Imovie hd to imovie update
wow i bought the ilife to get garageband 4. im getting through all the bugs to bring my gb3 files into the buggy new format and not complaining but after trying to use the new imovie program to set an audio track to video track i realized the software update nerfed the program rather than improved it. i cant even open or import half the file types i could before i paid a hundred bucks for a software upgrade. why does apple always retroscrew their customers? i went through this when they patched/nerfed the isights on new imacs so the recording quality became a joke. isnt there some software laws that forbid patching "down" software to remove quality of function? i mean especially after i gave em a hundred bucks to get improved software! if am i missing something please let me know cause this is unacceptable.
Hewy Ziatron, thank you for the Apple insight to iMovie '08, but not sure iMovie '08 was designed for internet quicktimes only. iMovie itself was designed to create movies in various amature and professional formats...which each of us chose to use for whatever reasons. Marketing two, almost completely different apps with the same name is, well, odd, for any company. Basically iMovie '06 does everything iMovie '08 does, and more, and does it to the frame precisely, (however the scrubbing in iMovie '08 is easier)...so why? Making iMovie '06 available to iMovie '08 users seems redundant and expensive to me. Seems that either Apple is making way for a newer easier version of FCP for us DVD creators / Editors, or there was a mix up somewhere. Me thinks the cost of iLife '08, with it's silly version of iMovie, even with what was added to iWeb, iPhoto and GB is too high. I truly hope there will be some significant free upgrades to clients of iLife '08.

PavelI don't understand why first update has almost 2GB and there is also second update which has around 300MB, so I can see two iMovie updates in App Store - Updates.

IMovie 9.0.8 update wont update
I have an update ready to install for iMovie, but each time i try its telling me to log into account that purchased it,im in that as i have only ever had 1 account ?
I am an IT professional, my home network logs in securely and the issue is not with the user logon, it is to do with the update of the software via app store.
Imovie software will not update via my wifes itunes account, nor via my itunes account. this was used to update to mountain lion. There are no other accounts available to try ? so why does itunes app state i need another account? -
I am attempting to update from iMovie 9 to iMovie 10. I have many movies with iMovie 9. Yet, on iMovie 10, when I press "update projects and events", it states "iMovie could not find any projects or events to update". Somehow it doesnt' see all the movies I have on iMovie 9 library. What do I do?
I'm dealing with this same issue. At one point, it did recognize the Update function but then said it could not import the cache.mov and plist files which apparently means that imovie 10 can't see any of these past events. I can't figure it out.

Imovie 10.0.3 update events from external HDD
All,
I need some help on updgrading to the new iMovie version. After waiting for some time I decided to use iMovie 10.0.3 instead of old iMovie 9.0.9 version on Mavericks since Apple fixed the sort by date feature.
I have one problem though. I have an external drive which is in NTFS format and I used that extensively with the old iMovie 9.0.9 to move my projects and events to free up space on my mac HDD.
When I started using iMovie 10.0.3 I did update projects and events and it updated all the events and projects on my MacBook's HDD and not external drive even though it was plugged in. One important thing was that when Mavericks first came out I let iMove do an auto update and I did not have the external HDD connected. I went back to old iMovie since I was dissapointed with the missing feature. To re-update events I deleted events from iMovie 10.0.3 library and deleted the updateToiMove10 file in the projects and even folder and let iMovie again search and update and build my library.
In OS X versions before mavericks I used the free NTFS-3G driver to access drive. In Mavericks I tried using the built in support and the driver too. But I don't think accessing the partition is a problem as I can create new libary in the external HDD just fine and iMovie 9.0.9 still sees it and works with it just fine.
Any idea on how I can get iMovie 10.0.3 to recognize there are old imovie events and projects on the external connected drive and upgrade them? Does it have to something with NTFS? Has anybody got it work before even with the mac filesystem? The iMovie help says that it should happen automatically ....
Thanks!Hello All,
Also no answer but am having the same problem. All my catalogueing via folders is up in smoke and no external HDs (where I would normally directly store raw footage when importing) showing up on the iMovie interface. It is a pain the arse to go back to the earlier version - why APPLE, pray tell, do you continue to lower expectations user-friendly functions. Shall try the option+open for a library but this too is extremely inconvenient if it works like iPhoto because you have to log out to log in to a new library whereas I just want to be able to see my multiple HDs directly from the iMovie menu and then the folders within folders I have layered in there - to make it easy to FIND STUFF. Wake up Apple, you are NOT meeting your customer's needs or desires.
Thanks to the posters who are helping the rest of us lost in the dark with possible solutions - free fix-its for Apple which they don't deserve. -
IMovie 7.1.2 update
Since I did not get an advice from the system "Software update", I have tried to install the iMovie 7.1.12 update from the Apple site and from the "Version Tracker" site.
Each time I get this message : "An eligible iMovie application was not found in the location /Applications."
I do have version 7.1.1 installed and it does open.
What should I do?
Thank youHi
Guess You mean 7.1.2
I would run (Apple Disk Util tool):
• Repair Permissions
• Repair Hard disk (You need to start from external hard disk or DVD)
and see if this helps.
Else
Not knowing the origin to Your problem - General approach when in trouble is as follows:
• Free space on internal (start-up) hard disk if it is less than 10Gb should rather have 25Gb
• Hard disk is untidy: Repair Permissions, Repair Hard disk (Apple Disc Util tool)
• Delete iMovie pref file - or rather start a new user/account - log into this and re-try
• Third party plug-ins that doesn't work OK (not relevant for iMovie’08)
• Program miss-match: iMovie 5.0.2, up to Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.4.1 - is OK
• Program miss-match: iMovie 6.0.3 or 6.0.4, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.4.1 - is OK (might work under Leopard)
• Program miss-match: iMovie’08 v. 7.0.1, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.4.1 - is OK (might work under Leopard)
iMovie pref file resides: Mac Hard Disk (start-up HD)/Users/"Your account"/Library/Preferences
and is named: com.apple.iMovie.plist
While iMovie is NOT RUNNING - move this file out to desk-top.
Now restart iMovie.

