IMovie is lying to me about disk space!

Hi,
Recently I tried to import a 1.53GB .mov file into an iMovie project.
I currently have 12.7GB of free space on my HD, but when I tried to import the file, I am told there is not enough disk space! What is this lie and why is iMovie telling me it?
So what can i do (short of moving files off my HD) to free up more disk space if it refuses to believe I have enough??
Thanks
James

"..imported it using Windows Movie Maker (because there are no Mac drivers available.."
You don't need any Mac drivers.
All you do to import from the TRV 255E is to plug a 4-pin-to-6-pin FireWire (..Sony call it "i.Link", and it's also called "DV"..) cable into the camera, into the i.Link/DV socket, and plug the 6-pin end of the cable into your Mac. Your Mac - and iMovie - should instantly recognise the camcorder.
Unlike using Windows, Macs will just have a look and see what's connected to them, and will adjust themselves to accept whatever's there (..without putting up a notice saying "New Hardware Detected - do you want to install this driver, or that driver, or what Windows thinks is most appropriate, or the driver you have on a disc?" etc, and then restarting, and then saying "New Hardware Detected - installing appropriate driver", and so on, and so forth).
Forget drivers. You can import directly from your camcorder into iMovie just by connecting the camera to a Mac. All your conversions (..into Windows, into a DVD movie, etc..) have compressed the original material into an ineditable state. So it's had to be -e-x-p-a-n-d-e-d- again into an editable format for use with iMovie ..merely because you've gone all around the houses to get it into iMovie.
A straight import into iMovie directly from the camcorder of a 33 minute movie would use up about 6.5GB of hard disc space (..or about 13GB per hour). The total space needed for a 45 min iMovie project would be roughly 9.75GB. That's if you'd imported directly from the camcorder.
All this "in-betweening", though has meant that you've had to store the 1.3GB file, then you've needed 6.5GB space to expand it into, and you've needed, say, 13GB space to handle the intermediate unwrapping and temporary storage of the original while it's being converted into that 6.5GB editable version.
If you still have the original material on miniDV tape - which you had before importing it into Windows Movie Maker - then buy or borrow a 4-pin-to-6-pin FireWire/DV/i.Link cable ..which looks like this:
..and throw away all the various bits of weird video which you've put on your Mac, and just connect the camera to the computer, open iMovie, and import the footage directly from the camcorder.
(If you're in England, you can get one from PC World, Jessops, Dixons, Currys, etc, or any shop which sells electronic bits or camcorders.)
You'll need 6.5GB of hard disc space to capture 33 mins' worth of video directly from the camcorder - that 1.3GB was severely compressed! - and you'll need about the same again of empty space for editing (..chopping and re-arranging..) the video, and you'll need to have some more empty space, equivalent to about 10% of your Mac's total hard disc space, to keep spare for your Mac to use for "housekeeping", note-taking, etc. (..So if your Mac has, for example, an 80GB hard disc in it, aim to keep at least 8GB empty, for the Mac's own use.)
See how that works!

G'day.  I am using iMovie 11 and need to clear disk space.  How can I do that using an external drive, leaving me the option to go back and make changes or access old events or projects from that external drive?

The slightly bigger question is whether you want to move all movie content to the external drive (essentially meaning that drive will always need to be attached when you're working with your videos), or whether you just want to archive older videos off to the external drive.
If you want to move all videos, then just move the 'Movies' folder in your home directory to the external drive, then create an alias of the external 'Movies' back in to your home directory. Now the 'Movies' icon in your home directory will point to the external drive and everything will just work (as long as the external drive is attached when you launch iMovie)
If you want to archive older movies then each Movie should have its own subdirectory within your Movies folder. These can easily be moved off to the external drive, and moved back should you ever need to work on those movies again.

  • Error in iMovie about Disk Space after upgrade

I just upgraded to Mountain Lion. I created a movie in iMovie and when I tried to export it to YouTube, I got an error message about no disk space. I have over 700GB of space so I don't think that's the issue. I tried upgrading iMovie but it's asking for an old AppleID that no longer exists.
    So I have 2 problems:
How can I upgrade iMovie when it's asking for a non-existant Apple ID?
How can I fix the situation in the version of iMovie I'm currently running?
    PLEASE HELP!

It sounds like Time Machine is turned ON and the computer is making backups to the hard disk.  This space is freed automatically, if required by the OS.

  • IDVD complaining about disk space (wants about 23458723094587235723945 GB)

In a school lab situation, we have iMacs set up with Tiger server. Students log into server and have a quota of disk space for their working environment - I think it's 100 GB.
They're creating short iMovie projects (about 2 - 4 minutes) and are required to submit them to their teachers on DVD.
More often than not, when a student chooses the Share -> iDVD option, iDVD refuses to burn the DVD claiming that there's not enough room to build the disc. It says the disc will require several quintillion gigabytes (give or take) to render.
Idunno... this is only a two or three minute video. I kinda doubt that's true!

