IMovie hung reading iMovie Library.imovielibrary

This is probably the first time I've tried to open iMovie at least since upgrading to Yosemite - maybe longer. iMovie has been hung for hours now saying "Reading "iMovie Library.imovielibrary" library. I can't do anything with iMovie. I can't even quit it though I suppose I could do a force quit but I haven't tried that yet, hoping that at some point it would finally finish whatever it is doing. After 5-6 hours, I have given up on that hope. Does anyone have any suggestions?
Thanks.

Hi brucerpeterson,
If you have upgraded iMove as well as Yosemite, it may be trying to read/update an old iMovie library. If that is the case and the update appears to be hanging, and/or the library in question is not one you need to keep, you may find the following articles helpful:

  • File iMovie Library.imovielibrary is larger than possible for the drive it's on.

I've use iMovie '09 for a while and just switched to 10.0.2.  The system created iMovie Library.imovielibrary on the attached drive I use for video files.  This file is huge, in fact it should not fit on the drive it's on.  That is, the space available before it was created has around 100Gb and the file size shown in finder is over 300Gb.  What's going on?

It will create a new copy of all the files on the other drive because hard links only work within a single drive (partition).  To establish the hard links on the new drive you would have to copy the iMovie 9 folders then update them again in iMovie10 into a library on the new drive (after removing an empty file called something like "Updated to iMovie 10" from the projects and events folders that are put there by iMovie 10 to prevent updating twice.)

  • TS4213 Why can't iPhoto, Pages, Numbers, Keynote and iMovie access my iTunes Library files and Pages, Numbers, Keynote and iMovie access my iPhoto Library files now that I upgraded to '11?

Why can't iPhoto, Pages, Numbers, Keynote and iMovie access my iTunes Library files and Pages, Numbers, Keynote and iMovie access my iPhoto Library files now that I upgraded to '11?
Examples of what is going on:
    1. In Pages, Numbers & Keynote, when I go to the media browser the Audio section reads "Open iTunes to populate this list" even after iTunes has been opened, .xml file has been replaced/repaired, etc  AND Photo section reads "Open iPhoto to see photos from your iPhoto Library in this list" even after iPhoto Library has been replaced and new default library created.
    2. In iMovie, similar thing ... when I go to add photos or music to a movie the iTunes files aren't present and the iPhoto photos are missing with similar messages as in #1.
    3. In iPhoto, similar thing ... when I go to add music to a slideshow it says to "Open iTunes to populate this list".
It is shocking to me that Apple would let something as simple as a pathway link to associated library files get this messed up on an upgrade, but what's even more surprising is that with the number of people who seem to be having this particular issue (and I can tell from all the research that I've done for weeks online that there are a lot of them) that there doesn't seem to be a single clear answer to fixing it anywhere on these community support forums.  Most of what I've seen is rehashed advice from outdated issues.  What I need is a simple answer to how do we get these programs to look for the correct location of the photo and music files because I sure can't seem to find any logical place to do that through the programs' preferences files or the system preferences window?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    P.S. Here's the details on the software/hardware:
    MacBook Pro
    Mac OS X
    Version 10.7.5
2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    8 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
    iTunes 11.0.4 (4)
    iPhoto '11 9.4.3 (720.91)
    iMovie '11 9.0.9 (1795)
    Keynote '09 5.3 (1170)
    Pages '09 4.3 (1048)
    Numbers '09 2.3 (554)

I have the same problem on a new MacBook Pro. I have not been able to access the iTunes library from iPhoto since I got this computer. I looked in the Preferences file and deleted the com.apple.iApps.plist but there was no com.apple.iApps.lockfile so I just deleted the iAPPs.plist and rebooted the computer.  Still no iTunes available in iPhoto.
All my music is in iTunes and plays. After reading the above I brought up Pages and I was able to access music and insert a track into a document.
    Do you have any suggestions.

  • How do I transfer all tunes(only some appear in the imovie 11 itunes library) in my itunes library into the new iMovie itunes library? How do I restore all the music (not all added from imovie 9) play in my videos transferred from imovie 9 into iMovie 11?

How do I recover the many imovie 9 projects that did not transfer from imovie 9 into imovie 11? How do I make all of my  itunes library accessible to the itunes library in imovie 11. How do I recover those music audio tracks lost in the transfer from  imovie 9 projects  into imovie 11? How do I add music from my itunes library into imovie 11 projects. Some do and others cannot.

for purchases from the iTunes store do this:
connect your device and right-click or control-click it in the iTunes Source list, then choose transfer purchases from the shortcut menu that appears.