IMovie 10.0.4 updates x2?
Hi everyone
First time poster - 25 year Mac user
I've got the App Store on my Macbook Pro running 10.9.4 trying to install iMovie 10.0.4 update July 2 - when it actually installed 10.0.4 release from July 18 successfully afterwards … so any ideas how to stop it downloading / installing the older one?
CheersHello Alezoodi105,
You may need to update your iMovie events and projects, as detailed in the article linked below.

imovie and iphoto wont update because it says i need to sign into the account i used to purchase them, but they were already on my mac when i bought it, what should i do?
This is usually caused by some error with the AppStore receipt used to track your purchases. There are numerous reports of similar problems online. The best solution I've seen (that fixed my issue) is to delete the _MASReceipt directory from your copy of iTunes. This breaks the account lock and allows the app to update.
First make a backup copy of your app (just in case), then Ctrl-click on the icon in the Finder and choose 'Show Package Contents.
From there navigate to the Contents directory, in which you'll see a _MASReceipts directory. Delete this directory (you may need to authenticate to do this).
Once you've done that, relaunch the App Store and check for updates. With luck the update will work now. -
Dear community, what to do when iMovie does not automatically updates video from my iPhoto. Usually it will automatically generate new content, but now it's stuck 3 days behind the latest new iPhoto entries... I've restarted all programs, restarted the computer... what else?
Ezy,
I'm not sure what recourse you really have. My expectation would be that Apple is on the hook to warranty your computer, but they only warrant the machine you've got.
The issue of exchange is fully in the hands of the dealer. If it were Apple, they would likely have had a longer return/exchange period (2 weeks is standard in the US, and I think they use the same timeframe internationally), and there have been some reports of people getting machines exchanged even if they were just outside the 2-week period.
However, with Apple dealers, I think they are a little more concerned about old inventory. Who knows what Apple does when you give them back a last-gen Macbook. They probably sell it at a markdown, but even marked down, they still get a profit (most likely). When an authorized reseller gets stuck with an old machine, they probably have to sell it at a loss. Thus, I would expect resellers to be more afraid of holding onto discontinued models.
That said, if they do a lot of business, they should appreciate the value of customer loyalty: it's usually better to lose money on one purchase than lose a customer (and all their future purchases). If you're a regular customer there, you could point out that disappointment could cause you to go to a competitor. That's playing a bit of hardball though.
However, there is maybe an upshot to all of this... The new 13" model did not get the quad-core CPU's.. And it lost its dedicated graphics adapter. I've seen a decent number of people complaining that the new 13" model is worse than the previous one (the one I'm assuming you've gotten). So it might not be such a bad thing after all. -
IMovie App Crashes after Update on my iPhone
I recently received an update for the iMovie app. I updated the app and the icon looks a bit awkward. When I launched it to check out the feature, it suddenly crashed and took me back to the home screen. I uninstalled and reinstalled the app and no luck. Continues to do the same. When I double-tap the Home button my phone, it shows the iMovie active. When I select it, it crashes again. So I was searching for the app on the iTunes Store and somehow it doesn't appear anywhere. Apple - what's going on? I love this app a lot and I don't want to lose this. Please help us and fix this situation.
The app finally came back to the App Store this morning and I was able to re-download. I installed it on my iPhone and it works now. It didn't crash or glitch as it did yesterday. I'm a happy camper now. I can edit a few movie clips (from my camera roll) and put them together to upload to YouTube. Woo-hoo!! :)

