IMovie is repeating clips

I just returned form a trip and I am trying to make a movie from the pictures (Clips & Videos) I captured. I have imported all the clips / images in iPhoto. I have imported all the movies in iMovie. I am consolidating them in an iMovie Project. After making an intro (using the standard template to outline & storyboard), I decided to add the clips from iPhoto. The software adds the first few hundred clips easily. After that I see two issues happening ...
1) The thumbnails the system creates, do not corrospond to the actual picture (I can live with this but should not have to ... it is quite irritating)
2) After a few pictures (where the thumbnails do not not match the actual pictures), every new aditional picture I add, looks like the previous one .. in short the last few added pictures looks similar despite of them being different in iPhoto.
Not sure if anyone is facing this issue of not. I got my MacBook Pro in January this year and has all the latest software. I am not an advanced user but at the same time I am not a novice user. I am running version 9.0.4 of iMovie '11 on the machine. Am running Mac OS X Lion 10.7.4.
Can someone help please?

Tried quitting iMovie and restarting to see if it still does that?
Sometimes iMovie plays sections of video and/or audio from a memory cache, to avoid a slowdown involved in reading from the hard disc.
It's just possible that it's playing back material in its memory, as well as what's in your Timeline.
It's also possible that if you've moved around your extracted audio clip(s), you may have something (..audio and/or video..) positioned way beyond where you think your Timeline ends. Have you used the scrollbar at the bottom to scroll all the way, as far as humanly possible, to the extreme right, to see if there's nothing lurking there? ..And do that with 'Zoom' set to its lowest value, so that you really are scrolling to the very end of the movie.
I've had this kind of trouble in early versions of iMovie 4, but never had it yet in iMovie (5) HD.

  • IMovie is repeating clips after the timeline is over! HELP!!

I have a 40 minute iMovie project. At the end of the 40 minutes, imovie continues, past the end of the timeline, and is repeating video from earlier in the project(about 10 minutes earlier) without any audio, as I extracted the audio to make way for a soundtrack. I tried putting in a blank clip, as well as deleting all of my chapter markers, but it's still doing that. How do I stop it? This is important, as this project is making me $600, and I need to correct it quickly!

  • To save hard drive space, can I put my iMovie projects and clips on an external drive?

to save hard drive space, can I put my iMovie projects and clips on an external drive?

    Yes.
To preserve your projects, all moves should be done from within iMovie, (not the Finder).
First, the external drive must be formatted as Mac OS Extended (journaled). FAT32 will not work. You can reformat using Disk Utility if you need to.
When importing video from your camera, you can specify your external drive as the target on the import screen.
For existing projects, you should move using these instructions.
    http://help.apple.com/imovie/#move7d66613
There is an error in the instructions where it says to drag the project icon to the icon in the Event Library. You should instead look for your hard drive icon in the Project Library.
You can move events using these instructions.

If you want to move Events, and copy photos, copy music, etc for editing on another Mac, you should use the FILE/CONSOLIDATE MEDIA feature after moving the Project as above.

  • Convert iMovie to QT clip that PC's and Mac's can view

I am not too familiar with QT and its capabilities and have a question.
From one clip of an iMovie of my boys football game I created a 15 sec. QT movie and emailed it to my son. He could open it on his PC but when he sent to his friends who also have PC's neither could open it.
I looked on my QT Pro choices under '>file > export' to convert to some other more PC friendly file but ran into a wall. It lists a number of options but which one do I choose?
All my software is the latest version.
    Harold

Thanks to all who have responded,
I had planned to create short movie clips for emailing but wanted something quick and easy to do so.
It would be great if I could from iMovie select a clip and share to QT then email the results but it seems that each time I will have to ‘work’ on the clip to prepare it for sharing. I don’t want to go to that much trouble each time so I doubt I will use this means.
I don’t understand why it is not easy to do so. Each time I try to open a QT clip in WMP it says it can’t use the file. I had hoped it would convert the movie to MPV or better if QT would convert to something other than files most PC’s won’t open. There are now four PC users that can’t open the file and one that can. 1 out of 5 is not too impressive.
By the way, I don’t know what Sorenson is.
I create numerous iMovies but never use QT even though I keep buying Pro each system upgrade just in case.
Is there a quicker solution to sharing by email?

