IMovie HD6, difference in format choices

When starting a new project, I have read that I should choose a HD format in order to retain the original sharpness of imported digital images. What is the difference in quality between the formats HDV 720p and HDV1080i?
Also, I notice that when I add a Ken Burns effect, the image becomes sharper and brighter. Why is that?
Thank you for your help.

Your suggestion was fantastic. Thank you.
My problem was sort of the inversion. I wanted to import some clips that are 16:9, (640x272 to be specific). But of course, iMovie then displays them with black borders on top and bottom.
What really mysiyfied me was, I used QT pro to change the properties [scaled size 640x272 to 640x480, unchecking preserve aspect ratio] Then, on saving as a self contained movie, slightly different name, it appeared to have worked. The new QT movie played as 4:3 with no distortion and audio intact. I was delighted. Then I imported it into my iMovie project and...it came in as 16:9. I'm still stumped by this but no matter because I tried your suggestion - opening the Package Contents and dragging my clip into the Media folder -and that newly saved 4:3 version plays perfectlly along with existing clips on my iMovie timeline - as 4:3.
*I can't figure out Anamorphicizer. I downloaded both Anamorphicizer.app and Inverse-Anamorphicizer. I followed the link to the tutorial on it. All it does is some fast visual stuff and create a new file that is exactly the same as the one I tried to change. I tried it all kinds of ways but cannot figure out what it is doing or how to get it to do what I want.
*Someone else wrote - you can do what Anamorphicizer does in QT Pro. But no explanation as to how.
*I also found that MPEG Streamclip can do the conversion.
Bottom line, your suggestion is best. Thanks

  • What about Problem JVC Full HD Camcorder GZ-HD7E and iMovie HD6 ?

I want purchase Full HD Camcorder JVC GZ-HD7E .
What do you mean about "Problem - Not Problem" by use with
    iMovie HD6 ? (PPC G5, 10.4.9 and or iMac G5, 10.4.9)
    Thanks .

Most digital video is compressed to save space, generally using lossy video compression codecs. That means that when you go through a compress/uncompress cycle, you don't exactly get the same thing. How bad it is depends on the compression algorithm and the bitrate you choose. If the bitrate is high enough, the compression artifacts might be tolerable. MPEG-2 has a little bit of a bad rap because early MPEG-2 encoders weren't very good, and MPEG-2 can look bad if you choose a bitrate that is too low. Scenese with lots of movement, or low-light scenes with lots of video noise are particulary challenging to compress with good results.
Problems get worse when you have to re-compress, because then you apply a lossy algorithm on top of video material that already has artifacts. It's like making a copy of a copy with a not-so-perfect copy machine. So yes, there is some quality loss when you re-encode the MPEG-2 video for editing. But the loss at that point is minimal, because you are encoding to a very high quality codec. It doesn't make the video any better, but it doesn't make it any worse than it already is. The real quality loss occured earlier, when the video was recorded, and the initial MPEG-2 encoding was performed. Whatever detail was lost there, and whatever artifacts where introduced at that point, cannot be recovered later.
It all comes down to: what do you consider acceptable? Compare it to music. Yes, a CD is of much higher quality than a MP3 song. But most people can't tell the difference, and are just fine with MP3.
With HD, you don't really have a choice. The Canon HV20 - like all MiniDV based HD camcorders - uses MPEG-2 compression, too. It only shares the tape media and Firewire connection with SD MiniDV camcorders, not the DV compression algorithm. Importing from the HV20 into iMovie goes through the same re-encoding process. The AVCHD camcorders use MPEG-4 compression.

  • Imovie HD6.0.3 won't see my new Sony HDR-CX11E USB connected camcorder

Despite spending 4 hours now and wanting to shoot myself in the face. My brand new Sony HDR-CX11E is not being recognised by Imovie HD 6.0.3.
I have followed the instructions to the letter about a hundred times now. I'm using a Intel Core Duo imac, when I plug in the USB cable the memory stick is showing on the desktop, but when I open Imovie.... nothing, No Camera Attached. I have tried opening imovie with every available option tagged, DV, DV Wide, HDV 1080, HDV 720, Mpeg4 but every time it just fails to see the camcorder.
I read in one of my thousand searches on the subject that you first need to delete any Mpeg2 content from the camera, but I only bought it today and can't find any to delete, I even reformatted the stick to no avail.
    PLEASE help !!!!!

iMovie HD6 requires a miniDV camcorder to capture video via Firewire. It will not work with any other format of camcorder, like yours, that only has USB.
If you still want to stay with HD6, and who wouldn't, as it is still the best non pro editing platform there is, you should return that cam for a Sony miniDV model.
Otherwise, you will need to get iLife 09.

