IMovie HD 6 hang-up

iMovie HD 6 (part of the iLife DVD software) does not work.
It hangs up when attempting to work with titles. I have reloaded off the original DVD, dumped preferences, run disk utility.
I am now deleting files to create more space on the hard drive for this small movie to see if that is the hang-up.
2 gigs didn't seem to be enough space.
Any ideas, suggestions, help?
Thanks

If I'm correct, the common suggestion is to have AT LEAST 20GB free before attempting iMovie and iDVD rendering.

  • IMovie 09 import hangs

    24" iMac 2.66 intel Core 2 Duo 4GB RAM
I've seen a few archived posts on this with no apparent solution. iMovie 09 is hanging (spinning wheel) during import from a Canon Vixia. It will import a few clips at a time just fine, but if importing more than about 4 clip it will hang.
It's like it stopped talking to the camera. Say I choose 10 clips to import... and say it imports 4... it successfully imports the 4th file, but it doesn't negotiate with the camera to start the 5th (I can tell because the data light on the camera doesn't blink like it normally does between clips).
The workaround I've noticed (annoying) is to import 3 or 4 clips, restart iMovie, import 4 more clips... etc, etc.
    Any help for this?

You need an Intel Mac to import AVCHD clips. Are these SD clips?
AppleMan1958: The camera "theanimaster" is referring to is a Standard Definition MPEG2 device.
theanimaster: It seems you already have your answer - just use your MacBook. But if you must use your iMac G5, how about _MPEG Streamclip_ to perform the Camera import & iMovie for the Editing of those clips.

  • Fast User Switching causing iMovie 09 to hang/freeze

I recently purchased a new Unibody 2.4Ghz MacBook Pro 15.4"
My wife uses it to process our home movies in iMovie '09. So I thought it would be swell to utilize Fast User Switching so she could do that with her account when the MacBook was free and wouldn't have to mess with my currently logged in session.
But it seems iMovie '09 just doesn't like it. Every single time she works in iMovie for awhile, then I Fast Switch back to my logged in session, then she Fast Switches back to hers with the open iMovie ... The iMovie locks up/freezes with the spinning pinwheel of death and has to be Forced Quit. And sometimes it is hung so bad I can't kill it or switch back to my session or anything and I am forced to reboot =\
Is this a known issue? Anyone else notice this problem? And most importantly is there anything I can do, or is there any update that could be coming down the pipe, that will fix this?
    Thanks.

have you found anything on this?  I have a Mac mini running two displays... neither USB, and experience this consistently.  not finding many cases on the internet for this - sounds like a rare issue.  suspicious could be linked to video - my two displays are at a pretty high resolution.

  • IMovie Hangs on startup if my external hard drive is switched on.

    Hi guys & girls,
I'm new here and also new to Macs in general so be gentle!
I bought my system back in April and have been running iMovie '08 quite happily, using my external hard drive to store the iMovie events. Anyway, within the last week iMovie started to hang whenever I start it up - it just sits there with no change, even after half an hour so I end up having to 'force quit' it.
I re-installed iMovie from my OS X disks and it didn't make any difference, however I've noticed that if I copy the event I want to use across to my internal hard drive then switch off my external drive before launching iMovie then it works OK.
The only thing I can can think of that I've changed recently is that I installed Skype and also a demo version of 'iStopmotion', which has since expired. Could these have caused this to happen or is it likely to be a co-incidence?
My external hard drive is a 300GB Lacie d2 Quadra, using a USB connection as I wanted to keep the firewire port free for my camcorder. I currently have 106GB available on the external hard drive.

Welcome kultofkylie to the  iMovie boards..
    +re-installing is a habitual ritual on inferior systems+ ..
stop doing that on Unix based OS' as MacOsX.. it can 'confuse' the file structure..
there are other procedures to give an app a 'slapp on backhead' ..
    to clear the fog..
external harddrive is formatted to MacOs/hfs?
did Skype install any 'codecs'? have a look in your /Library/Quicktime folder.. what plug-isn are listed there...? e.g. older perian.org plug.ins keep iM from working correctly..
did you copy your Event via Finder or within iM08?
did you try to trash the .plist?
sorry for long list of Qs, but you did a lot, you shouldn't..

  • IMovie hangs at Encoding Audio

Is it normal for iMovie 6 to "hang" when it is going through the "encoding audio" portion of a burn? Each project I've done has the "spinning beach ball of death" during the process. Anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour. The last project I tried to burn I aborted after 90 minutes.

    Hello, tarkin,
You are correct....many posts in iDVD over the past regarding the lengthy audio encoding. I think it is a concern mostly because it LOOKS as if nothing is happening for such a long time. And, of course, your own system configuration makes a lot of difference. I have learned over the past 3 years that with my G4 iMac and 512 RAM, it will take about 12-14 hrs for a nearly 2hr movie to finish encoding and saving as disk image. I burn from Disk Utility and after the encoding is done, the burning seems to be very quick.

