IMovie HD, Quicktime 7, Leopard and Export to Camcorder problem

I'm hoping someone has seen this behavior before. I am working with a pretty old setup but it shouldn't be the problem it is.
I'm working on a 1.25GHz G4 Flat-Panel iMac. I have a Sony DCR-HC96 tape camcorder (firewire 400). I am using iMovie HD (6) and want to export my edited movies back to the the camera for archiving in DV. In Tiger, There is no problem. In Leopard, iMovie begins the export but the video stream never gets out of the computer. The camera goes to record mode but only records a black screen and audio.
I have installed Tiger 10.4.11 on an external drive with a copy of iMovie HD. As I write this I realize I don't know the version of Quicktime I'm using in Tiger. I have to boot to the external drive to do the archiving.
I was wondering if maybe the driver for the camera has changed between OS X versions. Is this something that would be stored in a Quicktime support directory or in an OS X directory? Can I move something from the Tiger install to get this to work in Leopard?
Where do I begin to troubleshoot what is obviously a software problem.

"Square" pixels versus "rectangular" issue.
When viewing DV files in QuickTime the size used to be reported as 640X480 (NTSC here) instead of 720X480.

  • Leopard and Adobe Photoshop CS2 problems...

    I've been reading the posts about Leopard and CS2 problems and have to say that I'm confused. A great many of you have had issues from the very beginning as soon as you upgraded to Leopard. I did not. I use a VERY basic set-up without third party plugins and suspect that to be why I had no problems. At least until now... I looked back through my documents to be sure, and my Photoshop was working beautifully through the first week of January. Somewhere between then and now there had to be an update from Apple that broke Photoshop. I haven't changed any settings since it last worked, and there certainly haven't been any updates from the greedy buggers over at Adobe because they don't support CS2 anymore apparently. What could Apple have updated that might have accidently corrupted my Photoshop?? I don't really feel it could be anything else, but who knows... Does anyone have any ideas? I would hate to have to downgrade to OS 10.4 just to use my Photoshop and I certainly can't afford to shell out the extra $$ for CS3.
    I appreciate any light you guys can shed on the topic...
    Stan

    Actually the 10.5.2 update does seem to have improved things for me with Photoshop CS1. I can now actually type entries into the little boxes for things like crop and brush sizes. The File Browser is still prone to crashing the application though, and there is still some weirdness with opening files by a drag and drop onto the app icon in the Dock. But nothing got worse, and several annoyances disappeared.
    One thing to try is to create a brand new admin test user, with no additions (that includes not adding fonts), log into the new account and see if Photoshop will work there.
    And speaking of fonts, do you have Linotype's Font Explorer installed? If so, did you get the new updater for it? Some people who use Font Explorer were having a lot of problems after the 10.5.2 update, including Photoshop failure to launch, that were fixed with the Font Explorer update.

  • Indesign CS4/CS3 and Export to PDF problems

    Hello,
    I have been having problems with both Indesign CS3 and CS4 and exporting large documents to a PDF-file. Exporting halts with error messages like: "Failed to Export the PDF file" in CS4 or "Error encountered while reading JPEG image" in CS3.
    Problem can be corrected by simply closing InDesign and restarting it and opening the same file again. It appears that problem occurs more often the file is large. Any suggestions how to fix this problem?
    I'm using Vista 64-bit and have 8GB memory.

    Handling of missing links HAS changed, and in my opinion for the worse, but at the request of users, so that missing links no longer open the Links panel automatically or ask you to update on opening as they used to, though you should still receive a warning that the links are missing UNLESS YOU HAVE TURNED IT OFF IN YOUR PREFERENCES. It's on by default and you will find the option under the file handling section.
    The rationale is that many workflows do not require that links be intact to accomplish the current editing, and longer documents with hundreds of missing links used to take many minutes to open while ID searched, essentially costing those users lots of money.
    IF you have stored the links in the same directory as the .indd file, and IF you have moved the entire directory and IF you have enabled finding missing links when opening files, InDesign will find and update the locations for the links when the file is opened. If ID is unable to locate a link, because it is not in the current directory or a subfolder, you will see a warning message (in the past you would have had the option to browse for the missing files), and you must open the links panel if you wish to fix them manually.
    In my opinion this is a very acceptable situation, and a great benefit to all types of workflows. I need to know links are modified or missing, so I've left that enabled. Those who don't need to know are no longer bothered or delayed. I suggest you pay a visit to the preferences and make sure that missing/modified checks are enabled, and if you are still having problems then your links aren't stored in the same directory, and that has always been an issue in ID when things get moved.

