IMovie - iDVD and a NTSC versus PAL question

I have some questions about creating iMovie for use in iDVD and about the various formats.  Here goes:
I have a large number of travel photos taken in various cities that I need to use to create a project in iMovie.  In addition, I have a couple of smallish video segments that go with each of these cities.  I want to be able to get to any section from the DVD menus.  The sections being defined as the either the videos or the photos for each individual city.  Also, I need to be able to create both NTSC and PAL formatted DVD's from this exercise.
Now, as I understand it, there's several ways I can approach this:
First, I can use iMovie to create discreet projects for each segment.  The individual city videos being one type.  The photo shows of the individual cities being another type.  Then export each of these via the media browser and import them individually into iDVD.  But that then begs the question of NTSC versus PAL.  Since I have to choose a project format in iMovie (NTSC or PAL), does that imply that I've got to have separate projects for each one of the cities NTSC or PAL versions?  Or can I just use the NTSC project and cut the DVD in either NTSC or PAL format based on the settings in iDVD?  If I use this route, what's the best export format to use for optimal appearance on the finished DVD?
Second, I can create one long project in iMovie.  Put chapter markers in it and export it to the media browser.  Then, import it into iDVD and use the chapter markers referenced from the various menu picks.  If I go this route, once again, how do I account for the NTSC versus PAL differences?  And again, what's the best export settings for optimal viewing?
I guess much of this question relates to the issue of having to specify a format in both iMovie and iDVD.  If I choose NTSC in iMovie, but use PAL in iDVD, other than the obvious format mismatch, what actually happens by doing this?  Or, turn it around.  Use PAL in iMovie and NTSC in iDVD.  Again, what's the ramifications of doing this?
Just trying to figure out the best way of going about this and what the tradeoffs are for each approach.  Any insight you can offer would be greatly appreciated.  Oh... and sorry to have been so long winded.
Many thanks in advance,
Tom

Hi
Oh Dear. Is this an assigned task from an editing turor. Then He/She is mean.
a. If You want a DVD - Then You should not use iMovie'08 or 09 or 11 as they can not export interlaced video to iDVD as it needs but discard every second line resulting in a less quality DVD. Use (for SlideShows and Movies)
• iMovie up to HD6 (SlideShows or Movie) - or -
• FinalCut any version (SlideShows or Movie) - or -
• FotoMagico (if You make only a SlideShow - can not do movies)
If persisting with iMovie'08-11 - Then DO NOT use "Share to iDVD" from within any version of iMovie (not 3 - HD6 either) as they do a bad job. But in iM'08-11 "Share to Media Browser" and as Large. In iM HD6 or FCE/P Save as QuickTime .mov and import this into iDVD.
b. NTSC and PAL - If DVD is to be sent to EU (PAL) - then most DVD-players also playback NTSC so conversion is not needed (mostly).
There are NO way to make a combo version PAL & NTSC - They do not exist.
If You make a PAL iMovie /FC project - then DO NOT let iDVD convert to NTSC (or other way either)
• it can do so - BUT Result is severely BAD
I use JES_Deinterlacer to make the conversion and it's so much better. (free on internet)
But absolutly best result is by doing two versions in the movie-editor - one PAL and one NTSC version.
c. Use High quality DVD brand - I only use Verbatim DVD-R
and set down burn speed to x4 - Less burn errors and plays on many more Players.
Just to start with.
Take one Q at a time and we can fix this.
Yours Bengt W

  • IMovie, iDVD, and Garageband all unexpectedly quit

I just got a new Mac and Migrated my old Mac PowerBook running iLife 08 and Tiger. Everything migrated and iPhoto and iTunes work fine, but iMovie, iDVD, and Garageband all quit unexpectedly when trying to open them.

haha okay i never said ilife should come with it (don't worry guys i know better :P) i just simply did not expect my installation of leopard to delete four applications that had already been there including two that come with every mac computer without even buying ilife. but thank you Kieran Jarrett for your help i am now happily running leopard with all my apps back.