  • Imovie hang-up constantly while trying to make transitions

I have really huge Problems with iMovie - the Program hang-up after I try to make some transitions between photos!
It is quite exhausting to work like this! I have already tried to restart and also make a PROM - but no improvement on this!
Please help my soon - I need your support! Because I should make some presentations till next week!
    Thanks for Help

iM is meant for camcorders as source.-
what device is in use (maker/model)?
if you do NOT use regular sources, you have to convert your stuff before usage in iM with correct settings.-

  • IMovie Hang after loading clip made by FCEHD

I am trying to load movie clip which was made by Final Cut Express HD. The length is about 11.7 GB (56 min).
But iMovie was hang up when the process was almost done.
    Any idea? Thanks,
    Kenny

    Kenny,
in FC choose only one sequence as a test and then go on file export to QT and save the .dv file. Within iMovie, choose import from the menu and locate the .dv file and open it. It should open as a clip into your clip pane. Hope that helps. iMovie should not hang itself in this scenario. What you cannot do is to import the sequence directly from FC into iMovie.

  • IMovie 08 version 7.1 not responding - spinning rainbow

    Hello,
It seems like there are a lot of people reporting that after the update to iMovie 7.1 - they can't use iMovie with their pre-existing data (pictures/movies/projects/preferences).
Here are some steps to see if you have the same problem that I had, some steps to isolate the issue, and one thing that worked for me to get iMovie 7.1 working again (by deleting my old projects and preferences)
Please read over one other article before attempting to move your preferences - it covers the basics of isolating software issues - http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25398 - you'll also want to make notes on paper when you start moving folders in case it doesn't work and you want to undo the changes you make.
    1) Do you have the problem?
If activity monitor and/or force quit window show that iMovie is drawn in red and not responding for more than 5 minutes. If you normal quit the program (command Q) - iMovie will exit promptly - there should not be a need to force quit the application.
    2) Isolate the issue.
Your mac could have other problems and iMovie might not be the issue. I would make a new account in the account preference pane, log out of your accout and log in to the new account. Fire up iMovie - if it hangs there too with no prior preferences, no old events, no movies in the iPhoto library - you can be pretty sure there's something else going wrong. It might be worth re-installing the updates or reloading your OS - but the workaround I will propose below won't likely help you find or fix your problem.
    3) Workaround
Set aside your old preferences and movies to get iMovie 7.1 working again. Then you should be able to re-import the raw video again and do some work with your current version of software (since there is no uninstall for this update). This won't actually fix your data or the iMovie program - you'll have to wait for another article or tool or update if you can't leave behind your old data... If you have lots of time, you might try things one by one to figure out what exactly was wrong - but I didn't have the time or inclination to debug this further - so I'll document what I've done in case it helps someone else...
    a) Quit iMovie (heck - quit all apps you can since I will propose moving the caches aside)
    b) Make a folder on your desktop called "old" or whatever you please and move these things there:
Your iMovie preferences stored in ~/Library/Preferences
Your iMovie data folders (Projects, Events, etc...) stored in ~/Movies
Your Caches folder stored in ~Library
    c) Log out of your account (so any programs using old Caches are forced to make new Cache files)
    d) Log back in to your account. If you are not paranoid - fire up iMovie - it should start fine. At that point you can pick to leave the old projects behind and start again - or quit iMovie and move the old folders back (trash Caches - move the other items back to where they were before overwriting the "new" Preferences and folders...
    e) If you are paranoid or firing up iMovie still didn't work - download and reinstall iLifeSupport81.dmg and iMovie_710.dmg to be sure you have the latest versions installed correctly.
    Good luck,
    Mike
p.s. I don't think anyone that has this problem could have fixed their data to prevent this "lock up" - and since it's fairly widely reported - I'm hoping a new update might be able to let iMovie 7.1 handle the same data that iMovie 7.0 was using just fine before the update. For those that program - here is a sample of my iMovie when it locked up...
<pre>2007-09-27 21:33:37.299 sample[405\] threadreadstack: stack appears to be corrupt
or in inconsistent state. Truncating stack.
2007-09-27 21:33:37.309 sample[405\] threadreadstack: stack appears to be corrupt

2007-09-27 21:33:37.309 sample[405\] threadreadstack: stack appears to be corrupt
or in inconsistent state. Truncating stack.
    </pre>
(the stack was really corrupt - this line was printed 598 times while the sample program was trying to see what iMovie was up to when the beach ball was spinning - it's not normal for a properly running program to have a corrupt stack so I'm not surprised that iMovie could never regain it's wits once it went off the deep end so to speak while looking over the files it was preparing to work with)
Here's the good part of the sample that seems to show the program in the process of building up the list of media it needs to work with (which needs to happen when the program starts and before we get to use the program)
    <pre>299 -[ILMediaGroupsTreeController reloadAllGroups\]
    299 -[ILMediaGroupsTreeController filteredGroupHeirarchy:\]
    299 -[ILMediaBrowserView _shouldDisplayMediaGroup:\]

