must be set to million-colors
    • Third-party plug-ins doesn't work OK
    • Run "Cache Out X", clear out all caches and restarts the Mac
    • Let Your Mac be turned on during one night. At about midnight there is a set of maintenance programs that runs and tidying up. This might help
    • Turn off Your Mac - and disconnect Mains - for about 20-30 minutes - at least this resets the FireWire port.
    • In QuickTime - DivX, 3ivx codec, Flip4Mac, Perian etc - might be problematic - temporarily move them out and re-try
(I deleted the file "3ivxVideoCodec.component" located in Mac HD/Library/Quicktime and this resolved my issue.)
    buenrodri wrote
I solved the problem by removing the file: 3ivxVideoCodec.component. after that, up-dated iMovie runs ok.
Last resort: Trash all of iMovie and re-install it