  • IMovie/iDVD and 8-core vs. 4-core

I'm close to purchasing a new Mac Pro and I'm having a tough time deciding if the 8-core is worth the extra money. I've read MacWorld's review and it's benchmark tests. I've also seen some other reviews (Geekbench or something like that.) What I'm unable to tell is how encoding would be effected in iMovie or iDVD. My main work is related to converting analog video to digital and then creating a movie in iMovie and burning through iDVD. So much of my time is spent waiting around for the assets to encode and so time is definitely money. I'm just not sure it's worth the extra $1500 given some of the tests.
Given that I'm not working with 3D or working with multiple tasks or apps (where it seems that the 8-core shines) is there any benefit here in getting the 8-core over the quad-core? Will the extra cores kick in at all just encoding video? If I'm reading things right I'm not sure it would. Which raises another question. What if I finished an iMovie project, shared it with iDVD, and then began another iMovie project at the same time? Would this take advantage of the 8 cores? Also, will Leopard make much of a difference?

In regards to an 8-core refurb for $3300, that is still a quad-core system.
I've been watching the refurbs pretty closely for a couple of months (waiting to get a new Mac Pro), and have never seen an 8-core on there yet (unless I missed it).
They do have two Mac Pro's that are 3 GHz on there, and they are two different prices. But, neither of them is an 8-core system.
The only obvious difference is that the more expensive one has two Superdrives instead of just one. But, they are both definitely quads.
I am pretty confident that an 8-core system would sell for much more as a refurb than a quad core.
Anyway, I only provide this for information purposes. I hope this helps.

  • NTSC versus PAL

Can someone please tell me what the difference is between NTSC and PAL models?
On the list with camcorders compatible with Macs some of them are tested on NTSC and others on PAL. Will I have a problem choosing any of them?
Thank you very much in advance.

NTSC and PAL are analog television standards. Most European countries, including Greece, use the PAL standard. If you live in Greece and you plan to shoot video for use in your home country, then you should select a camcorder that supports PAL.
Here are links to more information about the PAL and NTSC video standards and usage.
Some PAL devices (camcorders, tape/DVD players, televisions, etc) also support NTSC but you have to read the features/specifications carefully.

  • IMovie, iDVD and iTunes authorization.

I've purchased several songs on iTunes and authorized them for use on my Mac. I can play the songs from my iTunes music library. However, if I try to use the songs in an iMovie or iDVD project, I'm continually prompted to authorize use, over and over... Consequently, I can't burn my iDVD project using the songs I purchased from iTunes. When I burn my DVD, I get all of the video and audio except the songs I purchased/authorized from iTunes. Any suggestions? l tried iTunes customer support...no help there. I'm trying to complete a DVD video project for someone this weekend. THANKS!!!

Thanks for the tips...really helped. I also found the following info from Kallie at iTunes support contact helpful.
Run Software Update and apply available updates, including Compatibility Update for QuickTime 7.4. Restart the computer after applying the updates. If that does not resolve the issue, follow normal troubleshooting for this symptom such as:
    1) Check to see if the track plays in iTunes and QuickTime Player.
    2) Check for non-Apple plugins in /Library/QuickTime/ and ~/Library/QuickTime/.
    3) Try reimporting the track into your iMovie, iDVD or iPhoto project.
    4) Check to see if the track works in a new project.
    5) Check to see if the existing project works for a new user on the same computer.
Thanks so much Klaus1 for you CD tip...it really saved my _ _ _! Finished my video on schedule, YES!
    Contiued Success! LK

  • NTSC versus PAL in HD DVD

In order to create an HD DVD in NTSC and then another version in PAL, would you have to recreate menus the way you would if it was a regular DVD in NTSC and then PAL?
    Thanks
    Alex

Do a quick search for HD Video Pixels in the PDF (and the page before for SD) menu layouts and for the HD they are the same size for most of the options in HD, and my guess is you are using one of those.
Note though if you are using video PAL and NTSC do have some different rates (take a look for Supported Video Resolutions and then Creating Video For Motion Menus) so the video part of the menu (if any) needs to be accounted for.

  • IDVD and standard (NTSC) television resolution...

If I understand correctly, television has 525 horizontal scan lines (NTSC), but I cannot find any options in any video conversion apps that offer a resolution option of 525x?.
What is the best resolution to choose when converting DVD files (which may be widescreen) to play on a standard television set with no black bars above, below or on the sides?
Also, what DVD file format should I choose to be safe as far as everyone being able to use it? If someone has a DVD console that is 9 years old, what is the safest file format to use.
And lastly, iDVD says it can use a dual-layer disc for up to 7.7GB of space. All my dual-layer blank DVD discs say they can hold up to 8.5GB.
    Why the huge discrepancy?
    Any help is appreciated.
    Thanx.

    Hello Michael,
*If I understand correctly, television has 525 horizontal scan lines (NTSC), but I cannot find any options in any video conversion apps that offer a resolution option of 525x?.*
The reason for this is that 525 scan line standard refers to analog video. See this guide for further confusion: http://lipas.uwasa.fi/~f76998/video/conversion/
The standard for NTSC digital video (DV) is 720x480
*What is the best resolution to choose when converting DVD files (which may be widescreen) to play on a standard television set with no black bars above, below or on the sides?*
The resolution should be that of the source (in this case the DVD) ... but you might run into trouble here because of widescreen issues as widescreen has the same resolution but a different pixel aspect ratio.
*Also, what DVD file format should I choose to be safe as far as everyone being able to use it? If someone has a DVD console that is 9 years old, what is the safest file format to use.*
The video format for a DVD is given: It is multiplexed MPEG-2 (VOB files). iDVD will output just that.
*And lastly, iDVD says it can use a dual-layer disc for up to 7.7GB of space. All my dual-layer blank DVD discs say they can hold up to 8.5GB*
Although most manufacturers of hard disks and Flash disks define 1 gigabyte as 1,000,000,000 bytes, the computer operating systems used by most users usually calculate a gigabyte by dividing the bytes (whether it is disk capacity, file size, or system RAM) by 1,073,741,824. This distinction is a cause of confusion, as a hard disk with a manufacturer rated capacity of 400 gigabytes may have its capacity reported by the operating system as only 372 GB, depending on the type of report.
    hope this helps

  • IPhoto, iMovie, iDVD, and Garage Band gone.

After doing an erase/install of Leopard these apps are no longer found. Is there a way to install these from the Leopard install disk or do I have to re-install Tiger then do an upgrade to Leopard? I do not feel like spending another day re-installing software!!!!!!
    Thanks
    MacBook Pro 2.2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo | 2GB memory | 120GB | 8x SuperDrive | NVIDIA GeForce 8600M

Leopard doesn't include iLife. iLife is included with computers; install iLife off the install media that came with your computer.
You don't need to spend another day re-installing software. However, it would have been nice if you'd spent 5 minutes searching the forum... this question has been asked like 200 times. No joke.

  • Multiple Libraries using iMovie/iDVD

When you create multiple libraries in iTunes,
How does it work when selecting music
    when working in iMovie, iDVD?
Does the Music interface show the two libraries
    in these programs?

Does the Music interface show the two libraries
    in these programs?
Unfortunately not. They only show the last used or active library.
Note that iTunes 7 is a recent release and iMovie, iDVD and iPhoto probably don't know (yet) that iTunes can have more libraries.

  • IMovie/iDVD projects

I've made a handful of iMovie/iDVD projects for family members. Right now they are taking up space on my hard drive. While I doubt I will go back to them, I would like the ability to work with them again. Can I take one of the DVDs that I created and just reload the iMovie/iDVD and add thing/make edits at a later date?

.. another option is, to use a back-up software as Toast 7/8, which allows socalled 'spanning'...
choose Data, drag iM project into Toast.. it will ask you to insert DVDs.. and more DVDs.. as tilman stated, an iM project contains 13GB per hour project length plus the many hours you have imported...
you need Toast to re-import such a disk collection, to re-assemble the many files of an iM project...
.. it is mostly recommended to spend 100$ for some external, firewire connected harddrive (format to hfs BEFORE use...) ... then, it's simply drag'n drop ...

  • Rotation Lost by iPhoto, iMovie, iDVD

I have never had any problems with iPhoto until I recently upgraded to iLife suite and iPhoto 5.
My specific problem is photographs need to be rotated depending on how the picture was taken (landscape or portrait). I'll go through a roll in the thumbnail mode, rotating to the proper postitions. Then when I try to edit a rotated picture, the edit mode does not recognize the rotation that has already taken place, and shows the picture in its original position.
What is WORSE, in doing a silde show in iMovie or iDVD, the thumbnails are correct, but when importing the pic into iMovie, the picture is in it original orientation (not rotated!!!)
Lastly, this only takes place with pictures I have imported with iPhoto 5. Any photos I imported in the old version of iPhoto all work properly with iMovie & iDVD and the thumnails match the orientation in the work.

