Imovie HD 6--extremely choppy audio

I recently purchased a MacBook Pro.
When I capture video using imovie hd 6, the audio is EXTREMELY choppy. I take the same camera, same tape, and go to my old powerbook g4 and the audio is fine (using imovie HD 6 on that machine, too).
Even after capture, when I play the clip, the audio is choppy. I've burned a test to DVD, and the audio is choppy on the DVD. I don't think it's a memory issue as the MacBook Pro has more memory and a bigger harddrive. Perhaps I have some obscure setting set somewhere, but I can't figure it out. As far as I can tell, the two machines are set the same. Can anyone help me?
On the macbook pro, other sounds are fine (ie--music in itunes) so it's not a speaker issue. Any ideas?

Welcome to iMovie Discussions.
Sounds like (whoops!) your MacBook's busy doing other things when it's handling the audio, hence the 'choppiness'.
First, if it's brand new, click on the 'Spotlight' magnifying glass at top-right, and if it says "wait, I'm busy indexing" then do wait until it's stopped its initial indexing before you do anything else ..otherwise storage and retrieval on your hard disc will be slow and 'choppy' as it divides its attention between what you want doing, and the indexing which it wants to do for itself.
Second, go to System Preferences, and 'Security', and check that 'Filevault security is turned off', otherwise it'll be trying to encrypt and decrypt the audio ..which will make it stutter (..and will make the video stutter, too).
Thirdly, if you've got GarageBand installed, go there, and play a few notes; that should reset the general system audio to the correct playback rate. Or go to Applications>Utilities>Audio MIDI Setup, and change the Audio Input and Audio Output Format settings to anything, and then back to 44100.0Hz and 2ch-16bit, and then Save and Quit.
(If your MacBook's set up for an inappropriate audio rate (miniDV movies are recorded at 12 or - preferably - 16-bit, 48kHz) then the audio will be choppy while the Mac tries to convert it to an incorrect setting.)
Karl's identified other choppiness causes as excessive separate audio clips in the Timeline, but this wouldn't seem to apply in your case.
Others may have more ideas, but try those above and see if they help..

  • Imovie exported to mp4 choppy audio on PC QuickTime player

When I created a mp4 file from imovie, my client with a PC who has a QuickTime player hears choppy audio.  It won't even open in his Windows Media Player bc of Codec issues.  Then QuickTime plays it but audio is all choppy.  It plays fine on my Apple.  What am I doing wrong?   If I create a QuickTime file, which I'm doing now, is there a special audio setting I should change so this will work on a PC?
    Thanks!

When you export out of iMovie are you doing it using Share> Export QuickTime file or Export Movie? Believe it or not, you can export to Movie and rename the file extension from .m4v to .mp4 and get that to play on any Windows machine with Windows Media Player installed. It maybe a simple matter of saving it out to Movie, renaming it and sending that one along to the client, see if that one works better.

  • My iMovie video is extremely choppy, jumpy, shaky etc when I export it, how do I make it normal?

    Hello,
I have been using iMovie for years now, I use a HD camera, but have always imported it using large not full video. But this time I decided to go for full quality, it said playback may be bad. I assumed that when I export it all will be fine, so when ever i slow down clips in iMovie the video would be jumpy, whilst the rest of the video played very smoothly (in iMovie). But when I uploaded it to youtube it came out like this (Skip to 2 minutes in) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cpZnrdkpiRM
The whole video is extremly jumpy and shaky, except the slow motion parts! So I was wondering how to get the smoothness back?
Any help would be amazing, I've worked so hard and long on this and for it to be like this its very fustrating!!!
    Many thanks
    Josh

OK I was assuming that you had imported at 1920x1080, but it appears you imported at 960x540. Both would be fine as long as it is in Apple Intermediate Codec.
However, your footage is in 50P. iMovie does not normally handle 50P (although when you use it in slow motion, you are in essence using it as 25P). Set your camera to 25P and you should have no problem.
However, if you wish to try 50P in iMovie, you may be able to hack it and make it work. Also, if the current footage you are working with is irreplaceable, you can either follow the instructions below, or use an app like QuickTime Pro or MPEG Streamclip to convert it to 25P.
Here is a blog post on how someone used 50P in iMovie, although I have not tried it myself.