    Hi
Most probably a pro issue - But I share my amateur thoughts (may be do not apply
    on Server/Net-work systems)
    iDVD
Not knowing the origin to Your problem - General approach when in trouble is as follows:
    • Free space on internal (start-up) hard disk if it is less than 10Gb should rather have 25Gb
    • Hard disk is untidy: Repair Permissions, Repair Hard disk (Apple Disc Util tool)
    • Delete iDVD pref file - *or rather start a new user/account* - log into this and re-try
    • Program miss-match: iDVD 5.0.2, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.4.1 - is OK - DON’T work under Leopard
    • Program miss-match: iDVD 6.0.4, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.4.1 - is OK (might work under Leopard)
    • Program miss-match: iDVD’08 v. 7.0.1, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.4.1 - is OK (might work under Leopard)
    • iDVD (08) v7 Locate theme folder. Move out iDVD1, iDVD 2 and eventually iDVD4 folders to desktop - re-try
iDVD 6.0.4 and iDVD 7.0.1 are compatible with Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard
iDVD pref file resides: Mac Hard Disk (start-up HD)/Users/"Your account"/Library/Preferences
    and is named: com.apple.iDVD.plist
While iDVD is NOT RUNNING - move this file out to desk-top.
    Now restart iDVD.

  • OCD about disk space

Ok. I'm very ocd about my disk space. I keep track of everything. I'm also a video editor and music collector. This is a funny, 'cause those are the biggest files you can have.
NOW, my Mac says that I've used 83.69gb of disk space with 27.78 left.
I've look through the computer and can only account for roughly 60gb.
I right clicked everything in my "macintosh hd" hard drive folder.
I have 4.72gb of apps, 1.86gb of system info, 19.88gb of library, 34.63gb of user data, and 4k each for cache data and manuals.
    I'm still missing 20gb.
I don't really know what to ask.
How do I find that 20gb, or how do I get a detailed map of what my hard drive is holding.
    Please and thank you.

    Hi Valentine Moreau;
May I suggest a little application that I find to be great when you are attempting to find out what is using up your disk sapce it is called WhatSize.

  • Alerts about disk space

I am a new admin as the old one has left.  He apparently set up alerts for low disk space on the exchange server.  I keep getting the alerts but the frequency at which they come is at an insanely fast pace.  I want to edit it but not sure

How can i tell if this is a script or perfmon, etc?

    Hi,
In addition to the above information,
Please check your exchange server for registry setting -
DiskSpaceThreshold value to confirm whether the email alert is triggered on event id - 2013 and to alter the percentage of free disk space available before an alert is logged.

  • Can't save an IMovie...RE: "not enough disk space"

We made a movie in iMovie (lots of photos no video) and are trying to save in iDVD but get an error message that states "Burning the disk can not proceed becuase the Startup Disk does not have enough empty space. To burn the disk, the Finder needs space on the Startup disk equal to the size of the disc. Error code -34".
Don't understand what to do to solve this and burn this file to a DVD. I think our file size is at 1.77 GB and available shows 1.91 GB (though capacity is much higher. Is this referencing our HD memory space?). Thank you!

    Hello,
If you only have 1.91GB free there is your problem. you should have 5GB if not more free for this type of work. If your running out of space it might be time to invest in a new external harddrive.

  • Q: How to properly shutdown part/all of VDI? and question about disk space

Hi again. I was able to get the VDI to work, but yesterday I changed the ARC parameter both in the storage and the xvm server (not sure in which is needed to be changed) and restarted both machines, to my surprise, the templates and the cloned VM had disappeared, so I was wondering if there is a proper way to shut down parts or the whole VDI? is there a sequence? and, of course, how to then turn everything back online ...
How to make things permanent or at least, to export them so one can then import them back after the reboot?
I did not find this in the documentation, the vdi3.pdf, if it is somewhere else, plz provide me with the link.
    also...
I was curious that I could not see the space being used in the storage server:
    root@australia:~# df -kl
Filesystem 1K-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on
    VDisksPool 202890010 19 202889991 1% /VDisks
    rpool 58603340 78 58603262 1% /rpool
    root@australia:~# ls -l /VDisks/
    total 0
but acording to the VDI page, the storage is being used at 3%:
    Storage:
    Number of Storages: 1
    Total Capacity:200.32 GB
    Usage:3%
how to check this? where is the space being used?
    thanks in advance

If your database is the same version of mySQL on the MAMP as
    on the server,
then you should be able to just export it from one and import
    it to the
other. If not, you could try doing something similar to what
    I describe

I'm not sure, but I think you might wind up having to make
    some adjustments
to it. For instance, is the user name and password identical
    on your server
and your MAMP installation? If not, you'll have to edit some
    of the
    connection data.

This may well be because the type of person who writes these

unlikely to be using the automatically generated scripts.

  • IMovie 6 keeps saying "not enough disk space to import..."

    Hi Everyone
My iMovie 6 has started giving this message when I try to import raw movie clips from my digital camera (already on my desktop). The program is telling me I have nearly 150GB of free space so I don't get this conflicting information...?
    Can anyone help please?

I'd suggest to delete some apps or photos. The program could have false information. Sorry if this does not help.

  • Error About Disk Space When Syncing Photos to iPhone

I just got my new iPhone 4 and have had trouble syncing photos to it. Close to completion I get the below error:
"No photos were copied to the iPhone “__” because there is not enough free space on the iPhone to hold your photos and photo albums."
As iTunes reports I have over 10 GB free on the device. Does anyone know how this could be fixed?

I should note, I tried deleting the photo cache, rebuilding the iPhoto library, and turning off photo sync then syncing then turning it back on.

  • Insufficient Disk Space Messages !!

On opening iMovie HD 5.02 I get a warning about disk space running dangerously low. I then try to add a title or effect a simple transition between two clips of a very short (10 min) series of imported clips and am told that I do not have enough remaining disk space for that operation. In fact I have 100 GB of free disk space. Advice please.

On opening iMovie HD 5.02 I get a warning about disk space running dangerously low.
That is the drive/partition where you saved your iMovie project when you created it. It doesn't matter how many gigs you have free on any other drive/partition.

  • How much disk space does a typical system start up disk use?

I am trying to partition a 640 GB hard drive for my 17" MacBook Pro. I created a partition of 30GB for the "System Start Up Disk", and after installing the original Tiger OSX software, and then doing the Leopard Upgrade Install, It says that I am out of disk space on that partition.
Does anyone know how much disk space is sufficient for a typical System Start-Up Disk?
How about disk space for Applications?

    Welcome to Apple's discussion groups.
Why do you want to partition that disk?
Does anyone know how much disk space is sufficient for a typical System Start-Up Disk?
When not booted from that drive (meaning, I believe, that it's not allocating swap or page space) my OS X 10.5 system uses 68.4 GB, including 10 GB for applications, 2.5 GB for the Developer folder, and 25.5 GB for user folders.

    Hi Everyone,
I am looking to create a SCOM 2012 Logical Disk Space Availability View and having a little trouble finding documentation on how to do this. It would be really handy to see all of the servers being monitored and how much free space they have all in one view.

  • How to setup DISK SPACE alert on OEM 10g Grid Control...

    Gurus,
I am trying to setup DISK SPACE notification / alert thru OEM 10g Grid Control, but so far no luck.
Can someone help/guide me on how to achieve this?
    Please advice.
    Thanks & Regards,
    Kartik

Those two links don't say anything about "DISK SPACE ALERT" I already know how to setup notification. I suppose you are talking about Filesystem Space Available (%)
If you need to setup an alert (Notification) then i suppose you need to setup an notification rule.
Yes, these notes do not have the key word "DISK SPACE ALERT" you are looking for, but if you go through the first note CLEARLY and COMPLETELY, you should find your answer.
And he has given an example for Filesystem space available in this note, which is what you are looking for.(I think so)
Say for Disk Space, you create a notification rule for target hosts and have metric "Filesystem Space Available (%)" defined in that rule.
If you aren't talking about notifications and just want to setup an filesystem space available metic, then follow this note:

    Hello,
I installed Oracle 9.2.0.1.0 on HP Pavilion running Windows XP Professional (Pentium 4).
Following are the numbers about disk space:
Space before starting Installation: 56.8 GB
Universal Installer indicated Enterprise Edition needs 2.86 GB and I selected General purpose database.
Universal Installer in summary before starting installation shows:
    Space requirements as
    C:\Required 2.57 (includes 90 MB temporary): Available 56.82GB
After completion of installation: I had hard disk space available as 32.6 GB (Approximately 25 GB space was taken)
Within couple of hours hard disk space dropped to 12 GB
and some thing kept taking the hard disk space.
Where is the problem? Oracle? XP? HP?
After uninstall Oracle and deleting Oracle home space is 56.5
Am I doing some thing wrong?
Earlier I tried the same on XP home edition and within couple of hours I ran out of space on same computer after installing Oracle 9.2