IMovie 4 to iMovie HD and back again
I have read countless threads on issues related to choppy video in iMovieHD, but I haven't yet discovered a solution to my situation. I'm also dizzy with all the options, iMovie 4 vs iMovie HD, QT 7 vs QT 6.5.2, QT Cache Size, etc...
In years past, I have used iMovie 4 successfully on a number of big projects. These movies were usually from 60 to 90 minutes, with tons of video clips, audio clips, stills, transitions and effects. I never had a problem. This is work repeating. I never had a problem.
Then enter stage iMovie HD, and Quicktime 7. Neither seemed to have new features that I needed, but I figured, what the heck, maybe it improves performance. This is where my nightmare begins. I honestly do not know which software it the culprit, but I was in the middle of one of the most important video projects yet (and one of the biggest). Perhaps I deserve my fate since I didn't save the iMovie 4 project file, but I'm hoping some of you will be forgiving. Yes, I converted my iMovie 4 project to iMovie HD, and did not save the old project file. I didn't notice (or don't remember noticing) at first, so maybe the problem didn't start until I upgraded to QT 7. But at some point in time, I noticed a big problem in my project. I would start playing the movie to see how things were coming together, and my video would just freeze at arbitrary points (after a minute or so of playing okay). It starts getting choppy first, then the frame just freezes. The playhead continues to movie, and choppy audio is heard, but the video just seems to die.
I wiped the drive, and reinstalled iLife 04. I'm running OS X 10.3.9, and software update updated me to Quicktime 7 again. So I have a number of questions, all hopefully leading to resolution of this issue. I've lost weeks of time on this project, and I need to get it back on track.
1. I have the iMovie HD project, but I want to work on it in iMovie 4 instead (had better luck with iMovie 4). Is there any way to mod the iMovie HD project file, or any utility, so that I can open it with iMovie 4 (and have all my clips and transitions, etc., restored)?
2. Was downgrading from iMovie HD to iMovie 4 the wrong solution completely? Is the culprit really Quicktime 7?
3. Does the latest Quicktime resolve this issue? I'm trying to decide whether I should upgrade to iMovie HD again. I really don't know what to do at this point. There's so much at stake, but lately my productivity has been zero, so something has to happen.
I guess I'm looking for a direction to go, and I currently feel very lost. Reading the past threads made me dizzy. I just want things to be the way they were: working. Can someone push me in the right direction? Now I know how you equated donmerlin with Bill... I got so flustered with this problem, I ended up forgetting which Apple ID I posted under. Here is an update to the problem.
I really wanted to stay with QT 7.0.3 because the latest DVD Studio Pro requires it (as does iTunes for video playing). I tried to stay with QT 7 and revert back to iMovie 4, but because the old iMovie 4 project file was converted to iMovie HD (and there's not way to go back), I basically had to recreate the iMovie project from scratch. I started to do this, by first creating a new iMovie 4 project, then copying all of the 100's of media files from the other project into this one. Once I realized the magnitude of work involved, figuring out what's what, and which clips are transitions and effects, I knew this was a bad way to go. And chances are, it would have still been a problem, since most of what I've read has to do with QT 7 being the problem. So I changed directions.
I am fortunate enough to have two G4's, so I left QT 7.0.3 on this one, and decided to downgrade QT on my other G4. First I ran the QT 7.0.1 Reinstaller (had to use Pacifist, since the Apple installer refused to let it run). Then I ran the QT 6.5.2 Reinstaller. After that, I opened up the iMovie HD project, and lo and behold, the freezing and staggering playback issues were gone! Words cannot express the feeling of relief I had. In retrospect, I am still quite disappointed that Apple introduced an upgrade to QT that caused this horrible problem, and appears to have done nothing to resolve it. The good news is that I found my way around the problem via the QT downgrade path, and I'll never upgrade QT on this other G4 again. Thanks to everyone in sharing in my grief and posting suggestions (both in response to my post and others). -
IMovie hung reading iMovie Library.imovielibrary
This is probably the first time I've tried to open iMovie at least since upgrading to Yosemite - maybe longer. iMovie has been hung for hours now saying "Reading "iMovie Library.imovielibrary" library. I can't do anything with iMovie. I can't even quit it though I suppose I could do a force quit but I haven't tried that yet, hoping that at some point it would finally finish whatever it is doing. After 5-6 hours, I have given up on that hope. Does anyone have any suggestions?
Thanks.Hi brucerpeterson,
If you have upgraded iMove as well as Yosemite, it may be trying to read/update an old iMovie library. If that is the case and the update appears to be hanging, and/or the library in question is not one you need to keep, you may find the following articles helpful:

Hi there,
I know how to move a project from one Mac to another if they both have iMovie 2013, but i need to move a project from iMovie 2013 on my computer to another computer that has iMovie '11. Is there a way to do this?
Thank You in advance,
AdamNo. You can update a project from iMovie '11 to iMovie '13 but not the reverse.