  • Choppy Audio and Video on TV without STB

For about a week now, a 23" Samsung LCD TV that we have in our bedroom has been pretty much unwatchable because the video and audio signals have been extremely choppy, sometimes it won't even display an image or output any sound.  For this TV we do not have a STB because the TV has a Clear QAM tuner and we really only watch network programming on it.  All other video works fine on the TV in the bedroom; DVDs play just fine without any A/V signal interruptions.  The problem has happened before, but then gone away on it's own for a few weeks, then it comes back for a few days, then goes away again.  Our TV in our living room with the STB has been fine; no issues whatsoever.
I have checked all of our connections and none of them are loose.  So, my only guess is that there is a problem with the signal that is somehow corrected by the STB on our living room TV, but since we don't have the STB in the bedroom, the signal isn't being cleared up.
I live in South Riding, VA and have had FIOS for over a year and a half and love it, but this one issue is driving me insane (although, not insane enough to go back to Comcast).
If anyone has any advice on how to fix this problem, I would greatly appreciate it.

    spacedebris wrote:
Yes, you can check the signal level, but it would require you to bring one of your STB's from another room into here.
What you would do is bring in any of your full size STB's and hook it up as if you were going to use it in this room.
Once connected and you get the picture on the tv screen via the cable box...
walk up to the box and starting with it turned ON
    Press  Power---->Select----->Select.   In that order
This should bring up a diagnostic screen on the tv.
Go to the line that says "inband service" and press the right arrow button
then find the line that says  SNR
This number should be between 31-37db
If it is 36db or higher, you will probably want an attenuator.
    (emphasis added)
If the number is lower than 31, then the signal may not be strong enough. Both conditions, low and high will both cause the same symptoms.
WRONG!!  SNR is signal to noise ratio and not the signal strength - usually specified in dBm not dB.  Even an attenuated signal can have an SNR of 36 dB.
     Scott -
My TV (a Sharp Aquos) has a menu selection under DIGITAL CHANNEL SETUP for channel strength.  If you have something similar it will give you a relative signal strength.  In my case it is a number between 0 and 100 with anything between 50 and 90 working without issue.  It should also be a steady reading - a "jumpy" reading could possibly indicate an overload condition.
Unfortunately I don't know any other way for to check strength of signal.  If the attenuators work, it means you have an excess of signal and  probably will have no issues if the signal goes down a bit since the AGC (automatic gain control) in the TV should handle that variation.
If you don't want to buy the attenuators you can use splitters as attenuators (at least as a test).  A 2 way is typically 3.5 dB, 4 way is  typically 7 dB and cascading you just add the attenuation numbers.  If using splitters, be sure to terminate all unused ports on the splitters. Keep in mind that many TIVO users have required 10 dB or more to eliminate RF overload problems.
    Hope that helps.

  • Very choppy audio playback for iTunes 11.1.4 for Windows 8.1

I just upgraded my OS to Windows 8.1 (32 bit). I then installed the newest version of iTunes for Windows, 11.1.4.62.  Audio playback from my computer is now extremely choppy and I can't figure out how to fix it.  Anyone?
    Thanks so much!

Well, after some messing around I solved the problem.
Edit>Preferences>Playback>Play Audio Using: "Windows Audio Session" allows the files to playback normally.

I made a movie with iMovie and cannot get the audio when I burn into dvd. I would like to transfer video to a dvd to be played in any computer and TV

Go to the Map mode in your iDVD project and make sure the blue bin at the left is empty.  That's where you drag slideshows to if you want the DVD to open immediately to that slideshow and bypass the menu.
If there is an item in there drag it out.

  • LG Tone HBS750 A2DP Choppy Audio

    My setup:
    MacBook early 2008
    Mac OS 10.6.8 (can't upgrade)
    LG Tone Pro(HBS750)
    Problem:
Choppy Audio with the A2DP (stereo audio) bluetooth profile on my LG Tone Pro HBS750. It seems to have trouble connecting properly with this profile. It will connect and give good audio for the first thing i click on. like the first youtube video or the first text I select to have read to me. They work ok in stereo. but if I play another video or something else it goes all choppy. I then have to stop using as audio device and then reconnect stereo. every time i want to listen to a new audio source it doesn't want to play properly. when it connects properly it will play several audio sources at once. but if I try to do it consecutively it doesn't want to work. it's all choppy. This is only on the stereo setting. if i use mono it works perfectly. but the sound quality *****. I'm wondering if it's my OS being too old. my headset isn't broken. it plays on mono. it just seems like A2DP implementation in MAC OS 10.6.8 is not compatible with my headset.
    what I've tried:
    pairing the headset
    disconnecting and reconnecting
    Power cycling the headset.
    Reboot my computer.
    delete and pair the headset
    exchanging the headset
    pairing the headset
    connecting the headset
    disconnecting and reconnecting
    power cycling the new headset
    rebooting my computer
    delete and pair again
nothing seems to work. I spent good money on this headset and want it to work. Thanks for your time.

I had the same issue with choppy audio coming out of my bluetooth headset.  I had the issue with Maverick and it seemed like it just got worse with Yosemite.  What I discovered is that the fix for the problem can be as simple as just replacing or recharging the batteries in all the bluetooth devices attached to your Mac.  In my case, the batteries in my Magic Mouse was very low.  I replaced the batteries to fully charged ones and the choppy audio from my bluetooth headset went away.
If you want to see what state the batteries in your bluetooth devices are in, just open up System Preferences and then click on Bluetooth.  Each bluetooth device in the Devices list should have an icon showing the charge left in the batteries.
    Good luck!
    [Update]
Well, I guess I spoke too soon.  It wasn't the fact that I changed the batteries in the Magic Mouse to new ones that fixed the problem.  It was the fact that I had turned off the Magic Mouse when I was replacing the batteries that made the problem go away.  As soon as I turned on the Magic Mouse and had it connected again, the choppy audio returned.  Turned off the mouse and the problem disappeared.  So, it's definitely the Magic Mouse that's the issue, at least in my case.  Fortunately, I also have a Trackpad so I can always turn off the mouse when I want to listen to audio through my bluetooth headset and just work with the Trackpad.  Oh, well.  Sorry for the misinformation.

