IMovie is making 4:3 video 16:9 automatically?

I am importing .dv files into iMovie from a firestore, the video is 4:3 but iMovie is automatically making them 16:9 and I can't seem to make them revert to 4:3. I can't seem to find any setting that I am able to change to import them as only 4:3.
Any suggestions?

I am importing .dv files into iMovie from a firestore, the video is 4:3 but iMovie is automatically making them 16:9 and I can't seem to make them revert to 4:3. I can't seem to find any setting that I am able to change to import them as only 4:3.
If the DV files display as 16:9 in a 16:0 project and letterboxed in a 4:3 project with content for either distorted ("short & stubby"), then the DV anamorphic flag was improperly set at some point in your workflow. There are no adjustments to be made in iMovie '08 as the anamorphic flag controls the aspect ration for both preview and output while the "Current Size" setting controls the aspect ration of your thumbnails.
Basically, you have two options here. If the "Current Size" setting is 4:3 (e.g., 640x480 or 768x576 or you re-set the dimensions to your correct 4:3 standard dimensions), then the DV files can be opened and edited in iMovie HD in the correct aspect. Otherwise, the only way to correct the problem for editing in iMovie '08 is to change the anamorphic flag. Unfortunately, to do this you normally have to re-compress the file using the correct NTSC or PAL standard and aspect setting.

  • FCE helps making better quality videos than imovie?

I have been using iMovie HD and it looks like its corrupted and cannot re-install it since I lost the disk image.
I am thinking of going to FCE over upgrading to iLife 09.
Does FCE helps making better quality videos than imovie?

if your source is miniDV/Standard - yes.
if your source is 720p or iFrame - no.
in terms of speed and simplicity - iM09 is 'better'.
in terms of options and feature - FCE is by far superior.
note: iM09 is no 'upgrade' of your version, but a from ground off new app.
another note: FCE has a very steem learning curve, but after managing that is a fantastic tool!

  • Want to lock video to audio, NOT audio to video--I'm making a music video

    Hi
I'm making a music video--one long audio clip which I'm cutting video to.
I've got Pogue's book and it explains how to pushpin audio to video, but the reverse doesn't seem to work.
I've got one long audio clip and I want to lock video segments to it to preserve the synch between video clips and the audio track.
Help doing this would be greatly appreciated. Also, is there a good breakdown somewhere of how to make a music video in iMovie?
    THANKS!

I know they gutted a bunch of stuff in iMovie08, but perhaps they added the functionality I'm referring to? Do you happen to know?
Steve told us at the keynote, iM08 was done by an engineer who's a Scuba-diver ... so, audio+iM08? forget it ... the audio skills are in vers.0.1. almost zil.
plus: in iMHD≤6, you are allowed in timeline to drag clips 'to the right' to create 'holes' in the video timeline.. (=black clips) .. iM08 doesn't support that. and: in iMHD≤6 you can 'crop' a clip from the clippane easiely BEFORE adding it to the project's timeline.. frame-precision selection is 'tricky' with iM08 .. (see my site, iM08Tricks)
.. iM08 is extremely fast to 'glue' some clips together; for serious video-editing it keeps some most interesting concepts (skimming), I would like to see in any forth-coming vers. of FCE .. but: 'videos' with iM08? .. not for me ...

Hi jt - Alex was actually referring to video clips in iPhoto not appearing in the item "iPhoto Videos" in the Events Library in iMovie - thanks for your post though (the 2 words are very similar).

  • How can I stop iMovie from making thumbnails of clips from past projects when opening the program to digitize new clips for new project. i have looked in the preferences and couldn't figure out what to disable.

How can I stop iMovie from making thumbnails of clips from past projects when first opening the program to digitize new clips for a new project. It takes forever for it and is very annoying. I have looked in the preferences and couldn't figure out what would disable this problem.

You do not need to move your cursor much when pressing the mouse button to cause the tab to tear-off/tear-away into a new tab. No "sensitivity" setting that I am aware of. The tab in the new window can be dragged back to the original window.
To disable the feature, install this: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/bug489729-disable-detach-and-t/

  • How do you get music from your Itunes to your computer? im making a wedding video on windows movie maker but cant figure out how to get the bridal music off my ipod and onto my pc.

Im making a wedding video and cant figure out how to get the bridal music off my itunes and onto my computer.. Im using the windows movie maker

    Marian,
Let's be clear on one thing here. The manual setting is an iPod setting, not an iTunes one. So, once you've set it to manual (and you appear to have done that correctly), then you can connect it to any number of computers without changing that setting.
"The grey thing occurs on one pc only"
This is the thing that I don't understand, if your iPod is set to manual, then it shouldn't happen on any computer. If you connect the iPod that is set to manual to this pc, and then click on it in the source listing, then you would be looking at the songs on the iPod, and they should not be greyed out. When you connect to the "other pc" under these same circumstances, they are not greyed out?

  • How do i get video from my sony hx100 digital camera to my mac? after connecting the camera via the supplied usb cable, iMovie shows icons for 5 videos, but none will load.

i've connected the camera to the mac using the supplied usb cable. imovie shows 5 icons for videos but all of them have the red circle with slash through them and the box to import them is grayed out.

Get a nice Sony miniDV camcorder. It is not too expensive; it is small and easy to carry around to shoot your video. Most importantly, it will be instantly compatible with iMovie. You don't have to install any software, just connect it via FireWire (Sony calls this iLink) and you are good to go!
I have had several Sonys and love them. You don't need one with fancy editing capabilities because you will edit your movies in iMovie. Just be sure that it has AV In and Out so you can import and export back to the camcorder.
My current version is the small DCR HC-26. There are newer versions of that HC-30something and 40something. Look at the specs on Sony's website
Some of them require the use of a dock to import and export. I am not really fond of that feature. I like just connecting directly to the camera.

You would need an image editor to edit the images and add a border to the image first before importing them into Final Cut.
Cheapest and very good image editor?
    PIxelmator.
Located in the Mac App Store. $14.99 USD.

  • Imovie is not showing my videos from iPhoto

Hi, i have uploaded some videos from my iPhone to macbook in iPhoto. I want to edit them in iMovie but cannot find my videos in the library, but my pictures are there. The videos usually come up and i have the option to use whichever ones i want. Please can you help me. Thanking you in advance x

After calling Apple (they were no help and I was disappointed) I kept searching in the Apple support community and found the answer.
To get iMovie '11 to show the iPhoto videos under the event library on the bottom left of iMovie, you simply have to empty your iPhoto trash.  Once the trash was emptied, I restarted iMovie and the problem was fixed after iMovie did a search and showed the thumbnails of the videos.
Again, this info came from another person on the support community.  Hope this helps someone else.

  • How do I get iMovies to see my imported videos?

Using iPad2, I purchased the iMovie app, and when I take my home movies in .mov form and import them from iTunes to the iPad, iMovies does not see any videos. Surely this app will work with existing home videos and not just videos shot wight the iPad. If the was the case I never would have bought the app in the first place, I wanted to be able to edit my family vacation videos shot with a local hd cam directly on my iPad.
Anyone know if I am doing something wrong?
    Thanks.

I figured out several things in a past 24 hrs.
iOS iMovie will see videos only from iOS camera roll.
so if camera roll app cannot read the video iMovie will that fail at that to.
Videos from iPhone 4, and 3GS are not the problem.
I am trying to get videos from my other video camera.
Interesting observation: if you copy video from Mac iMovie events (.mov file) into a iOS camera roll it will not be recognized, but when you connect iPad to your computer and open Mac iMovie and you select iPad as camera source you will be able to see that video as beeing available for export.
All these .mov files are encoded differently so unless your video encoded exactly the same way as videos from iPhone 4 or 3GS it would not show in iOS camera roll.
Anybody has other ideas on encoding and file formats for iOS iMovie.
right now iOS iMovie is useless to me since it does not support my workflow, do not even want spend time learning it.
    Please prove me wrong.

  • Imovie opens only audio, no video .AVI clips Samsung camcorder

I am using the SD storage with USB transfer on the Samsung SC-D363. the window opens and the files transfer fine, but video is missing. Maybe only DV tapes can be used to tranfer video to my mac?

I can't find any reference anywhere to a Samsung SC-D363 ..perhaps there's an error in the model name or number.
Any device which creates videos on SD storage should automatically copy them into iPhoto when you start that up with the device connected via USB.
Or, if that doesn't work, connect the Samsung and look in your Mac's 'Applications' folder for the 'Image Capture' program: that should recognise the camera and import from the SD card.
With either of those methods - but especially with iPhoto - any movies which are playable in iMovie can then be imported from iPhoto.
iMovie can play MPEG-4 videos (..mini videos which have been saved in MPEG-4 format ..see your Samsung's instruction book to find out what format the camera uses for movies..) and it can play some .avi and other movie formats. In some cases, though, you might find that the video plays OK, but there's no sound. In those cases you could try playing the movie(s) using the QuickTime program.
If your Samsung is a normal DV camcorder which also saves mini-movies to the SD card, then you'll be able to use a USB cable to copy the mini-movies, as described above, but you'll need a FireWire/DV/i.Link (different names for the same thing) 4-pin-to-six-pin cable to copy normal DV video from the camcorder to your Mac.

  • Imovie 10.0.2 movie video problem

I have created a movie in imovie 10.0.2 using video that I thought had uploaded onto my imac.  After completing the video, I tried to share it so I could burn a DVD.  imovie would not allow me to do this as it thinks I am pulling the video directly from my camera.  When I unplug the camera the video clips go away but return when I plug it back in.  I have tried downloading ithe clips again but it does not work.  I have confirmed the clips have been imported my computer (in the browser).  Not sure why imovie does not recognize the clips are there and views them as being from the camera.  Apple Support has been unable to figure this out.  Any ideas on what to do?