  • Can I uninstall leopard and install tiger without problems?

    I'm considering purchasing a refurb iMac - I don't want an iMac mind you, but the Mac Pros are simply priced way over my head and I need a new computer!
    I can't get a straight answer from Apple about whether it will have Tiger or Leopard on it but because of Adobe's refusal to make CS2 compatible with Leopard, I must use Tiger.
    I've been told I can, if I must, uninstall Leopard and reinstall Tiger but I've also been told I'll end up with a host of problems doing that
    does anyone know if this will work or not?
    Apple is driving me crazy... no one will asnwer that question for me
    and why they don't have a mid-range Mac Pro is beyond me but what do I know?
    thank you

    Hi liliths!
    I look at the Apple Store refurbs list on a daily basis.
    The longer you wait, the higher the chances that you will receive an iMac that was produced following Oct 26, and was therefore released with Leopard as the MINIMUM version of OS X. Currently, I'd guess that there is VERY little (almost zero) chance of that - today - but more chance as each day passes.
    A refurb purchased now will have Tiger on DVD, and Tiger installed. The box will contain an upgrade disc that will install Leopard.
    As time goes on, Apple will start to receive Leopard Macs (Leopard on DVD, and installed, but no Tiger) produced after Oct 26 that get shipped back from the stores after buyers have returned them. Those returns to Apple, and Apple's refurbishment process, do not occur overnight. Those Leopard Macs will not be able to run Tiger, or if they will run it, it will not be supported by Apple (no phone support/no warranty until Leopard would be installed).
    Refer to this Apple Support article:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25497
    There are some (lower-priced) Mac Pros sold with the slower processor option, but they are seldom seen on the refurb list, and sell quickly when do appear. One would certainly sell within minutes of being placed on the list this close to the holidays. (A good alternative at a close price w/o sales tax: eBay 250194178376)
    There are others besides Apple selling the older production Macs and advertising that they have Tiger on them, not Leopard. (From a third party, I very recently purchased a Mac Pro NIB with Tiger only.) Those units will be available less and less as each day goes by. I have purchased a Leopard family pack for possible future use.
    Don't wait too long to make up your mind, or the choice will no longer be available for you:) A mid-priced Mac Pro might be one of the last G5s, so you might want to look at eBay item 120191603098 (I have no affiliation on either eBay item, just a bystander).

    As to the question iMac vs Mac Pro or G5 - do you already have a display for a tower? A big factor in the decision.

  • Snow Leopard and Grab-a-Window problems

    Hello, everyone... I hope you will be able to help. I have installed Snow Leopard, and now the Grab a Window feature in my Dashboard does not work. I've tried re-installing Snow Leopard without any luck. Any ideas? Even an alternate way to do a screenshot would help.

    I have a problem with grab after installing Snow Leopard. The latest version 1.5 wont grab a 'window', although 'selection & 'screen' work OK.
    Apple said it is probably corrupt data causing the conflict & would take forever to solve.
    So I copied Grab 1.4 from an previous backup disc I had & it works fine. Also Grab 1.3 also works OK.
    Hope this helps

  • I have been working on movies in iMovie but after downloading dropbox and exporting iMovies as large files I can no longer open up imovie on the computer.  If I download imovie again, will I have lost all my work ?

    Yesterday I was working in imovie.  I exported the files as both Quicktime movies and as large files which I then placed in a Dropbox account.  Subsequently, perhaps because the files were so large, I have been unable to open the imovie programme.  The menu appears but nothing else happens. If I download the software again will I loose all my previous work ?  Has anyone any suggestions ?
    Thanks.

  • Does iMovie support 4K video editing and export?

