IMovie HD and AVCHD

I intend to buy a new camera working with AVCHD.
Can I edit this format with iMpvie (any version) ?
If not, can somebody recommend a suitable (preferable free) video-cut program for Mac ?
Thank you for help.
HEZ

No, AVCHD requires iMovie '08 or (better) iMovie '09.
AVCHD can be converted to use in iMovie 5 HD and/or iMovie 6 HD.

  • Having issue trying to import large (23min) clip into iMovie 08 and FCEx 4.0.1

Through my iMac 2.0GHz 2GB ram, Intel Core Duo using OS 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard).  Try to no success to import a 23 min AVCHD clip into either
iMovie 08 or FCEx 4.0.1.  I know my mac, OS and software are antiquated by today's current editions, but that said never had this issue before.
Footage was shot with Sony NX5u camera using SDHC (class 10) media.  The event I shot has 54 video clips on the card.  All but this large clip
will import. So I don't think it's some kinda of file structure issue.  Otherwise I think none of the clips would have imported into to either editing program.
Each (iMovie 08 and FCEx) will begin the import process for this large clip. iMovie begins to import, but in the end only 11:28 of the full 23 min. get imported.
FCEx after beginning to import eventually aborts the import.  I know in the past I've been able to import long clips (15-20min) with no issues.  Maybe
someone here has a solution.  Dare I say I need to bump my ram up to 6GB, upgrade to Yosemite, upgrade to latest iMovie or FCPX.  Considered trying
Adobe Premier.  Right now I'm wide open for any suggestions on how to tackle this problem.

    Hi M
First thing that comes to mind is - Have You just installed FinalCut on
Your Mac. There are a known problem with this so that You have to
go to Library folder and move out FCE or pro files to make share back
to camera to work in iMovie.
    my notes:
This can happen with iMovie 3 or iMovie 4. This does not occur with iMovie HD 5.0.
The solution is to temporarily move the following files from /Library/QuickTime / to the Desktop:
    Final Cut Pro HD
    ? DesktopVideoOut.component
    ? DVCPROHDVideoOutput.component
    Final Cut Express HD
    ? DesktopVideoOut.component
Restart the computer and try exporting from iMovie to your camera.
When you need to use Final Cut Pro HD or Final Cut Express HD again, drag these files back to /Library/QuickTime / and restart the computer.

  • Is the new iMovie 10 support avchd 60p?

    Hi,
I would like to upgrade my imovie'09 to new imovie10 but what I need is avchd 60p (mts) support? I found only that information: native support for avchd video...please help
    thank you.

Note that if you use 60 fps clips for 50% slow-motion in a project, all frames are used in the exported 30 fps movie. Slow-mo is therefore the only situation where 60 fps clips have an advantage over 30 fps when using iMovie 10.
iMovie 9 and FCP 10.1 on the other hand can share 60 fps exported movies.
Using iMovie 9 with 1080p 60 fps, one has to transcode the clips individually before importing since it only supports import from AVCHD v1 directories which are limited to 1080p 30 fps

  • How do I get AVCHD Lite and AVCHD videos to play in Front Row?

How do I get AVCHD Lite and AVCHD videos to play in Front Row? They use the .mts file extension, and can be played in VLC.

You will have to be able to play them in QuickTime before they'll be available in Front Row. It looks like the current version of iMovie will edit/play AVCHD movies. Can you put one of your videos into iMovie and export it as a QuickTime file?

  • IMovie '08- Importing AVCHD

I have a Sony HDD camcorder (HDR-SR5), and its miserable to transfer files. Here is my current workflow:
    1) Connect with USB
    2) Manually select what to import, save to an external airport drive (hardly any hard drive space) and
    begin download.
    *wait forever*
    3) Alright now they are .mov saved in events.
    4) I go to iMovie HD and select import. I pull up the quicktime files. There are a bunch of files and
it takes about 4 minutes to download a 30 second file. I would hate to try to download each one.
I was just wondering if anybody has any ideas to consolidate this process. I'm open for any suggestions. Right now this process makes me miserable; deterring me from using my camcorder.
Also! If anybody could help me with controlling my camera from the computer (selecting it instead of iSight) I would be very thankful. I'm wanting to do some timelapses outside my window. Thanks!
    Thanks in advance,

I take it from this new thread that you were unable to return/exchange the cam with Sony. That's too bad, but you seem to be making progress, albeit at more of a snail's pace. I didn't realize your cam format was AVCHD in the previous thread, otherwise I might have mentioned that this format does take more processor time in iMovie 08. Hopefully someone who knows about this aspect better than I will help out.
Re Richvid's post, here is something I found on the Sony site, from last April, when your cam became available. It's just one line from the review of the AVCHD cams, but maybe you want to investigate if this item is available yet.
"Sony has plans to release a DVDirect recorder that will allow high definition DVD creation without the use of a PC."
I would be remiss in my mission to promote miniDV if I didn't also say:
Of course, there's more expense (Sony's DVDcorder), which you probably weren't counting on, but Sony is, and add that to your near hatred of your brand new cam's hassles and it sure makes the idea of a nice simple miniDV cam even more palatable.

  • IMovie HD and Imovie 08 on the same machine ?

    Silly question
On my previous computer I used to have IMovie 6 and IMovie HD and both were running flawlessly.
On the new computers with 10.5 we only got Imovie08, which is quite awkward to begin with..
I guess that if I have no HDV / AVCHD content it is possible to run IMovie HD as well ?
    Thank's

..Just to prove it, here are iMovie 2.1.2 and iMovie '08 running happily together (click on the picture for a larger, clearer version..)

  • IMacs and AVCHD nex 5

    Hello,
i am very new to the world of the mac, having always used a pc and have a long way to go before i learn how to use it properly.
one of the reasons for the switch from pc to mac was a new camera i had bought and wanted to learn to use properly, then edit photos and videos.
i have a nex 5 camera. the bundled software with the pc is great, the pmb software is great for the AVCHD videos, but i didn't realise this is not supported on the mac.
my old videos i cannot get to play on the mac, without first converting to mp4, which loses a whole lot of quality.
new videos i can play with imovie 11, but when the videos are imported they are made into .mov files.
so my question is am i losing quality by doing this? i have seen on the web that people recommend aunsoft to do a conversion would this be better?
i just need to know the best way to get my movies from my nex 5 to the mac, both from old movies and new direct from the camera, losing the least quality and still being able to edit them.
any help would be appreciated, simple speak would be good to as this is a whole new world and i have never been up on the technical side
    thanks
    Jacks

I have a NEX-VG10 and use imovie 11. I just posted about an ebook for all the NEX cameras (that covers imovie 11 and other editors like Veagas) and an ebook on imovie 11. Your NEX-5 shoots the same video as my VG10.
you need to buy the imovie book because you need to use a software utility after you import avchd from the camera. the utility is free with the ebook.

  • FCE and avchd how does it work?

    Hi everybody,
I'm interested in FCE for editing avchd but I don't know how it works.
I mean, when I log and capture from my sony hdr sr12, can you see and edit it straight as it is or is avchd to be converted into another codec more FCE friendly?
That would mean one more step and as consequence there would be a quality degrade.
Does anyone Know how it works?
    Thanks a lot in advance
    Paolo

apple has posted these details regarding AVCHD
"iMovie ’08 and Sony HDR-CX11, HDRCX12, HDR-SR1 and HDR-SR7 cameras work with AVCHD (high-definition) and MPEG-2 standard definition (SD) content when you follow these guidelines.
If the Sony HDR-CX11, HDRCX12, HDR-SR1, HDR-SR7 and HDR-SR12 cameras contain both HD (AVCHD) and SD (MPEG-2) content, iMovie ’08 can import the SD (MPEG-2) content. However, to import the HD (AVCHD) content to an Intel-based Mac, you must first erase the SD (MPEG-2) content on the camera."

  • Quicktime and AVCHD

Does anyone know if there are plans to add the AVCHD codex to Quicktime,
I can import directly to iMovie08, but i hate using it, and i know it also imports to FCP6, but i don't have that and can't afford it yet,
I do have FCP5 and would rather edit in there so, i ask again, AVCHD on Quicktime?

Sorry, but no one here knows what future plans Apple might have for QT and any new features.
The most expedient way to use AVCHD content in FCP5 may be to ingest it into iMovie '08 and then export it to a .mov file. There are also third-party converters such as MovieConverter Studio amd VolaticHD that might work for you.

  • MOD and AVCHD files

I have a JVC camcorder that takes MOD movies files and a Lumix camera that takes AVCHD files.
But when I connect the Lumix the AVCHD files do not display for download. Can anyone help with what's happening here?
Also, will need some software to watch the MOD and AVCHD files when they do get downlaoded. What can anyone recommend? - would prefer to get one software package that will work on both types of files.

    for the Lumix, use iMovie
for .mod, use iMovie too, read Chris' advice here, no additional tools needed:

most Apple apps use their own internal workflow, which is triggered only, when you import straight from cam. so, 'Image Capture' isn't choice #1 to import video.

  • Aperture and AVCHD Lite support

Apple implies on their Aperture 3 features site that AVCHD and AVCHD Lite is supported. See http://www.apple.com/aperture/features/#video/ . Does anyone know if Aperture supports AVCHD Lite for video transfer from a Panasonic DMC-ZS7 to my MacBook Pro?