    299 -[ILMediaGroup allMediaObjects\]
    299 -[ILMediaGroup allMediaObjects_SearchedGroups:\]
    261 -[NSArray containsObject:\]
    261 _NSArrayIndexOfObject
    175 _ArrayIndexOfObject
    97 objc_msgSend
    </pre>
Again - I don't have source code for iMovie - so I may be way off on my guess - but it seems like the program version 7.0 wrote or handled data in a way that makes 7.1 mighty unhappy.

    Mike,
I also had a bunch of bugs appear when I got the automatic update.
I went and offloaded this file
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/imovie71.html
And the bugs were not there after I reinstalled.
    Hope that helps,
    Cheers,
I'm now tryign to figure out the volume controls.....

  • IMovie freezes during playback

I have built a 9 minute IMovie, and it hangs up whenever it gets to the short videos that are included with the photos - just freezes up. I have reloaded it, but no change. Any help appreciated....

You might be able to narrow down which item is causing the problem and deleting it. First create a duplicate project:
Click the Project Library button and highlight the name of your project by click on it just once so that it will be colored in blue.
Go to File Menu > Duplicate Project, iMovie will create a duplicate with a number added to the end of the name
Open the Duplicate project and try deleting a picture, or transition or video clip where the video freezes or even just before the point where it freezes.
Playback the movie and see if it reacts differently.
Just try one thing at time and you might discover it's one item in the Project timeline that's causing the problem. Once you find the source of the problem, you can try replacing it or just leave it out until you finish the project and export it. Sometimes it's difficult to figure out how something got corrupted and subsequently how to ressurect it.

  • Backing up iMovie files to make hard drive space available

has anyone developed a good process for backing up iMovie event video on an external drive, but still working on those events in iMovie?  Or do you have to copy the event back to the hard drive to work in the event?

  • IDVD5 hangs up on encoding audio of project

Trying to create DVD from iMovie but always hangs up when commencing to encode audio. Settings are on Best Quality/Pal. Have deleted preferences etc in iDVD. Any ideas please?
    iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.2)

    Hi Ossie!
This question is in our Top Ten!
It is probably not 'hanging'. Disregard any messages that iDVD is not responding. It is.
Encoding audio is the slowest part of rendering, and can take many hours. Great patience, even an intermittent alternative hobby, is called for.
Make sure no other application is running, make sure you have not set the hard disk to go to sleep and that the screen saver will not come on. Leave it overnight, or have a 36 hole game of golf.
Sooner or later iDVD will finish!

  • IMovie won't open on Mac Pro (Intel, 10.5.3) -- just hangs

I don't normally use iMovie but tried to open it today on my MacPro and strangely it just hangs while launching.
I reinstalled from the discs that came with the computer, but that made no difference. I deleted iPhoto and iMovie preference files, but that made no difference. I've even turned off Little Snitch as I saw on the web that there was a potential conflict there. I've run software upgrade and everything is apparently up to date (iMovie is version 7.1.1) I have also looked at the package contents for iMovie as suggested on another site, but everything seems to be there.
I have no idea why the application won't run. Does this sound familiar to anyone? Is there another conflict between iMovie and any other known applications?
    Thanks

Thanks for the suggestions... tried changing resolution and that had no effect, and I've checked my Perian and DivX installations in System Preferences and both say they are completely up to date. I upgraded Quicktime today to 7.5 before all of this became a problem -- but I don't know how to upgrade iLife. In Software Update everything is completely up to date (eg each of the iLife apps).
Oh well, iMovie is not very useful to me anyway -- just somehow annoying that it fails to work. No point flogging a dead horse!!
Any other ideas gratefully received... many thanks in advance

  • IMovie Hangs For 50 Seconds When I Open It

I use iMovie '11 (9.0.8). For some reason, when I first open it, it hangs for about 50 seconds, displaying the spinning pinwheel cursor. I can't skim over clips while it's hanging, I can't start editing a project. I can't do anything.
Does anyone know why this might be happening? How can I fix it?

It appears the behavior is caused by iCloud pushing the information, to include the password, to Mail.
If I delete my iCloud account password and save the changes, the password reappears without me typing it in.
If I go to System Preferences/iCloud and uncheck the sync Mail box, my iCloud account in Mail disappears. When I recheck the sync Mail box, the account reappears, complete with password.
Based on my testing, you are stuck with things the way they are.
If you want to provide feedback to Apple, you can do that in Mail under the Mail menu.