  • IMovie for Mac: "iMovie cannot open files in the "iMovie for iOS Project" format."

    Question, asked professionally
When will iMovie for Mac be able to open iMovie for iOS projects?
    Question, asked snarkily
Any reasonable expectation that we will ever be able to edit projects--created in iMovie on our fancy new expensive phones--in iMovie on our fancy new expensive laptops?

    Error Messages
iMovie for Mac: "iMovie cannot open files in the "iMovie for iOS Project" format."
iMovie for iOS: "An error occurred during export."
    Frustration
Manufacturer: Apple (a multibillion dollar company)
    The year: 2015
    Hours lost: Three Weeks
Total costs for both devices: $4,000
    Background Details
I just wasted thousands of dollars on these two hardware devices by making the rookie mistake of assuming projects were compatible across iMovie applications. However, the exported .iMovieMobile project files are in an incompatible iMovie for iOS Project format that iMovie for Mac cannot import. So I am stuck with a 15 GB .iMovieMobile project file--for an hour-long+ video--that I created and I was editing on my iPhone for weeks that I can no longer edit on my iPhone due to an error, nor potentially rescue the lost hours on my Mac, the sole reason I purchased it one day ago. The reason I can no longer edit the project on the iPhone is because iMovie for iOS suddenly stopped displaying the video of the project in preview, external display, etc. The clip snapshots remain visible and the audio remains audible, but the video appears fully black. Any attempt to export the video at any resolution generates an error message. (This error applies only to this project; other projects export without issue.) I can save to and from iTunes or iCloud without issue, but import into iMovie for Mac is unavailable for this latest version. Deleting and reinstalling the app does not resolve the issue. Nothing has resolved this issue; so I purchased the Mac as a last attempt, and it appears that I will have to begin the meticulously painful process of recreating the video from scratch with all the titling, sound effects, precise edits, transitions, organization, etc. This video was to surprise my mother for her birthday with "this is your life" footage, including my late father. It may seem like a small first-world problem, but such things carry big emotional impacts. What began as such a wonderfully intuitive and joyful experience has descended into a soul-suffering nightmare of catastrophic proportions. This software grinch stole christmas.
    Likely Suspect
I believe this originated from Apple's confusingly designed iTunes client that removed videos used by iMovie for IOS during a sync, which I successfully restored back to the iPhone. This apparently resulted in iOS seeking and then claiming to find all of the videos, but somehow a bug in the coding causes the audio to play but not display video, and no way to resolve the bug from an enduser standpoint. I was hoping that iMovie for Mac would allow me a workaround, but I'll never know because the iOS and Mac formats are currently and dishearteningly incompatible.
    Suggestions
I never performed a full backup of the iPhone, but I don't believe any of the iCloud nor local backups actually backup iMovie projects themselves anyway. (That's a fail.) So one must back them up manually to iTunes or iCloud.
MANUALLY BACKUP YOUR PROJECTS DAILY, IF NOT HOURLY.
MANUALLY BACKUP YOUR PROJECTS BEFORE IMPORTING OR SYNCING FROM ITUNES.
MANUALLY BACKUP YOUR PROJECTS BEFORE IMPORTING VIDEO CREATED OUTSIDE  OF YOUR IOS DEVICE.
    Resolutions
Hope Apple fixes this problem soon? Perhaps.
Return the Mac to Apple, if they allow? Perhaps.
Someone in this community will provide a magical workaround--that I haven't already attempted? Perhaps.
As unlikely these options may be, I shudder to imagine that I may be forced to suffer no resolution and $3,000+ completely down the drain, because if iMovie for IOS worked as intended, I wouldn't have ever purchased the Mac as a last ditch effort to rescue the project. It meant that much to me to surprise my mother by attempting to retrieve this project file from oblivion--but to no avail.

I appreciate you taking the time to copy and paste boilerplate responses to increase your points in this forum, but I've already read all those support articles in depth; but you have barely read my post at all. Please don't guess a fix. Only someone with the latest versions of iMovie, iOS, iPhone, Yosemite, and MacBook Pro is qualified to troubleshoot this, because anyone would immediately see that the following option no longer exists:
Open iMovie on your Mac, and choose File > Import > iMovie for iOS Project.
Read my post before you reply: It clearly says in the title and within my post that I can neither export nor import through iTunes without receiving an error message. So your response neither solved my question nor helped me whatsoever.

  • Error -50 while exporting from iMovie 08 in different formats...3gp is OK !

Also I got problems at Eye TV - export. If I choose the "iPod"-Export-Settings, the exportet file will not be played in quicktime. Maybe there are some Quicktime problems? I use the latest updates for all.....
many thanks for your help in advance!!!!

If you are exporting from EyeTV in order to be edited in iMovie 08, the best format is .dv.

  • IMovie HD6 Ken Burns Effect Not working

Hi. I've been using iMovie HD6 with my old iMacG4. We used Ken Burns Effect a lot with no problems.
I just got a 1 year old G5 iMAC with Intel Dual Processor and it has the latest versions of Tiger and iMovie 06. Everything works but the Ken Burns Effect. When I use the Ken Burns effect, it shows up when I set it up but when I push the button to make iMovie render the effect, the clinic does not render. It looks like the computer is about to render the effect but nothing happens and I need to force quit iMovie to do anything else. On the set-up of the Ken Burns effect, the preview shows the Ken Burns effect working.
I had a previous version of iLife O6 so I tried deleting the iMovie from the application and reloading the iLife 06 but this did not help. Because I don't have iLife 08, I cannot download a version of iMovie O6 to give this a try.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks for your help, Andy

Since you just got a one year old computer, I would do the following:
    1. Close iMovie and trash the file com.apple.iMovie.plist located in User/Library/Preferences. iMovie will create a new .plist file on relaunch.
    2. Before you relaunch iMovie, do a permissions repair using the Disk Utility app on your Mac.
    3. Make sure that you have sufficient free disk space for iMovie to operate efficiently -- 25GB is recommended.
    4. Update iMovie and Quicktime to current versions, and do a permissions repair afterwards.
    5. If you have any 3rd party plug-ins, or Quicktime plug-ins, move them to another folder to temporarily disable them.
With the Ken Burns effect, do not empty the trash until your project is finished. Emptying the trash will cause you to be unable to edit a photo to which the Ken Burns effect has been applied.
    Hope the above helps.

  • What are the differences in format options available for partition?

what is the differences in format options available for partition?

Select the drive in Disk Utility, click on the Erase or Partition tab, select the Format type: dropdown menu that will list your format options. For OS X the only option you should use is Mac OS Extended, Journaled. This is the standard format for OS X drives.
Then there are options for Windows - MSDOS (standard FAT format) or ExFAT (an advanced FAT system with most of the characteristics of NTFS.) OS X can read and write with either filesystem. NTFS is only readable, not writeable, by OS X.

  • Trouble opening iMovie HD6 projects on iMovie 08.

    Hi there,
I have just bought a new iMac, with iMovie 08. I have all my prior projects, created in iMovie HD6 stored on a LaCie external drive. The projects read and open on my laptop (running iMovie 06), but show blank files when plugged into the new iMac. How do I get them to open on both?

iMovie 08 cannot 'read' all of iMovie HD6's transitions/effects and will show blank files if you try to open version 6 movies with iMovie 08. You can download a free version of iMovie 6... version 6.0.4. This is the same as version 6.0.3, but it is only available to those of us who purchased new Macs that have iLife 08 preinstalled. The reason for this is for exactly what you are finding. You still need iMovie 6 to open your older projects and probably for creating new ones. Both versions of iMovie can coexist on the same computer......
Just tried looking for 6.0.4 and cannot find it...Maybe it is in the iLife updater released today. Will check and let you know.

  • Fadeouts becoming nonfunctional in iMovie HD6

Maybe someone has covered this in the 741 pp. If so, apologies. Using iMovie HD6 in Leopard. I drag fadeout transitions to the ends of my video clips. Hit Update. Hit Save Project. Fadeouts work. Add more fadeouts down the line. Then the first ones don't work anymore. I try Select Similar Clips, hit Add (which does not otherwise highlight, incidentally). Works for all clips. Later I go back and try the series. Fadeout clips still present in Timeline but don't fade. Am I missing something here? FWIW, I am following the fadeout clips with black clips.

    Hello, Kevin,
I have had something like this happen with some of my cross-dissolve transitions if they are between a movie clip and a still photo. The audio from some part of the movie clip will be incorporated into the transition. It does not occur between two movie clips or between two photos. I don't know if it happens with fade-out because I have not used it that much.
Unfortunately, I have not found a permanent solution that prevents this from happening, but here is a way to eliminate the sound. Mute the transition to make it silent.
I then add my background music or other audio if I want sound during the transition.
Choose to put your movie in the Timeline view, not Clips view. Then select 'Show clip volume levels' to see the audio volume in the transition. You may have to move the slider to the right to enlarge the transition enough to see the volume line. Just drag the volume line down to the bottom of the transition clip to silence it. Be sure to grab the little purple box at the beginning and drag it completely down, or you will still hear a little pop of noise when the transition starts.

  • Lennart's titles in iMovie HD6?Snow Leopard

Just loaded my iMovie HD6 onto the new Mac (Snow Leopard) and was happy to find that Gee Three has made their Slik software upgradeable for all their plug ins to work with the updated version of Quicktime.
I was also hoping to have Lennart Thelander's title upgrades, that he had generously provided free back in 2006, when I first used them. I found a newer website (his?) that had a link to the title file, but on download, my Mac immediately dumped it into the trash.
Are these LT titles not available/usable on newer Macs?
    Thanks,  Forest

Yes, if you had any GeeThree plug ins, they would not work if you updated your QuickTime to 7.3.1 or higher, because Apple removed Flash support in that version.
As I said, Gee Three addressed this some time in the intervening years and if you still have your registration code, or other info that will help them find it, you can get the updated download that will work with newer QuickTime versions. They are up and running on my HD6 on the new Mac now.
Still hoping to have the LT titles back also though.

    1) The people responding in this forum are just other Apple product users like you, not Apple itself.  Apple Support Communities is primarily an end-user to end-user (i.e., users like you helping other users) technical issue support feature. Feedback will truly get more attention if you send it using:
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/itunesapp.html
    2)  At some stage developers decide it isn't worth the expense of supporting older technology. If I had my way you could still connect iOS7 to OS9, but Apple has decided to make the limit OS 10.6.8  Nor do I like that I can't get spare parts for my 33 year old car...
    Suggestions...
If you are not going to always be running the newest technology always read software requirements before doing any upgrades.  I run a 12 year old computer and yes, I see there are things I can't run (many), but I also then avoid buying any incompatible new technology.  The system requirements are printed on the side of the box (albeit in 9 point medium gray font on light gray box   )  Do not expect the Apple Store people to check with you about your computer first.  I bet half of them were still in grade school when my computer was produced and none of them could possibly imagine anybody would run anything older than 6 years (probably not even that, more like 4).
Why not buy Snow Leopard?  Of course you do not say what model computer you are using, but if you can run Snow Leopard on your computer there's no advantage to staying with Leopard.  Snow Leopard costs $20 which is minimal compared to you now no longer being able to sync your phone.

I'd swear I posted almost this identical post two hours ago...
If you can't/don't want to upgrade your computer, you have 30 days to return the phone I believe.

what I've read here and on some other boards: No.

(I can not try my own on my setup)
    I would try:
re-name on the new Mac the iMovie app to.. like, iMovie_new (single click app, both keys apple-i, change name, return.. )
then insert the installer disks, choose a custom install of iMovie
IF it does work, re-name iMHD6 to something like iMHD_old and re-name iMovie_new back to iMovie09..

  • Can't project iMovie HD6 with mirroring off

MBP 10.5.4, model 3.1, NVIDIA GeForce 8600m GT
I want to project my HD6 iMovie HDV project via a 1080p 1920 x 1080 projector, with mirroring option set to off, so as to get full HD resolution on the screen.
I have tried all possibilities offered by Display preferences, F7 key etc... but to no avail; I can only project with the mirroring option set to ON.
Has anyone out there experienced the same problem ?
    Tks

PS I can project my FotoMagico slides show with full resolution and mirroring set to off, but can't do it with iMovie HD6.

Thank you, but it's a "no go".
Could you pls be a little more specific ? I don't know what you mean by the "menu bar icon" for instance.
When I click onto "Arrangement" on the External Display panel, I see two little blue screens apparently on the top of each other, but I can't separate them and draging my iMovie icon over such blue screen, does not do anything ie it rejects it.
I understand that some MBP have had a problem with the F7 function. Mine was bought in late 2007.