    Does the latest version of iMovie support 4K video export? I have seen that it supports XAVC-S from Sony, but I do not know if 4K XAVC-S is supported too.
    Thank you for answer.
    P.S.: If not, would it be able to in near future?

    Hi Tomas J
    the problem is that if you have nothing but 4k XAVC clips in the card and you try to import from the Import window
    FCPX will not see the card as a Camera and only as a Volume. You cannot do Camera archives from a volume but you are able to do Camera Archives if it is detected by FCPX as a Camera.  The reason I like to do Camera Archives is that that way I transfer the whole content of the SD card in one pass to a container that I can transfer to any HD that is hooked up or connected to the computer usually avoiding the main or boot drive and I can bring that container or Archive into the Favorites column of the import window pf FCPX ,opened and start importing from there. This has two main advantages 1 Once I create the archive and have all my clips in its container I can wipe the card clean and start using it again, 2 If I placed it in the Favorites colum of the import window I can open it and start importing to FCPX as if it was any card, Also you can move this container or archive any where as long as it is connected to your computer and if you have finished and don't plan to use it anymore you can store it for keeps with all the original files you shot in any storage for keeps. You also preserve the file structure of the SD card  That is why I need FCPX to recognize the SD card as a CAMERA AND NOT AS A VOLUME when using 4K XAVC-S clips.  The way you are doing it may be ok up to a point only for a few clips here and there but if you're preserving or making a Movie of you vacation or other events that would be an Immense task.
    The Sony AX-100 camera that you have has the same file structure that the AX-33 if you import nothing but 4K XAVC-S clips without mixing mp4 or AVCHD ON THE SAME CARD Have you found the same problem????
    Thank You,
    AppleLou

  • IMovie for iPad 2 - importing and exporting

    Hi all,
    I am a brand new iPad 2 user and am looking to edit my home videos using the iMovie iPad app.
    After a bit of research it seems there is a bit of discussion on the ability to add your own video files for iMovie to recognise the format for editing.
    I was just wondering if anyone with recent experience can share if it is possible to do this method without a whole heap of converting and transferring.
    Here are a couple of my other related questions:
    1. Import - how do you import video from a digital camera or video camera to your iPad?
    2. Export - once in iTunes how do I get it on my iMac for playback and sharing? i.e. create DVD, add to USB stick/flash drive.
    3. Export - what video file format does iMovie on the iPad 2 export to?
    4. Export - can I export the iMovie project file from the iPad 2 and then continue to work on it using my iMac?
    Many thanks

    1 - Imovie for iPad is made to work with video shot with an IOS device. You would have to make sure it's compatible
    2 - Export the movie to your camera roll. Connect to computer and import just like you would from any camera.
    3 - it exports an MOV file, h.264 encoding (720P)
    4 - Yes you can export a project and continue to work on it on the Mac, make sure you have the latest version.

  • QuickTime 7.5  and Exporting with the Animation Codec

    Since the QT upgrade to 7.5 I have a problem on my mac where the render fails and AE crashes.
    This is VERY similar to the problem I had with the 7.4 QT upgrade.
    I am using the Animation Codec and Millions of Colors + for the alpha channel.
    Has anyone else experienced this as well?

    I just modified my Memory and Cache preferences and got one to export without crashing.
    I decreased the maximum cache size down to 30%
    I also enabled Disk caching.
    Just to see if I got lucky I just rendered 3 more with no problems. Weird...
    Does anyone know why this may have occurred?

  • Installed Leopard and DVD Studio Pro Problems

    Just installed Leopard 10.5.6 Box Set and Compressor and DVD Studio Pro will not work properly.
    DVD Studio Pro 4 will open a past dvd and when go to burn it shuts down. I also cannot export out to compressor from FCP 5. I already tried the http://support.apple.com/kb/TA47672?viewlocale=en_US
    link and it didn't work for either. Any guidance would be appreciated!
    Thanks

    Just did an upgrade install. No erase and install which I'm sure is the best way. I just got off the phone with apple and also found this on apple's site.
    Issue or symptom
    Compressor/Apple Qmaster versions 2.3 and earlier and version 3.0 are not supported on Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard.
    Solution
    Compressor and Apple Qmaster 2.3.1 and later or version 3.0.1 or later are supported on Mac OS 10.5 Leopard. Use Software Update to ensure you have the latest updates.
    I couldn't do it even if I wanted to. Time to move on to Intel or FCP 2. Thanks for responding.