    Hi Fooch,
have you upgraded to the latest version of iPhoto through software update.
If you have the latest version, have you rebuilt the iPhoto Library after you did that?
    Try this:
Before doing a rebuild make sure iPhoto's trash bin is emptied. You can do this by control clicking on the trash bin, or from the menu bar under iPhoto.
    Close iPhoto
    Duplicate the iPhoto Library folder
Drag the duplicate to the desktop (hopefully you have enough room on your hard drive for the duplicate.)
Launch iPhoto holding down the Command and Option keys until you see the rebuild options screen.
Choose the first three options. If you were missing photos in your library, also choose the last option. Be advised that you will get a roll of orphaned photos and it might be quite huge. Most of them will already be in your iPhoto library, but use caution when deleting anything from this roll until you are sure the photos are still in your library in another place. It might be a good idea to share/export this roll of photos just in case you need to import them again.
Back to the rebuild, depending on the size of your library it might take some time. When it is done, hopefully your photos will be there.
You might see some unexpected results as I did when I did a rebuild. Photos had been moved to wrong dates, video clips had lost their duration info and some were even orphaned from the jpg pointer file. It took me some time to straighten it out again.
This is the reason to make a duplicate before you rebuild, in case you do not like the result. If you don't like the result, close iPhoto, then delete the rebuilt library and drag the duplicate back into the Pictures folder making sure the name is iPhoto Library. Launch iPhoto and it should open the library in the Pictures folder.

  • NTSC vs PAL in HD -- editing and shooting question.

I've heard different answers on this question and all my Googling has resulted in nothing but more confusion, so I'm hoping someone in here who truly knows the answer to this can tell me.
I am based in Los Angeles, but am partnering up on a big project with some people who are based in Europe. The project we are shooting is going to be shot in New Zealand and we want to shoot it in HD. When we are done, we are planning on having both parties split up the footage and the European crew will edit half of it on FCP there in Europe, while my crew here in the U.S. will edit the other half on FCP here in the U.S.
Obviously, European TV and video are all PAL based and here in the U.S. it's all NTSC. My question is deceptively simple: are we going to have a problem if all the footage is shot on the same camera?
I typically use Canon HD video cameras (the A-1 and the HV20) that were purchased here in the U.S. to do my shooting. I would like to take these cameras on the trip and shoot with them, but I also want the footage I shoot to be compatible with my partner's PAL-based FCP system. I have heard that there is no such a thing as NTSC HD or PAL HD and that HD is just HD regardless of the country it's in. Is that true? Could I rent an HD camera in Europe and shoot stuff with it there and then bring the resulting tapes back here to the U.S. and play them on my U.S.-purchased HD cameras and decks and load it into my current FCP setup in L.A. without any problem? And would my partners be able to do the vice-versa (i.e. will my HD footage play and load on their HD cameras that were purchased in Europe?)
I would love to know if anyone has an answer to this. So far I've heard a lot of speculation and conjecture and no one I've talked to definitively seems to know.
    Many thanks if anyone does.

I have heard that there is no such a thing as NTSC HD or PAL HD and that HD is just HD regardless of the country it's in. Is that true?
Yes, its true. As far as "definition" goes, there is no difference between a 1080 image shot in a PAL region and a 1080 image shot in an NTSC region. However, which frame rate you intend to shoot at eg 50i / 60i, 25p / 30p etc will certainly make a difference. Most consumer level HD camera's are restricted depending upon the electrical frequency of the market region they are being sold in. If your camera was purchased in a 60Hz ( NTSC ) region then its likely your camera will only support 60i, 30p 24p etc. If its purchased in a 50Hz (PAL) region then it's likely to only support 50i, 25p etc.
Generally it is only the higher end pro camera's that support switching between systems ... neither the HV20 nor the XH-A1 have this capability.
Could I rent an HD camera in Europe and shoot stuff with it there and then bring the resulting tapes back here to the U.S. and play them on my U.S.-purchased HD cameras and decks and load it into my current FCP setup in L.A. without any problem?
Well that would depend on what camera you rented as compared to what your current setup is ... what's your current setup and what do you have in mind to rent?

  • IDVD and imovie will not import

I cannot import anything into iDVD or iMovie. I don't know if I have the wrong format, the files are too large, or what.
I had videos from my hi8 put onto DVD's. They are in individual folders marked "video TS"
They are "NTSC format. They are not "PAL" When I could not import them, I converted them in MPEG Streamclip to "DV" format, no luck. Then I tried MP4 format, no luck. I imported them using "file, import" into a new project. An error window appeared: Error during import. The file could not be imported: unknown error.
OR "The file could not be imported" and it named the file
I trashed the preferences file, also, just in case it was the software itself.
I HAVE to get a section of one of them removed for an eulogy next week.
    Any ideas?