  • IMovie moving audio clips when transitions are added

iMovie moving audio clips when transitions are addedI have some video clips that need simple fades to black added at the end. However, whenever I add the fade out transition, iMovie does something insane. Instead of the last two seconds of video fading to black and the last two seconds of audio fading out, it seems that a random two seconds of audio from elsewhere in the clip is tacked onto the end and faded. This problem is nuts and I am having no luck finding a solution. Does anyone have one? This has happened with other transitions, but I’d settle for just getting a fade to black to work properly. Is this only a problem with Intel machines?

The problem that you describe has come up frequently on this forum. There are lots of things people have tried, but no solution has been found, other than the workaround of extracting the audio, as Klaus 1 mentions, and manually adjusting the fade out. Some feel that it is an intel machine problem, but that is not clear.
For more information on this issue, try using the search function of this forum, typing in "audio echo with transitions", or some other appropriate search words. You might find of interest the information contained in the following post:

This is a part of the larger MacBook Pro connectivity issue. There are several related threads dealing with the MBP's networking problems. If your unit is suffering from this type of difficulty, good luck ... (or a long ethernet cable)
(PS Everybody please make noise on this one so apple comes up with a solution.)

  • IMovie - "Convert Entire Clip" reduced clip's frame rate

    Hi,
I was making a video using iMovie.
I wanted to speed up or slow down some clips, so I clicked the "Convert the Entire Clip" button.
After the clips were converted, I noticed that the frame rate of my clips was reduced. It looked lagging in most part of the clips. The original format of the clips is mp4, iMovie converted them to .mov format
Is there a setting to improve/maintain the frame rate during the conversion?
    Thanks.

  • Importing clips from Imovie into FCE - Clips don't match

    Hi
OK I have been successfully importing Imovie clips into FCE, but have recently hit a problem. I make a rough edit in IMovie but when I open the imported file in FCE I get different footage to that which sits in the IMovie project.
Yes I am opening the right clips

    nothing?
ok I have worked around it a little by importing all the footage and that way I get most of it but still not all of it makes it through

  • Imported iMovie HD project clips have incorrect capture date - add-on info

People converting their .dv files from the iMovie HD style into iMovie 09 style report some frustration at having to rename their clips to view them properly. For discussion, see:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1344628
Fortunately, within the thread, a kind soul has posted a solution - many thanks. This posting is an add-on to that thread, posted here because that thread is archived.
Unfortunately, I could not understand the instructions fully, so I spent some time working out how to make it go, since the solution requires something beyond the usual drag-and-drop to work.
*To Convert the Dates and Names of DV Files from iMovie HD to the Event-Date Format of iMovie 09*
    1. Download and Unzip the DVRecordingDate file. It produces a folder with four items: COPYING.txt, DVRecordingDate.class, README.txt and DVRecordingDate.java. None of these should be double clicked.
    2. Identify the folder that has your iMovie 6 .dv files. These files will be entirely renamed, so if they are used in any other projects, only work on a copy of them.
    3. Launch the program Terminal - it's in the Utilities folder of the Applications folder
    4. When you see a prompt ending in a $, type +cd /Users/yourname/Downloads/DVrecordingDate-1-1.0+,
where /Users/yourname/Downloads/DVrecordingDate-1-1.0 is the folder containing the downloaded DVRecordingDate file. This will change the prompt that appears on every line, but it will still end with a $.
(HINT: you can get the path name of this folder by selecting it in the Finder, and choosing copy. All you then need do is type cd in Terminal, and paste the rest in.)
Now is when we rename the files - as stated elsewhere, the Finder creation date is NOT changed - it is only the file name that changes. However, this is enough for iMovie 09 to understand when the file was recorded, and where it should be stored within the events system.
    5. At the $ prompt, type +java DVRecordingDate -rename /Users/yourname/Movies/iMovie\ Events.localized/myholiday/Clip\ *.dv+, where +/Users/yourname/Movies/iMovie\ myholiday/+ is the name of the the folder that has your iMovie 6 .dv files. Again, this can be copied from the Finder, and pasted in after typing java DVRecordingDate -rename. The *.dv part os to ensure the program coverts all your files in the folder.
    A list appears:
    Renaming file(s) from, to:
    /Users/yourname/Movies/myholiday/Clip 01.dv clip-2003-08-31 20;37;41.dv
    /Users/yourname/Movies/myholiday/Clip 02.dv clip-2003-09-04 18;43;26.dv
    /Users/yourname/Movies/imyholiday/Clip 03.dv clip-2003-09-04 19;00;50.dv
    etc
and in the Finder all the files are renamed.
And that's it. You can now import the .dv files into iMovie 09 and it will give the files their proper dates within the system.
Hope this saves someone some time...

No, I mean that when I import old iMovie projects into iMovie 08 the 'capture date' of footage is not correctly imported (the .dv file creation date is read in instead). Sorry to confuse the issue with the comment about the camera: I just meant to say that all the equipment I used in my setup is fairly standard yet there is a glaring bug in this fundamental functionality.
Regarding re-import: it took me ages to originally import my dv tapes to the computer & not really practical to go through that again.
FWIW, I've not yet imported anything from dv directly into 08

  • Latest version iMovie: cannot see clips in project OR event browser, but they are there in both libraries! So cannot create/edit/publish ANYTHING.

HI All. I have been having a HECK of a time with iMovie 11!!!  Converted a bunch of video to .mov format, imported into iMovie, and created a project. No problem. Finalized, and published to iTunes, no problem. Saves extra copies. No Problem. SO ... I want to create another project, and follow the instructions RELIGIOUSLY. I can import the video files into the event library, and can drag them into a newly created project, but I CANNOT see the clips in the browser pane for events or library! When I click the playhead in either the event library or the project library (where the clips are edited - supposedly), they play (ie, i hear the audio just fine) ... but NO real-time playback.  ALSO - the video no longer plays for the already completed project when I click the playhead - same deal - not in the project browser, not in the event browser. The playhead runs, but as it moves from thumbnail to thumbnail, each one goes black, and no video plays in real time in the other pane. I closed out of iMovie, did a restart, repaired permissions. No change. I get no error messages, and can find no way to 'reassociate' a project with a set of clips (like one can do in software like Illustrator etc).HELP!!!

I've spent 3 hours in Apple Covent Garden trying to have this fixed. Most of those were spent doing something to content in iPhoto. It didn't work. Then I left them my computer to reinstall software (Snow Leopard and iMovie) which they said they could do better than me and my discs. But I got back a computer with a new user profile and no files. When I used Time Machine to restore my files to my old profile the problem was just as before except now I've lost a week worth of photos, despite the Time Machine file having been saved just hours before I gave my Mac to the muppets in the Apple store.
If it's any clue, the other I get is that iMovie searches for four missing movie files when it tries to load. I've tried solving this by creating new files and changing the names to match the ones that are missing (as I read elsewhere in the community works) but it doesn't work.
So I've wasted hours, a day of Apple having my computer and no one replies to my thread here. What's to be done? Do I give up on iMovie and buy Final Cut pro? And how can I get my week's worth of photos back that have disappeared from TimeMachine, even though everything else in the restoration (e.g. mail and Firefox windows) are completely up to date?

  • Adobe Media encoder repeats clips when I import to transcode

The last two days, every time I drag a number of clips into media encoder it seems to repeat one particular clip in the job lot, instead of reading the different clips I have selected.
I have restarted and cleared the cashe. I am still having problems. When I drag a group of clips into Encoder and when I drag a clip one by one, it reads the incorrect clip for encoding, and the name refers to one clip on the list instead of lots of individual ones.
I am importing MXF files to ProRes, using OS x 10.8.5 with Media Encoder - 8.1.0.122
I have had no problems doing this in the past, as in last week, and am currently doing it with the same footage on another machine.
Has anyone had this problem at all?
    Many thanks,
    Danielle

I inserted different clips, and they appear as one clip repeated as below.

  • How import from camcorder to iMovie as one clip?

When I import from my mini-dv camcorder (Canon) into iMovie '09, iMovie splits into many clips. The problem is, it gets confused and about 10% of the clips are like 0.1 sec and named something not related to date/time like the rest of the clips. As a result, they appear in the event library out of order, creating a mess. I just want to import as one clip to avoid this misordering. My objective is archive video from tape to hard drive. As background, I suspect the timecodes may be wacky on the mini-dv tape because it is a copy from an 8mm tape.
I have many of these mini-dv tapes so an answer to this problem will save me many hours. I can achieve a 1-clip import using Vidi, but it won't automatically stop recording so I can't start one importing when I go to bed.
    Thanks

I have the same problem. The video was created with a sony hcr-dc96 using the "smth int rec" mode. The would be a "time lapse video" in English. I suspect every frame looks like a new scene to the importer.
It imports and creates an even, but if I click on the event I get the beach ball and unresponsiveness, and eventual crash. Looking at the even library I can see there are 3249 files in the folder corresponding to that event.
Is there any way to recover using imovie? Do I need to import using some other means?

  • Why Does iMovie Duplicate Video Clips?

Clips take up about 13gb per hour. Although iMovie now has a "library," it still duplicates or moves files that are already on hard drives. Why can't iMovie just make its own thumbnails and make an alias to the original file? FCP essentially does this.

    Welcome to iMovie Discussions.
This is because ..mix'n'match any set of possibilities:
    1. Your Mac's processor is too slow to import in 'real time' (..Importing involves receiving the HD material and then converting it "on-the-fly" to editable Apple Intermediate Codec format ..and possibly having to save it to disc and read it back off disc, and then save it again during that process..)
    2. You don't have enough free disc space (..try starting with about 40GB for importing, say, an hour's worth of hi-def video..)
    3. Your disc space is extremely fragmented (..try leaving your Mac on overnight, and not letting it 'sleep', so that it defrags your disc automatically in the wee small hours..)
    4. You're not importing onto an external FireWire-connected hard disc (..though this can be a problem with Canon camcorders, which like to have the FireWire bus all to themselves..)
    5. You don't have enough RAM (internal memory) to store and process all that incoming data in 'real time'.
As it's unlikely that you can speed up your processor (..I bought a new quad-core G5 because my laptop wasn't fast enough ..but that's a couple of years ago, and now I'm on an Intel Mac..) you could try (5) adding more RAM, (3) 'de-fragging' your disc overnight, and (4) importing onto an external FireWire-connected fast hard disc.
..Or any mixture of the above..

  • How can I get Imovie to recognize clips from my Camcorder

I have a panasonic HDC-TM700 camcorder I recorded in AVCHD mode and Imovie won't recognize the clips.
Does anyone have any tips for converting the clips into a readible format?

It was Imovie11. VoltaicHD is working so far. Thanks Mate!
It seems funny that camcorder companies & Apple don't rectify these problems faster. The whole point in recording footage is to make movies, right?

  • IMovie 11 gray clips - won't import to new project after crash

    Hi all,
I was importing a load of video, recorded on a Zoom Q3HD (in .MOV format) to iMovie 11. At some point, iMovie crashed and forced me to restart the app. Since then, the clips I'm trying to import are showing up as gray in the clip window. Sometime, scanning over the clips will show thumbnails from a different clip however right now, it is showing me thumbnails of the movies I'm scanning over. I have trashed iMovie thumbnails and cache, done a permissions repair, restarted, checked for updates, even resaved the problem clips in QuickTime, thinking that the format of the clips could be an issue but it made no difference. Not sure what else I can do?? I am unable to drag these gray clips into a new project. Here is a screencast of my issue. Please let me know if you have any suggestions. Thx. Matthew
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=njlQMpas9aA

What you are seeing may not be a symptom of the clips going bad but instead a symptom of something failing in the Project itself. Especially after a crash with iMovie open, everything is to be suspect. Be very paranoid about all the elements in that project, any one of them could be the source of the problem you are witnessing.
Check out this Discussion Thread from September
I movie quits unexpectedly during editing and publishing
Click on the button near the top of the window where it says Project Library (it toggles between Library and edit Project).
Click just once on the name of the project, so that it highlights in blue.
Go to File Menu > Duplicate Project. There will now be a second project with the same name, but with a number added to the end of the name
Open that duplicated project by double-clicking it
from Jasonryan1. It relates to a corrupted item existing in his project. And in his attempt to troubleshoot it, he suspected it was a Title he placed in the Project itself. Once he deleted the corrupted Title he was able to successfully export it. As to which item is causing instability, that's a tricky process to narrow down. And I would agree it seems unlikely all your projects could have some corrupted element in them. But it might work to concentrate on the simplest project which is showing the symptoms you describe. Duplicate that project and start deleting pieces of it and trying to add a Title to it and see if iMovie crashes. And that's not to say it's a title, it could just as easily be a picture, a transtion or a music clip that's preventing that project from previewing and importing clips properly.
Also consider the iMovie Preferences file.
    Delete the iMovie Preferences file:
    Go to the Desktop
Click on Go Menu then Choose Library
    Go to Preferences > com.apple.iMovieApp.plist
Drag that file to the trash, restart iMovie and see how it reacts