  • HP Photosmart C 4480, Snow Leopard and most recent driver problem?

    I have followed the posts regarding problems with various HP printers since the update to Snow Leopard. I removed all the HP software, went to http://support.apple.com/kb/HT 3669 and confirmed that my Photosmart Printer is included. I downloaded the drivers and installed them. I opened system preferences, deleted and then re-added my printer. The printer works and the scanner is not detected, I am connected to my iMAC via a USB port. It does not matter whether I go to System Preferences to printer and fax, use Preview or Image Capture, my scanner is not recognized and in none of these places is there an option to add a scanner. I have turned my printer/scanner off and on and I deleted and then re-added my printer without success as well. Despite all the comments to the contrary, the latest "updated" drivers are not working properly.
    Any cures or recommendations are highly appreciated.

  • Safari 3.x (Leopard) and Web Proxy Server Problems:

    I have a Squid proxy server running on Linux. Users web traffic is directed through it via WPAD server which hosts a simple PAC file. The PAC files is very clean and small. It basically points all external (Internet) web traffic to our Proxy server. All of our Windows, Linux and Tiger clients work fine. However, Leopard (Safari 3.x) doesn't work quite right. Here's what happens:
    Mac user logs into a Leopard 10.5 Mac. User launches Safari and tries to go to an external (Internet) site. The WPAD server is contacted and the Mac User is prompted to authenticate to the Proxy server. This is totally normal behavior thus far. Then, however, every few minutes the Leopard Mac user will be prompted to authenticate again (sometimes 2 or 3 times in a row!). Firefox 2.0.x, when configured to use the WPAD/PAC server and Proxy server, works fine in Leopard. Only Safari 3 in Leopard is having the problem.
    All the Macs (Tiger and Leopard) are configured to use the Proxy server via OS X's Network Pref Pane (using the "Automatic Proxy Configuaration"). Reminder: Tiger works fine (even with the Safari betas), but Leopard's doesnt not.
    I have attached our PAC file inline below (some things edited for privacy):
    // SIMR automatic configuration for Mozilla and friends
    // $Id: wpad.dat,v 1.8 2005/12/14 20:18:23 dct Exp $
    // Edit carefully, since many may be relying on this...
    function FindProxyForURL(url, host) {
    // Bypass the proxy for internal addresses
    if (!url.match("http:")
    || url.match("http://127.0.")
    || url.match("http://10.")
    || url.match("http://192.168.")
    || isPlainHostName(host)
    return "DIRECT";
    // These are exceptions given in the IE config for Windows.
    if (host == "www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov"
    || host == "chabry.caltech.edu"
    || host == "flybase.bio.indiana.edu"
    || host == "www.fedex.com"
    || host == "domain.org"
    return "DIRECT";
    return "PROXY <proxy server>:8080";
    }

    I think I have a similar problem. I am a Mac connecting to an otherwise all PC school network.
    A new location with all correct proxies has been set up. However, Safari always crashes on first attempt to negotiate its way through our server to the internet. Internet explorer gets through because in its preferences it is possible to include the name of the school domain as well as my user name and password.
    We have been unable to find any way of including the domain name into Location in Network or into Safari.
    However, once Internet Explorer has negotiated with the server I can launch Safari and it works as normal.
    Safari/Network seems to lack this option of including a domain name that my PC server requires.
    Make sense to anyone?
    Worth mentioning that my copy of Internet Explorer (5.2) often crashes, but usually it has done its job by then. I quite like the concept of Internet Explorer sacrificing itself to clear a path for Safari.

  • Mac Mini, Snow Leopard and 64bit ... problems.