Is it worth moving from iMovie 4 to iMovie 6?
I'm using iMovie 4, but I have heard that iMovie 6 is now a free download from the Apple website.
What features would I gain if I moved up from iMovie 4 to 6? Would it really be worth it? iMovie 4 seems to be working all right for me at the moment.
Would iMovie 6 have any problems opening my previous iMovie 4 projects?
TomOK, I downloaded iMovie 6 from the Apple website and installed it, after first giving iMovie 4 a different name (I renamed it, oddly enough "iMovie 4" instead of simply "iMovie." Now I have on my Dock both "iMovie HD" and "iMovie 4," although since their icons are exactly alike, I will have to choose the one I want carefully).
I confirmed the correctness of your information (thanks) that iMovie 6 can open iMovie 4 projects, but not vice-versa (I don't know why you'd ever want to do vice-versa anyway), and I see that when iMovie 6 opens up an iMovie 4 project, it updates it so that iMovie 4 cannot ever open it again (and once again, I don't see any reason why you'd ever want to do that anyway). To check this out, I opened up an old iMovie 4 project that I didn't care about anymore with iMovie 6, and it is now an iMovie 6 project, and it seems to work fine. All new projects from now on will be in iMovie 6.
I also like the idea that iMovie 6 doesn't have that project-corrupting trash-emptying bug that so many people have reported, and although that bug never bit me before, there is always a first time, and I am sure that it was only biding its time, waiting for an important project to corrupt.
Now I just have to play around with iMovie 6 to figure out the differences and new features, or go buy a book on it somewhere. Right off I notice that you can no longer launch iDVD from within the iMovie project window--apparently that's now up under the Share menu, yes? Once I get things like that figured out, I'll be good to go in 6.
I have Final Cut Express for really important video projects, but iMovie has always been great for creating quick little family videos like birthdays and things where I don't want to get involved with all the complex FCE windows and controls. Also, FCE puts render files and things in folders all over the hard drives, which is rather a messy nuisance, whereas all of iMovie's files are kept inside its single project folder--very tidy and accessible. Also, for convenience I can import entire Mini-DV videotape sequences into iMovie and afterward cull out the unwanted video (throw it into iMovie's trash can) and then flush all those unwanted video edits right off the hard drive to regain space (FCE can't do that; it never gets rid of anything, so if you want to save space while importing into FCE you have to carefully evaluate each scene on the tape and only import exactly what you want, which is time-consuming). After doing basic editing in iMovie, I can export the video as a QuickTime movie to drop into FCE, if I want to create a more sophisticated video project than iMovie is capable of.
So, iMovie and Final Cut Express are complementary programs for me, each having its own strengths and uses, and I am happy that I now have the advantages of iMovie 6, with its improved features and reliability, and especially its ability to open multiple projects and cut and paste between them.
So, the switch from iMovie 4 to 6 was successful and worth it to me, and thanks again for the advice and information, everyone!

How to copy project from iMovie 11 to iMovie 10?
I get confused on iMovie naming, so let me start with this: I have projects and clips in the old version of iMovie, iMovie 11. When I click on iMovie > About iMovie, it shows the version as 9.0.9. I will refer to this as iMovie 9.
I also have the projects and clips in the newer version of iMovie. When I click on iMovie > About iMovie, it shows the version as 10.0.3. I will refer to this as iMovie 10.
I want to copy a project (the set of video clips. audio clips, titles and transitions) from iMovie 9 to iMovie 10. Can someone explain how to do this?
With the recent update of iMovie 10, a number of my projects now appear as "Missing File". They appear to have been corrupted or lost in the upgrade. i still have the original projects in iMovie 9, but do not know how to copy them over to iMovie 10.
I do not want to do a mass replacement of projects in iMovie 9 to iMovie 10, as some of the projects in iMoive 10 have been edited with newer content. I want transfer selected projects form iMovie 9 to iMovie 10.
Any help is appreciated ...pomme4moi wrote:

iMovie '11 (as in 2011) is version 9. The new version iMovie is version 10. Yoou see it sometimes refferred to by Apple as iMovie (2013).

Projects and Events cannot simply be copied from version 9 to 10, the files themselves must be updated. Unfortuantely, Apple only offers an all or nothing method for doing the updating as described here:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT6012?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
iMovie 10 will only update the contents of the iMovie Projects an iMovie Events Folders used by iMovie 9. So you could get an external hard drive and use iMovie 9 to move all the Projects and Events that you don't want to update to version 10 to the external.
http://support.apple.com/kb/ph2289
Disconnect the external drive and run the updating from iMovie 10.
However, it may be just as easy to update everything and then delete any Projects or Events you don't want in iMovie version 10.