  • Migrate the whole iMovie 10.0.3 library to Final Cut Pro 10.1.1

Is there any way to migrate the whole iMovie 10.0.3 library to Final Cut Pro 10.1.1?
I know we can use "Send project to Final Cut Pro" function from iMovie but it works for a selected project only, not the whole event library with structure.

Thanks for your confirmation!  It seems to me this is the situation after tons of research.....
I really don't understand Apple's logic/philosophy now.... in the new iMovie... it takes out the keywords which is extremely important to anyone with many clips.  I don't mind to pay for the expensive FCPX but I am told that FCPX cannot migrate the iMovie library..... sigh....... what **** they are thinking....
BTW, it seems the "Send project to Final Cut Pro" function doesn't support sending even the "Event". It supports only sending project with the clips associated with the project.  There is no way to send the clip without associated to project.  Anyone can confirm it?

  • Trying to convert video files with an extension of IDI_DVD to digital files itunes and imovies can read can someone help me

Can someone please tell me how I can convert video files with an extension of IDI_DVD to a file itunes and imovie can read? Thanks.

Thanks for the reply, The files are on a DVD disk. I coverted my family VHS tapes to digital dvds using an HP Media Centre PC five or more years ago cant remember the program but if I get info on the disk ,on the Mac it tells me the extension is IDI_DVD.

  • Why is so hard for FCE or iMovie to read AVCHD files?

I have some AVCHD files (.MTS) on a hard disk. No camera. And no, the directory format has not been preserved. The files were just copied, and renamed for backup purposes. "Log and Transfer..." in FCE gives me an error about the directory structure. And I can't import with iMovie (just won't let me select the files.)
Now, I think I would have a better chance of finding a solution, if I knew why Final Cut Express 4 or iMovie 7.1.1 can only read the AVCHD file format from the camera directly, or when the directories are setup in a particular way.
Why can't it just read the file? Like how any program can read a JPEG without having to plug-in a camera or create a folder called "PRIVATE" or whatever?
I've wasted several hours on this problem today, and the the only conclusion i can come up with is that Apple has some seriously incompetent or just plain lazy engineers.
There must be a proper technical reason... right?

    Hi -
    Jason Moore3 wrote:
It's just so weird that all FCE and iMovie can read the files - they just require you to "connect the camera". Why is the camera so important to reading the file?
It's not. It's just an easy way to insure that when FCE or iMovie are looking at the file storage directory, FCE or iMovie will see all the files, the metadata, the media, etc.. It also makes for an easier work flow- just plug in the camera, no need to off-load files and remember where the are stored, etc.. And, it helps develop a workflow where people are not just copying the media files to another disk without the metadata, as in your case, or make a mistake and copy the metadata without the media.
Imagine this: three big tractor trailers pull up outside your house loaded with stuff. As you go out to meet them a driver hands you a small package. You open it up, and inside is a complete description of what is packed, how each item is packed, where each item is in the container, and how best to unpack the containers for the easiest installation in your house. That is what the metadata does. Could you unpack the containers without it? Yes. Is it the optimal way? No.
Many threads discuss how it's possible to backup the whole directory and making a disk image and then "tricking" iMovie/FCE into reading the files, which leads me to think that this stupidity is intentional.
This is not a trick. iMovie has the "Archive All" button on the import window. To later access those files you would use the menu File > Import > Camera Archive. In FCE, where one would expect a slightly more computer savvy user, you can use Disk Utility to create a disk image of the contents of the camcorder files, then later, use Log and Transfer from within FCE to import the footage from that disk image.
Someone doesn't want people to actually have a HD video format that is easy to work with (OMG pirates!!) and so it's been crippled to make it a PITA to work with.
Hmmm, well, all you have to do is follow the recommended workflow - connect the camera, import the footage, and edit. FCE and iMovie take care of the footage conversion from AVCHD which is a format incredibly difficult to edit in to a format that allows easy editing, all without user intervention.
The end result is, I can't view my own content.
The system Apple developed of converting AVCHD to either AIC or Pro Res is probably the best way to make the editing process as painless as possible for the end user.
Having said that, Sony Vegas, a windows application, will natively edit AVCHD files, without any conversion. I don't have any experience with it so can't say what the experience is like, but it might be an alternative for you if the iMovie/FCE workflow is not working for you.
    Hope this helps.

  • How do I get home video clips from iMovie Mac to iMovie iPad?  Surely there is some degree of cross-compatibility?  I have a load of clips in iMovie on my MBP that I wanna download to my iPad2 so that I can edit movies on the move.  Any ideas?

How do I get home video clips from iMovie Mac to iMovie iPad?  Surely there is some degree of cross-compatibility?  I have a load of clips in iMovie on my MBP that I wanna download to my iPad2 so that I can edit movies on the move.  Any ideas?  (The clips are in a .mov format, they have been imported / converted into this format in iMovie, original files were from a JVC camcorder in some other strange format.)