I bought the Panasonic DMC-ZS7 today.
I was able to use Aperture3 and import still images and motion imagery from my Panasonic DMC-ZS7 into my MBP. I was also able to do this with iPhoto and iMovie.
The camera does not support AVCHD or AVCHD Lite. However, the camera has a user selectable option in the menu to shoot Motion JEPG (.MOV) HD video.
Both the still images and motion imagery look great! I can view the motion images in Aperture3, QuickTIme, or iMovie.
GPS works well with the camera, Aperture3, and iPhoto as well.

  • Canon HG-10, iMovie HD and iMovie '08

Just realized that I can not import video from my new Canon HG10 using iMovie HD. After seeing the dreadful reviews for iMovie '08, my question is this: Can I buy iMovie '08 and use it just to import from the Canon and then use iMovie HD to edit etc..Or is there some other way to import the video from the Canon and then use iMovie HD? Or do I return the Canon and look for an HD camcorder that works with iMovie HD? Guidance appreciated.
Message was edited by: Karl Edgren

I have a Canon HG-10 as well. Let me explain, take a couple of minutes to read patiently:
AVCHD is a relatively new type of compression, based on MPEG 4 H.264 codec. It is probably the most efficient compression to date. It allows you to have GINORMOUS amounts of HD video in a little minuscule handheld device. That is what it was created for.
Because of engineering aspects of the type of compression, based on the GOP concept, IT IS NOT A FORMAT SUITABLE NOR MEANT FOR EDITING ON ITS NATIVE FORM. IT WAS ALSO POPULARIZED AFTER iM06 HAD BEEN RELEASED. As a consequence, you cannot import AVCHD into iM06. iM06 has the following formats: MPEG 4, DV (SD & HD), iSight. iM08 has been released with the capacity to import two formats 06 is not: AVCHD & MPEG2.
Because AVCHD is not meant for editing, iM08 imports AVCHD and transforms it, or transcodes it into Apple Intermediate Coded, WHICH IS MEANT FOR PRECISE FRAME-SPECIFIC EDITING, with very little demands for CPU power, they are manageable more easily by your computer. There is very little if any loss of quality on this transcode. As a consequence the file will be several times larger than the original you imported. Somewhere around 20 Gigs per hour of HD video.
Now. Because iM08 gives you AVCHD capacity, USE IT TO IMPORT, it will get transcoded to AIC. Now in your "Events" folder, create a "Project" with the selected clips or all the clip, whatever suits the case, and then you can "Export using Quicktime" from the "Share" Tab on top.
Select a iM06-compatible format, and export. Once you have the file in 06 compatible format, import into 06.
Because the file inside 08 is quite large, go ahead and erase it if you do not need it anymore, and that is it, that way you recover your hard drive space.

  • IMovie 4 to iMovie HD and back again

I have read countless threads on issues related to choppy video in iMovieHD, but I haven't yet discovered a solution to my situation. I'm also dizzy with all the options, iMovie 4 vs iMovie HD, QT 7 vs QT 6.5.2, QT Cache Size, etc...
In years past, I have used iMovie 4 successfully on a number of big projects. These movies were usually from 60 to 90 minutes, with tons of video clips, audio clips, stills, transitions and effects. I never had a problem. This is work repeating. I never had a problem.
Then enter stage iMovie HD, and Quicktime 7. Neither seemed to have new features that I needed, but I figured, what the heck, maybe it improves performance. This is where my nightmare begins. I honestly do not know which software it the culprit, but I was in the middle of one of the most important video projects yet (and one of the biggest). Perhaps I deserve my fate since I didn't save the iMovie 4 project file, but I'm hoping some of you will be forgiving. Yes, I converted my iMovie 4 project to iMovie HD, and did not save the old project file. I didn't notice (or don't remember noticing) at first, so maybe the problem didn't start until I upgraded to QT 7. But at some point in time, I noticed a big problem in my project. I would start playing the movie to see how things were coming together, and my video would just freeze at arbitrary points (after a minute or so of playing okay). It starts getting choppy first, then the frame just freezes. The playhead continues to movie, and choppy audio is heard, but the video just seems to die.
I wiped the drive, and reinstalled iLife 04. I'm running OS X 10.3.9, and software update updated me to Quicktime 7 again. So I have a number of questions, all hopefully leading to resolution of this issue. I've lost weeks of time on this project, and I need to get it back on track.
    1. I have the iMovie HD project, but I want to work on it in iMovie 4 instead (had better luck with iMovie 4). Is there any way to mod the iMovie HD project file, or any utility, so that I can open it with iMovie 4 (and have all my clips and transitions, etc., restored)?
    2. Was downgrading from iMovie HD to iMovie 4 the wrong solution completely? Is the culprit really Quicktime 7?
    3. Does the latest Quicktime resolve this issue? I'm trying to decide whether I should upgrade to iMovie HD again. I really don't know what to do at this point. There's so much at stake, but lately my productivity has been zero, so something has to happen.
I guess I'm looking for a direction to go, and I currently feel very lost. Reading the past threads made me dizzy. I just want things to be the way they were: working. Can someone push me in the right direction?

Now I know how you equated donmerlin with Bill... I got so flustered with this problem, I ended up forgetting which Apple ID I posted under. Here is an update to the problem.
I really wanted to stay with QT 7.0.3 because the latest DVD Studio Pro requires it (as does iTunes for video playing). I tried to stay with QT 7 and revert back to iMovie 4, but because the old iMovie 4 project file was converted to iMovie HD (and there's not way to go back), I basically had to recreate the iMovie project from scratch. I started to do this, by first creating a new iMovie 4 project, then copying all of the 100's of media files from the other project into this one. Once I realized the magnitude of work involved, figuring out what's what, and which clips are transitions and effects, I knew this was a bad way to go. And chances are, it would have still been a problem, since most of what I've read has to do with QT 7 being the problem. So I changed directions.
I am fortunate enough to have two G4's, so I left QT 7.0.3 on this one, and decided to downgrade QT on my other G4. First I ran the QT 7.0.1 Reinstaller (had to use Pacifist, since the Apple installer refused to let it run). Then I ran the QT 6.5.2 Reinstaller. After that, I opened up the iMovie HD project, and lo and behold, the freezing and staggering playback issues were gone! Words cannot express the feeling of relief I had. In retrospect, I am still quite disappointed that Apple introduced an upgrade to QT that caused this horrible problem, and appears to have done nothing to resolve it. The good news is that I found my way around the problem via the QT downgrade path, and I'll never upgrade QT on this other G4 again. Thanks to everyone in sharing in my grief and posting suggestions (both in response to my post and others).

  • 3.1 library not compatible with iMovie '09 and iDVD 7.0.4 ???

I took the Aperture upgrade last night to 3.1 and Aperture itself appears to be running ok, although I haven't tested a ton of the functionality yet. What I was working on was wrapping up a wedding I shot and am putting the final touches on the movies and DVD for my clients.
However, since the upgrade neither iMovie '09 nor iDVD 7.0.4 can access my Aperture library. They seem to think they can see it, but all that happens in the wheel sits and spins. I though maybe this was due tot he current size of my Aperture library (170 gig, about 40k images) but after letting iMovie sit and spin for about 6 hours I don't think that is the problem.
Looks like there is a compatibility bug here.
    iDVD screenshot: http://www.vensland.com/wp-content/gallery/blog-photographs/screen-shot-2010-10- 24-at-10-59-11-pm.png

To Tony: This is a known bug in Aperture 3.1 as earlier posts show. I do have the same bug. I went into few steps for solving it, but didn't find a working way. What I did:
I created a new empty library and imported few photos. This library works, iLife shows the library contents in iPhoto, iMovie and so on.
I exported few projects from my main library and created from them a new library. This library is about 30 GB and it works too.
I exported then my whole library to a new library. This tooks me over 6 hours because the library was around 300 GB with 25k photos. This library still does not show in iLife media browser.
I did a repair permissions and check database consistency on this library too. No change.
As the smaller library with only 30 GB in size does function as expected, it seems it has to do with the larger size of the second or main library or there is something wrong in there.

  • I have produced several short iMovie projects and want to link them into a continuous stream on a DVD.  Can it be done?  All of the projects are in my Moblie Me Gallery

I have produced several short (2 to 3 minute) iMovie projects and want to link them in a continuous stream on a DVD.  The clips are in my Mobile Me gallery.  How can it be done?

You can do that too, it's all in the iDVD program.
But first you want to assemble the separate clips into one big long clip. For that you would use iMovie. Share to the Media Browser (choose the Large size). Let it export then quit iMovie.
Open iDVD, click on the Media button and then the Movies button. Under the iMovie star icon you will see your final assembled clips movie. In the iDVD project window turn on the map view (it's little boxes that look like a flowchart) then drag the iMovie project into the first box:
You can set the project to startup without a Menu, and then loop continuously as well. Go up to the Advanced Menu then click on the Loop movie option to turn it on.
Once checked the Loop movie status will appear as curved arrow icon in the Project Window:
In the lower right corner is the icon indicating this video clip will loop while being played.