    Hi,
    Hope you can help.
    My Mac Mini = 2Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4GB RAM. I assumed that Snow Leopard would run fully 64bit when I upgraded ... I guess I assumed wrong?
    I checked my Mac Mini using a 3rd party app and got these results:
    64 bit processor
    64 bit EFI
    64 bit kernel boot mode
    32 bit kernel
    ... why is it using the 32 bit kernel?
    I also checked the System Profiler and '64-bit kernel and extensions' is set to 'No'.
    I finally checked the 'extensions' in System Profiler and all except the following 8 extensions are 64-bit ready:
    System6.0
    Mach6.0
    Libkern6.0
    IOKit6.0
    CHUDUtils
    CHUDProf
    CHUDKernlib
    BSDKernel6.0
    Since upgrading I can honestly say I have not noticed any difference what-so-ever, this could be because I previously upgraded the RAM from 1GB to 4GB and got a nice speed boost from that.
    So to sum up, should I be able ro run 64-bit? And if not, and I'm stuck with 'virtual' 64-bit with no noticeable difference, why did I bother buying the upgrade?
    It was definately not made clear anywhere that I would have a reduced version with no noticeable difference in computing power nor added/upgraded apps, everything works precisely how it did before.
    :S

    Yes I've tried that seceral times in several different ways to try and force the 64-bit kernel to load ... no joy.
    I've also used a 3rd party app to try and force 64-bit after a reboot ... no joy.
    Have you got Snow Leopard installed and using it in 64-bit mode? And secondly have you seen any real benefit of upgrading? Honestly?
    I don't mean to be funny about it but all I seem to have got out of the update is a lighter wallet :/

  • Insert HTML and export to PDF problem (ID CS6)

    Greetings,
    A new feature in Indesign CS6 is to insert HTML snippets in an Indesign document via the Object > Insert HTML option.
    This will insert a frame in the page containing the rendered HTML content.
    There are several issues that I have encountered using this feature in Indesign CS6. Can anyone advise if these are bugs/ux issues and provide any alternatives/solutions.
    1) After inserting any HTML content (even the default "This is an HTML snippet"), when I try to export to PDF format (Interactive or Print), the  HTML content or rather its frame container is rendered in black. I've noticed that the HTML content is exported as a image so all I get are black rectangles.
    There is no problem when I try to export to HTML format.
    2) There seems to be a paste size limit in the Insert HTML text area/field as I can only paste 16566 characters of HTML code. (Haven't checked yet if the limit is in characters or tags or newlines).
    3) How can you set such that the HTML object frame will span multiple pages for cases where the HTML content is larger than the height of the page? Since it is not a text frame, I can't find a threading feature or a possible workaround. Or is the "Insert HTML" feature not really applicable for PDF export workflows but only for epubs?
    Thanks

    Oh ok. I guess direct HTML import is still not possible in ID CS6 (either import as XML or convert to DOC/RTF) for PDF export.
    Thanks

  • Just upgraded to Leopard and having general mail problems...

    Hi all. Thanks for any help you can give me in advance.
    I'm having multiple problems and I hope you guys can help. Has anyone had any general reliability issues? I understand that mail often can flicker or hang up, and restarting the program can be necessary. No big deal. But since I've upgraded, it happens constantly. I run multiple accounts, from multiple providers, and they are all having trouble. So I don't feel it is my provider. I'll list a couple problems to provide some examples.
    1) When I start Mail, a pop up comes up to make me verify each account server. I feel like I'm in Windows Vista with endless pop-up-warnings.
    2) More often than it used to with 10.4, when sending, the SMTP server will hiccup and I'll get the "try again later" warning. And I have to restart Mail to get it to send. This happens at least 10 times a day.
    3) Large attachments, 5 to 10 megs, often won't send if they don't get uploaded fast enough. My company doesn't have the fastest internet, and it can take time. This wasn't a problem with 10.4.
    Those are the biggies. Seems like it is just general unreliability. I have multiple accounts with multiple providers, so I'm led to believe that the problem is with Mail, not my providers.
    Thanks.

    I ran in to similar problems when I upgrade my wife's iMac to Leopard. The easiest way I found after about three hours of trying to solve the issue is to just download and reinstall iTunes. that whole process took ten minutes and iTunes is working as it should. You can get the latest version of iTunes here:
