IMovie hung up on previous project

I may have loaded some clips into iMovie I maybe shouldn't have...I say this because it took a long time for iMovie to actually display them and it's not happy about it..very sluggish..prbly not the best clips for iMovie.
Anyway, now, when I open iMovie, I think it's trying to re-open that project with  those gnarly clips and I don't know the best way to clear the decks..make iMovie forget about that project.
What IS the way? Trash iMovie's prefs?
thank you,
ray

Richard,
"Note: if you burn your project to a double-layer disk, you should burn directly from iDVD rather than from a disk image. A disc-burning utility will not set the layer break according to DVD specification and may cause playback issues."
True, this is what is clearly stated by apple in the iDVD6 Help Menu. However, in practice a few users (including Len Goff & myself) have found the opposite.....namely, it's ok to make a disc image first on your desktop and then use Toast to burn the image to Verbatim / Maxell DVD-R at 4x or slower ..... works fine.

iMovie 11 is not working. I try to open it and it says it is generating thumbnails for one of my previous projects. All the commands are gray. I have to force it to quit. I just want to capture clips to start a new project. I googled the problem and there were discussions about deleting files in various folders and renaming clip extensions. I don't like the solutions I saw there and I am not sure they will work.

Nobody replied so I called Apple. They seemed to think they could fix the problem but I had to agree to pay about $20 first. I told them to put it down as a complaint. I only want to use the software I bought. I can't see that it is my fault it is malfunctioning. I guess I will have to pay. It doesn't seem right.

  • How do I reopen a previous project I was working on in imovie?  Please help

I had to work on two imovie projects.  I began the first one and I was about half done.  I had to start the second one so I created a "new project".  I worked on the second one, but now I want to go back to the first one to finish editing.  I go to "Finder" then the "movies" folder, then "imovie projects", then I pick my first movie project I was working on.  Imovie doesn't open the first project, it just goes back to my second project, but I want to edit the first.  So, how do I open a previous project I was working on in imovie?

  • Do I Really Need To Uninstall IMovie '11 to Access Completed Projects from IMovie '09?

    Hi everyone:
    What's Happening
I would like to uninstall IMovie '11 so I can complete a project I spent hours (and hours) creating in IMovie '09.
I am frustrated that IMovie '11 has deleted the project I had previously in IMovie '09, after I upgraded to IMovie '11.
Immediately after I upgraded to IMovie '11 recently, I DID see my previous '09 projects still reflected, although I also noticed my IMovie '11 removed weird, random features (titles, mostly) during the transition. And it was very random - i.e., some of my titles were reflected; some HALVES of my titles weren't, etc. Just random.
Noticing this and not wanting to miss anything I did with my completed project (which was already good to go, before the upgrade), I then tried uploading the last fully complete version of my project, as edited in IMovie '09. I went into my Time Capsule and just went back by a few hours and restored those project files. However, IMovie '11 not only did not recognize any of my '09 projects, it actually DELETED all of the projects it originally showed me when I upgraded. So now I was totally out of my project files!
Therefore, if I want to edit that and publish them ASAP, it seems I have to literally:
    Uninstall iMovie '11.
    Reinstall '09.
Restore my last completed '09 project file.
    Upgrade again to IMovie '11.
This time, if I notice some titles are weird, don't try to bring any of my old files with me again. Just let them naturally show up as they did before, and literally fix and comb through literally every. single. quirk. or new error I see.
    My Question
Is this really what I have to do in order to retrieve a project I already spent hours completing in '09? Or is there some shorter way to retrieve those files that IMovie '11 has dismissed and deleted?
Also, does Apple know about this bug? Are they doing anything about it? Does anyone know?
Any answers would be HUGELY appreciated!
    Thank you,
    DRS.

Thanks for your reply, Klaus1.  I'm currently running Snow Leopard.  I'd considered upgrading to Lion but was told, even by Apple, that I wouldn't be satisfied with its slow performance on my iMac 24.
I have plenty of hard drive space with 160 GB available on my internal hard drive, but I've been storing the archived video clips and the iMovie projects on a fire-wired, external 2 TB drive.  Could it be that using an external hard drive for the iMovie project is part of the performance problem?
A quick check on the Apple website shows that my iMac 24, which was manufactured in mid-2007, can support up to 4 GB of RAM.  I wonder if I should consider a RAM upgrade before upgrading the entire computer.  How big a deal is it to replace RAM in the iMacs?

  • HT202853 iMovie failing to update older projects and events on external hard drive.

I've made sure my iMovie events and iMovie projects files are on the top level of my external hard drive, however iMovie says, "iMovie could not find any events or project files to update" please help.
I only recently updated my computer to OSX 10.10.1 ; before that, I was using OSX 10.6.8 Snow Leopard. Not sure if that has any effect on this topic.
    Here are my specs:
Type: MacBook Pro (13-inch, Early 2011)
Processor: 2.3 GHz Intel Core i5
    Memory: 4GB 1333 MHz DDR3
    Startup Disk: Macintosh HD
Pretty sure graphics and serial dont matter so I wont put it in.
But yea, I've been trying to figure out what's going on for a few days and have had no result.
This problem's really hindering my progress for a film I'm making and iMovie is getting more and more frustrating to use as it develops.
I hope somebody be able to help me asap.
    Thanks

If you want to try and start over with the iMovie 10 "Update Projects and Events...", remove the "UpdatedToiMovie10" file in both the iMove Events and iMovie Projects folders (the older folders). Then open iMovie 10 and reselect "Update Projects and Events...". My expectation is that you will experience the same missing events problem I have, caused by changing the clip date and time in the previous version of iMovie (9). It's a bug that persists through iMovie 10.0.8 (just released a few days ago). Really really wish Apple could fix this.

  • How to hide previous project files??

If you have a client sitting with you at your computer and you have iMovie open for reviewing, etc., you might want to hide previous projects, but iMovie shows ALL previous "events"! How do you hide all past work and start with a "clean" slate without loosing files??

Get an external hd and just move them off by holding down the ⌘ Command key while dragging to move the folders rather than copy them. iMovie doesn't have a simple way to hide those projects, they literally need to be moved out of the iMovies Project folder.
The other quick and dirty way of doing it is go to:
Mac HD > Users > (your home folder) > Movies > iMovie Projects > (drag the folders out to the desktop). These projects can be dragged back in after you are done screening the Project for your client without any damage to the projects at all. So just try dragging them out for now.

  • IMovie and when saving a project

When i save an imovie project, and i look into the movies folder, it seems like it is archiving and saving another copy of the movie file. It adds a tilda ( ~ ) to the file name.
Can anyone help and explain why it does this and also a possible fix to stop it from happening again

It is the file that is read when you select Revert to Saved from the File menu.
Actually, it's a bit sneakier than that. Revert to Saved reverts to the file that does NOT have the tilde. It reverts to the last-saved version of the project. When we Revert, the changes we made since last saving are discarded.
The tilde file is the PREVIOUSLY-saved version of the project, the project as it was BEFORE we last saved. Only rarely — I've seen it happen just one time when opening a project — iMovie offers to restore the project to that PREVIOUSLY-saved state. When opening the project it identified a problem with the project file and offered to rescue the project by opening the project as it was earlier.
I've never seen anyone mention that here, but it happened to me once.

  • Can't Open Previous Projects

When I try to open any one of my past iMovie '09 projects, the old project briefly comes on the screen (for approximately 2 - 3 seconds) and then quickly changes over to whatever is the most recent new project I've started. So, I can't go back to any of my previous projects to work on them again. I'd love it if someone could help me unlock this mystery.
I may have just figured this out on my own. I was trying to open old projects by clicking on the actual project file instead of by using the Project Library tab in IMovie. Is it possible to open an old project by opening directly from the file, or is the Project Library tab the only way to do it?

I'm having the exact same problem as the above poster.  I'm using Windows 7 and PE4 worked for a while until one day it crashed (as it tended to do pretty often).  It offered me the chance to save my project as it was crashing and so I did.  Then whenever I tried to use the program again, it would always crash and "minimize" when trying to open a project or start a new one exactly as it did for the other person.  I'd been thinking about upgrading my software anyway, so I got Premiere Elements 9.  Now it won't work.  If I try to start a new project, it gives me a blank screen.  I try to open one, I get "Sorry, a serious error has a occured [...]".  It's basically an updated version of the same original problem.
My computer is a Dell Studio 1555 (I think that translates to Dell Studio 16).  It's got an Intel Core 2 Duo processor, 281 GB of free space, a regularly defragmented hard drive, 4 GB of RAM, and an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4570 video card.  The problem can't be blamed on video compatibility as the original problem in the old software arose randomly after I had been using the same Flip HD camcorder and video settings for a while and the new software hasn't interacted with any video yet because it crashes before I can get any in!  What the heck is going on here?

  • IMovie Can't Find Moved Projects

I am trying to move all of my iMovie Files (events folder and projects folder) from an external drive to my internal drive. I have moved the event files successfully from within iMovie. But I don't know how to move the project files. I tried moving them manually, but now iMovie doesn't see the projects anymore.

How did you move the projects folder to an external drive in the first place, if it was with the use of a symlink then you should be able to copy your projects folder back to its default location (in your movies folder) and delete the symlink.

  • How do I add another movie to the project area to work on without it being attached to a previous project?

How do I add another movie to the project area to work on without it being attached to a previous project?

No.  I have a number of items in the Event Library.  I am trying to move some of them to the Project Library and when I do it attaches itself to the other project I have there.

  • Final cut X-- how do you open previous projects?

i must be missing something really basic. How do you open previous projects in Final Cut X? When I try to open one it hangs on "loading (nameofproject) into time line.

You need to provide more information. Are you seeing it within the FCP interface properly when you go to show the Project Library?  If so, I would click on it to select it and then open the Inspection window and click on Modify Event References and select proceed from there. I'm assuming you have not moved the project from it's proper folder....

  • IMovie User Interface messed up, projects in danger.

Hello there, and thanks for checking in.
This evening, I was working on a project I had been doing for a few weeks now, with lots of 1080 and 720 footage, tons of effects, settings changed (Generally detailed work, hard to render in RT)
When I was moving around a "Cutout" of a 1080 clip, on top of another 1080, something happened, the UI froze up, save data, I could move the cursor around, but only the video changed. Meaning no playhead, no UI changes, just a video feed of me, scrubbing.
I of corse quit the application, and reopened it, but now... The UI doesn't update on it's own, and the entire project is screwed up. Infact, I can't even check my other projects, cause the buttons do not work, I can play the project and that's it.
Is there anything I can do? Or did a bug in the system ruin my very very old work forever? (I have Time Machine, if THAT works, doubt it)
Here's a picture of how the problem looks (I opened up a few items in the menu-bar to manually refresh the UI, And I have indeed restarted, rebooted, and quit all other apps.) http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g284/allingby/Screenshot2009-09-10at022935.png
If there's something I can do, please help.
If not... Then may I suggest that there should be an option 'Not to auto-save'? I'm pretty ****** off, I can **** well save myself, this is all because iMovie saved on it's own, in a frozen moment!
Sorry for the attitude, but I believe the software is a little "Too easy" to use, and needs fixing, and options.
Hope to get advice soon, as in 24 hours, Time Machine will be out of reach to go back to an hour earlier. Thankyou for your time, Allingby.

To everyone who encounter this issue:
I fixed it, thanks to time machine, I got a one hour older copy!
To fix the problem, go to time machine and find your project file (Located in Movies > iMove Projects) and take one from a time that works, "Restore to" in... I dunno, some folder on desktop, rename it. Then you open your destroyed iMovie, make a new event, and project, then quit and reopen. Now the app works, but your old projects (If opened) are still ****, so quit iMovie, go and put the project file from time machine, into the real folder (Still Movies > iMovie Projects) and launch iMovie again, then chose the project with the new name, and PRESTO!

  • IMovie suddenly quits...project disappears...was almost finished..???

I teach in a small northern Wisconsin school/community, the art teacher...and we are moving into videography. Bought a Canon XL2 camera...have a Mac lab...one iMac and eMacs. Our computers are on a network.
I'm trying to work thru the learning curve myself so I can teach this to students. Twice now nearing the end of the developing video process, the movie suddenly quits. Trying to open the "Recent" by clicking on the upper left blue Apple suggests the file was never there, never existed.
The second time this happened was tonight. I had an hour length video with 20 hours of after school time into it. I had already burned the video once minus audio so we could write a script and go into our recording studio to lay tracks. Was near finished when it suddenly disappears, so it feels a bit like a kick in the gut to see this happen. Most assuredly the students will not have the resilience even once to rebuild a movie that suddenly disappears.
Our tech guy isn't quite sure what's happening either.
One thing we do see is that our Gig space consumed in the making of the video is not being returned after its disappearing...so it is chewing up memory apparently existing somewhere.
I'll have to rebuild this video beginning shortly, but wondering at this point what is to prevent this from happening all of a sudden once more???
We have iMovie 5/ iDVD 5
thanks for your thoughts on this...

Here's a thought. The error message about conversion may be misinformed. Think like a programmer for a minute. The routine he writes opens the iMovie project file that's inside the project package. He has iMovie read the file looking for a flag that tells iMovie which version made the project. The flag that iMovie expects doesn't say iMovie 5, so iMovie reports a version error to you and offers to convert the project.
But the file is fine. The problem is with the data iMovie evaluates, not the file. iMovie couldn't read it correctly because of some unexpected factor. Perhaps the server uses a disk format iMovie doesn't understand. Then iMovie's analysis would lead to the wrong result because the data isn't delivered in the format iMovie expects. Where a version flag should be, the project file says "horse feathers". Obviously that's not iMovie 5, so iMovie offers to convert it.
If something like that is happening, the problem may be caused by storing the project on the district server. Try storing the project locally.
I have no experience working with iMovie in an environment like yours, so I'm just guessing. I suspect, however, there may be lots of different disk/networking factors that might cause a failure like you see.
We do know this: iMovie expects us to use the Mac OS Extended disk format. When a local disk is something else, we get unexpected results.