Does Apple know about this issue ?
Is there a permanant solution for this problem ?

The OSX will use as much RAM as it needs and is available for the given situation.  16 GB RAM will not be 'too much' in any circumstance.
Is spending $250 on a SSD worth it? Will it mean my RAM is more effective?
An SSD will allow for faster processing.  Whether the costis worth for its benefits it is for you to decide.  It will be able to swap data into the RAM faster but that does not make the RAM 'more effective'.  As I said, the OSX governs RAM usage as required.
Or will my CPU still be hindering everything and I should just accept I wasted some money?
The CPU does not 'hinder' anything.  It simply processes the data that is sent to it by the OSX within it specification limits.  I am not certain that I understand your thinking here.
Basically: is it worth trying to upgrade & is it possible to get more out of my 16 GB RAM
That decision is yours based on what you feel you need and your bank account.
    Ciao.

  • Adobe Photoshop extremely choppy with latest Audigy2 ZS driv

I recently installed the latest SB Audigy 2 ZS drivers for Windows XP. If i work with Adobe Photoshop CS and listen at the same time to MP3 via Winamp 2.95, drawing with the mouse in Photoshop is extremely choppy. If i move the mouse fast in circles, nothing is drawn unless i move slowly. Curves appear jaggy instead of smooth like it was before. If i stop the music everything's fine. But as soon as music is played tracking the mouse in Photoshop is choppy. This never happened before.
It took me some time to figure out why this happens.
I used this Winamp installation for years without problems. Also there was never a problem with Photoshop. Mouse and its driver also didn't change for years. Then i remembered that i installed the latest Soundblaster drivers just recently.
I deinstalled the driver and now use the same as before, dated 2004-0-8. Works nice without choppiness.
For me the newer drivers are useless. They don't seem to be well tested.

Yes that is normal.  I have no problem with CS6, No lag or hesitation.
A tip for you if your creating the mask using a copy of a color channel. Set the brush blending mode to "Overlay" This will protect the mask Black and White areas. You will only be able yo paint in gray areas of the mask.   When areas turn 0,0,0 Black or 255,255,255 White they become protected too. Use a Wacom tablet soft brush low opacity and many strokes

  • "iMovie doesn't lock the audio to the video - it's an old, old problem"

Lot's of people have had problems keeping long video clips in sync with their audio in iMovie. I think what this guy says is correct:
    http://forums.mactalk.com.au/11/49711-imovie-hd-sound-out-sync.html#post608307
"iMovie doesn't lock the audio to the video - it's an old, old problem either you import in short segments so the sound doesn't get too far out of sync or you buy Final Cut Express - it does lock the audio to the video".
...and unfortunately I don't know of a way to import in small sections if you've recorded say 4 minutes worth of continuous footage.
(Come on Jobs get it together!)

You can replace your internal DVD drive, or get an external DVD drive.
Note: If your Mac had an internal drive, the Apple external USB DVD drive won't work with it. It's designed to be used only with Macs that don't have internal DVD drives, i.e., MacBook Airs, MacMinis, etc.

  • Quicktime export = choppy audio first 5 to 10 seconds

When I export a composition to a Quicktime movie file using the default settings, I get a file that has choppy audio for the first 5 to 10 seconds and then it smooths out and plays just fine.
However, when I shift everything forward on the timeline by 10 seconds and then export the composition, the audio plays just fine once the movie starts playing.
It seems like up to the first 10 seconds of the audio get corrupted on an export. I've tried all different combinations of Quicktime export settings and get the same results. I'm pretty sure it doesn't have anything to do with the audio file itself; I'm only using high-quality .wav files.
    Details:
    After Effects v8.0.2.27
    QuickTime Pro 7.4.1
    Windows XP SP2
    Core 2 Duo, 2GB RAM
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,

OK, tried the suggestion from Jonas on avoiding 'Export' and used the render queue instead and... Viola! Worked like a charm.
I went back and scrutinized the differences between the two and found the problem; the export settings were set to 44.1khz for the audio vs. the 48k for my render queue setting. I changed the audio to 48khz for the export settings, tried it again, and this time the problem was gone.
Thanks again for the tips and ultimate solution.

But the audio is so choppy as to be unlistenable in iTunes. In addition, other audio (MSN Messenger, GoogleTalk, ...) has now been corrupted and cannot be used due to choppyness. All this started as soon as I installed iTunes. I've tried updating iTunes, the sound card driver, Divix, ....