I copied the iTunes file from the external drive and it's in both places.  I thought all I would need is the iTunes program (which I downloaded to new computer) and my iTunes library file.  There must be something else that's missing.  My iTunes library looks the same on the new computer as it does when I open it on the external drive.  If I click on an iTunes library song from my new computer, it will only play if I have the external drive plugged in.
My back-up drive is a mess.  I have multiple copies of music, video, photo, and document files and I don't know how that happened. ={  Obviously, I don't know how to back up stuff properly and there are back-up files extending over a 6- to 8-year period.  I think all I did was just drag and drop the main folders from the back-up drive to the same main folders on the C: drive.  Also (and I'm kind of fuzzy on this) Windows used to automatically save music files in a folder within my document files (which makes no sense to me).  As my Jewish friends would say, "Oy Vey!"

  • Is it possible to have iMovie HD and iMovie HD 6 installed on the same Mac

While I like some of the video editing features of iMovie HD 6, the problems with the Ken Burns Effect have killed my ability to create slideshows with iMovie. This worked just fine in iMovie HD (version 5.x). Is it possible to have both applications installed on my iMac and run one for slideshow production and the other for video production?
I searched and could not find a thread that addressed this issue. If there is one, the URL will be greatly appreciated.

    Catspaw,
Thank you. I should have thought of this, as I am running iMovie 8 and iMovie HD 6 on an Intel iMac at work. When I installed iMovie HD 6 onto this system (I'm not a fan of the latest incarnation of iMovie), it was put into a "previous version" folder. Since my G4 iMac already has been upgraded to iMovie HD 6, I'll just put iMovie HD 6 into a folder (maybe label it as the "latest version") and then install iMovie HD 5.
Thank you for the insight on the trash emptying messing with the re-editing of photos. If I start a new project using the same photos from iPhoto (I use the media browser within HD 6 to select my photos in my iPhoto library) and never empty the trash until the project is complete, will the problem not appear? Or, does some magic thing tag my iPhotos so that I have to reimport them into iPhoto before using them again in iMovie HD 6?

  • Are the iMovie Events and iMovie Projects folders needed?

I'm using version 10.0.6 of iMovie and moved some of my projects to an external HD using File > Move Events to Library.  I noticed in my Movies folder in my home directory that the related project folders under iMovie Events and iMovie Projects weren't moved.  It seems that these are left over after upgrading iMovie and that it just uses the iMovie Library and iMovie Theater bundles.  Can the iMovie Events and iMovie Projects folders be safely deleted?

Yes they can be deleted if you have moved all the projects you want to work further on to iMovie 10, have checked that they are working OK, and are happy with switching permanently to iMovie 10.  (There's no going back).
On the other hand if you leave them you can still use the earlier version of iMovie.
    Geoff.

Somehow it doesnt' see all the movies I have on iMovie 9 library.  What do I do?

I'm dealing with this same issue. At one point, it did recognize the Update function but then said it could not import the cache.mov and plist files which apparently means that imovie 10 can't see any of these past events. I can't figure it out.

When I go to save my unfinished imovie project, neither of the "imovie projects" or "imovie events" are visible where they should be. Why is this?

The latest version (iMovie 10) doesn't have iMovie projects and iMovie events folders - these were for iMovie 9 and earlier.   In iMovie 10 Projects are in Events and Events are in Libraries.  When you quit iMovie the current status of your projects and events are automatically saved in the library so there is nothing to do.  The default location for libraries is in ~ / Movies folder but you can put them anywhere, such as on an external drive .  If you want to backup the library you can make a copy of it on a separate disk or memory stick using the Finder.

  • Upgrading projects from iMovie 11 to iMovie 13

    Hi all,
I just upgraded to iMovie 2013 and had to force quit during the process of migrating my content from iMovie 2011 to 2013.  I am supposed to be able to use the Update Projects and Events command to search for old projects events and import them, but it is unable to find any old projects or events.  Instead I have an empty iMoview library, even though i have folders full of events and projects in my User/Movies folder.  I have tried re-installing iMovie 2013 three times, but it always loads the same library and even if I delete the library it will re-create the same empty library.  Each time I deleted any file in the ~/Library I could find which seemed ot belong to iMovie.
How can I get it to import my old projects and events?  I think I am unaware of the pref Library files I need to remove to fully reset it?
    Any help would be great.
    Thanks,
    Greg

Apologies, I think I meant to say iMovie 9 to iMovie 10.  I still think of these in terms of ILife '11 etc...
